Nintendo apparently doesn’t want to risk offending its customers.
Indie Dev Edmund McMillen confirmed via Twitter earlier today that the Nintendo 3DS eShop would officially be declining to host his latest game, The Binding of Isaac. Citing “questionable religious content,” Nintendo has elected to dump the game from its eShop lineup.
Here’s McMillen’s tweet in full:
“Attention: After a long internal debate Nintendo has decided NOT to allow the Binding of Isaac on the 3ds. :(“
He continued, quite hilariously:
“As many assumed the reasons were due to the games "questionable religious content". Thank GOD Steam exists!”
The Binding of Isaac has moved over 450,000 copies on PC, and this silly controversy will likely spur more sales than the game would have gained with a quiet eShop release. Still, it’s an odd decision on the part of Nintendo and a bad precedent to set in terms of censorship.
What do you think of Nintendo’s decision? Should game companies choose which games you can play, or should the choice be left up to the consumer?

Steam isn't losing steam any time soon, but it's most definitely losing all EA games, most likely, in the near future. The latest game to be pulled out from their games library is Dragon Age II.
The game was pulled out by the publisher just after Legacy, its first downloadable expansion was released. Once again, Electronic Arts remains mum as to all this pullout activity ensuing over with Steam, but they remain firm in their claim that they are still hoping to reach an amenable agreement with Valve.
Reiterated SVP of Global E-Commerce, David DeMartini, "At EA, we offer our games and content to all major download services including GameStop, Amazon, Direct2Drive and Steam. Unfortunately, Steam has adopted a set of restrictive terms of service which limit how developers interact with customers to sell downloadable content. No other download service has adopted this practice. Consequently some of our games have been removed by Steam. We hope to work out an agreement to keep our games on Steam."
But although Dragon Age II has been removed, Dragon Age: Origins remains to be included in Steam's library. Last month, it was Crysis 2 that made headlines upon being removed from Steam. Despite what they're saying, I can see it coming, EA will eventually pull out from Steam altogether. It's just a matter of time, really.

EA's keen on expanding its business venture, with its latest project being EA Origins, their new download service. Now, a lot of people can't help but see it as some sort of competition for Valve's Steam. The suspicion rose all the more when Crysis 2 was taken out from the Steam Store.
EA maintains their ground, however, that they are not gearing for a fight. EA's David DeMartini tried to downplay the issue in a recent interview with Gamasutra, saying that, "Obviously when a big publisher comes up with their own application and launches a site where you can buy games directly, people immediately jump up to the conclusion that means they're going to exclude everyone else. "
"We believe in absolute freedom of choice to allow customers to buy through whatever retail outlet... as long as they're buying an EA game, we're delighted. We feel like if you buy the product with Origin, where we're going on a long-term basis is we'll integrate some of the Origin feature set into many of our highest-profile IP... but by all means if your preferred retailer is Best Buy or Direct2Drive or Impulse or Steam or Amazon... we're going to make our product available to you."
To further justify, he concludes with this statement: "I am absolutely not at this point saying, 'hey, it's Origin versus Steam.' It's never been about that."
Sounds like all should be fine and dandy, right? But if you look closely, it sounds rather forced. Take note of that operative "at this point" phrase. But of course they're looking to win over Steam, at least insofar as their catalogue is concerned.
They'll start with their own titles, and then most likely, they'll expand to other services and products. Question is, can they really handle the bull by its horns? The atmosphere of competition definitely is thick in the air. But frankly, one really can't take it against EA if they choose to go this path given that it's about the only course they have if they want EA Origins to take off. What better way to promote your own service but through your own existing brand and products, right?
Nonetheless, Steam remains to be the biggest online distributor in the market today. And while there doesn't seem to be any visible and solid threat from EA Origins, there most certainly is an impending one. With EA's vast catalogue of titles most likely to not be seeing Steam's light of day ever again, they will have to bank on their roster from other publishers still supporting their service.
Despite their denials of an existing competition, though, if you were to take sides, whose would you pick? EA Origins or Steam?

ea-originThe fight is brewing, and no denial from either camp can temper the terse atmosphere.
