Sony leaves players in the dark for 14 hours, starting tomorrow.
Sony has just announced that its online gaming service, PlayStation Network, will be pulled offline for roughly 14 hours tomorrow. The company confirmed this through the PlayStation Blog, where it wrote that PSN would be coming down for “significant maintenance.”
PSN will be down from 8:00am PST to 10pm PST—beyond that, there isn’t much information on what exactly Sony is updating or performing maintenance on. The company has yet to respond to press inquiries on the subject, but we’ll keep you posted as details roll out.
Sony will force log-out anyone on PSN tomorrow; no PSN users will be able to log in until maintenance is complete. The PlayStation Store and PlayStation Home will be inaccessible as well. Players will be unable to play online games or access their PSN accounts. Big bummer for anyone that just picked up SSX.
Speculation on the downtime ranges from Vita-related updates to the PSN/SEN transfer, but we’ll just have to wait and see.
What are you going to do with your downtime hours?

2K Games is sick of your people being godless heathens.
Civilization V stripped a number of elements from previous Civilization titles, resulting in an experience that was more streamlined and a little less intimidating for new players. While the result was no doubt a more accessible Civilization V, some hardcore players felt that Civ V offered less in the way of depth than its predecessors. 2K Games is looking to change that perception with the just-announced Gods and Kings expansion.
The days of orgies and vomitoriums are coming to a close, as religion is about to bounce its way back into the lives of your people. The Gods and Kings expansion brings promises of the afterlife and a few other familiar mechanics to your digital settlements.
Here’s a quick look at what you can expect to see when the expansion launches in spring:
13 new buildings
9 new wonders
27 new units
New tech
9 new civilizations
3 new scenarios
Religion returns
Smarter AI
Enhanced diplomacy
Espionage returns
New city-state types, Mercantile and Religious
Overall, it’s a pretty massive expansion (as is the norm for Civilization). The addition of religion and espionage will dramatically change the way in which conflicts and friendships unfold.
Now, to get started on my army of godless chariot archers. And godless trebuchets. Actually, just assume everything in my army is godless.

Bethesda releases full patch notes for their latest Skyrim update, now in the certification testing.
It seems like it’s been forever since the launch of Skyrim, but millions of gamers are still spending their free time slaying dragons and “accidentally” murdering their followers. And, as is customary with Bethesda games, Skyrim still has a fair few issues interfering with players’ ability to fully enjoy the game.
The company is more than aware of Skyrim’s issues and has been working non-stop to get them fixed –especially the ever-present PS3 bug that makes the game nearly unplayable for some users. I’ll skip the analysis and go straight to the patch notes. If you’re a Skyrim fan, you’ll want to read through these:

Bethesda is promising to resolve some of Skyrim’s many issues in a patch due next week.
Skyrim has experience great success, but as we’ve stated previously there are a fair number of glitches and bugs floating around in its massive world. I experienced one myself yesterday that resulted in a quest being uncompletable (thankfully fixed after a save and load). People have been clamoring for a fix to the bugs, and VP of Marketing Pete Hines has been getting berated via Twitter for the better part of a week and a half.
Good news for Pete Hines and Skyrim fans everywhere: the game’s first big patch is probably coming next week.
Updating via his Twitter account, Pete Hines confirmed that the latest patch for Skyrim has been submitted  for PS3 and Xbox 360 certification, and there’s a PC patch in the works. He goes on to state that Bethesda is expecting to see the patch land sometime next week – we’ll just have to see if that actually happens.
Some of the issues expected to be fixed include:
Xbox 360’s texture-streaming issue
PS3’s frame rate problem
PC’s random freezes
Certification is a notoriously shifty process, so while Bethesda expects the patches to go live, don’t be surprised if they are delayed by one service or the other. Bugs are a common fixture in Bethesda games – Fallout 3 is still packed with them. But, for the most part, they’re little things.
Beyond my one small inconvenience, I haven’t had too many weird problems. The walls in my house disappeared for a little while, but that’s about the strangest thing. One fix I’d like to see: a dramatic improvement in follower intelligence or resilience.
What’s the weirdest/worst Skyrim bug you’ve encountered?

The simple but incredibly difficult turn-based strategy game is headed to the iPad, where it will likely fit right in.
Frozen Synapse is a game in which you take the role of nameless green man and move around a maze-like map trying to shoot nameless red men. At least, I think it is – a friend sent it to me on Steam and I only played it for about ten minutes before getting frustrated and turning on an old episode of Futurama.
Of course, other gamers aren’t quite as incompetent as me, and Frozen Synapse is, unsurprisingly, a resounding success. The developer, Mode7, has confirmed that they’ve digitally delivered over 30,000 copies of the game since release. Now, they’re looking to land a few thousand more in the form of an iPad adaptation, scheduled for some time in 2012.
Managing director Paul Taylor summed up the idea nicely in the press release announcing the move:
"Despite my lumpen, sausage-like digits, I am particularly excited about Frozen Synapse coming to iPad. I look forward to flicking my little green men around the place with wanton abandon.
"Not only are we doing this iPad thing, but we are also looking at better ways of updating and supporting the game on its current platforms - expect some new things in the New Year."
After playing the game, even for a few minutes, it feels pretty obvious that the Frozen Synapse will be right at home on the iPad. iPad games work best when the controls are simple but the missions are hard, and that’s exactly what Frozen Synapse seems to be.
Anyone going to pick this up for their iPad, or did you get your fill on the PC?

Ó

The game developer struggles to keep up with an enormous wave of bug reports, graphical errors, performance issues and driver problems.
It wasn’t but a few hours after yesterday’s launch of “Rage” that reports started to trickle in about problems with the PC version of the game. Screen tearing, missing textures and a variety of other problems were reported by users of both Nvidia and AMD graphics cards, and Bethesda worked to remedy the situation by advising people to update their drivers and eventually released an updated set specifically for “Rage.”
While this seems to have solved a large number of the issues being reported, Bethesda is still working with the PC gaming populace and has posted a massive list of troubleshooting techniques for those users still experiencing problems after updating to the new drivers.
The list is pretty in-depth and I imagine will be continually updated as Bethesda targets and resolves issues as they are reported by gamers. It’s unfortunate to see such a well-reviewed game experience this much difficulty at launch, as there’s no telling how many players may have simply given up and moved on to other titles.
Unfortunately for casual PC gamers like myself, the solutions currently offered by Bethesda involve modifying settings that aren’t necessarily represented in the game’s built-in menus.
For example:
“The user can force V-sync on or off in the graphics vendor control panel. Right-click on the desktop to access the graphics vendor control panel.
If V-sync is forced on then RAGE will always V-sync.
If V-sync is forced off then RAGE will auto-detect that V-sync is not working and RAGE will instead synchronize to real-time and screen tearing may occur.
Alternatively you can force V-sync on by adding the following to the RAGE launch options in Steam:
+r_swapInterval 1”
I’m sure that paragraph means something to some PC gamers, but it looks like a bunch of gibberish to me. I guess less tech-savvy players will just need to wait until an official fix is patched into the game, which I’m sure won’t take too long considering the sheer volume of the complaints.
Are you experiencing any issues with “Rage?” How did you fix them?

It's still not confirmed yet, but it should be a spot of bright sunshine for awaiting PlayStation Vita fans all over.
As rumors would have it, Sony is actually going to send out their downloadable titles for a cheaper price than those being sold at retail. That's certainly good news, particularly because the handheld won't be including a memory card when it ships out to retail.
Much complaining has been made once this bit of news was  confirmed by Sony, and really, it does beg clarification as to why Sony would require it to be a separate purchase, considering that it's an integral part of the system.

In celebration of Zelda's 25th Anniversary, Nintendo launched to the public an official Japanese website specially made for the occassion.
In it, you can find everything there is to know about the franchise's history, from the very first title, to the most recent and upcoming ones.
It's definitely a trip down nostalgia lane, with various mementos on Zelda showing up, from soundtracks to orchestra performances, downloadable wallpapers, and many more.
We do expect them to continue filling up and updating the site the rest of the year to continue the celebration.
If you want to catch the Zelda orchestra live, then you might as well pick up your tickets now from Ticketmaster. The orchestra will be coming to Los Angeles later this October. If there's one thing you can scratch off your wishlist for this occassion, though, is a Zelda Collection. No siree, it's not happening, already said Nintendo.
