The lovable indie game shows up on one of gaming’s biggest platforms, with a few upgrades to boot.
Cave Story is a simple but innovated platformer created by independent game developer Daisuke Amaya. The game was initially released for free, but its massive success gave it the opportunity to pop up in a few different mediums. Versions popped up all over the gaming world, but the two most high profile ports are likely the 3DS version and the one that has just dropped to Steam.
This latest iteration of Cave Story, now downloadable on Steam for around $10 depending on your region, has a completely remastered soundtrack and a slightly overhauled graphics engine. Nothing so serious that you won’t recognize the game, but just enough to make it worth shelling out a few bucks in lieu of downloading the free version.
Cave Story has seen high praise for its sheer size, causing many reviewers to compare it to classic platformers such as Castlevania and Metroid. The game features fast-paced shooting in tight spaces, with tons and tons of enemies attacking from all sides. The whole thing looks pretty chaotic, and reminds me of some of the more intense side-scrolling shooters of the old days.
Here’s a link to the game’s entry on Steam, if you’re interested in giving it a try: Cave Story
Do you like seeing indie developers spread their products out and make some money, or should free games stay free?

Dino Patti, head of Playdead Games, says that the current method for marketing and selling games is broken, and has been for quite some time.
Limbo was one of the bigger hits for Xbox’s Live Arcade, PC and PSN in 2010. If you played it at all, you probably still remember some of its haunting imagery – it was just that effective at creating a mood. Now the guy in charge of Limbo’s development company, Playdead Games, is offering his opinion on why direct downloads work, and why the current retail model doesn’t.
Patti’s main thrust appears to be that delivering games via disc just doesn’t make much sense in a world where most gamers can simply download whatever they want from the web. It’s a familiar argument, though Patti does have a bit more experience with digital downloads than most.
Here’s what he had to say:
“"Driving discs in a big van all over the world is really inefficient. I don't understand how anyone can make money out of this. Driving a truck to Japan just to get it delivered to people when they can get it from the net? Hopefully the new consoles will embrace the download space even more."”
Of course, it’s worth noting that Limbo is a tiny, tiny game compared to AAA titles like Skyrim or Battlefield 3. Downloading a 117 MB game is a lot different than downloading a 6 GB game, especially when you consider that here in the states, out of 307 million people, only around 67 million have access to broadband services.
Sony Computer Entertainment’s Kaz Hirai summed up this counterpoint nicely:
“"We do business in parts of the world where network infrastructure isn't as robust as one would hope. There's always going to be requirement for a business of our size and scope to have a physical medium. To think everything will be downloaded in two years, three years or even ten years from now is taking it a little bit to the extreme."
I think we’re headed towards an all-digital world, but it can’t happen until global broadband coverage improves and the cost of console hard drives goes way, way down. Hell, I still have a 20gig drive on my Xbox – just try getting me to download a game.
Which opinion do you think is more accurate for the near-future of gaming?

Art books, soundtracks and armor sets mark the big gets in the fighter’s newest collector’s edition.
Collector’s editions have been light in the past, with many developers dropping a special DLC code or some other trifle in the box and calling it a day. Not so for Namco, who have just revealed the details of the Soul Calibur V Collector’s Edition package. Fans of the series will find plenty to enjoy in the CE, which hits shelves January 31st.
The collector’s edition comes complete with a soundtrack for the game, an artbook of the characters and environments, and an exclusive behind-the-scenes featurette. Collector’s edition owners will also have the advantage of downloading special armor sets, titled “Dark Knight” and “White Knight” respectively.
What’s really cool about this particular collector’s edition is the design – the box is engineered to resemble an old book, and it opens in the same way a book would to reveal its contents. This, in addition to the recent revelation that Assassin’s Creed’s Ezio would indeed be a playable character in V, make the game even more interesting from the perspective of a wary Soul Calibur player.
I mean, I love the games, but it does feel quite a bit like the same thing over and over again. It would take some serious innovation or a particularly cool collector’s edition to sell me another Soul Calibur, and Namco certainly seems to be on the right track. I’m excited to see how Ezio fares, although his addition may be lights out for some of the cheaper characters in the game.
Are you ready for another Soul Calibur? It doesn’t seem like IV came out all that long ago.

Two of Sega’s top-selling iOS games are about to be made available to players free of charge, but only for 24 hours.
AppAllStar, a website dedicated to providing free daily apps for iOS users, just announced something they’re crowning  “Championship Week.” The event’s primary goal is providing players with the chance to download awesome apps without having to pay the normal cost associated with the game. The event is in celebration of the AppAllStar App receiving over a million downloads, so they’re looking to pass a little thanks on to their customers.
Championship Week begins on October 23rd, and it looks like they’re getting started with a bang. Both Streets of Rage and Super Monkey Ball 2, two of the most highly downloaded games in the iTunes app store, will be available for free downloads during Championship Week, with Monkey ball hitting on the 23rd and Streets of Rage 2 landing on the 28th. Like I said, you’ll only have 24 hours to download them, so mark your calendars.
There isn’t much info on what other titles will be offered during the week, but the AppAllStar press release indicates that they’ll be either Sega titles or games developed by SkyVu. Other developers may be in the mix as well – there’s no clear list of who is and isn’t participating.
All I know is that for seven days, you can look forward to getting one awesome free game per day. So why not take part? The only thing you have to lose is the time you spend downloading, and you probably weren’t going to accomplish much in that 30 seconds anyway.
As for me, I’m definitely getting in on Super Monkey Ball. I absolutely love that game series and for some reason didn’t even realize it was available for iOS devices.
Are you excited to get some free apps?

Rockstar announces the 10th anniversary edition of its old-school classic, remastered and headed directly to your mobile phone.
It’s hard to imagine, but Grand Theft Auto III, the game generally recognized as revolutionizing what game developers could do with an open world, has been out for 10 years. For a bit of perspective, the number one song in 2001 was Independent Women Part 1, by Destiny’s Child. Beyoncé was still a person in a band when GTAIII hit shelves.
Anyway, this post isn’t about Beyoncé. It’s about Rockstar’s most recent announcement – in celebration of the tenth anniversary of GTAIII, they’re releasing the game not to consoles or direct download, but directly to mobile platforms.
Here’s the currently supported device lineup:
Apple iOS Devices: iPad 2, iPhone 4S
Android Phones: Droid X2, HTC Evo 2, LG Optimus 2X, Motorola Atrix, Samsung Galaxy S2
Android Tablets: Acer Iconia, Asus Eee Pad, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
Rockstar notes that this list isn’t complete, and they’ll be releasing a more in-depth list of compatible devices once they’re a little closer to dropping the game on the open market. If you happen to be going to New York Comic Con, you can give the game a test run at the Rockstar booth.
Everyone else will just need to wait until later this fall; there’s no official release but it’s safe to say we’ll see  GTAIII on our iPads sometime during the holiday season.
I’m just amazed at how far we’ve come technology-wise. I remember being amazed at the freedom that game created, and it’s incredible to think that I could have the same experience on a device that fits in my pocket.
Anyone planning on downloading GTAIII to their mobile device, or are you sticking to consoles?

It took them the PSP Go to finally make a hardline stance on the matter, but now Sony has seen the light and is insisting that now is not the time for a download-only console.
Said Shuhei Yoshida, Sony Worldwide Studios boss, "We believe, for some consumers, the time is [right], but for other consumers, the time is still not [right]. So we believe the time is still not right to go download-only as a platform."
What could be the deciding factor as to why they are siding with those consumers who not ready for a download-only approach in gaming? It's simple: broadband internet. "Some PS Vita titles, like Uncharted: Golden Abyss, will be close to 4GB in size, which could be too large to download for consumers who do not have a fast broadband connection." But apart from this, "Some consumers like shopping in retail stores, talking to knowledgeable store clerks, buying and playing games on the spot. We do not want to remove that capability from consumers."
SCEE's Jim Ryan concurs, saying that, "There are consumers in parts of the world - this is a global device - where the digital model has not yet fully been embraced." And it's true, really. In fact, in a study recently concluded, not even the US or UK are in the forerunners of downloading speed. And mind you, everyone gets just a tad bit -- okay, that's not true, a whole LOT -- more impatient when it comes to downloading their stuff on the Internet. What more if it's a game that you've been waiting for eons to come?
Nobody would want to sit around several hours just waiting for the download to finish, on top of the full year (at a minimum) that you've already spent just waiting in anticipation for the game to hit retail.
I would have to agree with Sony on this one. The global infrastructure for a hi-speed connection just isn't all that well set yet. Of course, as a business, they'll have to take into top consideration as well what their other consumers' capacity for enjoying their products are going to be.
The failure of the PSP Go most definitely made this impact on them. Releasing the system without the UMD was a misstep on their part, which they immediately realized when it went dead cold on store shelves just months after its launch. And then they atoned for it by coming up with the PlayStation Vita.
Not to say that a download-only console will be nay possible in the future, but as for now, am fine with my physical media as it is. There's someting fairly comforting having it in the palm of my hands.

Ó

We know that the 3G-enabled handheld has a 20MB cap in Japan, but what can American consumers expect from Sony’s PlayStation Vita?
Much hype has been made over the fact that Sony’s new handheld, the PlayStation Vita, is a fully 3G-compatible device that allows gamers to connect to any nearby AT&T signal (assuming you’re paying for the contract). The “always-on” connectivity of the device is considered one of the major selling points of the more expensive 3G version, which runs $299.99 compared to the Wi-Fi-only version’s price of $249.99.
While gamers may see 3G connectivity as a method for downloading games on the go or competing with friends online (though the thought of 3G latency makes me shudder), Sony recently revealed that the Vita, at least in Japan, has an insane download cap of 20MB per month. This means that the 3G functionality of the device is essentially useless for online gaming and game downloads, unless you’re playing for an incredibly short period of time or downloading a game that was originally released on Super Nintendo.
To put this cap in perspective, most PSP games run 200-500 megabytes, with original PlayStation games falling in around the same general area. Nintendo DS games fall between 16 and 128MB, and they’re noticeably less pretty than current PSP titles. Even if you’re using the Vita to download songs, you’re only going to be able to download seven or eight before you smash into the data cap.
Of course, this data cap only applies to Japanese players – there’s no official statement from Sony regarding what American gamers can expect from the console. The only thing Sony has said officially is that there is nothing official to say, which means a data cap may or may not be included with the Vita here in the States (and in other nations).
This, combined with concerns over the Vita 3G’s low 128Kbps down/64Kbps up connection speed put its position as the first single-purpose 3G gaming device at serious risk.
Are you planning on picking up a Vita 3G? Are you concerned over a possible data cap?

Magic Dream Games brings their quirky tower defense game to the iPad and iPhone, and in honor of the games they have planned for next month, it’s completely free of charge.
The iPhone and iPad seem uniquely suited for tower defense games. Maybe it’s the touch interface, or maybe it’s the way you can jump into a tower defense game for small chunks of time, but it’s safe to say the genre is doing well on the platform. “Monster Trouble” has been out since February of 2011 and has seen glowing reviews and a fair sales volume, and now you can try it for yourself without risking any of your hard-earned coin.
The events of Monster Trouble revolve around you and your townsfolk working to protect your humble hamlet from the encroaching forces of evil and destruction. The invading army is comprised of goblins, ogres, and other monsters you’d recognize from games with a fantasy setting. “Monster Trouble” is a bit different from other tower defense games in that you first build defensible buildings, and then work on placing towers.
There are ten unique types of tower, but players only have access to three during any particular game. As with other tower defense games, the placement of your towers is often as important as the type of tower you use, since lines of towers can work as traffic blocks against angry invaders.
When you start the game you’ll have access to nine separate maps, but over time you’ll unlock new maps featuring new challenges. If you’re looking for a new game for your iOS device but you’re on a tight budget, it’s worth downloading “Monster Trouble” and giving it a test drive. The worst-case scenario is you burn some time you would have spent checking Facebook or ignoring work you should actually be doing.
Be sure to let us know what you think of the game in the comments!

For a country who considers online gaming as a national sport, with people willing to jump off buildings for their online characters, this news doesn't really come as a surprise.
According to Pando Networks, research, South Korea ranks the number one country in terms of speed in downloading games. Based on their data gathered from January to June 2011, from 27 million downloads by 20 million computers in 224 countries, South Korea's average speed is at 2,202KBps.
The following countries take runner-up spots to South Korea:
Romania (1,909KBps)
Bulgaria (1,611KBps)
Lithuania (1,462KBps)
Latvia (1,377KBps)
Ukraine (1,190KBps)
So where does North America stand? Surprisingly, a bit farther down the line, with the US clocking in a speed rate of 616KBps, and Canada registering 579KBps.
Said Robert Levitan, Pando Networks' CEO,of their findings, "The disparities we found were striking. While, in general, developed economies outpaced the developing world in average download speeds, big names such as the US, UK, France, china and Canada were not even close to being the fastest."
That is a surprising turnout, considering that the assumption is that first world countries will have the superior technological infrastructure. Then again, they're not mutually exclusive, so it appears.
While south Korea's basking in the top spot for this particular study, their Northern counterpart was recently involved in serious allegations that North Korea is stealing money from MMOs through hired hackers.

The CryDev website reflects that CryEngine 3 has been downloaded so 104,623 times so far. With this much people downloading the free SDK, we should be seeing much more independent games being developed. After all, that's the whole point of this exercise.
Said Crytek, "We want you to make games with CryEngine 3 that people will want to play. We hope that your work will lead to a product you can commercialize. If this is the case, before you can sell your work or your game, you must seek a development license for CryEngine 3."

Cloud-based gaming service, Gaikai, is now officially live. This was the announcement made by David Perry himself over at his personal blog.
Included in the trial run of the service are Mass Effect 2, The Sims 3 and Spore. Don' think that that's all they have to offer, though. They've got a vast array of choices for those with beta access, and as well as those with dependable Internet connections.
"It's been a TON of work and so to speed up the process ofonboarding games in September 2010 we kicked off a new server design, 'The Raku Server'," said Perry.
"We demonstrated this amazing new custom hardware at CES and let people play (streamed) Battlefield Bad Company II in stereoscopic 3D. We also showed set top boxes running Gaikai, we even had Google TV demo, etc.
At the Game Developers Conference in our meetings we will show some really high-end performance games running at 60hz iwth no work needing to be done by the publishers/ developers. We are really ecited to have finally solved this incredible technical challenge."
He goes on to explain that at the moment, however, their main focus is on their Advertising strategy, "where we can put any game anywhere on the web."
To complete the explanation of what Gaikai essentially does, for those people who are still left confused about the very nature of its concept, he said:
"We let people try our games, and I'd love to get to the point where we make it so easy that you can try "every" game without lots of friction and pain, downloading, installing, patching, etc.
So our thinking is somewhat like YouTube, as instead of just building a portal to go and watch videos, they decided to focus on putting videos everywhere on the web. We are doing the same with games, so when you read a review on a game, you can try playing it right there on the same page as the review.
Nobody else in the world has achieved this kind of streaming performance directly into browsers, it's technically the most advanced interactive advertising unit in existence, and I'm incredibly proud of my team's accomplishment."
