An Easter Egg discovered on Back to Karkand’s Wake Island hints at a sequel to DICE’s futuristic shooter.
Battlefield 3’s Wake Island is buried in Easter Eggs. First, users find dinosaurs hidden all over the place (likely a tongue-in-cheek reference to fans wishing for a BF3/Jurassic Park mash-up), and now one intrepid gamer has discovered another, more telling Easter Egg, in the form of “2143” painted on a tank.
Check it out:
Now, this could be mere set dressing, or it could be in place to stir up the rumor mill, but either way it brings questions to light – primarily, is DICE working on a sequel to Battlefield 2142? After all, almost nothing you find in a video game environment is there by accident, so the developers definitely went out of their way to print the numbers where they are. Then again, it could just be an elaborate troll on the part of developers known for having a little fun with their user base.
There’s really no way to tell what’s going on, and DICE has been silent on the issue. Basically, this is just one for the rumor mill until we hear otherwise. Or, we could just use our brains. Why wouldn’t DICE make a sequel to one of its most popular games? It’s not like they’re going to drop Battlefield 4 next year, right?
Right?

The days of three-point something something have come and gone – it’s time for the fours.
It seems like we just got a PS3 firmware update, but time flies in the world of games. As of today, you and your fellow PS3 owners can pick up the latest and greatest version of the PS3’s firmware, titled v.4.00. It’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally here – assuming firmware is a thing you eagerly anticipate and not a thing that renders your PS3 useless.
The PlayStation blog offers a few details on what you can expect from this new and improved firmware. Vita compatibility has been included, allowing you to share content from the device to your PS3. Here’s one cool thing: if you have a PlayStation Plus membership, you’ll be able to disable or enable automatic updates for patches, system software and trophy information syncs. Pretty handy, eh?
There are a number of other things being added, including privacy features, cinema conversion for Blu-ray and a couple of localized language options. All in all, this seems like a pretty straightforward software update without too many bells and whistles.
There’s no word on whether the new firmware breaks any of the existing (or leaked) hacks for the 3.73 firmware, so it’s probably a roll of the dice for those of you with modded consoles.
Let us know if you spot anything.

One of the biggest shooter franchises in the world gives a subtle shout-out to another blockbuster franchise.
It’s been about a year since the release of 2010’s Medal of Honor, and fans of the franchise have been patiently waiting for some sort of official update on the newest iteration of the franchise. It’s no secret that a new game is in development, but up until now, details have been relatively limited, with no clear move from developers to announce or showcase anything that may be in the works.
If you happen to pick up a copy of Battlefield 3 tomorrow, you may be able to get a sneak peak at the newest entry in the Medal of Honor series, tentatively titled Medal of Honor 2. The online pass printout included with Battlefield 3 has the Medal of Honor logo emblazoned on the back, complete with the official website. EA can’t release a Battlefield game every year, so they’ll need something up their sleeves when the next Call of Duty game comes out this time next year.
I’m guessing Medal of Honor is the best they can do, but based on what happened the last time around, it’s nowhere near as big of a deal as a new Battlefield. This link to the site is one of the more interesting puzzles of the day, as the Medal of Honor website doesn’t actually have any information regarding Medal of Honor 2 and still seems to be set up the way it was a year ago, so perhaps EA is waiting until the official launch of BF3 to update the site.
We’ll keep you posted as details roll in or if there’s any major update to the website – it doesn’t make much sense to send players to a year-old website with no new information to offer them. I’m curious to see what development team is working on the game; I figured DICE was all locked up with BF3 content.
Can a new Medal of Honor turn the inevitable CoD follow-up into cannon fodder, or will it be too little too late?

The motion-capture scenes for Battlefield 3 are on a roll. This is the news that is making its round, thanks to the Reddit casting call notice posted by EA Dice.
The shooting seems to be taking place in Uppsala, Sweden, set for the date of May 27th. The production is said to be produced by Lo Wallmo, with director Tom Keegan taking on the project's helm.
Said the listing, they are on the lookout for "male actors with strong acting ability and credits in Film, TV and Theatre," to play the roles of the following: American Marines, Russian Special Agents and Persian/ Farsi Speakers.
Since the auditions took place in London last month, on the dates of April 11-13th, it should be safe to say that they have, more or less, chosen the actors for the part.
It should be exciting to see how this all turns out. We'll keep you posted on more.

Everyone's excited for the reboot of Twisted Metal, that much we know for sure. What not everybody knows, though, is that originally, it was supposed to be just a PSN title.
This little factoid was shared by David Jaffe with IGN a couple of weeks back at GDC. "This Twisted Metal started as a PSN game. Sony is the one that came to us and said they wanted more; they liked what they were seeing and wanted to make it into a full retail product."
Fans will definitely be thanking Sony for stepping in when they did. "We actually went from PSN-only, and then we were going to be like Warhawk and SOCOM Confrontation in terms of it was going to be a US$ 39 product that was multi-player only, and then Sony's like, 'No no, they want the stories' and Marketing's like, 'Yeah, you guys don't realize how many fans love the Twisted Metal universe, you gotta give us the stories."
Apparently, they were also glad that Sony asked for more from them. "We weren't going back to Sony begging for more money to make this bigger. They wanted it bigger and of course we wanted to do that. Sony is a very smart company; they've done their market research to see if there are enough Twisted Metal fans to merit rolling the dice.
It has a great legacy for Sony and SCEA, and I think everybody was on board."
Everyone else gets to get on board the Twisted Metal reboot train, too, when it comes out exclusively for the PS3 sometime later this year.
Fans were disappointed that they did not bring the game to the GDC, but Eat, Sleep, Play justified it by saying that they would rather have their own event for the official unveiling of the game, rather than get drowned out in a sea of other game announcements.

controllers-black-thumbSome people love finding scapegoats for society's ills. In the past, everything from books to music were blamed for the alleged degradation of young people's values. These days, video games are the favorite targets. According to author and futurist Jane McGonigal, that's just not fair. After all, she says, playing video games is the single most productive way to pass the time.
