Back in October of 2010, Doom was removed from the Xbox Live Arcade lineup due to expiring rights. When Zenimax expired Id Software, it sort of threw all of the latter company’s franchises into the air. Of course, Zenimax did note that the games would return soon – which apparently means “In about a year.”
If you’ve been patiently waiting for Doom to show up on XBLA again, today is your day. You can download it right this very minute, for the low, low price of $5. It’s sort of amazing when you think of it – with all this innovation and all these million-dollar games, we’re still spending money on the game that basically invented the FPS genre.
If you’d like to download the game, here’s a link: Doom
Besides, Reddit is down. How else are you going to spend your day?

5th Cell is prepping a brand new platformer, set for release this Thursday.
5th Cell recently brought its Nintendo DS hit, Scribblenauts, to Apple’s iOS software. The game was a smashing success, and even managed to topple Angry Birds from the top software slot for a couple of weeks. With performance like that, it’s no wonder that the development company is targeting their newest game, Run Roo Run, directly at the iOS market.
As you can see, Run Roo Run operates in much the same way as Robot Unicorn attack - your character automatically runs across the screen, and you have to collect goodies and avoid hazards as you go. The one major difference is that in lieu of scrolling across an infinite screen, your auto-running will be limited to one screen length. 5th Cell dubs this setup “microplatforming.”
You can expect to find a whopping 420 levels on launch day, with increasingly complex and difficult problems. Plus, you’ll unlock “extreme” versions of every level as you go, giving you a total of 840 levels to play. 5th Cell has promised 10 new levels every week, free of charge.
Not too shabby for mobile gamers, eh? Watch for Run Roo Run on the iTunes Store tomorrow, January 12.

Despite getting off to a roaring start, the PS Vita has completely tanked at is rolls beyond the first seven days.
In Japan, PS Vita certainly made its presence known during its launch week. The device moved over 320,000 units – putting it on par with first-week 3DS sales and far outstripping the initial haul of the original PSP. But the momentum doesn’t seem to have carried beyond early adopters, as the device managed to sell only 72,000 units in its second week.
Now, 72,000 devices sold certainly isn’t a terrible number, but it’s worth noting that the Vita was outsold by the 3DS, Wii, PS3 and original PSP – not a great sign for a device that’s supposedly the next handheld revolution. Gamers just aren’t flocking to the system as Sony might have hoped.
The software numbers aren’t any better, with not a single Vita game breaking the top 20. Of course, it’s hard to get a bead on exactly how well Vita games are selling, since many are available for download through PSN and Sony has yet to release their sales figures.
Vita is still young and we’ll have to see how the whole thing plays out, but dropping from 320,000 sold to 72,000 sold in just one week (in the middle of the holiday rush) certainly isn’t a good omen.
What do you think? Do these numbers indicate a problem for Vita, or is it just the natural progression of a new device finding its feet?

The digital distribution platform is heading to GameFly’s client, although some of its games may be left behind.
Earlier this year, GameFly made a very smart decision by acquiring Direct2Drive and announcing their intention to launch into the digital distribution market. With retail sales falling and on-disc games becoming less viable (though still strong), it was a good move by a company that depends on hard copies of software to make its money.
Now, a few months after the announcement, we’re getting details on how exactly Direct2Drive will be implemented into the current GameFly system. Here’s what we know so far:
Direct2Drive will merge with the current GameFly client
Direct2Drive customers will have GameFly accounts created for them
Direct2Drive customers with existing GameFly accounts will have the two accounts merged
Customers are advised to download all previous purchases now, as there’s no guarantee the games will be available through GameFly
If you’re a current Direct2Drive user and you want more details on how the transition will go down, you should check out the official FAQ. It’s worth noting that current GameFly customers won’t see much of a change, and merged Direct2Drive customers won’t be give a subscription to the regular GameFly service unless they decide to pay for one.
What do you think of GameFly’s plan to merge the two services?

DICE confirms that there will be no standalone updater for the popular first-person shooter.
If you wanted some sort of standalone updater or a method for mirroring patches for Battlefield 3, you’re fresh out of luck – EA has confirmed that the only way players will be able to patch their game will be through Origin’s online service.
This naturally doesn’t affect PS3 and Xbox 360 gamers, whose patches are delivered directly to their consoles, but it does severely limit the way PC players can update their game. Slow updaters are nothing new to the industry, but most game companies provide some sort of alternate method for players to ensure everyone has a chance to get the patch in whatever way works best for them.
This is tough news for the fair amount of people reporting issues with Origin’s updater software – if you live in Australia, for example, you’re stuck with the terrible download speeds you’ve been getting. Maybe not a big deal for a small mechanics update, but for patches like the 3.5GB monstrosity pushed live this week you could be sitting out of the game for a couple of days.
EA has no plans to develop a separate mechanism for delivering patches, so if you want to keep Battlefield 3 up to date you’re just going to have to use Origin for the foreseeable future.
Did you have any issues with the recent patch?

Sony looks to solve a few minor problems with a quick, simple update for your PS3 software.
If you love minor, behind-the-scenes updates to your gaming hardware, then today is certainly your day. Sony has just pushed firmware update 3.73 to the PSN servers, and while the download isn’t mandatory it’s probably something you should take part in just to ensure you’re as up to date as possible.
Of course, Sony is being purposefully vague in regards to what exactly the patch does, saying only "Stability during use of certain PS3 format software has been improved." This message should be familiar to PS3 owners, as it’s the same basic message they get any time firmware updates com along.
It is curious to see a firmware update released so quickly after the last one – it’s only been about a month since 3.72 – and I can only wonder if it has anything to do with the last batch of PSN account hacks. While Sony was adamant that their network wasn’t breached and the hackers were trying old data, it always makes me feel a bit odd to see a firmware push immediately after a confirmed attack. Of course, if a firmware update is critical for fixing PS3 problems, it’s usually not optional.
Either way, staying up to date on your firmware keeps your PS3 and its data a bit safer (except for when it bricks the console, but hey – that’s rare). Most of the time Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo will force you to update firmware, but in this case it looks like it’s largely up to you.
Do you ever get the feeling that a quick firmware rollout is in place to solve a problem you haven’t yet found out about?

After a brief, vague delay, Sony’s new FPS title gets a brand-new release date and may be headed to PSN sooner than you think.
If you’re one of the PS3 owners eagerly awaiting the release of Payday: The Heist, Sony has some good news for you this morning. Though the game suffered a strange delay earlier in the month, it looks like it was only minor – look for The Heist to be available on PSN as of October 18Th.
If you’ve already pre-ordered the game, you don’t need to do anything; the game will automatically download to your console on the 18th. If you haven’t, you can pick it up from the PSN store for $19.99. The PC version is still hanging in the wind, though it’s obvious we won’t be seeing it any time soon.
Payday: The Heist is designed to be played with another player; it’s a first-person-cooperative shooter. At launch, you can expect at least six different missions with more to come in the form of DLC later on down the line. I’ll let the game’s website describe what you’ll see in the game:
“As an intense, gritty and unapologetic episodic co-operative shooter, PAYDAY is packed with cocky attitude, epic Hollywood-inspired action and endless replayability. With six action-packed heists to complete at launch, players embark on a spectacular crime tour of heists, including shooting their way through a downtown bank vault robbery, trading hostages in an armored car hijacking and even a moonlit infiltration of a high-security headquarters.”
Sounds cool to me. Is anyone out there planning on playing this game, or is your October schedule already full?

The anger moves from the skies to the waters. Angry Birds spin-off game, Angry Fish, has gone live on Xbox Live Indie Games.
Developed and published by Frozen Software, Angry Fish is, shall we say, almost an exact copy of Rovio's hit title. Except, obviously, for the bit where instead of birds, there are fish.
Notwithstanding the obvious copy, it actually looks to be a pretty fun game in and of itself. I don't quite understand what the cat is doing underwater, but oh well. Whatever suits them.
Angry Fish is now out on the XBL Indie Games, and is available for 80MS Points. I kinda doubt it will achieve the success that Angry Birds has (definitely no movie rights are anywhere in sight for Angry Fish), but since Microsoft still hasn't got them birds on board, unlike the PSN, this will have to do for now.

It takes a lot of guts, among other things, to acknowledge that your company royally screwed up its consumers, but it takes much, much more to accept full responsibility for it, and utter the words "I'm sorry."
Kazuo Hirai, Sony's executive deputy president, has finally taken the stage for the much-awaited press conference dealing with the after-effects of the damaging hack on the PlayStation Network service. As soon as they did, they wasted no time saying sorry, bowing in front of the press as they did.
"This criminal act against our network had a significant impact not only on our consumers, but our entire industry," he said. "These illegal attacks obviously highlight the widespread problem with cyber-security. We take the security of our consumers' information very seriously and are committed to helping our consumers protect their personal data. In addition, the organization has worked around the clock to bring these services back online, and are doing so only after we had verified increased levels of security across our networks."
On April 19th, the PSN was hacked by a yet unidentified person/ group, putting at risk personal details of the 77 million strong subscribers. It wasn't only until a week-long internal investigation in the matter that the company divulged to the public the fact that their accounts may have very well been compromised.
Because of this major security breach, which he characterized as "highly sophisticated", Sony has now decided to move their servers from San Diego, California to another data center, which should have better security. They are also said to be working on adding in more security systems, bringing in automated software management and enhanced levels of data encryption to further keep vital information confidential and tightly secured.
Just before the press conference started, members of the press were handed out notes listing down the compensation package that Sony has in store for its customers. This includes free downloadable content as well as month-long free access to services like the PlayStation Plus and Qriocity.
Hirai also responded to queries regarding the US Congress inquiry, to which he guaranteed that he will be answering the questions. He also promised that the PSN service should be back up sometime next week, although not giving any specific date or time.
Sony also stressed the importance of keeping vigilant in regards to the the credit card accounts linked to the PSN. Out of the 77 million subscribers, they confirmed that 10 million cards are linked to the service. Although he claims that they have not encountered any reports about actual damages due to fraudulent use of PSN-linked credit card accounts, they still advice that account holders keep a watchful eye on it.
Once the PSN is back up, Hirai also adviced for users to change their passwords immediately.
Kazuo Hirai was joined by other Sony execs, namely senior vice president and chief information officer Shinji Hasejima, and senior vice president of corporate communications Shiro Kambe. Hirai bowed and apologized once more to the audience upon closing his press statement.
