Spoiler alert: it’s going to be shitty.
Hey, remember that Twisted Metal movie that no one wanted, ever? Well, it’s finally coming out! Sony Pictures just tapped Brian Taylor, the mastermind behind film classics such as Crank and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, to direct a film based on the Twisted Metal franchise. It’s a good choice from a studio perspective – there’s no one better at making smash and crash movies with little to no substance.
According to the announcement, the film will center on combatants who use customized vehicles in fights to the death. So the original subject matter appears to have remained intact. Sweet Tooth and Doll Face will appear in the film, and that’s about all the details we have. Based on what we know about the genre, we can assume there will be one hot chick, one tough chick (played by Michelle Rodriguez, who dies), and a winning hero.
Honestly, how much do we need to know about a Twisted Metal movie? It’s going to be violent, poorly acted, and probably set to Skrillex music. And I’m sort of okay with that. It’s not like the games are some sort of bastion of innovative storytelling.
Do you think a Twisted Metal movie has any chance of being good? Or is it destined to join Super Mario Bros. and Doom in the Video Game Movie Hall of Shame?

Back in October of 2010, Doom was removed from the Xbox Live Arcade lineup due to expiring rights. When Zenimax expired Id Software, it sort of threw all of the latter company’s franchises into the air. Of course, Zenimax did note that the games would return soon – which apparently means “In about a year.”
If you’ve been patiently waiting for Doom to show up on XBLA again, today is your day. You can download it right this very minute, for the low, low price of $5. It’s sort of amazing when you think of it – with all this innovation and all these million-dollar games, we’re still spending money on the game that basically invented the FPS genre.

Social Game Head: "Vita will die a premature death"
Bossa Studio Head Henrique Olifiers claims there will not be a future for Vita in 2012
Henrique Olifiers and Bossa Studios have been known in the past to make slightly "too honest" claims about the future of gaming. Back in June of this year Bossa called out social games, saying they were 'the lowest common denominator" and that they lose "their creative identity" in the game design process...which is actually quite true, but his recent comments on the Vita may be a bit too honest for some Sony fans liking.
In an interview with Videogamer.com, Olifiers commented on many different things in the gaming industry, such as the unifying nature Valve may bring one day:  "Valve is bang on: proprietary stuff is madness, we should be moving to more open platforms, to interoperability, bringing everyone together,"
And this is where the comment about Vita slowly came into play: "...If this is not the motto for the big console manufacturers, not only will we not be there - they're likely to die a horrible premature death, the kind of which I think the Vita will suffer from."
Olifiers said that the dedicated console market's straight up detraction from the idea of  cross-platform compatibility is holding the medium back. Olifiers claims that without the help of more companies to make sure more people are gaming, that the medium may be doomed to be a "walled garden." Olifier hates the fact you can't play cross-platform and wants to live in  a world  "where people are freely connected," which I think is incredibly positive in the realm of gaming, especially handhelds. However, Olifiers was not totally dismissive of the platform.
When asked if his social gaming studio, Bossa studios, would be making games for the PS Vita, Olifiers said: "We'll keep on the lookout to see what the next gen will bring, but if they want more focus on tech specs rather than usability and accessibility, I don't think it will be for us."  Bossa actually has the recently ex-Sony developer Yoshifusa Hayama, who was once apart of Team Ico.
Whilst I think Henrique may be just stirring the pot, there have been a few problematic things for the Vita, even before the release. The recent news of the Japanese demand being a bit too much for Sony could cause a lot of poorly and quickly made Vita's and the fact that Canada won't have 3G support for some time is another problem, but I guess we'll see when the Vita comes out next year in the Western World.

MMO's launch with the wrong business model
With a focus on high profit and low content, large scale MMO's are doomed, according to Gene Hoffman.
Gene Hoffman is the CEO of the payment firm Vindica and has been focusing on MMO's for the past couple of years. Helping with titles usch as Star Trek Online, Rift and Champions Online, Hoffman believes that a weak launch period has forced a lot of companies to adopt the F2P model. Hoffman said some of the MMO's that are launching are "really bad", but that you don't want to say "that too loudly to them," but that you also need to tell them they need "a lot more content before they launch."
Hoffman suggested the possibility of a "paid beta" and to tell the users that it's pretty good and that you'll be able to play. Also tell the developers and users that you're "not going to fill the whole world until three months from now," but if they sign up now, they'll give them the game free after release. Hoffman also suggested other business models.
Hoffman also said something about how Apple's 30 % revenue was ridiculous, but that's neither here nor there, he is right about the MMO models. There has always been something other than my lack of time that has pulled me away from playing MMO's. More often than not, it's just something I'm either not interested in or will not continue to be interested in. To give a good example, I heard about APB some time ago back in 08 and the idea of a GTA MMO was great to me, but after a rocky start, I was quite turned off to the idea.
The game went into post-release hiatus then returned later this year and now has 3 million users worldwide on the free-to-play model. The game is quite good from what I've heard, but even though it's free, I probably won't be playing it any time soon without some better word of mouth. Hoffman knows where the best MMORPG's are at when it comes to having a balance between content and price and that a lot of games are simply not doing either.

Germany Unbans Quake
Hang on, I'm looking up...what's German for too little too late?
The classic id software game Quake has finally become available to play in Germany for the first time in almost a decade and a half. The amazing FPS was developed sometime between Theme Hospital and Half Life 1 and Germany thought it was a good idea to protect the entire country from it's frightening blocky embrace by banning it outright.
The decision came after August when the other famous id software shooters, Doom and Doom 2 were released from the Kraken-like prison of being apart of Germany's large selection of banned games. Whilst the game was a bit of tech wizardry back in 1996, the 3D engine was fanastically rendered and actually helped shape the way we play games today, as the original Team Fortress mod was on the Quake Engine.
According to Heise Online, game publishers can request that their games be removed after a minimum of ten years from the Youth Media Endangerment list. Recently added to that list was the 2011 release of Dead Island, so Germans will probably see that come out in what, 2021? It's not worth it, Germans, not heaps anyway.
Other than possibly games like RapeLay, I feel that banning media unless it's particularly harmful is wrong and ridiculous in this age of internet. If people want something, they're gonna find anyway or means to get it. I wonder how many German people have played Quake. I remember a great friend of mine telling me when he went to an internet café in Germany and he was asked for ID after slamming down some Euros, he laughed so hard initially then he saw how serious the guy behind the counter was and slipped away.

The museum invited the public to help select the video games to be included in the exhibition. The 240 games on the ballot were selected by Chris Melissinos, who worked with the museum and an advisory group consisting of game developers, designers, industry pioneers, and journalists.
The games were selected based on a variety of criteria, including visual effects, creative use of new technologies, how the game fit into the narrative of the exhibition, and how world events and popular culture influenced the message of the game.
Voting took place between February 14 and April 17, 2011. More than 3.7 million votes were cast by 119,000 people in 175 countries!

And now for some update on the upcoming Mass Effect movie. Yes, it definitely is happening, in case that fact still hasn't registered in your head.
Movie studio Legendary Pictures has divulged some more details on the Hollywood adaptation of the famous Bioware series, confirming that Commander Shepard will indeed be taking front and center yet again.
However, take note that it's going to be the male ComShep, John, and not the lovely female. Not that there's anything wrong with that, though. The storyline, too, is said to be taking on a brand new story, totally distinct from what the first two games had to offer. Yeah, we had that tingling sense of doom, too. We don't really know which way it's going to go, or if it's going to be touching on the storyline of Mass Effect 3, even. What we do know is that BioWare has confirmed that Commander Shepard's story will reach its end in the third iteration of the series.
Apart from that, the rumor that actor Seth Green will be taking on the role of Joker was debunked. So as it stands, we have no clue as to who's going to be in the film.
So, really, apart from this teeny bitty sense of information, everything's still pretty much hush-hush on the Mass Effect movie. As with any movie adaptation of a video game, we just hope they do the series justice, or else don't bother making it at all.

Although Resistance 3 is supposed to end the adventure  Nathan and Joe, Insomniac believes that there's still room for more story growth.
Insomniac Games' senior designer Cameron Christian and writer Jon Paquette sat down for an interview with CVG, and here Paquette was quoted as saying:
"The franchise is really strong and I think the universe is great to play in. You saw the reveal of Burning skies [for PS Vita] over at Gamescom and that's just one example of another game that could be made on a different piece of hardware, with a different main character but in the same universe. I think it's still fertile ground."
He furthered, "We've been saying that there's so much that you could do with the Chimera and all of the weapons and everything... it's cool to see what other people would do with it."
The Resistance 3: Doomsday Edition is now up for pre-order, which comes out simultaneously with the standalone edition later this month. Insomniac is also coming out with a new single player demo with Move and 3D.

Apparently, only Freddie Wong can put a halt to the development of Resistance 3. Reportedly, developers Insomniac Games gave up one full day of work on the highly anticipated title to accommodate the shoot for the Wong's mock up of future gaming video.
In the video, Wong goes up against custom Chimera soldiers, duly animated by the devs. The Internet sensation claims that the awesome motion tech as this actually does exist already, though not exactly in full potential form. If this is how the future of gaming looks like, then it's most certainly something to watch out for.
Resistance 3 comes out exclusively for the PS3 tomorrow, September 6th. If you're looking for something more collectible than just the standalone copy, then there's the Doomsday Edition for you to get your hands on. In the meantime, check out the Trophies list so you'll know what other challenges are in store for you in the game.

As they say, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. After having a couple of screenshots leaked from DotA 2, Valve took it upon themselves to finally release the official one.
Yes, it's straight out from Valve's studios, and this shot showcases the Doom Bringer. It comes right in time, too, since the game will be tagging along at Gamescom happening this week in Cologne, Germany.
Although they did respond to the leakage by coming out with the first official screen of the game, Valve remains quiet on the matter, offering nary a comment about said loophole in their security.
If you happen to be dropping by Gamescom this week, you might want to check out The International tournament, which will feature 16 of the best DotA gamers in the world.
