Valve could be announcing Steam Box at GDC
What in the hell is Valve doing?
GDC is going on at the moment and I have a few friends checking it out, pitching games and showing off their work but with all the rumours flying around at the San Fran convention, I'd hate  to be a Valve employee right now.
The great big PC developer and probably one of the only game studios who I respect and will follow till they release Half Life 3 and with the idea of making a console, looks like I better start saving up.
Steam Box is the tentative title that everyone is dubbing it on the interwebs but i tlooks like Valve may throw their hat into the console ring and I think that the only way it will sell is if they make Half Life 3 exclusive to PC and their console...it will be the highest selling console ever.
The rumours were fueled that the company have been toying with the idea of creating a proper set-top console that could pose a threat to not only current-gen but next-gen consoles. Valve co-founder recently told the guys at Penny Arcade that if they had to sell hardware, they will. This could easily just have meant Valve branded graphics cards or just some cool memorabilia like keyboards, mice or even headphones but if they make Steam Box...the world of video games may change forever.

The company is waiting for “the right” handheld. Hint: Vita isn’t it.
Naughty Dog, the company behind Uncharted, Crash Bandicoot and the upcoming, ridiculously over-hyped The Last of Us, is probably one of the most well-respected developers in the industry at the moment. The Uncharted series has received mountains of praise, and has served as one of the most purchase-motivating PlayStation exclusives since the days of Final Fantasy.
Now that the PlayStation Vita is officially on shelves (well, almost), people want to know who will be making games for the device, and who won’t. As of this week, you can file Naughty Dog under the “won’t” category. Community manager Arne Meyer has confirmed that the company has no Vita titles in the works, and won’t be entering the portable market until “the right handheld” comes along.
Meyer noted that console development is really Naughty Dog’s wheelhouse, playing to their strengths in pushing the limits of both hardware and the company’s game engines. He also stated that he couldn’t rule out a Vita game completely, but that at the moment, there are no plans for Naughty Dog to bring a game to the system.
Uncharted: Golden Abyss is expected to be one of the biggest Vita launch titles at release, but it was developed by Sony Bend borrowing the license from Naughty Dog.
Naughty Dog is one of Sony’s biggest and most successful developers. Seeing them out of the race on the Vita is certainly strange, especially when you consider that Sony just announced that all of its studios were working on something Vita-related.
Do you think more developers will follow Naughty Dog in passing on Vita development?

Nintendo 3DS titles score the top three slots for 2011 sales.
Japan’s gaming market is very, very different from the one here in the west. Japanese gamers are big fans of portable titles, and they’re not really that into the AAA FPS blockbusters that seem to do so well in the U.S. and in Europe. With that in mind, the 2011 software sales tallies for Japan don’t really come as much of a surprise.
Mario Kart 7 landed firmly in first place, followed by Super Mario 3D Land. In fact, of the top ten games, five were exclusively available on a Nintendo console. The rest of the list belongs to the PlayStation 3, with not one Xbox 360 title breaking into the top ten.
Here’s the full list, courtesy of Edge:
01. Mario Kart 7 (Nintendo, 3DS)
02. Super Mario 3D Land (Nintendo, 3DS)
03. Monster Hunter Tri G (Capcom, 3DS)
04. Final Fantasy Type-0 (Square Enix, PSP)
05. Final Fantasy XIII-2 (Square Enix, PS3)
06. Monster Hunter Portable 3rd (Capcom, PSP)
07. Minna No Rhythm Tengoku (Nintendo, Wii)
08. Tales Of Xillia (Namco Bandai, PS3)
09. Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2 Professional (DS)
10. Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo, Wii)
What’s really amazing about Mario Kart topping the charts for the year is that the game didn’t hit shelves until December 1. That means that every one of the 1.16 million units sold moved in just a rough 30-day period. Not too shabby there, Nintendo. Also interesting is Final Fantasy XIII-2’s presence on the list, despite the fact that the game opened relatively weak and many news outlets lamented it as a failure.
So what do these numbers tell us about the western market? Nothing at all, of course!

Social Game Head: "Vita will die a premature death"
Bossa Studio Head Henrique Olifiers claims there will not be a future for Vita in 2012
Henrique Olifiers and Bossa Studios have been known in the past to make slightly "too honest" claims about the future of gaming. Back in June of this year Bossa called out social games, saying they were 'the lowest common denominator" and that they lose "their creative identity" in the game design process...which is actually quite true, but his recent comments on the Vita may be a bit too honest for some Sony fans liking.
In an interview with Videogamer.com, Olifiers commented on many different things in the gaming industry, such as the unifying nature Valve may bring one day:  "Valve is bang on: proprietary stuff is madness, we should be moving to more open platforms, to interoperability, bringing everyone together,"
And this is where the comment about Vita slowly came into play: "...If this is not the motto for the big console manufacturers, not only will we not be there - they're likely to die a horrible premature death, the kind of which I think the Vita will suffer from."
Olifiers said that the dedicated console market's straight up detraction from the idea of  cross-platform compatibility is holding the medium back. Olifiers claims that without the help of more companies to make sure more people are gaming, that the medium may be doomed to be a "walled garden." Olifier hates the fact you can't play cross-platform and wants to live in  a world  "where people are freely connected," which I think is incredibly positive in the realm of gaming, especially handhelds. However, Olifiers was not totally dismissive of the platform.
When asked if his social gaming studio, Bossa studios, would be making games for the PS Vita, Olifiers said: "We'll keep on the lookout to see what the next gen will bring, but if they want more focus on tech specs rather than usability and accessibility, I don't think it will be for us."  Bossa actually has the recently ex-Sony developer Yoshifusa Hayama, who was once apart of Team Ico.
Whilst I think Henrique may be just stirring the pot, there have been a few problematic things for the Vita, even before the release. The recent news of the Japanese demand being a bit too much for Sony could cause a lot of poorly and quickly made Vita's and the fact that Canada won't have 3G support for some time is another problem, but I guess we'll see when the Vita comes out next year in the Western World.

Bossa Studio Head Henrique Olifiers claims there will not be a future for Vita in 2012 if Sony doesn't take notice of cross-platform gaming.

Find out what your fellow QJers are talking about this week, as drama blooms from all corners.
Indie developers take a shot at Nintendo and Sony, GameStop leaked potential Vita memory card prices and Iran has a serious problem with one of the biggest games of the year. These are among the hottest news posts here on QJ, sparking up intense arguments and polite discussion from readers.
If you’re just sitting down for your Saturday reading, we’ve compiled five of the biggest stories from the week right here so you can get up to speed post-haste. Also, as is now Saturday tradition, I’ll be awarding one lucky/unlucky QJ reader the prestigious “Comment of the Week” award.
Without further ado, here’s your:
Should Nintendo and Sony Stop Making Consoles?
Indie and mobile developer Andy Payne thinks that Nintendo and Sony are limiting themselves by making their own hardware and developing software with exclusivity. His recommendation is that they stop worrying about hardware and focus entirely on software, distributing to mobile markets. What do you think?
Iran Bans Battlefield 3
The Iranian government is not pleased with the way Iran was treated in Battlefield 3, to the point of banning the game from sale in their country. The game’s primary offender? A staged attack by U.S. forces against Iran’s capital city of Tehran. There are two sides to this argument – you could argue that Iran is overreacting to a video game, but you could also argue that they’re justified in objecting to the content. Where do you land on this one?
Where and When Should the Next Assassin’s Creed Go?
We know Ubisoft is planning another Assassin’s Creed game, and it looks like they’re turning to their players for advice on where to set it. A leaked survey to fans of the franchise lists several possible locations, including the Victorian British Empire, Medieval China, and even the American Revolution. You can see the full list on the post and add your favorite location in the comments.
PlayStation Vita Memory Cards are Pricey
This is by far the most-commented story of the week – GameStop, using rough Yen conversions, posted prices for the proprietary memory cards that will be available for Sony’s Vita handheld, and gamers are not pleased with the cost. The smallest card, at 4GB, runs $29.99 – a far cry from what similarly sized non-Sony memory cards cost nowadays. Of course, Yen conversion is tricky, so we’ll have to wait on an official Sony announcement before throwing too big a hissy fit.
What is Your Game of the Year?
In this post, QJ writer Tim Curtain poses the question on everyone’s mind: What exactly is the best game of the year. With huge titles like Skyrim, Portal 2 and Skyward Sword on the list, it’s going to be hard for anyone to truly nail down a winner. Dark Souls is making a strong appearance in the comments section, as is Portal 2 – what game would you call the best if you had the chance?
Those are your five most talked about QJ posts for the week. And now it’s time for that very special Saturday ritual – the awarding of Comment of the Week. This week’s award goes to triac for his comment on Skyrim Patch Breaks More than it Fixes:
The CG machine is broken again!

Dino Patti, head of Playdead Games, says that the current method for marketing and selling games is broken, and has been for quite some time.
Limbo was one of the bigger hits for Xbox’s Live Arcade, PC and PSN in 2010. If you played it at all, you probably still remember some of its haunting imagery – it was just that effective at creating a mood. Now the guy in charge of Limbo’s development company, Playdead Games, is offering his opinion on why direct downloads work, and why the current retail model doesn’t.
Patti’s main thrust appears to be that delivering games via disc just doesn’t make much sense in a world where most gamers can simply download whatever they want from the web. It’s a familiar argument, though Patti does have a bit more experience with digital downloads than most.
Here’s what he had to say:
“"Driving discs in a big van all over the world is really inefficient. I don't understand how anyone can make money out of this. Driving a truck to Japan just to get it delivered to people when they can get it from the net? Hopefully the new consoles will embrace the download space even more."”
Of course, it’s worth noting that Limbo is a tiny, tiny game compared to AAA titles like Skyrim or Battlefield 3. Downloading a 117 MB game is a lot different than downloading a 6 GB game, especially when you consider that here in the states, out of 307 million people, only around 67 million have access to broadband services.
Sony Computer Entertainment’s Kaz Hirai summed up this counterpoint nicely:
“"We do business in parts of the world where network infrastructure isn't as robust as one would hope. There's always going to be requirement for a business of our size and scope to have a physical medium. To think everything will be downloaded in two years, three years or even ten years from now is taking it a little bit to the extreme."
I think we’re headed towards an all-digital world, but it can’t happen until global broadband coverage improves and the cost of console hard drives goes way, way down. Hell, I still have a 20gig drive on my Xbox – just try getting me to download a game.
Which opinion do you think is more accurate for the near-future of gaming?

Rockstar announces the 10th anniversary edition of its old-school classic, remastered and headed directly to your mobile phone.
It’s hard to imagine, but Grand Theft Auto III, the game generally recognized as revolutionizing what game developers could do with an open world, has been out for 10 years. For a bit of perspective, the number one song in 2001 was Independent Women Part 1, by Destiny’s Child. Beyoncé was still a person in a band when GTAIII hit shelves.
Anyway, this post isn’t about Beyoncé. It’s about Rockstar’s most recent announcement – in celebration of the tenth anniversary of GTAIII, they’re releasing the game not to consoles or direct download, but directly to mobile platforms.
Here’s the currently supported device lineup:
Apple iOS Devices: iPad 2, iPhone 4S
Android Phones: Droid X2, HTC Evo 2, LG Optimus 2X, Motorola Atrix, Samsung Galaxy S2
Android Tablets: Acer Iconia, Asus Eee Pad, Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
Rockstar notes that this list isn’t complete, and they’ll be releasing a more in-depth list of compatible devices once they’re a little closer to dropping the game on the open market. If you happen to be going to New York Comic Con, you can give the game a test run at the Rockstar booth.
Everyone else will just need to wait until later this fall; there’s no official release but it’s safe to say we’ll see  GTAIII on our iPads sometime during the holiday season.
I’m just amazed at how far we’ve come technology-wise. I remember being amazed at the freedom that game created, and it’s incredible to think that I could have the same experience on a device that fits in my pocket.
Anyone planning on downloading GTAIII to their mobile device, or are you sticking to consoles?

After a brief, vague delay, Sony’s new FPS title gets a brand-new release date and may be headed to PSN sooner than you think.
If you’re one of the PS3 owners eagerly awaiting the release of Payday: The Heist, Sony has some good news for you this morning. Though the game suffered a strange delay earlier in the month, it looks like it was only minor – look for The Heist to be available on PSN as of October 18Th.
If you’ve already pre-ordered the game, you don’t need to do anything; the game will automatically download to your console on the 18th. If you haven’t, you can pick it up from the PSN store for $19.99. The PC version is still hanging in the wind, though it’s obvious we won’t be seeing it any time soon.
Payday: The Heist is designed to be played with another player; it’s a first-person-cooperative shooter. At launch, you can expect at least six different missions with more to come in the form of DLC later on down the line. I’ll let the game’s website describe what you’ll see in the game:
“As an intense, gritty and unapologetic episodic co-operative shooter, PAYDAY is packed with cocky attitude, epic Hollywood-inspired action and endless replayability. With six action-packed heists to complete at launch, players embark on a spectacular crime tour of heists, including shooting their way through a downtown bank vault robbery, trading hostages in an armored car hijacking and even a moonlit infiltration of a high-security headquarters.”
Sounds cool to me. Is anyone out there planning on playing this game, or is your October schedule already full?

Nintendo only has two big titles planned for the remainder of the year, and with Wii U on the horizon, many gamers are curious if this is the Wii’s final stand.
When Nintendo announced the Wii console, the big boys scoffed. Sony and Microsoft both believed that motion gaming would be forever relegated to a niche market, and that hardcore gamers would stay with their relatively hardcore consoles. Five years later, both companies have motion-based products on the market and still fall far below the total unit sales for Nintendo’s “casual” system – a pretty clear indicator that Nintendo, as usual, was ahead of the curve.
Now it seems like the time of the Wii is winding down. The Wii U is expected to hit shelves sometime next year and there doesn’t seem to be much for Wii owners to look forward to. A new Kirby title launches this month, followed by what could be the most eagerly anticipated title on the console: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword on November 20th.
As far as I can tell, Zelda is the last big game headed to Wii; certainly the last big game developed by Nintendo. There are rumors of a potential Skyrim port and some of the big multi-platform titles are still getting to the system one way or another, but the rest of the release calendar for this year and next looks pretty bleak for Nintendo fans, with not one major franchise making a return to the system before the Wii U launches.
From where I sit, it’s pretty clear that Nintendo has opted to leave the system with a bang, dropping a massive Zelda title which will surely be well-reviewed and financially successful, then moving on to focus exclusively on Wii U development. They’ve also likely got their sights on improving the market share of the 3DS, so it’s questionable how much time they may have to focus on keeping their previous console alive.
What do you think? Is this holiday season the Wii’s last gasp, or does Nintendo still have a few tricks up its sleeve?

It took them the PSP Go to finally make a hardline stance on the matter, but now Sony has seen the light and is insisting that now is not the time for a download-only console.
Said Shuhei Yoshida, Sony Worldwide Studios boss, "We believe, for some consumers, the time is [right], but for other consumers, the time is still not [right]. So we believe the time is still not right to go download-only as a platform."
What could be the deciding factor as to why they are siding with those consumers who not ready for a download-only approach in gaming? It's simple: broadband internet. "Some PS Vita titles, like Uncharted: Golden Abyss, will be close to 4GB in size, which could be too large to download for consumers who do not have a fast broadband connection." But apart from this, "Some consumers like shopping in retail stores, talking to knowledgeable store clerks, buying and playing games on the spot. We do not want to remove that capability from consumers."
SCEE's Jim Ryan concurs, saying that, "There are consumers in parts of the world - this is a global device - where the digital model has not yet fully been embraced." And it's true, really. In fact, in a study recently concluded, not even the US or UK are in the forerunners of downloading speed. And mind you, everyone gets just a tad bit -- okay, that's not true, a whole LOT -- more impatient when it comes to downloading their stuff on the Internet. What more if it's a game that you've been waiting for eons to come?
Nobody would want to sit around several hours just waiting for the download to finish, on top of the full year (at a minimum) that you've already spent just waiting in anticipation for the game to hit retail.
I would have to agree with Sony on this one. The global infrastructure for a hi-speed connection just isn't all that well set yet. Of course, as a business, they'll have to take into top consideration as well what their other consumers' capacity for enjoying their products are going to be.
The failure of the PSP Go most definitely made this impact on them. Releasing the system without the UMD was a misstep on their part, which they immediately realized when it went dead cold on store shelves just months after its launch. And then they atoned for it by coming up with the PlayStation Vita.
Not to say that a download-only console will be nay possible in the future, but as for now, am fine with my physical media as it is. There's someting fairly comforting having it in the palm of my hands.

It took them the PSP Go to finally make a hardline stance on the matter, but now Sony has seen the light and is insisting that now is not the time for a download-only console.

If the number of downloads for Ace Combat on both the PSN and XBL would be any indication, then the flight-fighter game is in good shape for its release next week.
Namco Bandai has released the information that the demo for Ace Combat: Assault Horizon hit the 1.2 million mark in downloads since its release last month. The demo featured two missions, coupled with jets and helicopters to further fuel the experience.
The aerial dogfighting series will not only be keeping busy with the consoles, but also on the handhelds, with it also heading to the Nintendo 3DS. That should  provide for yet another option for you if in case the console versions and the Limited Edition do not cut it.
Ace Combat: Assault Horizon comes out in Japan next week, October 13th, for both the PS3 and Xbox 360.

So, remember when Microsoft went on a banning spree over at the Xbox Live last week? They were pretty much secretive about the whole "Marketplace Theft" issue.
Apparently, though, it appears that one particular DLC is the root cause of all this drama. As reports would have it, a glitch present in the Rezurrection DLC for Call of Duty: Black Ops is the one causing all the trouble for the gamers. What happens is that the glitch flags their Xbox 360 units as being stolen. The consequence for this is that the XBL account attached to the unit thereby gets banned.
The glitch seems to be pretty random, and so it doesn't really matter whether or not your unit is indeed stolen. Those banned were only so unfortunate as to download the game's add-on, and thereby is burdened with the banning consequence.
To make things more frustrating, Microsoft apparently wants to keep things under wraps until they are able to figure out a way to deal with the issue. This is rather surprising considering how swiftly and transparently they dealt with the previous security issue on their system. I just hope that this media blackout won't be for too long because really, the consumers are obviously on the losing end of this whole brouhaha. Meanwhile, if this be true, Activision should say something about the matter as well.
The CoD: Black Ops Rezurrection Pack came out for both the XBL and PSN back in September 23rd. The bannings commenced shortly after that for XBL subscribers.
