The new “Metro” dashboard update is causing a few problems for streaming video, problems Microsoft apparently knew about before launch.
Software launches are always hit and miss. Some features end up working just as planned, and others end up breaking or completely disabling your system. Win some, lose some. However, in most cases, the bad things that come with a software update are unexpected problems a developer must race to fix – not well known bugs that have been reported time and time again by your beta community.
This is exactly the case when it comes to the new Microsoft Xbox dashboard. The latest update, titled “Metro,” added all sorts of interesting features to the Xbox dash. It also, however, seems to have had a negative impact on the way videos appear on your screen. While not hugely different from the original dashboard video playback system, whatever Metro uses to show video is washing out colors and making videos look a little less vibrant.
The issue was reported several times by the beta testing community that had early access to the Metro dashboard, and Microsoft’s response was apparently, “Yeah, we’ll get right on that.” The video playback issue is especially strange when you consider that Metro is billed as the Xbox’s huge multimedia update, and it’s very annoying that they’d run a beta then ignore the feedback of their testers.
Overall, feedback for Metro has been mixed. Personally, I like some of it, and hate other parts. The Netflix update, for example, is pure garbage. But I like the revisions to the main screen; they make it easier for me to push through my most commonly used applications (read: Battlefield 3, Netflix).
Have you had any issues with Metro? What are your thoughts on the new dashboard?

Microsoft’s fall re-design apparently hit some sort of snag, and doesn’t seem to be launching today.
Today was supposed to be the day our lives changed. Today was supposed to be the day that the Xbox 360 re-invented what a console could do, and gave us new ways to watch television and interact with our friends. At least, that’s the line that Microsoft has been feeding us since announcing the Metro dashboard update what seems like a thousand years ago.
And here we are after months of waiting. It’s officially time to download that Xbox update, and delve into its rich multimedia capabilities. Except – where is it?
Despite Microsoft pushing the release as hard as humanly possible this week, it looks like Metro has experienced some sort of unexpected problem and isn’t currently available to Xbox owners. Major Nelson, the director of Xbox Live programming, let everyone know that the dashboard update has been delayed, and that details would come later this afternoon.
For now, you’ll just have to deal with the old dashboard. How will you ever survive?

The new dashboard for the Xbox 360 launches this week, but it may be missing a few of its most anticipated features.
If you were excited about bringing your favorite television shows to your Xbox dashboard, you may be in for a bit of bad news this morning, as it looks like some of the bigger partners for Microsoft’ big re-launch aren’t quite ready to send their services to the console. Xfinity, Verizon, HBO and the UFC are all reporting that their services will unfortunately be unavailable at launch, with a planned “early 2012” release.
It’s definitely a bummer for anyone that was expecting to merge their two services together, but for the most part this delay probably doesn’t affect most Xbox users. It does cause one to wonder whether Microsoft is actually ready to push the update live, or if they’re just rushing it out so they can meet the goal they set for themselves.

Microsoft’s slick new Xbox dashboard has an official release date, and it’s very, very soon.
The original Xbox 360 dashboard left a lot to be desired, but it had a certain charm. Over the years, Microsoft has tuned and re-tuned the dashboard to make it easier to use and, more importantly, easier to sell you things like movies, apps and downloadable content.
The latest version of the dashboard, now titled “Metro,” is scheduled for launch December 6th and brings with it a whole slew of new features and options.
The dashboard boasts full Kinect support, Bing voice search, Beacon-marking, sharing of achievements to Facebook and plenty of other new features. Additionally, expect to see the early versions of Xbox TV or whatever they’re calling it, with a variety of service providers bringing their programming directly to the dashboard (for a small fee, of course). Microsoft updates the providers based on contractual obligations and regions, so look around for specific info regarding what you’ll actually be able to access.
One major point in the update notes: the addition of cloud saving for all Xbox Live Gold members. The benefit here is that you can back up your game saves to the Microsoft cloud, allowing you to share them across consoles – a much-needed feature, especially as our poor little HDDs get filled up.
What do you think about the new features coming to the dashboard? Is there anyone out there that’s been playing with the beta and has a few comments regarding its functionality?

If you’re playing Arkham City on the Xbox 360 console, you may be at risk of losing your data.
Batman: Arkham City is one of the most well received games of the year and millions of gamers have spent considerable time tracking down Riddler trophies and beating up thugs, but those gamers that chose to play the game on Xbox may find that their hours of work have been instantly destroyed by a strange bug. Whew, long sentence. Short version: your Arkham City saves are at risk.
For some reason unbeknownst to Rocksteady, the game’s developer, certain Xbox 360 users are loading Arkham City (the hardest game name to type) only to discover that their save data is completely inaccessible.
Stories started rolling in a few weeks ago of players unable to access save data, and it looks like the problem has become more than a few isolated incidents. Here’s a basic rundown of what’s happening: while the save file seems intact on the console hard drive, the game can’t read or write to it. This effectively makes it useless. Users have reported the problem coming up at random times, with some players far into the games and others just beginning.
The bad news is that Warner Bros. and Rocksteady have no idea what’s causing the problem, but the good news is that they’re working on it. You can help them suss it out by emailing support@wbgames.com with the following information, assuming you’ve experienced the problem yourself:
Which XBOX 360 are you using?
How are you storing the save file?
Which version of the 360 software do you have?
Are you running a Beta of the new dashboard?
Did the issue come up before/after installing DLC? Which DLC?
Did the issue come up before/after the two patches pushed to the game?
I’m sure they’ll get it figured out, but we’ll have to wait and see if those saves are just gone forever or recoverable. In the meantime, it may be safer to play on PS3.
What do you think of this whole mess? Are the players that lost their files entitled to some sort of compensation? Free DLC would be nice!

Master Chief’s hotly anticipated return is getting a minor graphical overhaul courtesy of 343 Industries. But how much change is too much?
Halo 4 is looking like it’s going to be one of the biggest releases of 2012, if not in terms of sales then definitely in terms of hype. It’s a big moment for the still-unproven 343 Industries, whose only contribution to the world of games so far is a pretty lame Xbox 360 Dashboard app. Details on what exactly we can expect in Halo 4 are slim; mostly we’re getting the basic developer line of “amazing action sequences” and “incredible set pieces” we get every time a top title returns.
Game Informer recently snagged Kiki Wolfkill (rad name) from 343 Industries and while she didn’t get specific about in-game plot events or the return of fan favorite characters, she was able to shed just a little bit of light on what sort of graphics experience is planned for this new reboot of the Halo franchise:
“It’s different from Anniversary. This is an engine based on some of the past Halo tech for sure. But it’s also something this team has been working on to sort of optimize it for what we’re doing. It’s a completely internal piece of technology, but it is based on a lot of the Halo foundational tech.”
While it’s nice to know that Halo 4 will receive a much bigger visual upgrade than what we’ve seen in the upcoming Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, it’s a little troubling to find out that the development team is using words like “optimized” and “past Halo tech.” I’m sure 343 feels the pressure of the community and is working hard to make Halo 4 the best game they can, but messing with the old engine and applying a few minor upgrades isn’t going to be enough to really bring the game into the next generation.
Some sneaky gamers have managed to pull a bit of Halo 4 alpha footage and post it to the web, and for the most part, it looks like Halo 3. Hopefully that’s just a rough cut.
Are you confident that 343 can handle Halo 4, or are you concerned with their lack of experience?

Microsoft has its eye on the Thanksgiving holiday for a new dashboard rollout and the addition of television-related services.
Last week, we talked a bit about the new features coming to the updated Xbox 360 dashboard. At the time, no release date had been made available to the public, but it was generally accepted that the refresh would take place sometime during the fall or winter. As of today, thanks to the IGN rumor mill, it looks like you can count on seeing the new update on November 25th.
With the new dashboard comes a variety of new features, including an HBO app, cloud storage, more Kinect integration and an overall improvement to the browsing experience. The new dashboard is also supposed to make grouping up with your friends a little easier, allowing your in-system actions to be shared through Facebook and other social media.
The purpose of the redesign is two-fold – Microsoft wants to make it easier for you to find the content you’re looking for, but is also hoping to improve the software framework used by the dashboard so third-party app developers have an easier time creating content. Many of the new apps use Microsoft’s Silverlight framework, which in theory allows any Silverlight developer to create an app for the new dashboard.
There has been no official comment from Microsoft regarding the leaked date, but it’s safe to assume it’s relatively correct – Microsoft has made no secret out of targeting the holiday season for its biggest Xbox 360 overhaul in recent memory.
Will the new dashboard have an impact on the way you play games, or are you expecting it to be more of the same?

Brutal full-contact fighting makes its way from pay-per-view cable channels directly to your Xbox dashboard, starting on December 10th.
Microsoft let us know that UFC content was coming to the Xbox 360 way back in June, and details are finally surfacing on what fans can expect from the in-dashboard UFC app. So far, it’s been confirmed that you’ll be able to pay to view certain UFC matches, which makes sense considering that UFC relies heavily on pay-per-view fees to keep itself going.
Fans that use the app will be able to choose between high-def presentation, broadcast live at 720p, and standard definition, with price differences between the two formats. You won’t need to buy Microsoft Points to order a program, instead using your credit card. This will certainly be appreciated by the many gamers that aren’t particularly fond of purchasing a ton of Microsoft Points only to be left with a balance that’s only good for renting half a movie.
The app will also include on-demand video, previews of upcoming fights, weigh-ins and full fighter records for each fight. You’ll also be able to make predictions about certain fights, which will be tracked in real-time against the predictions of your friends.
Look for the UFC app on your Xbox 360 dashboard on December 1st, just after the November 15th release of the updated interface. The first fight available through the app is December 10th’s UFC 140, featuring Frank Mir vs. Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira and Jon Bones Jones vs. Lyoto Machida.
Are you planning on downloading the UFC app? Personally, I’m waiting for the next Shane Carwin match-up.

Europeans can now stop wondering if they're getting the brand new Xbox 360 Media Remote. Microsoft has confirmed that they will be shipping out their latest Xbox 360 accessory to the region.
The Media Remote allows users to control not only the Dashboard, but also the DVD and CD playback, as well as the media playback through the Xbox Live.
Confirmed Media playback controls are:  play/pause, skip forward, fast forward, skip back, fast back, display to control DVD, CD, streamed media. Apart from that, it also includes functions for the basic TV controls.
Probably the best part about this is that it will come at a pretty cheap UK£ 14.99 (ERP), and will be available in stores beginning some time early November this year.
More than additional accessories, however, what Microsoft should probably look at is a new price drop, seeing as how bullish Sony is being with the PS3's. It's tough competition out there, just saying.

A problem's cropped up with the Uplay Passport for Ubisoft's Driver: San Francisco. Several reports have surfaced that North American gamers who purchased the Xbox 360 version are not getting the pass as they should, given that it's not included in the box.
The Uplay Pass is a code which extends the 48-hour trial period for the multiplayer mode. In response to this, Ubisoft has now set up a quick work-around, allowing gamers to get the Uplay Passport for free if purchasing from within the game. Unfortunately, it's still not available via the XBL Dashboard.
Hopefully, Ubisoft will be releasing a statement soon clarifying for how long this free set up will last, or what their other plans are for this Uplay Passport issue.

As far as we know, no public beta has been announced for Modern Warfare 3. So to see some people posting screenshots of it on Xbox Live is definitely curious.
One suce user would be A4VARMY, which was put up over on Twitter. It's most likely a closed beta since, as mentioned earlier, Activision has made no official announcements about a public testing for it.
Now that it's been mentioned, it would probably be a good idea for them to come out with a public beta for the game. After all, GameStop had recently confirmed that Modern Warfare 3 is already being surpassed by Battlefield 3 in terms of pre-order.

A Modern Warfare 3 is commencing, so it seems, if those Twitpics of it on the XBL Dashboard are any indication.
