Why are games so easy now?
When Dark Souls came out last year, it was hailed as one of the most difficult games ever made. Boasting brutal mechanics and punishing scenarios, Dark Souls was a rare return to the challenging button mashes of the past, in which luck and repetition had as much to do with success as the player’s skill level.
One of the reasons that Dark Souls garnered so much attention is that difficulty in games has effectively died out. Games just aren’t as hard as they used to be—there’s no denying this fact. There are several reasons for the change; games are longer, control mechanisms are deeper and more people play games than just a select few hardcore gamers. But one of the big reasons appears to be that developers just don’t think about making things hard anymore.
Most games have some sort of optional “hard” mode. However, it’s rare that snapping a game into hard mode has any real effect on gameplay besides making your character easier to kill, and enemies harder. Unfortunately, “hard” has become a loose translation for “cheap”; no real care seems to be placed on balancing the varied difficulties to present a meaningful difference.
Games need to be harder, but developers need to actually create experiences that are challenging. Cheap doesn’t cut it. Simply bumping an enemy’s health pool up and reducing accessible ammo isn’t any sort of fundamental change. I’m sure you can think of more than a few culprits when it comes to the hard/cheap boundary.
Devs need to step it up, or they risk losing the hardcore crowd.

Fans are foaming at the mouth for a PC port of this devastatingly difficult console title.
Dark Souls was one of the most interesting games of 2011, bringing difficulty back to the masses and causing the death of many a controller. However, PC players were miraculously spared from this destruction, left only to imagine Dark Souls’ horrors based on the hollow faces of their console-going friends.
PC players seem to be clamoring for a bit of punishment, as an online petition has amassed 50,000 signatures requesting that From Software make some sort of PC version of Dark Souls. We mentioned the petition last week, and since that time, it has landed additional 10-15,000 signatures. As petitions go, it seems to be a pretty good one.
It’s unclear whether developers respond to fan petitions, but I’m sure From Software is weighing the cost of building a PC port against the potential profits. If there’s money to be made, you can bet Dark Souls will eventually find its way to a gaming PC near you. There’s been no response from the developer as of yet, but we’ll keep you posted.
It’s worth noting that this whole thing was set off by an administrator post on the official forums, stating that an adaptation would be possible with the right amount of demand. Perhaps From was testing the waters?
Would you like to see Dark Souls on your PC?

Sure Dark Souls was one of 2011’s toughest. But what about the games that came before it?
Last night, a friend and I played VVVVVV for the better part of two hours, pausing now and then to curse at each other via Steam. Neither one of us managed to make it very far – the game is just brutal, and I’m still trying to get the hang of the control scheme. But my repeated failures got me thinking about difficult games, and the satisfaction that comes from besting them.
We’ve seen a lot of talk about games like VVVVVV, Super Meat Boy and Dark Souls this year, but they’re only the latest in a long stream of incredibly difficult games. So I wanted to talk to you, the QJ community, and see what you believed to be the hardest games ever made.
Personally, I think Ninja Gaiden 2 is one of the hardest games I’ve played in my long history of gaming. It was a beast from start to finish, and even with infinite continues, many gamers simply set it aside in frustration. Battletoads was another in a similar vein. I’m talking old-school, hardcore games that depended on trial, error, luck and skill.
It seems like every console generation has had at least one soul-crushing game – remember Altered Beast?
So sound off, QJ – what earns your vote as the hardest game ever made?

mfninja1Sure Dark Souls was one of 2011’s toughest. But what about the games that came before it?

It’s time for gaming outlets across the globe to drop their top ten lists, but we’d rather know what you think.
It seems like everyone in the world of gaming journalism is wrapping up the year with top ten lists galore – top ten games, top ten games by developer, top ten disappointments, etc. We here at QJ aren’t immune to the listing phenomenon, but rather than compile our own list (which would probably look similar to those already published), we figured we’d take the whole thing to our readers.
What we want to know is which games captured your imagination this year, which games you loved and which games you thought didn’t get enough attention from the gaming press. We’d also love to know which games you thought were the most overhyped, or the most disappointing. Feel free to drop your own list in the comments – we’ll be reading them!
Here’s a quick reminder on some of the big and notable titles of the year:
L.A. Noire
Batman: Arkham City
Portal 2
Modern Warfare 3
Bastion
Star Wars: The Old Republic
Assassin’s Creed: Revelations
Saints Row the Third
Battlefield 3
The Witcher II
Dungeon Siege 3
Dead Space 2
Gears of War 3
Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Minecraft
Super Mario 3D Land
Dark Souls
Whew – that’s a lot of games, and we’re sure we missed a few somewhere in there. So sound off and let us know – which game was the most fun, which was the most beautiful, which is the one you’ll play the longest?

Find out what your fellow QJers are talking about this week, as drama blooms from all corners.
Indie developers take a shot at Nintendo and Sony, GameStop leaked potential Vita memory card prices and Iran has a serious problem with one of the biggest games of the year. These are among the hottest news posts here on QJ, sparking up intense arguments and polite discussion from readers.
If you’re just sitting down for your Saturday reading, we’ve compiled five of the biggest stories from the week right here so you can get up to speed post-haste. Also, as is now Saturday tradition, I’ll be awarding one lucky/unlucky QJ reader the prestigious “Comment of the Week” award.
Without further ado, here’s your:
Should Nintendo and Sony Stop Making Consoles?
Indie and mobile developer Andy Payne thinks that Nintendo and Sony are limiting themselves by making their own hardware and developing software with exclusivity. His recommendation is that they stop worrying about hardware and focus entirely on software, distributing to mobile markets. What do you think?
Iran Bans Battlefield 3
The Iranian government is not pleased with the way Iran was treated in Battlefield 3, to the point of banning the game from sale in their country. The game’s primary offender? A staged attack by U.S. forces against Iran’s capital city of Tehran. There are two sides to this argument – you could argue that Iran is overreacting to a video game, but you could also argue that they’re justified in objecting to the content. Where do you land on this one?
Where and When Should the Next Assassin’s Creed Go?
We know Ubisoft is planning another Assassin’s Creed game, and it looks like they’re turning to their players for advice on where to set it. A leaked survey to fans of the franchise lists several possible locations, including the Victorian British Empire, Medieval China, and even the American Revolution. You can see the full list on the post and add your favorite location in the comments.
PlayStation Vita Memory Cards are Pricey
This is by far the most-commented story of the week – GameStop, using rough Yen conversions, posted prices for the proprietary memory cards that will be available for Sony’s Vita handheld, and gamers are not pleased with the cost. The smallest card, at 4GB, runs $29.99 – a far cry from what similarly sized non-Sony memory cards cost nowadays. Of course, Yen conversion is tricky, so we’ll have to wait on an official Sony announcement before throwing too big a hissy fit.
What is Your Game of the Year?
In this post, QJ writer Tim Curtain poses the question on everyone’s mind: What exactly is the best game of the year. With huge titles like Skyrim, Portal 2 and Skyward Sword on the list, it’s going to be hard for anyone to truly nail down a winner. Dark Souls is making a strong appearance in the comments section, as is Portal 2 – what game would you call the best if you had the chance?
Those are your five most talked about QJ posts for the week. And now it’s time for that very special Saturday ritual – the awarding of Comment of the Week. This week’s award goes to triac for his comment on Skyrim Patch Breaks More than it Fixes:
The CG machine is broken again!

A huge patch to the incredibly difficult game adjusts some stats, item drops and other details.
Dark Souls is quickly earning a reputation as one of the hardest games ever made. Every post or update I see about it makes some sort of passing mention of its difficulty. Not having played Dark Souls, I can’t comment on whether or not it’s truly difficult, but it certainly seems so from where I sit.
Thanks to a large patch, released yesterday here in the States, Dark Souls may have just gotten a tiny bit easier. The patch is also live in the U.K., but only for the PS3 version of the game.
The patch addresses a number of concerns by fixing glitches, improving targeting, and upping the rate at which items drop. The patch notes are long, but here are some of the greatest hits:
Enemy soul drops improved
Covenant and Equipment Enhancement item drops improved
Paying for sins is cheaper
Lock-on improved
Freezes fixed
Stuck issues resolved
You can check out the full patch notes here: Dark Souls Patch Notes
What did you think of Dark Souls? Incredibly difficult, or incredibly overrated?

The enormous online retailer offers a pretty sweet deal for gamers looking to pick up more than one of the biggest titles of the year.
Let’s face it, 2011 is a ridiculous year for games. There are so many great titles coming out this year that it’s a wonder we’ll find time to play them all. And, unfortunately, it seems that a large majority of the best titles are hitting shelves all within the same general timeframe. While it makes sense for developers to target the holiday season, it’s pretty tough on passionate gamers who have to think with their wallets.
On the plus side, Amazon.com is making it a little easier to get the games you want with a limited time buy two, get one free promotion. They’re not junk games, either – I see Arkham City, Gears 3, Kirby’s Return to Dream Land, Pokémon Rumble Blast, Dark Souls and Rage on the list, in addition to plenty of others.
Here’s the way it works – you buy any three games on the list from Amazon, and they’ll comp you the cheapest one. If you were planning to buy any three of the games you choose anyway, you’re coming out a little bit ahead of where you would have been. There are plenty of cheap games on the list, so this may be the perfect opportunity to pick up a few titles you may have missed this year.
I think I’m going to grab Super Paper Mario, Kirby’s Return to Dream Land and Arkham City. What three games are you putting in your Amazon cart?

Art books, soundtracks and armor sets mark the big gets in the fighter’s newest collector’s edition.
Collector’s editions have been light in the past, with many developers dropping a special DLC code or some other trifle in the box and calling it a day. Not so for Namco, who have just revealed the details of the Soul Calibur V Collector’s Edition package. Fans of the series will find plenty to enjoy in the CE, which hits shelves January 31st.
The collector’s edition comes complete with a soundtrack for the game, an artbook of the characters and environments, and an exclusive behind-the-scenes featurette. Collector’s edition owners will also have the advantage of downloading special armor sets, titled “Dark Knight” and “White Knight” respectively.
What’s really cool about this particular collector’s edition is the design – the box is engineered to resemble an old book, and it opens in the same way a book would to reveal its contents. This, in addition to the recent revelation that Assassin’s Creed’s Ezio would indeed be a playable character in V, make the game even more interesting from the perspective of a wary Soul Calibur player.
I mean, I love the games, but it does feel quite a bit like the same thing over and over again. It would take some serious innovation or a particularly cool collector’s edition to sell me another Soul Calibur, and Namco certainly seems to be on the right track. I’m excited to see how Ezio fares, although his addition may be lights out for some of the cheaper characters in the game.
Are you ready for another Soul Calibur? It doesn’t seem like IV came out all that long ago.

A deluge of news, reviews, gameplay videos and other Rage-related content storm the gaming press as the game hits store shelves in North America.
There are roughly ten new “things” coming out today, if you count games and various downloadable content packs. “Dark Souls,” a new “Spider-Man” title, “NBA 2K12” and “Orcs Must Die” are all making their debuts, but you surely wouldn’t know it if you followed the traditional gaming press. Looking over my Twitter feed (follow me! @mikedotfoster), it looks like the games media has settled in on their big title of the week: “Rage.”
So, to save you some time wading through the pile of words that have already been written on the subject, I figured I’d let you know what people seem to be feeling in regard to what is apparently the biggest title of the week. Here goes nothing!
PC Gamer calls the game “simple, satisfying” fun, praises the enemy A.I. and says that while the game is still very linear, the smooth controls and exciting action make it interesting all the way through. They rated it an 84 out of 100.
IGN says that “Rage” is one of the best-looking games ever made, boasts “excellent shooting sequences” and speaks positively on the single-player campaign as well as cooperative missions. Staying true to form, they give the game 8.5 out of 10.
Game Trailers calls the cinema writing “rote,” criticizes the lack of an overarching plot to guide the player and notes the anti-climactic ending, but looks positively on the well-realized characters. Gameplay and graphics win the day, earning the title 9 out of 10.
GamePro is exuberant about the vehicle sequences in the game but notes hit detection and graphics problems on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. They also note an anti-climactic finish but say that the smart A.I and vivid environments more than make up for story problems and minor bugs. Four stars.
If you’re keeping track, it looks like “Rage” is a fun, well-designed experience with great graphics but not much of a story. Most reviewers also noted that while the game is billed as an RPG, there isn’t much in the way of open-world exploration and true RPG fans may find the game limiting. Regardless, “Rage” is certainly sounding like a strong buy, with minor issues that will likely be patched up later.
Did you pick up “Rage” today? How are you enjoying it so far?

Xbox 360 players of Dark Souls are missing out on one integral feature, so it seems. This would be the party chat mode, which is available in the game's other versions.
As reports would have it, being connected to an Xbox Live party automatcially prevents you from going to Online Mode when playing Dark Souls.
If you do insist and try joining a party, this is the messgae that you will get: "Cannot continue game because you are in party chat. Returning to tilte screen..."
Meanwhile, the other scenario is when you attempt to start up a new game, while already being inside an XBL party already: "You are in a party session. Online Mode is inaccessible. Game will start in Offline Mode."
So basically, it's going to be pretty much an either-or thing. Either you prioritize playing Dark Souls in itself, or choose to chat with your friends. Things is, this is what XBL promised to deliver to begin with: interactivity with your friends in real-time while playing your game. That's what makes the game even more fun.
Namco Bandai has yet to offer an official statement regarding this issue. Prior to that, the Dark Souls Collector's Edition got a "downgrade", having a couple of items transformed into digital content. Game's out in North America, while Europe gets it later this Friday.

The wait will just be for a teeny bit more. Dark Souls has been confirmed to be delayed for Japan by developer From Software.
Due to "various reasons", the game will not be making its September 15th launch date in the land of the rising sun. It's not going to be too much of a delay, though, as it's been pushed back only by a week. The new release date will then now be on September 22nd.
They did not make mention on anything about the North American launch, however, but hopefully, it will not be affected by this Japanese delay.
Dark Souls comes out for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, published by Namco Bandai. Back in June, the Dark Souls team opened up a contest for the game wherein fans were encouraged to design their own shield and get the opportunity to win Dark Souls goods. There are also a bevy of bonus contents lined up for all awaiting fans.

Remember that awesome Dark souls Collector's Edition promised to North American fans? Well, there's a slight change in deliverables.
Originally, the promised items in the Collector's Edition are the following:
Metal case
Redeemable codes for two extras
Mini-strategy guide
Now, however, it appears that instead of getting the mini-strategy guide booklet, we're now getting it in the form of digital downloads. The making-of-videos, too. So to be clear, the only physical items you'll now be getting instead are the metal case and the redeemable codes, and the artbook.
The digital downloads, therefore, are the mini strategy guide, the making-of-videos, and the original soundtrack. It's still going to cost you US$ 59.99, though, which is fine considering that it's pegged exactly the same price as the standalone copy.
Besides, it's not like they actually took out the items, they just changed it into a different medium. As far as we know, though, the European version won't be getting any shake-ups in their items.
Dark Souls comes out October 4th, 2011. If you're thinking about taking advantage of streetbroken copies, you might want to rethink twice as Namco Bandai has got a punishment ready for you if you do.

A bit of a downgrade, but nothing that should cause you to panic.

dark-souls-box-thumbSome retail stores in Japan have apparently broken the game's official street date, and instead of whipping out the banhammer the devs have decided to deal with the early players in a decidedly Dark Souls way.

The PlayStation Access event will unfold its next run later this month, and is set to bring a truckload of goodies for all who will come.
To Bristol, UK, that is. According to Sony, the next PA affair will be kicking off on September 29th and will run until October 1st. Included in their line-ups are some of the much-awaited AAA titles for the PlayStation 3, such as Uncharted 3, Starhawk, and Ratchet & Clank: All4One. And that's just for their first-party line-up.
For third-party titles, they'll be bringing in Batman: Arkham City, Battlefield 3, Dark Souls, Assassin's Creed: Revelations, FIFA 12, Goldeneye 007, and even the newly released Resistance 3.
The best part about this? They're all going to be playable! On top of that, Lethal Bizzle will also be taking the stage on two nights of the event. Oh, who are we kidding? That's just bonus, but really, having that awesome a line-up is already good enough as it is!
In case you have the time (and the money) to head off to Bristol, then you might as well head off to PlayStation Access' official Facebook page linked below for details.

Dark Souls will be coming out with two versions of the Collector's Edition for North America and Europe each. While the Collector's Edition will be carrying both mouthwatering treats, there will be specific goods assigned for each region.
Explained Namco Bandai, the European version will get the follwoing items:
Folded box
Original Game Soundtrack CD
Behind-the-Scenes DVD
Complete guide
As for the North American version:
Metal case
Redeemable codes for two extras
Mini-strategy guide
Both packages sound swell, but I think the European version is getting the better end of the deal, you think?
Namco Bandai recently released the Masthead trailer for Dark Souls, and ESRB also gave out their ratings summary for it.
