Sony is ready for the influx of new Vita users, but may have made a costly mistake.
As of this morning, the PlayStation Store was flush with content for the newly released PS Vita. Sony dropped a metric crap-ton of new content onto the store, most of which is engineered to interact with or be played on the Vita. You’ll find new games, new apps and a few demos—plenty of content to keep you busy for your first few hours with the device.
There are three “augmented-reality” games currently available; Cliff Diving, Fireworks and Table Soccer all use the Vita’s cameras to detect player movement, which then influences gameplay. New games include Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack and Touch My Katamari. There’s also a new Twitter app, full Flickr support and Netflix, all for the PS Vita.
One curious tidbit has been raised by attentive gamers, though: some of the PS Vita demos are labeled as “PS Vita Game” instead of as demos, and are the full size of the actual game. There is speculation that Sony may have pulled another “Undead Knights” and accidentally released full games as demos, which would mean that you can currently pick up Rayman Origins, Dungeon Hunter, Hustle Kings, Little Deviants and others free of charge.
If you picked up a Vita at launch, now would be the time to check out those demos to see if Sony screwed up. Let us know how it goes in the comments.

It’s time for gaming outlets across the globe to drop their top ten lists, but we’d rather know what you think.
It seems like everyone in the world of gaming journalism is wrapping up the year with top ten lists galore – top ten games, top ten games by developer, top ten disappointments, etc. We here at QJ aren’t immune to the listing phenomenon, but rather than compile our own list (which would probably look similar to those already published), we figured we’d take the whole thing to our readers.
What we want to know is which games captured your imagination this year, which games you loved and which games you thought didn’t get enough attention from the gaming press. We’d also love to know which games you thought were the most overhyped, or the most disappointing. Feel free to drop your own list in the comments – we’ll be reading them!
Here’s a quick reminder on some of the big and notable titles of the year:
L.A. Noire
Batman: Arkham City
Portal 2
Modern Warfare 3
Bastion
Star Wars: The Old Republic
Assassin’s Creed: Revelations
Saints Row the Third
Battlefield 3
The Witcher II
Dungeon Siege 3
Dead Space 2
Gears of War 3
Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Minecraft
Super Mario 3D Land
Dark Souls
Whew – that’s a lot of games, and we’re sure we missed a few somewhere in there. So sound off and let us know – which game was the most fun, which was the most beautiful, which is the one you’ll play the longest?

Didn’t get that EA game you wanted for Christmas? Maybe you looked deep into your stocking, and Battlefield 3 was nowhere to be found? Not to worry, for Origin has you covered. Starting today, everything in the Origin store is 50% off. That goes for boxed copies of games as well as digital downloads.
Additionally, any order that totals out to more than $39.99 will land free shipping – not too shabby if you have some gift cards to burn or are looking to get rid of some of your Christmas cash. This deal is active for the U.S., Australia and Asia, with U.K. gamers reportedly getting buy one, get one half off instead.
The sale, which started at 9:00am this morning, will be in effect through December 31st. All things considered, 50% off on games like Need for Speed, Battlefield 3 and Dead Space 2 is a pretty sweet deal, assuming your wallet isn’t still smashed from the holidays.

AP has finished its list of the best games of 2011, and it’s surprisingly good.
2011 was, from any way of measuring, a massive year in the world of video games. We saw tons of excellent indie releases and more AAA chart-burners than any reasonable person could have time to play. Now that the year is winding down, it’s time for gaming publications all over the world to start compiling their annual “best of lists,” with the Associated Press leading the pack.
Despite not being a game-specific outlet, AP has put together a relatively strong listing. Taking top honors is Portal 2, but Bastion, Skyrim, Arkham City and even Rayman are represented. Here’s the full top ten:
1. Portal 2
2. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
3. Dues Ex: Human Revolution
4. Bastion
5. Batman: Arkham City
6. InFamous 2
7. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
8. Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception
9. Rayman Origins
10. Dead Space 2
Wow. I had completely forgotten Dead Space 2 was this year. Long year for games, I guess!
Do you see anything on the list you’d like to dispute? Any games missing? Sound off in the comments.

The director of one of Sony’s most beloved franchises isn’t a huge fan of where online play is headed.
Did you play Battlefield 3? Did you have a good time setting up your Origin account, logging into Battlelog, registering your online pass and joining the gun club or whatever? My guess is no. At best, it was an inconvenience, and at worst, it was a game-breaking problem. Yet online passes are quickly becoming the norm, showing up in games like Uncharted 3, Dead Space 2 and Need for Speed.
Online passes protect the industry from used game sales – if you buy a used game and the online code has already been registered, the only option is buying a new code directly from the publisher. This relatively recent development has plenty of gamers up in arms, and it looks like it’s not just gamers that think online passes are a bad idea – some developers are getting on the train as well.
David Jaffe, director of the newest installment of the Twisted Metal franchise, definitely doesn’t support the online pass model. His theory is simple: The online pass may protect first-round sales, but it’s not worth losing potential fans that don’t want to take a chance on buying the game new.
By letting gamers pick a used copy of the game up at a lower price, Jaffe figures that more people will get a chance to experience the game and become fans, which in turn translates to bigger sales next time around. Note that Jaffe isn’t against the idea of the online pass because he thinks it’s stupid or inconvenient, but because he believes it can negatively affect the franchise’s bottom line.
Jaffe also noted that the final decision is up to Sony, so there’s no real indication on whether the new Twisted Metal will have an online pass or not. Based on the company’s recent actions, I’d say the most likely answer is “yes, totally.”
What do you think of Jaffe’s arguments against online passes?

Dino Patti, head of Playdead Games, says that the current method for marketing and selling games is broken, and has been for quite some time.
Limbo was one of the bigger hits for Xbox’s Live Arcade, PC and PSN in 2010. If you played it at all, you probably still remember some of its haunting imagery – it was just that effective at creating a mood. Now the guy in charge of Limbo’s development company, Playdead Games, is offering his opinion on why direct downloads work, and why the current retail model doesn’t.
Patti’s main thrust appears to be that delivering games via disc just doesn’t make much sense in a world where most gamers can simply download whatever they want from the web. It’s a familiar argument, though Patti does have a bit more experience with digital downloads than most.
Here’s what he had to say:
“"Driving discs in a big van all over the world is really inefficient. I don't understand how anyone can make money out of this. Driving a truck to Japan just to get it delivered to people when they can get it from the net? Hopefully the new consoles will embrace the download space even more."”
Of course, it’s worth noting that Limbo is a tiny, tiny game compared to AAA titles like Skyrim or Battlefield 3. Downloading a 117 MB game is a lot different than downloading a 6 GB game, especially when you consider that here in the states, out of 307 million people, only around 67 million have access to broadband services.
Sony Computer Entertainment’s Kaz Hirai summed up this counterpoint nicely:
“"We do business in parts of the world where network infrastructure isn't as robust as one would hope. There's always going to be requirement for a business of our size and scope to have a physical medium. To think everything will be downloaded in two years, three years or even ten years from now is taking it a little bit to the extreme."
I think we’re headed towards an all-digital world, but it can’t happen until global broadband coverage improves and the cost of console hard drives goes way, way down. Hell, I still have a 20gig drive on my Xbox – just try getting me to download a game.
Which opinion do you think is more accurate for the near-future of gaming?

The brick and mortar juggernaut looks to expand its business offerings as it tries to adapt to a future in which games will increasingly be available via direct download.
Gamers have a love/hate relationship with GameStop. On the one hand, GameStop is a monstrous corporate entity that pays pennies on the dollar for trade-in games and uses harsh tactics to reap a mountain of sales that don’t really benefit developers or publishers. On the other, it’s often very convenient to drop into a GameStop, trade in a few old games and pick up something new.
But GameStop, like most retailers, faces an entire new world of online competition. The world of video games is especially fast moving, with a large number of purchases now going to direct downloads instead of brick and mortar retail chains. GameStop seems to be aware of the trend, and is adding new services in the hopes of balancing out its business model.
Starting this holiday season, GameStop will try a new program in 200 U.S. stores in which it sells tablet PC devices. The store will offer only Android tablets at first,  from manufacturers like Samsun, Acer and Asustek. They’re not straying too far from their gaming roots, packing seven free games (Dead Space!) in with each tablet and creating a special wireless controller to interact with each device.
My friend and I were actually in a GameStop last week (she was looking for some old DS game) and noticed that they’re now accepting iPad trade-ins, so maybe this is just the first step in an entirely new business model. If they want to keep their profits high, they have to find revenue other than software.
Of course, this also brings them one step closer to their pawnshop reputation, but we’ll just have to see how it plays out.
Would you buy a tablet at GameStop, or have your experiences with the company soured you to the brand?

A new update has been rolled out by Deep Silver on Steam for Dead Island PC.

The update, otehrwise known as 1.2.1, brings in fixes for the launch issues that came along with the previously released patch. Apart from this, however, the devs have yet to release an official changelog.
It's going to be available as an automatic download, so be sure you have some 79MB free space on your harddrive before you log in to your Steam client the next time around.
Another thing to look forward to is the Bloodbath Arena DLC, which has now been given a new release window for November, to give the devs more time to fix up whatever it is that needs fixing. We'll keep you posted on more details on that as they come.

While not all Hollywood adaptation of video games work, that doesn't mean there's nothing to be learned from the Hollywood in terms of developing a game.

Starhawk developers Lightbox Interactive is picking up on this very theory, aiming for a more cinematic approach with their latest title.
Said Dylan Jobe, they're trying to make it more engaging in terms of story, more than Warhawk ever was. The discussion about this very thing went on in a panel at the convention Fantastic Arcade, in Austin Texas, which included filmmakers and game developers alike.
Jobe explained thus, "With Warhawk, the mechanics were crazy fun but the universe was just hollow. A good story and a hero makes the whole thing more compelling, and we brought in talent from the film industry to work on the univrse of Starhawk before we even began to think who the characters would be.
Writing is something video games still need to improve on. There's a lot of really bad writing in video games and also in the way that the story is integrated."
Film director Nacho Vigalondo then chimes in at the panel, and goes on to express his disappointment at how some games, while they do have good gameplay potential, lacks the push of a good story. "I feel frustrated when I play a game like Dead Space that has great mechanics, but a lack of ambition in the story. If it was a movie, with its plot it would be a B-movie, not a big-budget film."
So going back to Starhawk and its goal of making it more cinematic, "We pulled an entire mission out to be part of the cinematic story moments. It actually worked to make the game flow better and more naturally push the player into the next mission; it wasn't that we're trying to make a film or remove the player's control, but it's important to understand how story moments can benefit your game."
It shouldn't be all too bad for game developers to want to hone in on the cinematic aspect of the videogame, after all, it's very much a visual medium inasmuch as it's about strategy and skills. As long as the balance between gameplay and visuals are there, then it shouldn't be problem.
Fans in attendance at the Comic-Con were in for a treat as they got to have a hands-on session with the game. Their testimonials, of course, were put on video for all to see.
