A lot of people are claiming that PC gaming is dead, and yet we continue to see game after game having successful launches for it. Electronic Arts president Frank Gibeau happens to be one of those people shrugging off this claim about PC's death.
In fact, they're finding it so healthy that in their quest to expand their customer base, they're revisiting their roots and renewing their focus on the PC paltform.
"The user base is gigantic," he said of the PC market. "PC retail may be a big problem, but PC downloads are awesome... The margins are much better and we don't have any rules in terms of first party approvals," he told Gamasutra.
"From our perspective, it's an extremely healthy platform. It's totally conceivable it will become our bigggest platform."
The company is also looking at the freemium business model on the PC, as exemplified by China. "If you look at the way people play in Asia, PC is the model. I think that free to play model is coming to the west in a big way."
All in all, Frank Gibeau is in high spirits about where Electronic Arts is as a publisher in the industry nowadays. "I feel really good about where we are at EA these days. There's a  lot of transition going on in this industry and we're on the offensive. We're moving from a fire-and-forget packaged goods model to an online services model.
EA has been very active on the PC front the past year, with its Playfish division becoming the second largest Facebook games developer. They also branched out to the iPhone, publishing Rovio Games' successful hit Angry Birds and Tetris.
"What we're finding is our customers are consuming our IPs across multiple devices. Whave we've been orienting our company towards is creating IP universes that can exist across platforms."

eaElectronic Arts president Frank Gibeau happens to be one of those people shrugging off this claim about PC's death; here's why.

Battlefield 3 is not the only game that Electronic Arts is busying themselves with. There's also Dead Space 3 to think about, especially given the success of Dead Space 2.
According to EA Games President Frank Gibeau, not because Dead Space 2 was well-received by the fans, it should mean that they've already done what they could with the franchise. He then cites Capcom's efforts with Resident Evil, bringing it closer to the market with every installment they release for it.
"The Resident Evil series was awesome, the early versions were phenomenal. [Capcom] did a good job of growing the franchise to a very large market. I think we still have some areas to grow with Dead Space in terms of trying to reach a broader audience without losing the quality and that survival-horror mechanic. That's how we're going to think about it as we think about Dead Space 3 and what we do next with the IP."
As for the direction they'd like to head on to next, "Overall, we want to try and grow the business in the action category," he said. "EA doesn't reallly have a very strong stake there; survival-horror kind of lives in that genre. 3rd-person action is something that we think we can build and our Visceral Games team is really working hard at crafting some new IPs as well as building out ones that have succeeded.
Horror movies are great films; it's a genre that's been around for decades. We think the same holds true for interactive."

dead-space-2-thumb

With the success of Dead Space 2 giving EA that much-needed encouragement, they're moving on ahead with Dead Space 3 -- but what to do with it?

Since the Xperia Play -- or PS Phone, if you want -- is one of Sony Ericsson's main weapons in their bid for a bigger slice of the smartphone market, comparisons with Apple's iPhone are inevitable. As Sony Ericsson sees it, one major positive point for the Xperia Play, however, is that using it is "much cooler than using an iPhone."

Others just refuse to die. Visceral Games wanted none of that for Isaac Clarke. In fact, in developing the character, they were shooting for one that was both believeable and compelling.

More details come rolling in for Sony's newly-announced PS Phone, Xperia Play. This time around, we receive news on how many games you can expect for it at launch. And when will this launch be.
According to Sony's recent press conferene, there should be about 50 games at your disposal when the smart phone debuts to the market. They also dropped some big game names, which, they say, are sure to come to the platform, although not necessarily at launch.
Some of these games were Assassin's Creed, Dead Space, the now-defunct Guitar Hero, and Battlefield. All games that are headed the way of Xperia Play have been reassured by Sony to be "optimized" for the mobile phone/ handheld.
Sony also shares that they are currently working with 20 publishers in all. We expect more to join their team once Xperia Play gets rolling.
Other revelations made were about the PlayStation Suite program, which, as reported, will allow for backward compatibility with PSOne and "PlayStation quality" games made for Xperia Play.
We still have yet to find out exactly how much the Xperia Play or the PS Phone will cost, nor do we have an exact date to mark on our calendars for its release date.
Sony did express, however, that the device will be hitting the market come March. No word yet, too, if it's going to be a simultaneous launch worldwide, or if they're going to do it by regions.
We'll be keeping you up to speed on more news about the PS Phone and the PSP2.
