130386_mmcfullThe Windows 8 Release Preview may be the operating system that's getting all of the attention right now but there's another that deserves it's share of fame. The newest multiMAN is expected to incorporate a new file manager called mmOS. No official release date has been posted but a changelog of the upcoming build has appeared. You know what that means.

OnLive is quickly expanding its grasp beyond the realm of gaming, this time bringing the classic Windows OS directly to your iPad.
OnLive, the streaming video game service launched just a few years ago, is aggressively expanding its market options by developing innovative and interesting technologies that aren’t necessarily gaming-centric. Their latest creation, OnLive Desktop, promises to bring full Windows functionality to an iPad near you.
According to OnLive, the OnLive Desktop program allows you to run a complete version of Windows on your iPad, including native Windows applications such as Excel, PowerPoint and Word. The app boasts multi-touch support and everything else you’d expect from an iPad app, with the added bonus of Windows flexibility.
Apparently you can even play PC games, though the iPad’s not exactly a high-performance gaming machine. That being said, the opportunity to run some of your favorite Windows applications on your iPad certainly helps expand the flexibility of the device, regardless of its sheer tech specs.
Look for OnLive Desktop on the App Store this Thursday – it’s free to download. You’ll also earn yourself 2GB of free cloud storage. A “premium” OnLive Desktop is slated for release later, with more applications and more features. That app will land at $9.99.
Would you run Windows on your iPad?

The graphics card developer touts brighter colors, comfortable glasses and a more immersive experience than ever before.
Today seems like the day of 3D news, first with the announcement of 3D support for Assassin’s Creed Revelations and now with an update from NVIDIA regarding the next iteration of their 3D Vision accessories. The company is promising a much more enjoyable experience, with a greater field of view, less eye strain, and reduced ghosting from monitors.
I’ll let NVIDIA explain what they’ve changed, straight from their press release:
"NVIDIA 3D LightBoost technology makes 3D games, movies and photos more stunning and life-like than ever before," said David Wung, senior director of product management of Open Platform Business (OPBG) Group for ASUS Computer International. "With 3D LightBoost and our new full-HD monitors, colors are richer, textures and subtle image details virtually jump off the screen, and the overall quality of the experience is something to behold. We are thrilled to be the first desktop display manufacturer to bring this new level of 3D visual quality to our customers with the ASUS VG278H."
That certainly sounds promising. Of course, it’s a press release, and press releases are designed to sound promising. What we know for sure is that the current generation of 3D technology simply isn’t that great, and it’s going to take a major innovation in image quality and comfort to push 3D from a fringe passion to a mainstream habit.
On the plus side, you can check out NVIDIA’s new 3D system for a relatively low cost, depending on how much money you prefer to invest in gaming experiments:
The 3D Vision 2 glasses kit, which includes one pair of 3D Vision 2 glasses and a wireless USB IR emitter will be available from the leading retailers/e-tailers worldwide in October for $149 (USD MSRP). It will also be available on the NVIDIA online store
Look for the new 3D Vision system to hit shelves sometime in October of this year.

The game developer struggles to keep up with an enormous wave of bug reports, graphical errors, performance issues and driver problems.
It wasn’t but a few hours after yesterday’s launch of “Rage” that reports started to trickle in about problems with the PC version of the game. Screen tearing, missing textures and a variety of other problems were reported by users of both Nvidia and AMD graphics cards, and Bethesda worked to remedy the situation by advising people to update their drivers and eventually released an updated set specifically for “Rage.”
While this seems to have solved a large number of the issues being reported, Bethesda is still working with the PC gaming populace and has posted a massive list of troubleshooting techniques for those users still experiencing problems after updating to the new drivers.
The list is pretty in-depth and I imagine will be continually updated as Bethesda targets and resolves issues as they are reported by gamers. It’s unfortunate to see such a well-reviewed game experience this much difficulty at launch, as there’s no telling how many players may have simply given up and moved on to other titles.
Unfortunately for casual PC gamers like myself, the solutions currently offered by Bethesda involve modifying settings that aren’t necessarily represented in the game’s built-in menus.
For example:
“The user can force V-sync on or off in the graphics vendor control panel. Right-click on the desktop to access the graphics vendor control panel.
If V-sync is forced on then RAGE will always V-sync.
If V-sync is forced off then RAGE will auto-detect that V-sync is not working and RAGE will instead synchronize to real-time and screen tearing may occur.
Alternatively you can force V-sync on by adding the following to the RAGE launch options in Steam:
+r_swapInterval 1”
I’m sure that paragraph means something to some PC gamers, but it looks like a bunch of gibberish to me. I guess less tech-savvy players will just need to wait until an official fix is patched into the game, which I’m sure won’t take too long considering the sheer volume of the complaints.
Are you experiencing any issues with “Rage?” How did you fix them?

ipad Google's AdMob has done a survey of people who use tablet computers. Some results are pretty surprising. Tablet computers have been around for a year now, and they're changing the way we do a lot of things. Google's AdMob surveyed 1,430 users of tablets, most of which were iPads, and came to some interesting conclusions. 84% of respondents used their tablets for gaming, making that the most popular activity, followed by searching for info (78%) and emailing (74%). The fact that so many tablet owners are using them to play games does not bode well for the makers of dedicated gaming devices. Not as popular are shopping (42%), reading e-books (46%) and consuming entertainment (51%). Given the number of options for streaming video, I'm surprised only half of tablet owners are using theirs for entertainment. I wonder if the percentage will rise over the next year, as more cable and satellite providers launch iPad apps that make it possible to watch live TV on mobile devices. The survey shows that a majority of owners use their tablets every day-68% spend at least an hour per day on the device, and 82% use them primarily at home. That last stat seems a bit surprising, since one of the selling points of the iPad and other tablets is portability. 69% of those surveyed are more likely to use their devices on weekdays rather than weekends, and 62% are more likely to use them at night. The most surprising result-and the most ominous for the makers of standard computers-is that 77% of those responding have decreased use of their laptop/desktop computer since getting a tablet, and 28% are using the tab as their primary computer. We've been hearing for months that the iPad is `cannibalizing` sales of netbooks, and if more than a quarter of tablet owners are already using the devices as their primary computer, we can see why. This percentage is bound to increase as more people buy tablets, and realize they don't really need their larger computers anymore. Maybe those Apple rivals who consider the iPad a `fad` should take a close look at this survey.
