Having trouble with a certain fight in Star Wars: The Old Republic? Dance it out!
In news that comes directly from the “how in the world did this get overlooked” file, it appears that savvy Old Republic players have picked up on a hilarious and game-breaking glitch in the popular MMORPG. Namely, that dancing while in combat makes your player character completely immune to damage.
The bug isn’t necessarily a god cheat – you’ll have to activate the dancing emote at just the right moment to make it work. However, if you happen to pull it off, you’ll interrupt the targeting of any enemy scoping you out for the duration of your dance. Oops!
It’s amazing that this bug somehow made it into the finished version of SWTOR, and you can bet that Bioware will be getting it patched post-haste. In the meantime, any mention of the bug is being removed from the official SWTOR forums; Bioware claims this is just standard operating procedure (they don’t want players spreading glitches).
SWTOR is still young, so there’s bound to be a few weird bugs. Every MMO has them – what is your favorite legendary MMORPG glitch?

Thanks to the free-to-play MMO’s “Tribunal” system, over one percent of players have been actioned for breaking the rules.
Controlling an MMO is hard. No matter how carefully you monitor your community and how much work you put into making sure people follow the rules, griefers, cheaters, hackers and jerks will always find their way into the woodwork. It’s why companies like Blizzard spend millions of dollars each year on a GM staff that exists almost exclusively to enforce the rules.
However, games like League of Legends, which are mostly free to play, simply cannot justify a large in-house support staff. And the staff would have to be large, considering the enormous population of LoL – 15 million at last count. So, the developers came up with a different way to keep everyone in line.
Riot Games, the company behind League of Legends, created an in-game mechanic they dubbed the Tribunal system. This system allows any player over level 30 to determine if action should be taken against another player. The system tracks votes from every player that interacts with that specific character, and once it passes a certain threshold, the case is sent to a small team of GMs for review. From there, the player is banned, suspended or pardoned.
Riot release a really cool infographic over the weekend that shows how the system has worked out so far. Some interesting numbers:
1.4% of players have been actioned by the system
16,000,000 votes have been cast
More than half of all punished players never re-offend
You can see the full infographic below.
What do you think of the Tribunal system?

If you’ve been busy with holiday preparations or fighting off dragon invasions, here are some things you may have missed.
It’s been a somewhat busy week for the games industry, though most of the news has to do with titles that have already been released rather than things that are about to come out. We’re fast approaching the end of the crazy rush of releases and people seem to be settling down into their gaming habits.
Modern Warfare, Battlefield and Skyrim dominated the news this week, and plenty of commenters stormed our posts to let their voices heard. So without further ado, here’s your:
Infinity Ward Swings the MW3 Banhammer
Modern Warfare 3 has been out since the 8th, and lead creative strategist Robert Bowling has confirmed that Infinity Ward has already banned over 1,600 players for cheating, hacking and glitching. Most people seem pretty happy about Infinity Ward’s commitment to stopping cheating, but some commenters can’t resist another chance to take pot shots at the Call of Duty franchise.
PS3 Battlefield 3 Owners Getting Battlefield 1943
Sony’s Jack Tretton announced that the PS3 version of Battlefield 3 would come packed with Battlefield 1943, but that bonus failed to materialize. Some gamers filed a class action lawsuit against EA (which I still don’t understand), and faced with intense media pressure and the ire of Battlefield fans everywhere, the developer caved. So, free Battlefield 1943 for everyone!
EB Games Canada Dropping Pre-Owned Games
There is a rumor floating around the retail games industry that EB Games, a subsidiary of GameStop, is planning to mix its used and new games together. The familiar yellow “used” tags will be replaced with white “used” tags, so while the games will still be noted as used products, the similar labels may confuse less savvy gamers. We’re still waiting to see how this story plays out.
Skyrim Map Contains all of Tamriel
One gamer’s realization that the entire landmass of Tamriel is built into the map for Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim led us to wonder why exactly the content was included. Some venture it’s intended as a resource for modders, some think it’s just to add realism to the environment, and some think it’s for potential DLC content down the road. What do you think?
Square Enix: We Want a Final Fantasy Every Year
Square Enix was apparently unhappy with the development time of Final Fantasy XIII and is hoping to up their release schedule to something more along the lines of Assassin’s Creed or Call of Duty. There seem to be people on both sides of this particular post, some excited about more frequent Final Fantasy games, others concerned about the quality loss that may occur as the result of such a cramped development schedule.
So there are your most commented posts of the week. And, as is now tradition, it’s time to award one lucky reader the prestigious “Comment of the Week” award. This week’s award goes to Harv_ironlung, for his very thoughtful and poignant response to Keith Vaz: Ban Call of Duty:

Well said, Harv_ironlung. I don’t think I could have said it any better myself.

Over 1,600 cheating cheaters have been banned from the game since its launch on the 8th.
There’s something uniquely “Call of Duty” about glitching and cheating. I’ve played plenty of online games, but glitchers seem to be more prevalent in the Modern Warfare games than any other. That’s not to say that there aren’t millions of awesome players working hard to build a great community, but the franchise always seems to have a bigger-than-average collection of bad apples.
Luckily for us nice players, Infinity Ward is watching Modern Warfare 3 carefully and staging precision missile strikes on the accounts of sneaky, unscrupulous gamers.
Robert Bowling, the voice of Infinity Ward in most situations, recently announced on Twitter that the account team there has banned over 1,600 accounts and counting. He goes on to state that any attempt to cheat or hack will be met with a zero-tolerance policy.
Infinity Ward is working hard to fix some of the exploits discovered, such as one that allows infinite stealth bomber runs and a number of basic clipping problems. Most games have a few minor issues at launch, and there doesn’t seem to be anything on the scale of Modern Warfare 2’s care package glitch, so MW3 is doing just fine. It needs a bit of help from its players right now, but most multiplayer matches are being executed without any troubles.
Have you run into any cheating cheaters in MW3 matches? If so, use the post-game report feature to let Infinity Ward know, and share your stories with us!

brink-thumb

Brink is Splash Damage's first ever original IP to come out in the FPS market, and they're reassuring us that this game will take you to a world you've never seen before.

Talking to CVG in a comprehensive sit-down interview, Creative Director Richard Ham gives more than just a few enlightening remarks about Brink, from making their first ever own IP and bringing it to the FPS market, to his opinion on the shape of the industry today.
Splash actually worked on some really big titles previously, such as Doom 3 (with id Software) and Territory Quake Wars (with Never Software and Underground Development), both for the PC. Brink then is their first official original IP.
"Wolfenstein Territory was obviously in the Wolfenstein universe, we helped out on Doom 3 and then we did Enemy Territory Quake Wars for the PC. Enemy Territory Quake Wars for the PC was a prequel to the Quake universe, it kind of charted the mechanical alien invasion of Earth."
"So we had to do concept art for everything from scratch; new Earth environments, new characters, but we didn't have to write the story, we didn't have to create it from the very beginning.
So Brink is the first game where, when I sat down and wrote the high-concept at the very beginning I was basing it on an idea for a setting that I felt was really unique, was really quite different from anything anyone else had worked on."
With all the other FPS games out there right now, what would separate Brink from the rest of the pack? How does he feel about the current state of the FPS market?
For Ham, he still finds the shooter market as the biggest in the world, on the Big 3 platforms (PC, Xbox 360, PS3). The important thing is that they continuously try to ramp it up with "something new, something unique, something different, something that they haven't seen before."
"For Brink, we have four or five firsts, in our past certainly -- I can't really speak for the competition. We wanted to massively advance the way that you move in a shooter. So we have a new system called SMART: you can now slide and vault and mantle and climb.
This is pretty significant not least because when you go and play another shooter afterwards it's incredibly frustrating when you can't jump a wall, vault over something, clamber something, because it's a system that's about moving and shooting."
This new SMART system, he says, is "a big part of the game for us." It should also be a first "for shooters to have that depth and aesthetic and gameplay effect in weapon and ability to customization in a shooter."
All in all, he says he feels pretty good about what they've accomplished with Brink "because we've got this world people haven't seen before that you experience persistently, that you can play through with a movement system that's different from the stuff that everyone else has done."
"Most importantly you can experience it in single-player, or co-operative, or full versus mode battles with a kind of smart approach to networking and playing with friends, that is just not possible with any other game on the market today."
He does, however, have reservations claiming that their AI is the best ever. "What we've come to expect from first person shooters is that , while sat on a mine cart, I have the hit detection box the size of a fridge, as do all the characters areound me so, if I shoot towards them, I hit them no matter how far away my shot is within that box..."
"Well none of that is what happens in real life or what real humands do. They might do it in the movies, which unfortunately is one of the biggest sources of inspiration for the way we do things in videogames. But if you wnat to see how humans move in the environment, wath the way they move in the environment in multiplayer.
So in Brink we wanted your single-player experience to be realistic and to represent what was going to happen when you started playing co-operatively with other players."
Brink, the FPS featuring parkour-inspired movement, is scheduled to come out in the US on May 17th, while Europe should get it on May 20th. The game will be featuring Steamworks integration, as well as the Valve Anti-Cheat syste
