Adios, World of Warcraft Game Masters!
World of Warcraft is still the industry’s leading paid MMO, but the title has been steadily losing subscribers for the better part of two years. Though the holiday season treated WoW well (the MMO lost only 100,000 players), it’s clear that Blizzard needs to do some serious re-shuffling in order to keep the game profitable for the long term.
And re-shuffling is exactly what the company plans to do. Blizzard has just announced that it is laying off 600 employees, most of which work in customer support. According to the company, 90 percent of the layoffs are occurring in non-development departments of the company. 600 is no small sum—it represents a pretty large chunk of Blizzard-Activision’s total employee number of around 7,300.
Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime had this to say on the topic:
“In order to keep making epic game content while serving players effectively, we have to be smart about how we manage our resources. This means we sometimes have to make difficult decisions about how to best maintain the health of the company. We’re in the process of making some of those hard decisions now.”
In the face of these layoffs, there is still hope for aspiring developers. Blizzard is currently recruiting dev talent for some of its upcoming titles. And the layoffs don’t necessarily mean that Blizz is in financial trouble, just that World of Warcraft is no longer the money-printing machine it once was.
Do you still play WoW? Have you ever interacted with the game’s support staff?

Sometimes the best thing you can do for a game is pull the plug.
Battlefield is one of EA’s biggest brands, so it makes sense that the company would look to cash in on its popularity in any way possible. The most recent tie-in came in the form of an iOS game released for the iPad, known as Battlefield 3: Aftershock. There was only one problem: the game sucked.
Battlefield 3: Aftershock stayed live for only 15 days. Launched on February 7, the game was almost unplayable due to serious connection issues and an unresponsive control scheme. EA pulled the title from the iTunes store on February 22 so that it could tweak the title based on customer feedback.
So how did that tweaking manifest? EA is deleting the game, of course! In a statement issued earlier this week, EA confirmed that development on the game has been shut down completely, and that the servers will be pulled offline March 31.
Battlefield 3: Aftershock was free-to-play, so it’s not like anyone is really getting hurt by the game being taken offline. Anyone, of course, besides EA, who likely sank a large sum of money into the title before realizing it was a lost cause.
Did you play Battlefield 3: Aftershock? What did you think?

And a job offer.
There’s no question that piracy is a major concern in the games industry. While some pirates do turn into customers and there’s something to be said for how much DRM sucks, it doesn’t change the fact that pirating a game is, on some level of the word, theft. However, game developers tend to take different approaches to the pirate community—some declare war and some, like Starbreeze Studios, hold out an olive branch.
If you download and install the company’s latest game, Syndicate, via Origin or any other legitimate means, you’ll notice an .nfo file hidden in the game’s directory. .nfo files are usually found in pirated software—they tell you how to go about setting up the illicit copy and who is responsible for the hack, crack or upload.
But this .nfo file is different, in that it was placed there by Starbreeze devs. The .nfo file contains a description of the game and some install directions. They even made an ASCII logo. And at the bottom, the devs dropped this message:
“Over a hundred people spent several years of their lives making this game.
If you like what you play, please consider purchasing it if you haven't
The studio also reached out to gamers with talents in game design, art, programming and sound design—perhaps some gifted game pirates will take the opportunity to switch sides to the development side of things. You can see the full file here.
What do you think of speaking directly to pirates? Better than restrictive DRM?

Hey, at least they’re staying in their wheelhouse.
Do you love giant robots? More specifically, do you love building a giant robot, sending it into battle with other giant robots, and wreaking general havoc along the way? If so, you’re probably familiar with the MechAssault franchise and its developer, Day 1 Studios. Who, by the way, have just announced a brand new game.
Yes, it has mechs.
The new title, christened Reign of Thunder, is a brand new mech-based IP that the dev team is promising will be “hard-hitting, fast-paced, explosive” and other descriptive words as well. The team at Day 1 is also promising deep customization options for player mechs. Day 1 hasn’t jumped into the mech fray since 2004’s MechAssault 2, working instead on titles like F.E.A.R. and Fracture. Then again, 2012 seems to be the year of the mech, with a new Armored Core inbound and Day 1 returning to its roots.

And as we all know, Jack Tretton’s word is bond.
If there’s one thing Jack Tretton likes to do, it’s say stupid things. Every time the man opens his mouth, he immediately sticks his foot in it. But today’s news may be a little more on the safe side than his usual Wii-bashing or customer-challenging—he’s just talking about the PS4 instead of making grandiose claims about how amazing his existing systems are.
In an interview with IGN, Tretton waylaid rumors of a 2012 PS4 announcement, noting that Sony is still very focused on the PS3, as well as on making sure the Vita launches successfully in the west. He claimed that worrying about next-gen consoles this year would be a “distraction” for the company. This goes along the same path that Kaz Hirai was walking when he confirmed a ten-year life cycle for the PS3.
Still, one has to wonder at the wisdom of letting the other console makers pass you by. Wii U will have a considerable head start over the next Xbox system, and Microsoft will apparently have a similar head start over the PS4. It could be a good idea, but it could also be a big mistake for a company that’s already dancing on the precipice of a major hardware meltdown.
Of course, Tretton often says things that turn out to be as far from the truth as possible. So perhaps Sony is indeed working on the PS4, and Tretton either doesn’t know (because he’s an idiot) or is trying to play it cool (because he’s an idiot).
What do you think? Is Sony really going to wait until 2016 to release a new system?

The company is on the defensive after one developer threw the handheld under the bus.
Sony is reeling after one game creator suggested that third party developers have canceled their Vita projects and moved to the 3DS due to the handheld’s poor performance in Japan. A report in a Japanese newspaper carried the anonymous quote, which stated, “Major Japanese companies are cancelling all projects intended for Vita and are changing development to 3DS.” Sony wants you to know that this simply isn’t the case.
Scott Rohde, the senior vice president of Worldwide Studios said that while he didn’t see the specific quote, it’s not unusual to find “exaggerated” claims like that regarding untested products. He also noted that he knew of many third party devs working “feverishly” on Vita titles, and that it would be impossible for any one person to definitively say what every Vita studio may or may not be doing.
Edge magazine points out that calling the claims an “exaggeration” indicates that a few studios have indeed jumped ship, just not to the numbers the anonymous source stated. Whatever’s going on over in Japan, you can bet it will echo through the western marketplace.
Vita is just a few short days away from release and if the western launch isn’t strong, the device could be relegated to Virtual Boy territory. Right now, the Vita is being outsold by the 3DS and even the original PSP in Japan – not a good indicator of success. Sony isn’t known for being upfront with its customers, so the truth of the matter is probably somewhere between the two quotes.
We’ll just have to wait and see what happens. What do you think the fate of the Vita will be?

Steam releasing official iPhone and Android apps
Whilst it is in beta right now, Valve hope to roll it out properly before the end of 2012
I finally got my first smartphone this year and whilst I thought I was incredibly behind in my reaches for the most technically advanced thing since swearing robot's, it appears that big comapanies are only catching up to the big, bad mobile phone platform.
Steam released the app in it's current beta format yesterday and is only accessible to those who signed up for the beta on Steam can participate in the App which is for Android and iOS devices.
The app itself is not dissimilar to apps on both marketplaces which pertain to keeping up to date with your friends, browsing your community groups, profiles, check screenshots, user-generated content, sales and everything else Steam related. This is just an official app and it's free so it's good to see Steam not trying to compete with the other apps just for the dollar, dollar bill, y'all.
Gabe Newell spoke abou the service saying that it came "from many requests" from their user base. "Mobile is changing the way people interact, play games and consumer media, and the Steam app is part of our commitment to meet customer demands and expand the service functionality of Steam to make it richer and more accessible for everyone."
Anyone can currently download the app, put in their details and can browse till their hearts content. Hopefully it will all be optimised. I currently am not apart of the beta but will give my two cents when I can get a taste test of the cool little app.

Take that, Windows phones!
Want to play Xbox Live games but don’t have your Xbox nearby? How about an Android phone? According to one developer with a bit of inside information, Microsoft is currently working on an Xbox Live app for Android which will bring many of the service’s functionalities directly to Android users – including the ability to play games from Xbox Live Arcade.
This story actually broke thanks to a job posting on the official Microsoft careers website. The posting indicated that Microsoft had intentions to bring the Live service to Windows Phone, iOS and “other mobile platforms.” A quick bit of calling around, and it was easy to find a developer willing to confirm that Android was on the table. It’s a bit of an odd piece of news, since Microsoft has leaned so heavily on Xbox Live being exclusive to Windows Phone.
However, it’s always good to give your customers more ways to access your service. And while Microsoft isn’t conceding defeat in the mobile wars, they are aware that the Android and iOS markets are trouncing them in terms of mobile game sales. If they want to compete, bringing the Live app to Android and other platforms is essentially the only way to do it.
There’s no information on when we can expect an Android Xbox Live app, but we here at QJ will keep you posted as details emerge.

Ó

THQ hasn’t been doing great over the last few months, and this nasty letter from a former employee doesn’t make things look any better.
THQ, the company behind Saints Row: The Third, had a tough 2011. The company was in such dire straits that rumors floated around about it canceling its entire 2014 lineup, rumors the company vehemently denied. This morning we received word that THQ was shifting its strategies yet again, this time focusing more on its core franchises over third party licensing.
It’s hard to get a bead on exactly what’s happening with THQ. Rumors and sales indicate the company is in serious trouble despite the success of Saints Row, but the company refuses to admit that they have any sort of problem. Only one person seems to be willing to comment on the state of the company – an alleged former employee with an obvious bone to pick.
In a letter written to THQ’s Board of Directors, CEO Brian Farrell as well as the general public and a collection of gaming news sites, this “Formerly Mismanaged” employee rattles off a laundry lists of complaints about the company.
The letter essentially claims that THQ’s problems stem from mismanagement and a Board of Directors that has no clue how to strategically run a gaming company. It gives examples like acquiring game studios with no plan on how to utilize their talents (then later shutting them down), investing money into shrinking niche markets, the company’s refusal to dump a CEO that has tanked its stock price and high-paid executives making enormous mistakes that call their competency into question. The disastrous uDraw tablet also makes an appearance.
These allegations of management incompetency surface just a few days before THQ announces its current financial standing on February 2, and things certainly don’t look good. One analyst has gone on the record by stating that THQ, without some sort of financial windfall, with run out of cash near the middle of this year.
You can read the letter in its (extremely long) entirety below:
[JoyStiq]
"To:
THQ Board of Directors
Lawrence Burstein
James Whims, Gigex, Inc.
Henry DeNero, Arcturus Capital
Brian Dougherty, AirSet, Inc.
Jeffrey Griffiths , Lumber Liquidators
From:
Current and Ex-Employees, Shareholders, and The Public
Dear THQ Board,
I am an ex-employee at THQ. I saw the tweet-started headlines over the past week from an "industry expert." This expert is one who I and my friends and co-workers in the industry have never heard of after a long time in the field. I had been reading the various following articles and accounts and it generated sympathy for friends both recently laid off and currently still there. I thought it would be a good idea to send a note with their input. This note has honest facts and thoughts about THQ and the current problems there. Most of these facts are public knowledge and they have been confirmed by public records or can be confirmed by current and former THQ staff there both before and after my and their time.
I have long felt the need to explain to outsiders how this beaten-down company has wound up in this position. It is to the point where having it on your resume is not a point in your favor. And that shouldn't be the case. I'm/We're sending this note anonymously because some of us are still awaiting final checks and others know how little corporations like employees who air their dirty laundry. We feel the need to say something to combat the partial misinformation being written.
THQ had been known through the years for having a formula. They find a hot license, make a cheap game, barely advertise it, and make money. This formula worked during the Playstation and Xbox and Gameboy days and made the company a lot of cash. Unfortunately, THQ's old guard executives seem to be stuck trying to manage the company the same way they did back then and haven't realized the industry has changed.
The beginning of the end came years ago as Brian Farrell lead an executive team to acquire a large number of studios. A large amount of cash was used in the acquisition or setup of game developers with different degrees of talent. The problem was they were bought without strategic reasoning or specific plan on to use them. So after awhile another large amount of money was spent as those studios failed and were sold off and shut down. The executive team at the time were an entirely different group of people with one key exception in the CEO. The CEO/the then executive team wasted the cash that the company had built up with these massive investments and selloffs.
The studio purchase errors were not helped by the mistakes in the licensing deals that were signed by the same CEO. Millions and millions of dollars were wasted on acquiring licenses at the same time the kids, family, casual business was declining at a rapid rate. Instead of slowing those acquisitions he overpaid for more of them until again cash was wasted in paying for brands that didn't sell well anymore.
The mistakes in decisions and cash losses triggered wave after wave of layoffs. In the most recent wave, about 40 people lost their jobs this past December through no fault of their own. The reason why is the chronic and constant mismanagement of their company. The fact is that the CEO and executive committee were so focused on trying to hit an unrealistic financial goal that they bet everything on an extremely risky proposition in the uDraw tablet. When they lost, they further displayed their lack of management skills by not having a contingency plan. Three weeks after the game launched, an entire business unit was wiped out when it didn't meet its goal due to relying on that one product to hit an unrealistic target.
After the layoffs many ex-employees walked around shell-shocked and trying to figure out who was responsible. They came to the understanding that most of us do after leaving the company. The issue with THQ has never been one of lack of staff creativity, intellect or business intelligence. It all rests of the failure of its management team and you the Board of Directors.
This Board has allowed the Brian Farrell, the CEO, the ongoing ability to take a cash-rich profitable company and drive it from a $30 share price down to around $.70 without acting despite numerous mistakes that even for those lacking business training, could see were errors. Even without glaring mistakes how can the same CEO stay in charge after a 99% share price loss? Aside from the board, who is responsible for the current situation and who is accountable for the current and future job losses at the company? When you ask the recently departed who are a good source of information, you get the same answers. This uDraw failure is the largest and most recent one in a string of them that were hushed over and hidden. The answer aside from the Board is the current executive team that allowed this uDraw implosion to happen.
Brian Farrell, CEO with a 2011 salary of $1,289,558, for a lack of business intelligence or fiscal accountability. A vocal inside group pointed out the mistake of trying to launch a year-old product that received almost no software support in the last 12 months. Instead of listening and having a back-up plan, he went ahead and invested a ridiculous amount of money in the manufacturing and advertising of the product and failed miserably. It is passed time for him to go. We are wondering what is taking so long for you to act. We have been wondering this same question for a long time.
Martin Good, EVP and head of Kids, Family, Casual with a 2011 salary of $1,198,023, for bringing no strategic thought or business sense to the role. He was brought out from Australia sales to replace an outgoing head of the business unit and rapidly displayed a complete lack of leadership skills, vision, and any sort of analytical sense. Looking at his compensation package, he is an excellent negotiator as his salary is higher than anyone's except for the CEO. On the plus side he lost his job with the rest of those laid off. On the minus side, he will be floating down on a golden parachute while the rest of the former employees scramble to look for jobs in this challenging environment. Most of those jobs will be at studios in other parts of the country, so they will be forced to relocate their families in the middle of their childrens school years. It is incredible that he made this level of income while doing such a poor job, but it serves as a reflection of the lack of Brian Farrell's ability to staff well and manage.
Paul Pucino, CFO with a 2011 salary of $674,855, for not planning for this possibility and having a safety net or a plan to cover THQ just in case of failure. We have a line of credit that we likely used to buy the plastic that is not selling to customers. It is like taking a cash advance to buy THQ stock and just as worthless of an investment. Paul is known as an absentee executive who is missing when business situations gets complicated. While he was in the loop at the point of the risk, with the following failure he has been clearly unavailable. It is another example of Brian Farrell's inability to staff.
Ian Curran, EVP and head of global publishing with a 2011 salary of $1,037,047, for not flagging an unrealistic sales goal to the CEO or the Board when a big part of the corporation felt the numbers were unrealistic. He blindly held up an unachievable target and didn't act when multiple people told him he was aiming to high and out of step with the marketplace. If a sales executive's job is to anticipate the market, he has done a poor job of it. Another example of Brian Farrell not being able to find the right people for the right job.
Ed Kauffman, EVP of Legal and Business Affairs who clearly was signing bad deals on licensed products, not factoring in the changes in the business and being more critical with financial terms with partners. uDraw by itself cannot possibly explain the companies poor financial health. It is a combination of that product and a string of bad licensed deals that the company took on against better judgement. While Brain Farrell would logically be the final decisionmaker for deals, Kauffman is either unpersuasive in his arguments to not do them or supported them. Either situation equates to another example of poor staffing choices by the CEO.
uDraw was failure and the only people to blame are the people listed above. THQ and its current financial situation is also their responsibility. And they were paid around $4.5 million dollars for their poor decisions. If there is any doubt we would recommend talking to current and former staff to get the straight story. Don't read this note as bitterness on their part, but more as long overdue truth.
So, Board, it is time. Passed time for you to act and passed time for you to do something about the mismanagement that has gone on for too many years. We've watched the stock from the outside and read the comments and the reason why the company is valued so low despite its sales is because of this underqualified management team.
Board it is time for you to act before your names are added to the list above of things that must change.
Sincerely,
The Formerly Mismanaged"

Another week, another slate of game releases. As with last week, there’s not that much going on - we likely have a couple of weeks of slow releases before we start to see major AAA titles dropping again. Bu that’s okay, because we’re going to need all that extra time to wrap up the dozen or so great games that launched over the course of the last couple of months.
As is now the custom, here’s this week’s edition of:
AMY
Xbox 360, PC, PS3
ESRB Mature
Lexis Numerique
Gears of War 3: Fenix Rising Map Pack
Xbox 360
ESRB Mature
Epic Games
Dustforce
PC
ESRB Pending

Order Up!! 3DS

ESRB Everyone
Ignition Entertainment
Saints Row the Third: Genki Bowl VII
PS3, Xbox 360, PC

Volition
Stonekeep: Bones of the Ancestors

Alpine Studios
While the highest profile content is DLC for Saints Row and Gears of War, Dustforce looks primed to be one of those runaway indie hits. As with most entertainment products, we’re going to have to sit through the relative doldrums of January before things get interesting again.

The retailer’s fledgling iPhone/iPad/iPod trade-in market is apparently flourishing.
Earlier in the year, GameStop announced that it would begin taking trade-ins of iOS devices like iPods and iPads. The initial response was mixed, as it was hard to determine whether device owners would actually bring their hard-won devices into GameStop to trade for systems or games, especially given he company’s reputation for sticking it to trade-in customers.
According to GameStop, however, there’s no room for debate – the program has been a massive success. Company president Tony Bartel issued a statement declaring that the new service had “exceeded expectations,” and noted that GameStop was expecting a big rush in the post-holiday season due to gamers trading in old devices replaced by new gifts.
GameStop is by no means the only company that accepts iOS for trade, but it was a bold move for a retailer that focuses exclusively on gaming. Naturally, the company will need to continue to branch out as digital distribution becomes more and more viable – the trade-in market is the most valuable aspect of their business and will keep them solvent for years to come if they can stay on top of trends.

Oxeye’s side-scrolling action game will follow the same pre-release schedule as Minecraft, according to the publisher.
The publishing model for Minecraft doesn’t make sense at first glance: release an unfinished alpha game for free, upgrade it little by little and slowly make it cost money. It’s definitely not the traditional way to release a game, but Minecraft’s 4,000,000+ sales indicate that Mojang seems to have found what works for them.
They’re going to test this launch theory again with their next big release, Cobalt.
Cobalt is in development at Oxeye Game Studios and was only recently announced. The game will be published with Mojang, and is not to be confused with Mojang’s next title, Scrolls. Like Minecraft, the game will be release in an early alpha stage – players that elect to pick the game up at this time will receive all future updates for free.
There are rumors that a level editor will be included with the alpha version, as well as a method for customizing your character. If those features aren’t in the alpha, they’ll probably turn up in the beta.
Cobalt marks Mojang’s first attempt to publish someone else’s game, though Oxeye has noted that the process is much more of a team effort than the traditional relationship between publishers and developers. We’ll just have to see how it plays out in practice.
Do you think Mojang can continue to strike gold, or was Minecraft a lucky break?

The service, described by Activision as a “necessity” for future games, might be dead in the water for PC gamers.
Once upon a time, there was a company called Activision. This company, led by the shrewd but effective Bobby Kotick, practically reinvented the way games are developed, turning franchise studios into the equivalent of a car assembly line. Of course, Activision is always looking for ways to innovate (or, according to some gamers, squeeze a few more bucks out of customers), and their most recent idea came in the form of Call of Duty Elite.
Elite was intended to be a way to track your stats, interact with other players, and generally broaden your Call of Duty experience. Think of it like a new version of Bungie’s old stats tracker for Halo, or a slightly different version of Battlefield 3’s Battlelog. Elite came in two forms – free and premium, with premium subscribers also landing all future DLC and a couple of other perks.
But there was one problem with CoD Elite; mainly that Beachhead (the company behind the service) couldn’t get it to work for PC systems. When Modern Warfare 3 launched last week, we were told that Elite would be delayed for PC gamers due to concerns over stats rigging. Now, it looks like CoD fans may not see the service at all.
The official Call of Duty Elite Twitter page today posted a cryptic note indicating that while they’re working hard on Elite for PCs, they can’t guarantee “if or when” it will actually come around. That’s a pretty big “if,” considering how hard Activision pushed Elite as the future of gaming. This is just more bad news for the service, which has been plagued with issues since launching on consoles.
On the plus side, if you purchased Elite, at least you still get your DLC. Elite was a big chunk of the MW3 marketing blitz, so it’s unlikely they’ll completely scrap it. But PC owners may end up with a more limited version.
What do you think of Call of Duty Elite?

Talk of a special PlayStation Move accessory for BioShock Infinite is nothing more than rampant speculation, according to the game’s developer.
Yesterday, rumors started flying around that the PlayStation 3 version of BioShock Infinite would have one thing the Xbox 360 version did not: a customized Move peripheral. The rumor came from the last few sentences of a press release on the official PlayStation website, which stated “a special” Move device was in development specifically for the 2012 title.
Unfortunately, 2K Games has quickly spoken out on the rumors being false. Speaking to CVG, they confirmed that there are no special devices in development. BioShock Infinite will still support PS Move technology, just don’t look for anything that’s custom-tailored to the game. The press release has already been removed from the site, so it’s likely some intern just got in a heap of trouble.
We’re still months away from concrete information on Infinite, as 2K Games has played the title pretty close to the chest. All we know is that it takes place on a city in the sky, and that players will have a new companion with which to explore. What’s particular strange about this rumor is that it stated on an official PlayStation website and not through the speculation of a few fans.
So, perhaps there actually was something in development that got scrapped. Or, perhaps there’s still something in development, but it’s a secret. And finally, perhaps there’s just nothing in development and the site screwed up.
Which do you think is more likely?

The developers of the massively popular Star Traders and Cyber Knights have created an all-new game for the Android Market, titled Templar Assault.
The Android Marketplace doesn’t seem to get much love from the gaming press, which is a shame considering the high number of great titles available for gamers that have opted to ignore  iOS devices. Two of the most successful games for Android game in the form of Star Traders and Cyber Knights, both developed by a two-man team of brothers. As of today, you can add a third title to their resume: Templar Assault.
If you’re a fan of strategy games, Templar Assault is likely right up your alley. The game is a squad-based, turn-based strategy RPG that works similar in description to Advance Wars – i.e. players move units across the map and use them to attack other units. The game is packed with upgrades and unlockables, as an RPG should be, and promises at least a few hours of game time.
You can pick up Templar Assault on the Android Market right now, completely free of charge. As has become the custom, the Trese Brothers have made the game free to download, at least at first. They usually upgrade to a paid version once they’re finished with development.
So if you’ve got some time to kill but no money to spend, Templar Assault could be the perfect solution for a boring Monday afternoon.
What other awesome Android games haven’t received their due respect?

Gameloft drops a brand new FPS title to your phone or tablet, bearing a pretty familiar moniker and dancing with Activision’s legal devils.
If you’re following game news (and you’re reading this, so I assume you are), you’re probably familiar with a little title abbreviated as MW3. Activision’s latest entry in the Call of Duty franchise is going to be a sales juggernaut and there’s not much anyone can do to stop it. Gameloft seems to have another idea: capitalize on the hype with a similar looking and sounding game. The title, Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nations, is a fully realized FPS aimed at your Android or iOS device later on this week.
The game features a wide array of multiplayer maps, customizable weapons and more than a few perks that will be familiar to the Modern Warfare crowd, such as Sleight of Hand for quicker reloads and scoping. Modern Combat 3 is set for an October 27th release, though it’s important to remember that Gameloft titles usually drop for iOS devices a few days before they hit the Android market. Either way, you’ll be able to play it eventually.
Modern Combat 3 boasts full online play with stats tracking and leaderboards. The game supports matches of up to 12 players and plays out a lot like Call of Duty, with death match and capture games making up the bulk of the experience. If you’re looking for a console-like shooter on your Android device or your thing that starts with a lowercase “i,” this may be the game for you.
What’s really amazing to me is how Gameloft has managed to thrive without being obliterated by lawsuits. I guess as long as they dance around the copyright effectively, they don’t have much to worry about. It’s not like EA or Activision owns the FPS genre, and most shooters are pretty generic nowadays.
Do you think phones and tablets can provide a satisfying FPS experience? There are some that claim consoles can’t even do it right, I shudder to think of how they feel about the iPad. Even high action Wii games are shrugged off as sloppy.

Two of Sega’s top-selling iOS games are about to be made available to players free of charge, but only for 24 hours.
AppAllStar, a website dedicated to providing free daily apps for iOS users, just announced something they’re crowning  “Championship Week.” The event’s primary goal is providing players with the chance to download awesome apps without having to pay the normal cost associated with the game. The event is in celebration of the AppAllStar App receiving over a million downloads, so they’re looking to pass a little thanks on to their customers.
Championship Week begins on October 23rd, and it looks like they’re getting started with a bang. Both Streets of Rage and Super Monkey Ball 2, two of the most highly downloaded games in the iTunes app store, will be available for free downloads during Championship Week, with Monkey ball hitting on the 23rd and Streets of Rage 2 landing on the 28th. Like I said, you’ll only have 24 hours to download them, so mark your calendars.
There isn’t much info on what other titles will be offered during the week, but the AppAllStar press release indicates that they’ll be either Sega titles or games developed by SkyVu. Other developers may be in the mix as well – there’s no clear list of who is and isn’t participating.
All I know is that for seven days, you can look forward to getting one awesome free game per day. So why not take part? The only thing you have to lose is the time you spend downloading, and you probably weren’t going to accomplish much in that 30 seconds anyway.
As for me, I’m definitely getting in on Super Monkey Ball. I absolutely love that game series and for some reason didn’t even realize it was available for iOS devices.
Are you excited to get some free apps?

Earlier in the week, we found out that Bioware’s latest sci-fi RPG would be getting a pre-release demo. Now we have some more info for players that can’t wait to catch up with Commander Shepard and his/her crew.
Mass Effect 3 is easily one of the most anticipated titles of 2012. The first two games were both enormous successes for Bioware and EA, and even if you weren’t stoked on the changes made in Mass Effect 2, it’s still hard to spot a better sci-fi RPG. If you just can’t wait until March to get your hands on Mass Effect 3, you can jump into the pre-release demo starting in January.
The Mass Effect demo will include both single and multiplayer game features, but here’s the catch – in order to qualify for the early access demo, you’ll need to register an online pass from Battlefield 3. This won’t be a problem for the million or so people that have already pre-ordered BF3 and are stoked on playing, but some of those Call of Duty MW3 fans may be upset at the news. It does look like there will be an alternative method for getting in, but it’s not clear quite yet.
Here’s the full post, straight from the Bioware forums:
What are the details of the Mass Effect 3 pre-release demo?
•The Mass Effect 3 pre-release demo will launch in January 2012 (exact date TBA).
•The demo will include both single-player and multi-player sections.
•The demo will be released in all regions where the game is
How can I get early access to the multi-player portion of the Mass Effect 3 demo coming in January 2012?
•Owners of Battlefield 3, on any platform, who activate their Online Pass will automatically be granted early access to the multiplayer portion of the Mass Effect 3 demo. There is no need to enter any other codes, the early access will be applied to the EA Account associated with the Online Pass. Note: BF3 Origin Customers automatically have the BF3 Online Pass.
•This applies to all regions where the demo is released (to be announced)
•The exact date of the demo launch will be announced in late November
•There will be another program whereby players and fans of the Mass Effect franchise can unlock this early access (with no purchase necessary) – this will also be announced in late November or early December.
•There will also be a tool posted on www.masseffect.com allowing players to check if their EA account has been granted the early access.
•The length of the early access period is TBA.
•The single-player section of the demo will be available to all players on day one of the demo launch.
2012 is shaping up to be a massive year for gaming. Mass Effect 3, StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm, BioShock Infinite, Soul Calibur 5 and Final Fantasy XIII-2 are all headed our way in a relatively short period of time, so you’d better finish up your 2011 games fast (Skyrim!).
Are you excited about Mass Effect 3? Will you play the demo, or wait for the full release?

NIS America introduced a brand new title for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. Coming in the form of Clan of Champions, the said title is expected to be a tad different from their well-known trademark of tactical RPG games such as Disgaea.
According to NIS, Clan of Champions is going to be a fantasy action game, bringing in multiplayer components as well. The game will also be featuring three player co-op and three-on-three competitive modes.
Of course, character customization will also be available, letting players pick from classes of human, elf or orc. As with any action game, weapon leveling is also a must, and that, therefore, will also be present.
Clan of Champions is set to be released by Spring 2012 for North America and Europe.
