You know, that Facebook store that no one knew existed.
Did you know that Facebook has storefronts where you can buy things from your favorite companies? Me neither. And, apparently, neither did the 3.5 million people that follow GameStop on the social networking site. Thanks to the total lack of interest, GameStop has officially shut down its Facebook store just six months after launch.
Apparently, Facebook shopping was supposed to be the next big thing in online retail. Some analysts thought that Facebook would turn into its very own shopping destination. However, it turns out that people don’t really feel like buying stuff when they’re hanging out with their friends. Not to mention that the entire effort was poorly marketed—most customers didn’t even realize that retailers even had a Facebook store.
GameStop isn’t alone in this disaster. Gap, J.C. Penny and Nordstrom have all open and then shut down Facebook stores in just the last 12 months. Overall, the experiment was a far cry from the Amazon and PayPal threat it was made out to be.
Did you ever make a purchase through GameStop Facebook? Did you even know that was a thing?

The publisher once again proves that it’s run by thieves and sneaks with a new Vita-specific price hike.
Have you played Dragon Hunter: Alliance? You know, the game you can pick up for $12.99 on PSN, or for $0.99 on the iTunes Store? It’s a pretty cool little game, priced exactly right for what you get. Unless, of course, you’re getting it on the PS Vita.
That’s because Ubisoft, publisher of the game and money-grubber galore, has pushed the price for the Vita version up to $39.99. And it’s not like the Vita version is a different experience designed specifically for the Vita—it’s a simple port with a few additional features.
I’d do the math on exactly what percentage that mark-up would be, but I’m not good with numbers. So, I’ll just assume it’s a markup of shitload percent, which I’m sure is fairly close to the actual amount. Ubisoft isn’t really known for caring about its customers, but a price gouge of this magnitude is almost unprecedented.
So, yeah, if you want to play Dragon Hunter: Alliance, just pick it up on your iPhone, iPad or PS3. Or, if you’re into throwing your money away, on the Vita.

If you’re still undecided on the Vita, swing by your local Best Buy and try the device out yourself.
Demo units are among the most important sales mechanics in the world of games hardware. There’s no telling how many consoles and handhelds were sold as a direct result of a browsing customer laying hands on the technology; this is especially true of handheld units, which you really need to hold to understand.
According to Destructoid, a couple of Vita demo units have shown up in a Best Buy in Connecticut. The games were equipped with small memory cards and the Little Deviants launch title (no Uncharted?!). Unlike the usual demo setup, these devices aren’t nailed to a wall or promotional stand and instead roam the store in the hands of employees.
There’s no word on how quickly Best Buy will be rolling the devices out nationwide, but it’s a fair bet you’ll be seeing them in your local store soon enough. If you want to get your hands on a Vita, the best thing to do is call the store to see if the demos are out.
Do you think trying a Vita in person will change your buying plans?

Today is your last day to buy games at the old five-system share rate. New Game limits are in place when the service comes back online.
We discussed Sony’s recent decision to change the game sharing limit from five games to two a few weeks back, and (judging from the comments) people didn’t seem too happy about the new policy. Regardless of booming customer complaints, Sony is moving forward with the plan and will take PSN down from 8am to 10pm (PST) tomorrow to implement the update.
This means if you want to buy games that still fall under the old five-game limit, you need to buy them before the service goes down tomorrow morning.
Sony is calling the 14-hour downtime “routine maintenance,” but it certainly seems like a long time for their online service to be off-limits. I don’t own a PS3 so I’m unfamiliar with their maintenance routine – please let me know in the comments if this is something they do frequently.
During the downtime, you won’t be able to access the PlayStation Store, Account Management or create new accounts, and you won’t be able to access your account via the web. Here’s one strange thing though, Sony indicates in their official blog that “some users” may still be able to play online. Some?
There’s also a PS3 firmware update included in the maintenance, but details are scant. We’ll keep you posted as we get more information.
How do you feel about the new game sharing limits?
