HwapX and Overx fall into this category with the recent release of their Venix GUI downgrader app.

Why make new games when people will just keep buying the old ones?
Fans have been on a rampage trying to get Square Enix to remake Final Fantasy VII, but the company doesn’t seem to care. Instead, it has elected to bring the PlayStation 2’s Final Fantasy X to modern consoles, with an HD version due sometime this year. Unfortunately for fans of the franchise, details were scarce at the time of the project’s announcement.
New info has emerged that helps clarify what exactly Final Fantasy X HD is all about. And if you’re hoping for a complete, next-gen remake, you’re going to be sorely disappointed. Shinji Hashimoto, producer for Square Enix, has confirmed that the upcoming re-release is a re-mastering of the original a la ICO or Metal Gear Solid HD.
So it looks like the Final Fantasy X you remember will be present in full in this upcoming release, with a few minor upgrades to make it worth plopping down your cash. Not the best news in the world, but not terrible either.
Is it worth buying the same games over and over again for minor graphical upgrades?

Thanks to a hardware shift and restrictive DRM, several Ubisoft titles will be offline next week.
Ubisoft’s solution to the DRM debate was what is known as “always-on” DRM. Basically, in order to play Ubisoft’s games, you must have a persistent internet connection. While you play, your system periodically checks in with Ubisoft’s servers to ensure that your game isn’t (gasp!) pirated.
It’s a good idea in theory, but a terrible one in practice. People without strong internet connections experience constant disconnects even from single player content, and issues with Ubisoft’s servers have rendered several games unplayable on multiple occasions. It’s safe to say that the gaming public isn’t generally fond of always-on DRM.
And here’s yet another reason to be against restrictive DRM: Ubisoft has announced that it’s shuffling a bit of its hardware around next week (making upgrades and the like), and as a result of this in-house tinkering, several titles will be effectively shut down. HAWX 2, The Settlers 7 and Might and Magic: Heroes 6 will all be inaccessible while Ubisoft gets its hardware sorted – there’s no estimation from the company regarding how long this will take.
Ubisoft’s servers shut down on February 7, locking out thousands of players for an unknown duration. And while this information certainly serves to support the anti-always-on DRM argument, Ubisoft still believes in the concept and considers it a shining success.
What do you think? Should a publisher have the ability to shut down your games remotely (either on purpose or by accident), or should you control access to games you buy?

Both L.A. Noire and L.A. Noire: Complete Edition are available for download as of today.
Love solving crimes? What about interrogating shady characters? If so, Rockstar has you covered. The company announced today that L.A. Noire and L.A. Noire: Complete Edition are both available on the PSN store, meaning you can get in on the joy of solving gruesome murders all without having to walk down to the local game store.
L.A. Noire includes the basic game as it was launched, and will run you $31.99 (thanks, discount!). The Complete Edition, which is priced at $34.99, includes the full original game as well as every bit of DLC that’s been released since the game hit shelves. Honestly, for $3 more you’d be crazy not to upgrade to the full version.
L.A. Noire wasn’t as well received as some of Rockstar’s other games, but it’s worth noting that they mostly put the game together after Team Bondi tried and failed. That being said, the game is still an interesting narrative experience, so if you’re looking for a way to kill some time over the holidays and don’t want to pitch for a brand new game, L.A. Noire could be the way to go. It’s no Red Dead Redemption, but it’s still pretty good by most accounts.
What did you think of L.A. Noire?

Dirt Showdown headed in 2012
The new trailer that's more destruction than derby.
The DIRT series gets a new upgrade in this trailer for Dirt Showdown
The Dirt Series expaned from the Colin McCrae Universe of games such as GRID,  to become a racing series in it's own right. The latest iteration, Dirt Showdown will recall you back to the good old days of Destruction Derby where cars were just the new generation of battering ram in the world of racing.
The game looks really good, if all things were judged on their trailers. Starting off with the classic motif of a car doing a burnout to show that things were going around in circles with the series - before storming off into the battlefield where hundreds of cars lay in wait for our competitor. The explosions and cheers ring out as the first hit is made and there we have a new franchise born.
I loved playing Destruction Derby 2 back in the day on the old PS1. The game was a mix of NASCAR and Twisted Metal, just without the characters or macarbe insanity. The game series kind of faded out by the PS2 era but maybe it's time for Sony to bring it back. I'm a bit of a fan of the DIRT and GRID series so I might pick this one up too.

The lovable indie game shows up on one of gaming’s biggest platforms, with a few upgrades to boot.
Cave Story is a simple but innovated platformer created by independent game developer Daisuke Amaya. The game was initially released for free, but its massive success gave it the opportunity to pop up in a few different mediums. Versions popped up all over the gaming world, but the two most high profile ports are likely the 3DS version and the one that has just dropped to Steam.
This latest iteration of Cave Story, now downloadable on Steam for around $10 depending on your region, has a completely remastered soundtrack and a slightly overhauled graphics engine. Nothing so serious that you won’t recognize the game, but just enough to make it worth shelling out a few bucks in lieu of downloading the free version.
Cave Story has seen high praise for its sheer size, causing many reviewers to compare it to classic platformers such as Castlevania and Metroid. The game features fast-paced shooting in tight spaces, with tons and tons of enemies attacking from all sides. The whole thing looks pretty chaotic, and reminds me of some of the more intense side-scrolling shooters of the old days.
Here’s a link to the game’s entry on Steam, if you’re interested in giving it a try: Cave Story
Do you like seeing indie developers spread their products out and make some money, or should free games stay free?

PayDay The Heist
I've talked before about bias and I feel like I have to clarify that despite my interview last week, I feel like a good game developer should listen to fans who speak clearly and with clarity. I hope they read the review in hope that their next game, hopefully another PayDay, will be better and that Overkill will be pleased with this honest review.
The game of PayDay The Heist, is not a simple game, 'tis a complex head blend of working together and patience. Seeing a fallen team mate will make your heart pound more, especially when playing with friends, but the second you see that cash, it may be too late for your friend and even later for those around you. Okay, PayDay is a simple game of four guys who steal money and that is all I can say about the plot. To be honest, there is no plot, but who cares, let's steal some money.
The game's mix of Left 4 Dead's comradery and Kane and Lynch's love of heists, brings Overkill Software's PayDay The Heist to a place I'd hoped a co-op game would come to eventually - a game of fun and eventually, betrayal. The game is set between a series of distinct, but fairly similar, scenarios in which you have to run and gun as you make your way to a fairly large sum of money.
This sum is arbirtrary int the world of the game, but does provide a good upgrade system as you earn "reputation", to go along with it, you better enjoy the game or at least the premise. Whilst there was some speculation from the game's "every game is different" I'm somewhat happy to report that this is more or less true. It's true in that no game I've played, even on the same level, has had the same scenario, except for a few instances of SWAT teams invading at particular times and the amount of time it may take you to drill through a gate or burn through to a vault.
The less, is the amount of fun you will get from the game, you will have levels you won't like, players you won't like and scenarios which will be frustrating. The game does not have a sophisticated AI Director, a lá L4D, but it does have a good sense of direction when it comes to helping you play through a scenario. There is often an even amount of ammo on the ground or good place to take cover, but more or less if your buddies aren't around the director will screw you over and you may have to let go a hostage just so you can play, some time later.
There are a few arbitrary or minor issues, mainly graphical and audio ones, first and foremost the fact that when I look outside on some of the maps, the SWAT and police members will become glitchy ghosts that are just waiting to enter the nether worlds of the heist, a bit ironic considering what me and my heist-mates are about to do. There are a lot of glitches that could be easily fixed, such as Team AI, such as in Heat Street or Panic Room.
They will sometimes go through the props in the level and it really throws you out of the experience, as does the fact that the buzz saws on the Panic Room level doesn't really cut and the drill in the other levels don't drill. It'd be a simple animation, unlike the running. I wasn't sure if it was my internet cocking up or the game just had a weird animation. Turned out to be the later. It's a bit weird, especially when characters are crouching.
I do have to say the game is quite gory, especially when you shoot up close or get a good headshot (which is rewarded, in-game) Other than that, the game looks pretty good, Overkill, not stunning, but enough to make you enjoy it more than Kane and Lynch 2 but less than Portal 2. The game looks good on the modded Diesel engine, let's just leave it at that.
How it sounds is amazing. I do have one gripe that the fact the Heisters don't have more than a few catchphrases, even when you're telling the hostages to "get down" "get down" "get down", you think they were about to start a DJ set, not a heist. It's a small problem but it's always something that's really gotten me down, especially after other games such as Uncharted, The Simpsons Game and SWAT 4, have all had good simple voice acting gigs and rarely have a repeated line, hell, hire me for $10 an hour and I'll record whatever the heck you want. That being said, some of their dialogue is amusing, not on the level of the castmates of L4D or their sequel, but still a wry smile forms between getting shot at and restarting saws/drills.
Sound effects, which is quite different from the voices, are absolutely fantastic. In my interview last week with Simon Viklund he stated his favourite sound effect was the shotgun and I could not agree more. Having it unlocked as you go into the game is a sight for sore eyes as the world seems to go a lot better (depending on your level and experience, of course)  but having that fire into a bulldozer is more than satisfying as you continue through your heist. The music is always rarring for me to get into the game. The perfect music starts off the game, it reminds me of the opening of The Dark Knight and as it flashes up the face masks of our heistmates, you are ready, you just are.
Wolf's frightening bloodied mask, Dallas' patriotic smile, Hoxton's red eyebrows and Chains cross eyes are fairly distinct as well and all provide a great opening to the game, but the menus and a few visual cues leave a lot to be desired. A lot could have made the game look really flashy and interesting but a simple pallette of black, yellow and grey makes it look as if the game is ready to be taped up behind Police Lines
Finally, the gameplay. The game is broken up into six different levels. First World Bank, a traditional bank heist, Heat Street, a plan gone wrong, chase'em down, Panic Room, a break in, break it out mission, Green Bridge, shooting in the rain...I'm just shooting in the rain, Diamond Heist, a sneak in smash and grab and finaally, Slaughterhouse...is exactly what it sounds like.
To focus on the more difficult and interesting levels, Green Bridge is the most exciting, being in the rain, breaking over prison convoys, donned in yellow raincoats and escorting a chinese prisoner. Things just escalate, even when you start on a half-exploded bridge. The level is fun and exciting and atmospheric at it's core. The most fun is probably Panic Room, simply due to how cool you can act before the heist starts and
Diamond Heist is quite difficult and starts off sneaking, but if someone's being an asshat, this plan can and will go awry in a matter of minutes. This one is best to be kept in the shadows. Sure, cops will be alerted eventually, but planning and timing your moves to silently take out the security guards is a wonderful sense of fun and comradery I wouldn't change for the world.
Slaughterhouse is just chaos. Starts off with a "The Usual Suspects" scenario as a bunch of trucks pull up outside a warehouse and you have to take them out and kill a lot of people while you take some money out of Secure Van.  Gold everywhere and bulldozers stormed during the last few minutes after the Gold came out and it was insane.
The Single Player mode is fairly useless as are the AI from time to time and when you can turn the AI on for not having enough players in the online mode, what difference would it make? Why wouldn't you play online? This game could've done better with co-op and a better matchmaking system as well. The difficult system alone is quite confusing, not that they're confusing in general, but it's enough to question a thing or two.
For example, the last two modes (Slaughter and Diamond)  are available on the hardest setting, and I do have to question why. The levels themselves are as complex as Panic Room and require less in-game set pieces.  It boggles the mind on why they're specifically hard, possibly a question I should put to Simon, next time I talk to him.
PayDay The Heist is a great game, it has great play but could have been better. There is so much here that could have been even a great storyline, but Overkill has made a decision to make it for hard and fast gamers. Varying difficulty levels, great upgrade system and some fairly intriguing level design, makes this a must-have PSN title.
Harrison HAS  E. is in jail from pulling an EB Games heist. He's serving hard time for Grand Theft GTA.

paydayheist2PayDay The Heist has made it's way to Europe on Steam and PSN and Harrison E. has decided to steal some words and give the heist-sim a whirl.

The developers of the massively popular Star Traders and Cyber Knights have created an all-new game for the Android Market, titled Templar Assault.
The Android Marketplace doesn’t seem to get much love from the gaming press, which is a shame considering the high number of great titles available for gamers that have opted to ignore  iOS devices. Two of the most successful games for Android game in the form of Star Traders and Cyber Knights, both developed by a two-man team of brothers. As of today, you can add a third title to their resume: Templar Assault.
If you’re a fan of strategy games, Templar Assault is likely right up your alley. The game is a squad-based, turn-based strategy RPG that works similar in description to Advance Wars – i.e. players move units across the map and use them to attack other units. The game is packed with upgrades and unlockables, as an RPG should be, and promises at least a few hours of game time.
You can pick up Templar Assault on the Android Market right now, completely free of charge. As has become the custom, the Trese Brothers have made the game free to download, at least at first. They usually upgrade to a paid version once they’re finished with development.
So if you’ve got some time to kill but no money to spend, Templar Assault could be the perfect solution for a boring Monday afternoon.
What other awesome Android games haven’t received their due respect?

If you’re one of the many PC gamers that picked up Battlefield 3 today (or last night), it’s fitting to assume you updated your graphics card drivers before you started the install. After all, with the insane problems we saw during the Rage launch, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. If you didn’t, now is the time to get those drivers updated and ensure your system is running at peak performance.
Nvidia card owners are getting a little help from the manufacturer, who has released a brand new set of drivers specifically for the launch of Battlefield 3. The new drivers offer what Nvidia claims to be an 11% improvement in performance, which is more than enough to make or break a heated multiplayer match. With Battlefield 3 being hailed as one of the best-looking PC games ever, it’s only fitting that you’d need to upgrade or update something in order to experience it in its full glory.
Here’s some technical jargon from the Nvidia website:
For Battlefield 3 we’ve improved performance by up to 11% since the release of the GeForce 285.38 beta drivers, have included several compatibility enhancements, a new and improved SLI profile, and a 3D Vision profile. Similarly, Rage has received enhancements since the release of the same drivers, and Batman: Arkham City compatibility has been implemented.
As mentioned, updates contained within the earlier beta drivers have been carried over, such as the many performance improvements made to games --between the release of the 280.26 WHQL drivers and today’s 285.62 WHQL drivers-- when running on our entire range of 500-Series graphics cards.
On the GeForce GTX 580, for example, SLI users can expect to receive frame rate boosts of up to:
• 13% in Metro 2033,
• 8% in STALKER: Call of Pripyat,
• 7% in Civilization V,
• 7% in F1 2010,
• 5% in Crysis 2 with the DirectX 11 Ultra Upgrade enabled,
• 5% in Lost Planet 2,
• And 5% in Mafia 2.
So, even if you’re not playing Battlefield 3, you may as well pick up the new drivers. You can find the full list of changes and affected games by clicking this link, and you can bounce over to Nvidia and download the new drivers by clicking this one. Party on!
Also, if you are playing BF3 – how’s it going? I haven’t had a chance to pick up my copy yet.

Electronic Entertainment Design and Research reports that for the first time in gaming history, the number of people buying DLC is higher than the number of people that don’t.
Downloadable content has become an integral part of the games industry. What first started as a way to get little bits of extra content has turned into a full-fledged marketing plan for developers, with DLC ideas incorporated directly into the initial game design. Some critics of DLC even argue that developers are pushing out half-finished games and leaving the rest to downloadable content in order to bilk gamers out of extra cash.
Whatever your opinion on DLC (mine is that I don’t mind it when it’s in addition to an already great game), it looks like gamers are warming up to paying a few extra dollars to lengthen the life of their digital products. A recent study by Electronic Entertainment Design and Research indicates that 51% of console owners purchased DLC in the last 12 months, compared to only 40% during the previous year.
Roughly speaking, that means around 20 million North American (the study doesn’t cover Europe or Asia) gamers have purchased some form of DLC, whether it be map packs, weapon upgrades or extra story content. These purchases amounted to around $875 million for developers and publishers, with the EEDR estimating DLC sales will top $1 billion in 2012.
One strange thing indicated by the organization’s graph is that the majority of people that have avoided DLC, a whopping 47%, did so out of “privacy” concerns. I don’t really understand the logic, assuming those people are already linked into PSN or Live (maybe they aren’t). Another major factor was the complete lack of a return policy, which makes a little more sense to me. I’m curious to know how many teen players were unable to buy content they wanted due to parental controls, but there’s no data in the chart to help with that.
Did you spend any cash on DLC this year? I know I bought some Mass Effect 2 stuff, but I think that’s about it. Normally when I eye DLC I’m exclusively looking for story expansions – not maps or weapons.

While Coldplay has long been a feature (for some reason) of the Guitar Hero franchise, they’ve remained elusive for Rock Band players until just this week.
Rock Band and Guitar Hero are brilliant concepts, when you look at them from the point of view of a developer. You create a simple game, give players some plastic instruments, and then release new song packs every few weeks to keep people interested. The development demands are relatively low, but the enthusiasm for new music helps keep profits up.
Harmonix is now ready to cash in on a band that has, until recently, managed to remain exclusive to the Guitar Hero franchise. This week, British mega-band Coldplay will make their debut appearance in the Rock Band music store, with a track pack featuring some of their more popular songs – “Clocks,” “Fix You,” “The Scientist,” “Viva la Vida” and “Yellow” – and a brand new single from their upcoming album, titled “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall.” That’s six songs total for Coldplay fanatics or Rock Band players so desperate for new songs to play that they’ll download whatever comes along.
Here’s the cost breakdown for the new songs:
$1.99/200 Wii Points/160 MS Points per song
$9.99/1,000 Wii Points/800 MS Points for the whole pack
You can also upgrade “Clocks and “Yellow” to take advantage of Rock Band’s Pro Guitar and Pro Bass mode, but seriously, it’s Coldplay. There’s like, maybe three chords in this entire song pack. Personally, I’m amazed the band can even play a show without putting themselves to sleep.
Are you excited to see Coldplay on the Rock Band music store?

The cute and cuddly Guardian Cub gives World of Warcraft players a somewhat safe method for turning real dollars into digital gold, but may not be the gold-farmer takedown many are imagining.
For years, World of Warcraft players interested in skipping nasty grinds or boring resource farming turned to the billion-dollar black market that is digital currency sales. For just a few of your hard-earned real life dollars, you could buy a nice pile of gold to use for item upgrades, rare recipes and, most commonly, your epic flying skill.
What many gold buyers didn’t realize is that the gold they purchased didn’t necessarily come from farmers, but game from the hacked accounts of their fellow gamers. Gold buying is the leading cause of account theft in WoW, as gold sellers strip as many accounts as they can to keep up with demand. Now, Blizzard seems to have made it easier and safer for you to use your actual money to buy fake money, via the in-game Guardian Cub pet.
Here’s how it works – you, the player, want to earn some extra gold. You purchase a couple of these Guardian Cubs for $10, then you put them up on the auction house. While you can’t sell the pet immediately, it is bind-on-equip and once the initial cooldown expires you are free to trade it however you see fit. A player with gold to burn then purchases the pet, giving you in-game money for your real-life purchase.
Blizzard even confirmed this as a possible use:
“While our goal is to offer players alternative ways to add a Pet Store pet to their collection, we’re ok with it if some players choose to use the Guardian Cub as a safe and secure way to try to acquire a little extra in-game gold without turning to third-party gold-selling services.”
It’s an interesting strategy, and one that has worked well in EVE (where players sell game time for currency). However, it’s worth noting that the auction house is a buyer’s market – if a large number of players are trying to make gold by selling Guardian Cubs, the eventual price drop may still make Chinese gold farming operations a more lucrative investment for your character.
We’lll just have to wait and see how this impacts the economy and gold buying market. What do you think of this new method for earning World of Warcraft gold?

Despite a booming negative reaction from critics and fans around the web, Apple breaks its own record and proves that demand is still strong for its iPhone device.
A couple of weeks ago, the internet was all aflutter with rumors about Apple’s next big product launch. Tech lovers were certain that an iPhone 5 was on the horizon, and eagerly awaited the announcement at Apple’s “Let’s Talk Phone” event. Instead, fans of the brand simply got another iPhone 4, albeit with improved hardware. The iPhone 4S looks the same on the outside as its predecessor, but is twice as fast and boasts a more powerful battery.
Naturally, some fans felt let down by the event, hoping instead for a brand new iPhone to fawn over. Reaction was less than enthusiastic, with may iPhone owners seeing the announcement as another cash grab by Apple. These thoughts didn’t seem to have an effect on sales of the device though; the iPhone 4S is being pre-orders at a rate that eclipses that of any other device.
In the first 24 hours, consumers purchased over one million of the new 4S iPhones. The big numbers aren’t entirely a surprise – many Verizon customers were simply waiting for a new iPhone, since the 4 was relatively dated when it game to their network. Additionally, this is the first time the iPhone has been available on Sprint, so the potential customer base has expanded dramatically.
Of course, many iPhone 4 owners are still going to stay away from the product, as it doesn’t represent a significant upgrade from the previous version. A new camera with 1080p video support, faster processor and dual antenna may simply not be enough to sell another expensive phone to someone that’s had theirs for under a year.
Are you purchasing an iPhone 4S, or are you happy with your current mobile platform?
