Are tiny in-game payments the way of the future?
If you’ve never heard the word “microtransaction,” here’s a quick primer: a microtransaction is a purchase made in a video game, with real-life money, for some sort of in-game function or item. This purchase is almost always very low in initial cost, hence the “micro” part of the word. The idea is simple—players spend tiny bits of money at a time, but all of that money adds up.
Several games have used the microtransaction model to great success. In fact, it’s one of the primary ways in which most free-to-play MMORPG and mobile games stay afloat. It would seem that players, as a rule, aren’t opposed to investing a small chunk of change if it makes their game easier or more enjoyable.
With microtransaction popularity skyrocketing, it’s inevitable that we’ll see more games offering in-game purchases. And it’s not unfathomable to imagine a world in which Activision sells weapons for Modern Warfare at $1 each, or where Blizzard offers “Premium” services for their next MMO. Whatever the game, microtransactions are going to be a permanent part of any game publisher’s revenue models.
So how do you feel about microtransactions? Are they a good way to recoup costs on a game and keep the initial cost to players down, or are they a manipulative method for tricking players into pumping cash into a game long after they should?
Sound off!

2K Games is sick of your people being godless heathens.
Civilization V stripped a number of elements from previous Civilization titles, resulting in an experience that was more streamlined and a little less intimidating for new players. While the result was no doubt a more accessible Civilization V, some hardcore players felt that Civ V offered less in the way of depth than its predecessors. 2K Games is looking to change that perception with the just-announced Gods and Kings expansion.
The days of orgies and vomitoriums are coming to a close, as religion is about to bounce its way back into the lives of your people. The Gods and Kings expansion brings promises of the afterlife and a few other familiar mechanics to your digital settlements.
Here’s a quick look at what you can expect to see when the expansion launches in spring:
13 new buildings
9 new wonders
27 new units
New tech
9 new civilizations
3 new scenarios
Religion returns
Smarter AI
Enhanced diplomacy
Espionage returns
New city-state types, Mercantile and Religious
Overall, it’s a pretty massive expansion (as is the norm for Civilization). The addition of religion and espionage will dramatically change the way in which conflicts and friendships unfold.
Now, to get started on my army of godless chariot archers. And godless trebuchets. Actually, just assume everything in my army is godless.

The retail analysis company adds Wal-Mart’s data to its information coffers, which will help it to provide more accurate sales reports.
Have you ever heard of the NPD Group? If not, here’s a quick primer: The NPD Group is an analysis company that interprets data from over 900 different retailers and uses that information to create reports outlining the sales of games. With over 150,000 locations reporting in, the NPD Group usually has a pretty good idea of what people are buying.
With one huge exception – until now, the NPD Group did not analyze sales information from the megastore, Wal-Mart. And as much as hardcore gamers would like to say otherwise, Wal-Mart makes up a huge portion of the retail games market – 25-30 percent, in fact. With Wal-Mart’s data on tap, the NPD Group can now capture an estimated 80 percent of all domestic game sales, and thus provide much more accurate sale information.
Here’s why I think this is so interesting – Wal-Mart game sales are notorious for leaning towards the casual side of gaming. People that aren’t “gamers” don’t go to game stores; they go to Wal-Mart or another huge megastore. And the information provided by Wal-Mart could just show some unexpected trends in the industry.
We’ll have to wait for the next NPD report to see if Wal-Mart’s numbers present any surprises, but at the very minimum, the analyses can be relied upon to be more accurate than ever.
Where do you buy your games? I’m fond of Target myself; no one tries to get me to subscribe to magazines there.

Another developer goes on the record against the controversial bill, this time by taking their game offline.
SOPA resistance continues to mount across the gaming world, with more and more developers willing to take an official stance against the bill. Red 5 Studios, however, is going above and beyond the traditional press release and is instead shutting down the official Firefall beta servers on January 18.
The shutdown corresponds to other internet blackout events scheduled to protest SOPA – sites like Destructoid and Reddit will also be offline for the duration of the day. CEO Mark Kern noted that Firefall would remain offline for 24 hours, and that Red 5 is “ashamed” of the ESA for supporting such obviously damaging legislation.
He also stated that Red 5 would not be attending E3 unless the ESA is willing to reverse its stance on SOPA. The odds of that are pretty low, but it’s still nice to see a developer willing to speak its mind and take a firm stance. Kern believes that SOPA will not only be harmful to individual gamers, but to small development studios without the financial resources to defend themselves against “unwarranted shutdowns.”

All Aboard - Train Conductor 2: USA review
Voxel Agents new game has just hit the Android market and you better get on track.
I recently got an Android phone - my first smartphone - and whilst I was glad to have a navigational tool and have something to help me on my way, I was also looking forward to playing some of the games I'd constantly heard about. The games for the android aren't really dissimilar from those on the iPhone, but hey, I have an Android and I'm loving it, so why not check out a few games?
However, I was stumped from the get go, most of them I had heard in passing or were on the iTunes store, so I was drawing a blank. I eventually heard someone mention a new game called Train Conductor 2, a game by Australian Developers Voxel Agents. I was a bit hesitant at first, I mean how much fun can conducting trains really be.
The game is in the vein of games such as Flight Control, not just for it's transportation aspect, but also it's game mechanics of moving your desired mode of concern to where it's meant to be. I was going to get Flight Control, but I remembered that I'd purchased it off Steam some time ago and think that was enough. Flight Control is a bit repetitive and the music - while catchy - can be a bit repetitive. Train Conductor 2, never has that problem.
I often praise games with great sound and music, but I always feel like some games just capture the spirit of where it's set or where they're coming from when it comes to the sound design and music, TC2 definitely has that . The game takes place in the greatest country in the world: America - if you didn't get that from the title. You play a train conductor in Miami, initially and you have the cool sounds of a breeze and the gulls then a nice bit of funk begins to play as you're told by a red-headed girl that you will need to make sure these trains get to where they're going.
It's as simple as that, four tracks, several trains, no time limit and  you have to make sure they don't crash into one another. The game is quite leanient with close calls with the game which add to the excitement, but if your trains are going to crash, they will crash. The game relies on fast reflexes and strategy, as you see one track light up, you may have to stop another train in it's tracks on number 4, just so you can slide the next one in from number 2, but wait, there's another one coming from number 1, what do you do then?
The game's difficult curve is mixed with over 7 different levels, as each level is barely similar to the last. The Miami level focuses on you making sure you can just maneouvre your trains from one track to the next, but once it becomes dark, the night takes over the game. Ghosts and Aliens roam the American countryside messing with your trains. These are my favourite levels as they aren't restricted to the game's toughest mechanic of crossing trains while making a move. The ghosts and demon trains will simply float through one another and it is magnficent during the challenge maps to see ten of them flow perfectly to where they're going in just a matter of seconds.
The game looks fantastic and has 3-D trains on a fairly 2-D background, but there's always something going on. During the Miami level, a shark swims under the bridged tracks, during the Roswell level, you'll see agents come and go and during the New York level, the underground can be quite lively. The game really situates itself with it's location and even though it kind of uses stereotypes, it never really detracts from the game. It's a bit like if they sat down with a big whiteboard and started with a bunch of levels and then just listed everything they could about those cities. Oh and finally, the character design of the girl is incredibly well-done and cute even. But during the Seattle level, she seems to have a minor crazy streak when you run over a yeti, saying  I don't know what that was "but I liked crushing it."
In fact, I tried doing the tutorial later on to show someone she said that and she followed it up with "I feel like a sandwich," despite the lack of voices I feel like they have her character, if a bit mentally skewed, down to a T. Oh and there's also some evil guy during the ghost levels, but I think he just runs an old amusement park and is getting away with it, due to a lack of meddling kids.
The game looks like a triple-A title from the guys at Rovio or Half-Brick but it's just an indie studio here in Australia. The game's design and music is never boring or ever a problem, and levelling up to the next map is never a chore as it accumulate's how many trains you've conducted over the entire game. The levels do get a little bit out there at times with the paranormal levels such as the Seattle level where yeti-like creatures hide in the snow and block your path. I was half expecting Bigfoot to slowly come in Frogger style and cause havoc with the tracks and then you'd have to fix them.
The game has some strong leaderboards, even with a few thousand downloads and I cannot reccommend this any more than I have above. I know I'm usually meant to critique these games harshly but I feel like this is one of those games that just knows everything about what it's doing. The only criticism I have is that I wish there were more levels and that there were a Free trial version for iPhone users. I think the game is almost perfect, even for just a mobile game, I could imagine it being a great little XBLA or Steam game that you could smack on for a few minutes and enjoy yourself.

Valve drops a ton of new in-game items and a brand new map to celebrate its Australian Christmas event.
Love hats? You’re in luck, for Valve has officially dropped its latest Team Fortress 2 update, titled Australian Christmas. The update is packed to the gills with completely unnecessary items for your TF2 character, including more hats than one person could possibly need. Still, it’s fun to see Valve treating their game with so much love.
There’s a lot going on in this update, so you should check out the full list of changes if you’re interested. If you don’t have time, here’s a quick rundown on what you can expect:
New map –Foundry
New weapons
New hats and items from the Steam Workshop
All-new achievements
75% off certain items in the Mann Supply Co. Store
If you want to get in on the festivities, you’ll need to play Team Fortress 2 while the event is live. Some of the items can only be looted through “Nice” crates, which in turn only spawn while the event is active. So get on it – it’s not like you have any other games to play right now, right?

Take 2 Boss Criticizes Yearly Schedule Releases
With games like Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty being released every year, who has time for quality.
Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick is a force to be reckoned with. A man who has helped push some of the most innovative and creatively awesome titles to the finish line over the years, but over those years has been time...effort...killing hookers, so when Zelnick says that the current model of yearly releases isn't sustainable, he knows what he's talking about.
Big budget Triple-A titles need time and effort put upon them, not just a new coat of paint, a first-draft script and some geographically confused accents. Zelnick was a speaker at the UBS Media and Communications conference and whilst Zelnick didn't specificially name any franchises he had however, just finished discussing Activision's stance in the market place.
Zelnick said that if "you start trying to stamp these products out annually, we don't think that's consistent with a high-quality result", essentially the current Call of Duty model, even with a subscription service, is not sustainable. Zelnick added that if you give consmers something every year like clockwork, they will eventually grow tired of it.
Whilst I would agree with Zelnick, MW3 did pull in over half a billion dollars in sales last month and I tend not to argue with creative figures that I will never ever ever ever ever ever see in my lifetime.
Figures have been coming out about how GameStop and a few other retailers have sold over half a million Premium Subscriptions to Call of Duty's subscription service, Elite and have continued to grow as such. Zelnick queried the viability of such a subscription service, saying he could't tell whether it was relevant yet. "I'm kind of skeptical, frankly. I suspect that we want a different experience on our big screen than we do on our middle-sized screen than we do on our mobile screen, because I think we use them at different times and they mean different things. I do think an intellectual property can thread through, but only if it is really high quality."
That being said users who signed up for Elite crashed the servers twice in the first week of release due to it's popularity and the unbelivable amount of support that Activision had not prepared for. Jamie Berger of Activision has acttually said that "right now, it's an option", when talking about Elite, but he also adds that it might not be in "3-5 years."
So both Activision and Zelnick are not thinking about keeping a community running in the long term; they should team up on something.

The legendary game creator announces his desire to change roles at Nintendo, but Nintendo vehemently denies that he’ll be swapping posts.
Last night, the internet exploded with news that Shigeru Miyamoto was retiring from his current position at Nintendo. While not leaving the company or the games industry, Miyamoto stated that he wanted to leave the huge franchises like Zelda and Mario to teams of younger developers so that he could go on to work on smaller projects with shorter development times. He even mentioned his love for the guy that created the Rubik’s cube.
The news was interesting, to be sure – Miyamoto clearly wants to work closer to the cutting edge of development, rather than as the guy who steers multi-billion dollar franchises. But I’m guessing Nintendo’s shareholders weren’t too happy with the information, because the company has issued a stern denial:
"This is absolutely not true.  There seems to have been a misunderstanding. He has said all along that he wants to train the younger generation.
"He has no intention of stepping down. Please do not be concerned."
Nintendo is clearly trying to calm investor fears that the man responsible for most of the company’s success would be stepping into a position with less responsibility, despite the fact that the original interview seemed pretty clear about Miyamoto’s intent.
There’s obviously a small chance this whole thing is a translation error, but the odds of that are miniscule. More likely, Miyamoto has been planning this type of move for years and perhaps announced it before Nintendo had time to do the proper legwork with investors.
We’ll just have to see how the story plays out. In the meantime, what would you think of a Zelda or Mario project without Miyamoto’s oversight?

Microsoft’s slick new Xbox dashboard has an official release date, and it’s very, very soon.
The original Xbox 360 dashboard left a lot to be desired, but it had a certain charm. Over the years, Microsoft has tuned and re-tuned the dashboard to make it easier to use and, more importantly, easier to sell you things like movies, apps and downloadable content.
The latest version of the dashboard, now titled “Metro,” is scheduled for launch December 6th and brings with it a whole slew of new features and options.
The dashboard boasts full Kinect support, Bing voice search, Beacon-marking, sharing of achievements to Facebook and plenty of other new features. Additionally, expect to see the early versions of Xbox TV or whatever they’re calling it, with a variety of service providers bringing their programming directly to the dashboard (for a small fee, of course). Microsoft updates the providers based on contractual obligations and regions, so look around for specific info regarding what you’ll actually be able to access.
One major point in the update notes: the addition of cloud saving for all Xbox Live Gold members. The benefit here is that you can back up your game saves to the Microsoft cloud, allowing you to share them across consoles – a much-needed feature, especially as our poor little HDDs get filled up.
What do you think about the new features coming to the dashboard? Is there anyone out there that’s been playing with the beta and has a few comments regarding its functionality?

The PS3’s streaming music app gets a little much-needed love in the form of a small software update.
If you have a computer (which you must), then you’re probably aware of the existence of sites like Pandora and Last.fm. These streaming music sites allow you to choose a particular taste of music and listen to artists that fall within those parameters. It’s great for hitting the gym, or getting a bit of work done during the day.
Sony has its own version of this streaming music software, called Music Unlimited. It’s sort of under the radar, but a recent PS3 software update is aimed at bringing it up to speed with its much larger competitors.
If you use Music Unlimited, or want to try it out, here’s what you’ll find in the new, updated version:
• My Channels – Allows you to build radio stations around an artist
• Dislike Button – Allows you to flag music you don’t enjoy
• Playlist creation on the fly
Of course, Sony has retained the membership fees, with a basic packaged running $3.99 per month. If you want unlimited playback, you’ll have to upgrade to the premium package for $9.99 per month.
Speaking as someone that’s never run over my free Pandora hours, I can’t imagine paying for streaming music. But, then again, I’m sure there are folks that burn up their music streams much more quickly than I.
So, what do you think of the Music Unlimited updates?

Because if there’s one thing the industry needs right now, it’s another high-profile FPS game.
Rumors of a new Rainbow 6 game have been swirling around for months, but there wasn’t too much concrete evidence to grab onto. It was generally understood that a sequel would have to come eventually, but no one really knew when.
The last game in the series, Rainbow Six: Vegas 2, was released in 2008 and things have been pretty quiet on Ubisoft’s end ever sense. Until today, of course, when Ubisoft officially confirmed that a new game, Rainbow Six: Patriots, is headed your way in 2013.
The game revolves around the Rainbow team’s efforts to stop a group of terrorists called the True Patriots, who in typical Tom Clancy style have determined that the government is corrupt and no longer serves the best interests of the people. You’ll play as different characters throughout the campaign and the game will feature a robust co-op mode.
David Sears, creative director for the game, had this to say in an interview with OXM (hits shelves later this month):
"Terrorism has evolved, and so has Rainbow 6. In Tom Clancy's Rainbow 6 Patriots, all the team play, tactics, and realism that fans of the series love have been coupled with an exciting new narrative direction. This adds an unprecedented level of humanity that will make Tom Clancy's Rainbow 6 Patriots an extremely tense and immersive experience."
There aren’t many details besides what’s been revealed in the brief interview snippet, so you’ll have to wait until the issue hits shelves November 30th if you want the full scoop. For now, just know that a new Rainbow Six is coming, and you can expect it in 2013.
Are you a Rainbow Six fan? Or are you suffering from shooter overload?
