Despite an ongoing rivalry, EA has nothing but positive remarks for the “games as services” philosophy Activision has adapted.
Call of Duty Elite is a premium subscription service that launched with Modern Warfare 3. The service comes with a few perks, such as future DLC packs and advanced clan support. And while many gamers lamented CoD Elite as yet another cash grab, Electronic Arts sees it as an opportunity in the making.
In an earnings call with investors this morning, EA CEO John Riccitiello fired off a quick compliment to Activision, EA’s primary competition in the FPS market. He noted that adding a subscription to an FPS game (MW3) was a “best-in-class performance,” and that EA would be looking for similar ways to further monetize its franchises. Battlefield Elite, anyone?
The “games as services” movement is picking up steam, with companies like Activision leading the charge. Publishers are on the hunt for any method of expanding revenue, and the massive success of CoD Elite has gone a long way towards proving that the subscription model works.
What do you think? Would you pay for a CoD Elite-type service on Battlefield or Mass Effect 3?

The first round of Battlefield 3 DLC is now available on all platforms. Take that, PS3 owners.
PlayStation 3 owners have been enjoying Battlefield 3’s Back to Karkand expansion for the last week or so, but we Xbox 360 and PC players are getting our first taste of the new maps today. As of my writing this post, Back to Karkand is now available for purchase through the Xbox marketplace and Origin – it’s also free for anyone that owns a Limited Edition copy of the game.
Back to Karkand includes four maps from Battlefield 2, each one painstakingly rebuilt in the new Frostbite 2 engine. Destruction runs rampant and there are even a few new vehicles to check out. DICE has also added a new feature called “Assignments,” a series of challenges you can complete to unlock brand new weapons. This is by far the most interesting addition, though the maps are nice.
As for whether a bunch of old maps and a few new weapons are worth your valuable dollars, that’s up to you. I somehow ended up with a Limited Edition despite not pre-ordering, so I’ll be enjoying a bit of Back to Karkand later this evening.
Pick up Back to Karkand here for Xbox and Here for PC, for either 1200 MS Points or $14.99 (steep!).
Have you checked the expansion out yet? What do you think?

There’s still a bit of gas left in the holiday game release schedule, even though most of the big titles have already launched. Tomorrow’s 2GB Battlefield patch brings bug fixes, balance changes, and a few other goodies.
We knew that a Battlefield 3 patch was on the way, and we knew that it resolved a few glaring issues (like the tactical light – get it!? Glaring?!), but the full extent of the patch wasn’t really clear until the full patch notes went public. After a quick glance through, it’s obvious DICE is serious about keeping their game as balanced and fun as possible.
The bulk of the 2GB patch is content for the upcoming Back to Karkand DLC pack, but the rest is all adjustments to existing game mechanics. Among the fixes? A big nerf to mortars, a buff to jet cannons, spawn point adjustment and a ton of tiny tweaks to weapons. Here’s the full list of changes, courtesy of Battlelog:
Bugfixes
• Fixed a problem with spawn timer now showing blue border on startup and lost spawn point
• Fixed a problem where player who joined queuing on End of round got spawn screen stuck on screen, but unable to do anything with it until next round loaded
• Fixed a problem where camera would change to 3rd person on killcam when killcam was turned off in server settings
• Fixed stat references on several dogtags
• Fixed for surveillance ribbon not counting TUGS
• Fixed a missing combat area lines on the minimap for Grand Bazaar conquest small
• Moved a tank spawn in US base on Caspian Border so it would not be destroyed by a falling tree
• Fixed a problem where placing C4 with the russians soldier was playing US faction VO
• Fixed a problem where TV guided missiles could be shot into its own helicopter and destroy it
• Fixed a problem when attempting to fire lock on weapons without a target
• Tweaked the chat, it should now be a bit easier to read
• Fixed several vehicles that did not properly shoot rockets and guns towards their predictive sights
• Fixed the G17 Supressed Laser not working properly
• Added alternate HUD colors to help colorblinds
• Added a network interpolation setting. This allows users with good bandwidth reduce latency, but might increase some stuttering. The user can find what works best for his connection by tweaking the slider.
• Increased the Spawn protection radius on TDM
• Fixed a problem with smoke on land vehicles, Missiles should now miss more often
• Fixed a problem where users could end up with IRNV scope in any vehicle
• Fixed a problem where player dies if vaulting over a ledge and into water while sprinting
• Fixed several crashes and increased general stability
• Fixed a problem where the user was unable to revive two players that have the bodies one over the other
• Fixed so you can assign an axis and use as a digital input. This makes it possible for the player (on pc) to assign one of the sticks on a gameped to be used for throttle/brake.
• Fixed a problem with the Kill camera acting up when suiciding from parachute
• Fixed air radar was showing to much. now lasertagged, heatsignature above threshold, enemy missiles and capture points are only visible on air radar
• Fixed a problem where the game would enter a technical hang if the user pressed pause menu and tilde at the same time
• Fixed a problem where you could get green flashes on screen
• You can now reassign cycle weapons
• Fixed so the weapon zooms automatically after bipod deploy is gone when using zoom toggle
• Fixed a problem where the parachute would stay stuck in air if the owner was killed
Balance Tweaks
• Fixed several weapons so they are properly suppressed and hide the player on the minimap when fired.
• Tweaked Tactical Light so it is not as blinding over longer ranges.
• Tweaked the IRNV scope so it is limited to usage only at close range.
• Reduced heat masking effectiveness of Spec Ops Camo.
• Fixed a bug where Ammo spec would give additional 40mm grenades instead of Frag spec.
• Increased the number of additional 40mm grenades from Frag spec.
• Fixed so AT mines only live for 20 seconds after a player dies to prevent infinite mines.
• Increased the Time to Live on sniper caliber rounds to allow extreme distance shots.
• Fixed several weapon descriptions, calibers, and fire rates. The weapons themselves have not changed.
• Fixed so the M9 and MP443 pistol can be equipped by the opposing faction when it is unlocked at 100 kills.
• Fixed Laser Guided Missiles missing their targets if the target is moving too fast.
• Reduced the effectiveness of Stealth on Air Vehicles.
• Reduced the effectiveness of Beam Scanning for Jets.
• Reduced the damage done to Armored Vehicles and Infantry from AA guns.
• Increased the damage RPGs and Tank shells do to AA vehicles.
• Slightly decreased the accuracy for all weapons on fully automatic, burst fire is now preferable at mid to long range.
• Increased the effective accuracy of long bursts for LMGs when using a bipod.
• Slightly increased the range of the 44magnum bullets.
• Increased the close range damage of 4.6x30mm and 5.7x28mm bullets.
• Increased the reload time of the Mortar from 3.5sec to 4.8sec and increased the time it takes before a shell hits the ground.
• Reduced the aimed accuracy bonus given by a Suppressor for the MP7, P90, PP2000, PP-19, and UMP45.
• Increased the range and FOV for designating targets with the SOFLAM and vehicle Laser Designators.
• Decreased the effectiveness of 12g FRAG ammo when equipped on semi-automatic and automatic shotguns.
• Slightly Increased the power of Fighter Jet Cannons against all vehicle targets, especially Helicopters.
• Decreased the power of Miniguns against Jets and Helicopters.
• Increased the power of Stingers against Jets.
• Flares reload times for Jets and Helicopter Gunners have been increased.
• Tweaked the AN94 so its burst fire better conveys the real world advantage offered by this weapon.
• Added Single Shot to the AN94 as an available fire mode.
• Slightly increased the recoil on the M416 and removed the Burst Fire mode (this weapon incorrectly had burst fire, which was not authentic).
• Tweaked the spawns for TDM on Kharg Island, Grand Bazaar, Caspian Border, Seine Crossing, Operation Firestorm, Damavand Peak and Noshahar Canals
• Moved a tank spawn in US base on Caspian Border so it would not be destroyed by a falling tree
• Tweaked the Gas station Capture area on Conquest on Caspian Border
• Tweaked the max vehicle height on Noshahar Canals
So there’s that. See anything you like?

Back to Karkand is almost here. Can you feel it in the air?
The first DLC pack for Battlefield 3, titled Back to Karkand, is coming very, very soon. Hoping to gin up a little excitement for the re-designed maps, EA and DICE have released a trailer specific to the Gulf of Oman map, which makes its triumphant return from Battlefield 2.
Check it out here:
If you didn’t catch it through the chaos, there are a few new things going on in this trailer. Number one, the Short Take-Off/Vertical Landing jet is back in the game, as is the classic desert buggy. There’s also….is that a bulldozer?! Oh, Battlefield.
Back to Karkand still doesn’t have an official release date, but I’m guessing you can expect it in the second week of December. Here’s why – if it were the first week (i.e. next week), they would have announced it. And it can’t be the third week, since PS3 owners get it a week early, which would put the Xbox/PS3 launch right in the middle of the Christmas holidays. Which means the second week is the most sensible place to drop it.
Of course, that’s just a guess. What do you think of the new vehicles/explosions?

If you’ve been busy with holiday preparations or fighting off dragon invasions, here are some things you may have missed.
It’s been a somewhat busy week for the games industry, though most of the news has to do with titles that have already been released rather than things that are about to come out. We’re fast approaching the end of the crazy rush of releases and people seem to be settling down into their gaming habits.
Modern Warfare, Battlefield and Skyrim dominated the news this week, and plenty of commenters stormed our posts to let their voices heard. So without further ado, here’s your:
Infinity Ward Swings the MW3 Banhammer
Modern Warfare 3 has been out since the 8th, and lead creative strategist Robert Bowling has confirmed that Infinity Ward has already banned over 1,600 players for cheating, hacking and glitching. Most people seem pretty happy about Infinity Ward’s commitment to stopping cheating, but some commenters can’t resist another chance to take pot shots at the Call of Duty franchise.
PS3 Battlefield 3 Owners Getting Battlefield 1943
Sony’s Jack Tretton announced that the PS3 version of Battlefield 3 would come packed with Battlefield 1943, but that bonus failed to materialize. Some gamers filed a class action lawsuit against EA (which I still don’t understand), and faced with intense media pressure and the ire of Battlefield fans everywhere, the developer caved. So, free Battlefield 1943 for everyone!
EB Games Canada Dropping Pre-Owned Games
There is a rumor floating around the retail games industry that EB Games, a subsidiary of GameStop, is planning to mix its used and new games together. The familiar yellow “used” tags will be replaced with white “used” tags, so while the games will still be noted as used products, the similar labels may confuse less savvy gamers. We’re still waiting to see how this story plays out.
Skyrim Map Contains all of Tamriel
One gamer’s realization that the entire landmass of Tamriel is built into the map for Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim led us to wonder why exactly the content was included. Some venture it’s intended as a resource for modders, some think it’s just to add realism to the environment, and some think it’s for potential DLC content down the road. What do you think?
Square Enix: We Want a Final Fantasy Every Year
Square Enix was apparently unhappy with the development time of Final Fantasy XIII and is hoping to up their release schedule to something more along the lines of Assassin’s Creed or Call of Duty. There seem to be people on both sides of this particular post, some excited about more frequent Final Fantasy games, others concerned about the quality loss that may occur as the result of such a cramped development schedule.
So there are your most commented posts of the week. And, as is now tradition, it’s time to award one lucky reader the prestigious “Comment of the Week” award. This week’s award goes to Harv_ironlung, for his very thoughtful and poignant response to Keith Vaz: Ban Call of Duty:

Hey PlayStation gamers – you’re finally getting that thing EA said you’d get, and all it took was a class action lawsuit.
We talked previously about EA’s claim that the PlayStation 3 version of Battlefield 3 would come packed with the classic Battlefield 1943, and the subsequent failure to follow through on that promise. While there was never any official advertising regarding the bonus and it was mostly limited to Sony president Jack Tretton’s statement at E3, gamers still took it pretty seriously.
After the game failed to show up on the disc and DICE explained that PS3 owners would get “early” access to DLC instead, people sort of lost their minds.
A group of gamers filed a class-action lawsuit against the gaming giant, though their purported goal was simply to get copies of the game they were originally promised. It looks like the legal method was successful, as EA has folded and announced that they’ll make Battlefield 1943 free of charge. If you live in Europe, you can download it on the 26th. U.S. gamers have to wait until December 10, and Asian markets can access the game on December 17.
If I worked at EA, I’d be pretty pissed at Jack Tretton right now. It was his promise that ended in a lawsuit, as I can’t remember anyone from EA or DICE ever promising the free copy of Battlefield 1943.
So here’s the question of the day – is a games publisher responsible for the promises of a guy that works at another company? If Shigeru Miyamoto promises that every copy of Halo comes with a free sandwich, can we sue 343 when it doesn’t happen?
What do you think?

The service, described by Activision as a “necessity” for future games, might be dead in the water for PC gamers.
Once upon a time, there was a company called Activision. This company, led by the shrewd but effective Bobby Kotick, practically reinvented the way games are developed, turning franchise studios into the equivalent of a car assembly line. Of course, Activision is always looking for ways to innovate (or, according to some gamers, squeeze a few more bucks out of customers), and their most recent idea came in the form of Call of Duty Elite.
Elite was intended to be a way to track your stats, interact with other players, and generally broaden your Call of Duty experience. Think of it like a new version of Bungie’s old stats tracker for Halo, or a slightly different version of Battlefield 3’s Battlelog. Elite came in two forms – free and premium, with premium subscribers also landing all future DLC and a couple of other perks.
But there was one problem with CoD Elite; mainly that Beachhead (the company behind the service) couldn’t get it to work for PC systems. When Modern Warfare 3 launched last week, we were told that Elite would be delayed for PC gamers due to concerns over stats rigging. Now, it looks like CoD fans may not see the service at all.
The official Call of Duty Elite Twitter page today posted a cryptic note indicating that while they’re working hard on Elite for PCs, they can’t guarantee “if or when” it will actually come around. That’s a pretty big “if,” considering how hard Activision pushed Elite as the future of gaming. This is just more bad news for the service, which has been plagued with issues since launching on consoles.
On the plus side, if you purchased Elite, at least you still get your DLC. Elite was a big chunk of the MW3 marketing blitz, so it’s unlikely they’ll completely scrap it. But PC owners may end up with a more limited version.
What do you think of Call of Duty Elite?

DICE ups the destructive ante with this action-packed trailer for Battlefield 3’s first DLC pack.
Battlefield 3 has only been out for about a week, but DICE and EA are already pushing the game’s first downloadable content pack, Back to Karkand. The DLC contains four maps from Battlefield 2, updated and imported into the Frostbite 2 engine developed for BF3.
The DLC pack promises new weapons and new maps, but most of all it promises an increase in the destructive damage you see across the Battlefield world. Check it out here:
If you pre-ordered Battlefield 3 or managed to pick up a Limited Edition by dumb luck (like me!), the DLC is absolutely free of charge and you’ll get it automatically on release date. If you didn’t, you’ll have to ante up $14.99 or 1200 MS points for the privilege of playing on repurposed maps. The pack also offers new “persistence,” which though I’ve been playing BF3 all week I can’t quite figure out. I think it has something to do with your ribbons?
Anyway, $15 for four maps seems pretty steep – weren’t we just furious about a similar price point for five MW2 maps? I guess this is the new future of downloadable content.
Are you going to purchase Back to Karkand? It drops sometime in December.

Exclusive PlayStation 3 content promised at Sony’s E3 media briefing seems to have vanished into the wind, all for the sake of early DLC access.
If you were paying close attention to Jack Tretton (head of SCEA) when he took the stage at E3 this year, you may remember him talking about some pretty cool PlayStation 3 exclusives. One such exclusive, according to Jack, was the inclusion of DICE’s classic shooter, Battlefield 1943 on every Blu-Ray copy of Battlefield 3.
Essentially, PS3 owners were told that when they bought Battlefield 3, they’d be getting an entire second game for free. It makes sense for the title to be a PS3 exclusive; Battlefield 3 barely fits on two Xbox 360 discs and there probably isn’t much room to cram an entire other game in there. However, astute players that picked up BF3 yesterday noticed that Battlefield 1943 doesn’t seem to be on their disc, and took to Twitter and support forums to figure out exactly what happened.
If you’re one of the many PS3 owners trying to sort out where your Battlefield 1943 went, you can stop looking – it’s not on the disc. DICE worked out a different deal with Sony, trading the inclusion of the game for early DLC access for PS3 owners.
Here’s an official tweet from DICE that sums it up:
“In lieu of 1943 being available on disk for PS3 customers, EA has made all BF3 expansions available early to PS3 customers.”
I’m not really sure if this is an equitable bonus – as an Xbox 360 owner I didn’t really feel like I got much value in being allowed to give Activision more money for CoD expansions before PS3 owners had the same opportunity. If I did own a PS3, and was excited to see 1943 on my disc, I doubt that getting BF3 DLC one week early would really make up for the loss.
What about you, PS3 owners? Should Sony live up to its original announcement or does this whole thing fall in the “do not care” category? Also, sorry if you’re experiencing Battlefield overkill; the rush is almost over! If you’re not, I’ll see you playing online!

Competing pre-order bonuses and insane media hype have changed the gaming world forever, creating an entire collection of games immune from criticism.
I was talking to a friend the other night about some of the upcoming titles this holiday season, and he pointed out something that I hadn’t yet considered regarding the motivation for competitive pre-order bonuses. While I originally thought that the different bonuses were offered by different retailers in order to sway gamers from one location to the other, my friend noted that from the developer/publisher point of view, it doesn’t really matter where you buy your game.
Take Arkham City, for example: GameStop had challenge maps, Best Buy had Robin DLC, Amazon had a digital-only collector’s book and Toys R Us had an action figure. No matter where you ended up buying the game, Rocksteady still ended up with some of your money. As gamers interested in the title, our role has been switched from finding good games to buy to finding the best pre-order value. At some point, we stopped waiting to see what the industry or critics would say about a game and started buying on faith, usually based on previous experiences.
This pre-order mania has created games that are, in essence, review-proof. If you pre-ordered Skyrim, Battlefield 3, Skyward Sword, Modern Warfare 3, Uncharted 3 and Arkham City (all sequels!), then it’s not really going to matter what anyone in the gaming press has to say about the title. Your money is already spent, and you’re already invested in the experience. When several retailers offer competing pre-order deals, it only helps the game publisher cement its separation from the review process – after all, if you want that exclusive content, you’ll have to buy the game long before you can read a comprehensive review.
Of course, it’s worth noting that when all the big titles are sequels, gamers have a generally good idea of what to expect. We’re also lavished with demos and betas, so perhaps the review process has simply shifted to the perception and experiences of gamers rather than the select few people that receive advance review copies.
What do you think? Are pre-order bonuses helping to protect games from critical reviews? Is it fair that some locations have exclusive content that other gamers won’t be able to access?

The common practice with DLC is for developers to push additional content for the multiplayer mode. With Battlefiled 3, however, could it ever be possible for us to get DLC for the single-player?
According to the guys at EA DICE, it's not all too impossible. At the recently concluded Tokyo Game Show, AusGamers managed to corner some of the company execs to ask about this particular matter. Said Gustav Enekull, "We're not ruling out any possibilities, but at this point we've only announced the Back o Karkand expansion pack, coming out later this year."
"What I can say," he furthered, "is that we want our DLC -- no matter how it's set -- to be a new experience for the player. And that, in theory, could just be an extension of the co-op for example. But it's important to us that it's not just a new map pack; it's a new themed-setting; it brings you something that's more than maps.
Vehicles, weapons, new ways of playing; expanding the experience and giving players something fresh and new. That's how we're thinking and that's what we've done with the first planned expansion which is back to Karkand."
A single-player DLC for Battlefield 3 should definitely be a breath of fresh air. Multiplayer is always fun, but of course, there are some who would prefer to ride it out alone, lonely ranger style. Still, while EA DICE isn't totally scratching it out from their ideas list, they've yet to fully commit to it, so we'll just have to wait and see how this pans out.
Meanwhile, you've got the Achievements to keep you busy. Just make sure you're on the official servers, else you'll risk getting banned.

DICE has always been open and honest about the PC being the best platform for Battlefield 3. That is not to say, however, that the console versions will be of a lesser quality.
Producer Patrick Liu stresses this fact in a recent interview, guaranteeing PS3 and Xbox 360 owners awaiting for the release of their much-awaited FPS that they definitely won't be getting less from the game at all.
Said Liu in Edge's latest issue, "It has the same amount of destruction and the same amount of visual fidelity. It's also a misconception I've seen on the internet that the console version won't have jets - that's not true.
We've scaled the maps accordingly for console so it makes the pacing all right and the balancing is good. If you play a big Conquest map then the map is balanced accordingly.
If it's any consolation, if you can call it that, PS3 players have been promised that the DLC to the game will arrive one week early for their end over the others. As for the PC spec requirements of the game, you might want to check out this link here.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is going so modern that even the updates of its assets are going to be automatically made.
This was confirmed by Robert Bowling of Infinity Ward, saying "So now we're advancing content and releasing new maps on multiplayer, we can also further tweak them to also be playale in Spec Ops, and then looka thow we can update the game further in other ways like new modes, weapons - whatever we wanna do."
He furthered, "So we've done a lot of work on the back end that allows us to update more easily and quickly, and that's helpful for DLC but it's also helpful for post-launch support: listening to feedback. Maybe there's stuff we want to rebalance. Maybe there's stuff we wanna patch. We have a lot more control in tweaking the game now, outside of a patch, than we ever did before.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is in tight competition with EA DICE's Battlefield 3, and is set to come out on November 8th of this year. The Hardened Edition is also up now for pre-order, so you might want to check that out too. Whatever you decide to get, though, the devs are promising to provide "intense moments" and the "deepest experience" with Modern Warfare 3.

The treats from Battlefield 3 just keep coming. Amazon adds up some more exclusive treats for the excited fan with a new DLC pack.
The "Specact Kit DLC" lets you "expand your customization options with this set of eight unique multiplayer skins which include extra camouflage for each class on either side."
Sounds good, right? Of course it is. Anyway, if you want to get this for certain, then you'll have to place your pre-order with Amazon. At this point, that should be your best bet as EA DICE has not announced yet if they will be releasing this to the rest of the gaming public later down the road.
Battlefield 3 is set to launch on October 28th for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. Pre-orders are selling like hotcakes, needless to say, with retailer GameStop confirming that it's so far edging out Modern Warfare 3.
