Because that’s what people want – console MMOs.
Guild Wars 2 is creeping steadily across the horizon, ready to pounce on the F2P MMO crowd at nearly any moment. And while there’s no official release date available for the game, that doesn’t mean NCsoft doesn’t have anything interesting to reveal.
In a conference call early this morning, Guild Wars 2 developers discussed a rough timeframe for the game’s beta and, yes, the possibility of a console port. Before you get too excited, it’s worth noting that the studio merely confirmed there is some sort of Guild Wars 2-related console development taking place – it’s far from a guarantee.
Here’s the exact quote, which you are free to interpret however you want:
“When it comes to Guild Wars 2 [on consoles] as we have announced already, we are in the preparation stage. For other titles we are looking at various options as we speak. So once again, nothing has been finalized yet for me to make specific comments now.”
So there you have it. They’re in the preparation stages, which means the game may or not make it to consoles. If you’re curious about that beta, the studio confirmed that large scale testing will occur in March and April. NCsoft will use the test results and seasonal market trends to determine the final launch schedule.
Are you excited to see Guild Wars 2 finally making forward progress? And what do you think of console MMOs?

The long-delayed sequel to ArenaNet’s popular MMORPG gets another release window and a public beta.
Guild Wars is one of the most popular MMORPGs on the market, selling over six million copies and standing as a shining example of how to run a successful online game without charging a subscription fee. Its sequel, Guild Wars 2, was announced way back in 2007, but has yet to see the light of day.
Fans of the franchise got their first look at Guild Wars 2 back in 2009, and ArenaNet announced that the game would be ready for a 2011 release. Later that year, NCsoft CEO Jaeho Lee pushed the game back to 2011, with a public beta aimed for some time in 2010. Neither came to fruition.
2012 appears, in the words of ArenaNet, to be the year of Guild Wars. Company president Mike O’Brien posted a quick statement on the official ArenaNet blog outlining details of Guild Wars’ development schedule – look for a full release sometime this year, and a public beta starting in March. This beta will expand through the month of April, and fans are encouraged to check in on the official site for further information.
Are you waiting for Guild Wars 2?

Here they come: the very first games of the new year. Find out what’s coming in this week’s “On Shelves.”
Well, the holidays are officially over. New Year’s is just a couple of days away, and its passing marks the end of one of the most incredible years in the history of gaming. 2011 gave us Skyrim, Portal 2, Deus Ex and Bastion, not to mention countless other brilliant games.
2011 is almost behind us now, but we’re still in that dead zone between Christmas and NYE. Which means, unfortunately, that there isn’t much happening in the world of game releases.
Here’s what you can expect to see launching this week:
Guild Wars Complete Collection
PC
ESRB Teen
NCSoft
That’s it. Most gaming companies aren’t in a hurry to release a game during this holiday vacuum, so we won’t be seeing a return to the regular launch schedule until the middle of the month.
In the meantime, this week is an excellent week for catching up on other games, or sinking even more hours into Skyrim.
How are you spending your dead zone week?

Faced with a rapidly dwindling online population, NCSoft tries something drastic to save its gorgeous but misunderstood MMO.
Remember when everyone was saying that Aion would be the game that killed WoW? It’s been a couple of years since Aion hit shelves, and I think we know the results of that “battle” – WoW continued to not care about any other game, and Aion has seen subscriptions steadily dry up as players move on to greener pastures.
In Europe, NCSoft is trying something new in the hopes of preserving Aion and its play quality – the free to play model. Their strategy is based primarily on bringing new players into the game, and hoping old players will return now that there are no monthly fees to worry about. Paid subscriptions will still be available and will offer certain perks to players, but there aren’t many details on what exactly those perks will be.
In the meantime, the company has confirmed that every quest, class, and feature of Aion will be available to free players, with some minor restrictions to protect the game against botters and spammers. There’s no word on whether the F2P model will make its way to the States – right now this is strictly a Europe experiment.
In the meantime, if you play Aion and want to switch to the F2P model, you can do that from your NCSoft account.
Do you know anyone that plays Aion? Are you more likely to play now that the game is free?

The designers promise not to sell anything “evil” for real money, but how does a cash shop impact the in-game economy?
Guild Wars 2, like its predecessor, will always be free-to-play. This simple model has worked well for NCSoft and ArenaNet, with the game holding a passionate fan following in spite of some of the (arguably) more superior MMOs on the market. Giving your players license to play the game without the need for a monthly subscription is a powerful motivator, especially for recruiting new people.
At the recent Eurogamer Expo, ArenaNet confirmed that Guild Wars 2 would remain free-to-play, staying true to the roots of the original. However, Colin Johanson, one of the game’s designers, also confirmed that there would be a cash shop available to players that wish to trade their real-life dollars into in-game items.
Johanson tempered the announcement by promising not to sell any items that enhance your character or make him more powerful than players that opt not to spend their hard earned cash:
"We like to do the - we like to call it the Is it Evil? test. Every micro-transaction that we do in the game, we have everyone in the company look at it and say Is it Evil? Is it really something we should be selling?"
Selling cosmetic items has certainly worked well for World of Warcraft, which has recently legitimized gold buying by offering a tradeable in-game pet for $10 actual moneydollars. If Guild Wars 2 can walk the line between exclusive content and character advantage well, they may find the addition of the store quite profitable with little to no backlash from the player community.
The concept of for-cash item exclusives certainly isn’t new to gaming, but one does have to recognize that it takes away the allure of certain items. When you see a character that has obviously dropped real-life cash on an in-game item, there’s no real sense of envy as compared to how you feel when someone has an exceptionally rare item.
What do you think about cash shop items? Cool bonuses or sneaky cash grabs?

After much struggling, SOE has finally given up the fight for their PS3/ MMO title, The Agency.
On top of this, the company has also confirmed that they will be shutting down three of their studios. Consequently, employees will also be let go.
The three studios officially shutting down are Denver, Seattle and Tucson, with the number of affected staff up at 205. Meanwhile, those who survived the layoffs will be moved transferred to the San Diego studio, reportedly for the Planetside Next, as well as an upcoming Everquest title.
Said SOE's statement: "As part of a strategic decision to reduce costs and streamline its global workforce, SOE announced today that it will eliminate 205 positions and close its Denver, Seattle and Tucson studios.
As part of this restructuring, SOE is discontinuing production of The Agency so it can focus development resources on delivering two new MMOs based on its renowned PlanetSide and EverQuest properties, while also maintaining its current portfolio of online games. All possible steps are being taken to ensure team members affected by the transition are treated with appropriate concern."
He reassures, however, this restructuring will not have any effect on the company's current portfolio of live games.
