Hardcore shooters like Quake and Unreal Tournament don’t translate well when ported to consoles.
If you played first-person shooters on your PC in the 90s, you probably remember the hectic, chaotic gameplay they usually featured. In the old days, the only thing that dictated your ability to succeed in a PC shooter was the speed of your wrist. However, twitchy shooters seem to have faded out, replaced by the cover-laden frag fests to which we have all become accustomed.
Tribes Ascend executive producer Todd Harris says the problem isn’t with developers or the evolving tastes of gamers, but with creating multiplatform games. He claims that since shooters have to be simultaneously released on PC and console platforms, it’s much harder for developers to build a quick reflex, twitchy title.
He noted that console controllers dramatically limit the speed at which action can take place, since sensitivity can only go so high before the game becomes impossible to play. He also claimed that developers probably could make a twitchy game for consoles, but it’s easier to aim for the “lowest common denominator” and make tactical shooters instead of the twitchy kind.
Tribes Ascend is currently in closed beta, but will hit digital shelves sometime this spring. Expect the game to demand twitchy, reflexive gameplay—just like the shooters of old.
Unless, of course, it gets ported to PS3 or Xbox.

There’s no limit to which a parent will not go to quiet a screaming child.
Skylanders is a full-fledged phenomenon, with Activision confirming that the game/toy hybrid generated more revenue in 2011 than any other new children’s IP. And where there is a phenomenon, there’s a chance for eBay users to cash in. Similar to the past run we’ve seen on toys like Furbies and Beanie Babies, Skylanders toys are fetching ridiculous sums on the auction website.
Check out this eBay page and you’ll see what I’m talking about. Rare characters from New York’s Toy Fair are selling for just around $300.00, which is strange because the toys don’t appear to be all that rare. While it’s not uncommon for rare variants of pretty much anything to land a high price on eBay, one has to wonder at who is actually purchasing these Skylanders. Is it collectors or parents with kids to please?
The Skylanders hype doesn’t seem like it’s going to die down anytime soon, with Activision announcing another line-up of characters and toys due in 2012. Perhaps there’s an opportunity in there for collectors willing to wait in midnight lines and stockpile figures. There’s definitely a market for convention-specific items, if you don’t mind attending a toy fair.
Would you pay $300 for a rare variant of something you already own? What is it about little pieces of plastic that sends collectors into a frenzy?

A young documentarian explores the depths of game addiction in a student film.
We’re all avid gamers. I think that’s safe to say, since we’re all here either writing or reading about games. However, there’s a thin line between being passionate about a subject and being completely obsessed. Game addiction is a very real problem for thousands, if not millions of people. In my days of WoW raiding, it wasn’t uncommon to hear stories of abandoned wives, lost jobs and other nasty consequences of being unable to pull oneself away from the screen.
Anthony Rosner, a third-year student at University of Central Arkansas, decided to plunge headlong into the world of game addiction with his short film, IRL. The movie focuses on World of Warcraft, but gamers of all varieties will likely find something with which to identify.
If you have about ten minutes to kill, the movie is definitely worth a look:
If anything, IRL provides us with an opportunity to discuss the perils of game addiction. When do you think passion crosses over into addiction? Have you ever had to forcefully pull yourself or a friend out of a game?
Let us know in the comments.

Blizzard is tweaking their dungeon-crawling opus in response to beta user feedback.
Diablo III’s beta has been trucking steadily along, and while we did receive a bit of a tip in the form of a leaked release date, news has been relatively scarce. Essentially, we know that the beta is in progress and that the game is set for release sometime this year – there haven’t been any big bombshells.
Today’s news marks the biggest tidbit we’ve gotten on the subject. Diablo’s director, Jay Wilson, made a statement on the official Diablo blog that the Blizzard team would be tweaking some of the in-game systems thanks to player feedback. Here’s a list of some of the changes mentioned:
Removal of Scrolls of Identification
Removal of Cauldron of Jordan
Removal of Nephalem Cubes
Adjustment of core character stats
Common items are no longer salvageable
Blacksmiths can now salvage items
Addition of a dedicated potions button
Removal of Mystic artisan
You can view the full details of Diablo III’s upcoming updates by following the source link at the bottom of this post. It looks like Blizzard is doing some serious work on the game’s mechanics; hopefully this won’t have an effect on the final release date.
Have you been playing the Diablo III beta? What are your thoughts?

Games like Skyrim are harsh reminders that our gaming time is not infinite – have you ever left a game behind?
Amazing games are, strangely enough, few and far between. In any given year, we usually end up with three or four exceptional games, about a dozen serviceable ones and then a huge pile of crap. But even though the truly great games are limited in supply, it’s difficult to find the time to play them all to completion.
Take Skyrim, for example. By all accounts, Skyrim is one of the best games of the year. However, its ridiculously large 300+ hour experience is simply beyond the time the average gamer has to invest, and many will leave the game’s world with their missions unfinished. It’s not uncommon to walk away from a game, even when it’s a good one.
So in today’s Sound Off, we’d like to know which amazing games you’ve played that you never managed to finish. Games that you enjoyed, but just couldn’t find the time for. They’re out there, and we want to hear about it.
I’ll start – Red Dead Redemption. I’m not normally into Rockstar titles, but I found the natural open world of Red Dead alluring, and the characters interesting. I loved every minute I spent in that game, but for some reason just never found a way to finish it as new games hit shelves. It’s still sitting next to my Xbox, and even though I know it’s very good, I just haven’t had an interest in completing it.
What about you? What great games have you left hanging?

Icon Games reports that Nintendo forced them to remove Wii-related sales data from their company blog.
It’s not uncommon for indie studios to post sales numbers for their games. Sales figures demonstrate how their game is moving, and help generate a little extra press. But one developer is claiming that Nintendo didn’t take kindly to their efforts to publish WiiWare sales figures.
Icon Games, the London studio behind barroom games like Arcade Pool and Arcade Darts, had listed its cross-platform sales on a public blog – including data for Nintendo’s WiiWare store. Unfortunately for Icon, Nintendo apparently contacted them and requested that the information be removed.
The claims were made in another official company blog, in which Icon questions Nintendo’s reasoning for removing the numbers and claims that disallowing public sales data makes it harder for them to run an effective business. While this may be a stretch, it is a bit puzzling as to why Nintendo wouldn’t want developers sharing sales numbers.
As for Icon’s posts, it’s a rambling mess that manages to posit that Nintendo’s refusal to allow the publication of sales figures would somehow prevent a developer from securing a small business loan, or stop them from being able to accurately plan their financial future.
Honestly, both sides of this argument look ridiculous. Nintendo should allow people to publicly share sales figures, and Icon should stop pretending like the inability to publish numbers on a blog is the same thing as not being able to see them. Surely they don’t bring screencaps of their blog to the bank to convince the bank of Icon’s financial solvency.

Video games used to be the domain of the nerdy basement dweller. Now, they’re changing the way in which we interact with friends, family and strangers.
Last night, I went to a wonderful pizzeria in Chicago to celebrate a friend’s birthday. Drinks were had and merriment was made, and at some point during the night conversation turned to Skyrim. One of my friends was curious about the game, and wanted me to explain the basic gist of how it works. As I was explaining the game, someone at the next table over exclaimed “Are you talking about Skyrim?!” We confirmed, and the guy immediately abandoned his girlfriend to join our table so he could tell us about how awesome his one-hander wielding Spellsword was working out.
It was a strange moment – despite not knowing the guy (or his poor girlfriend), we instantly had a shared experience from which to draw. Our digital adventures in Skyrim translated into a real-life connection, and thanks to that game, we all made a new friend. This type of gaming bleed is becoming increasingly common; it seems like everywhere you go, you run into another fan of games with something to say.
Gaming used to be derided as a hobby for nerds and loners. But huge MMOs are changing the way in which we hang out with distant family and friends, and big-budget titles are giving us a way to interact with strangers we never imagined possible. It’s an incredible experience to connect with a random person, and games are quickly becoming one of the most common ways to do so. How many of us have never thrown a subtle nod to someone wearing a Horde shirt, or a Cog hat?
As gaming continues to spread into the mainstream, these types of interactions will happen much more often. And, frankly, we’re all better off for it. Sometimes the most valuable experience gaming can bring us is something that happens in real life as a result of our shared passions. As gamers, our passions often get the best of us, but every now and then, they translate to something truly awesome.
Have you ever connected with a random person due to a love of gaming? Tell us your story in the comments!

Want to dodge super-long queue times for Bioware’s massively popular MMO? Watch out for these crowded servers.
It’s not uncommon for a new MMO to suffer from long queue times and crushing server loads, and a game with the sheer hype force of Star Wars: The Old Republic is likely going to be subject to more than average stress. Thanks to the incredible influx of new players since the game’s launch on December 20, Bioware has had to open up new servers and is slowly increasing population caps on some of the ones they already had in place.
They’ve also released a list of servers that are currently packed to capacity. They’re not blocking character creation because they want people to have the opportunity to play with friends, but they’re strongly advising against joining the following servers:
• The Harbinger -- US West Coast - PvE
• The Swiftsure -- US West Coast - PvP
• The Fatman -- US East Coast - PvP
• Bloodworthy -- EU English - PvP
• Frostclaw -- EU English - PvE
• Legions of Lettow -- EU English - PvP
• The Red Eclipse -- EU English - PvE
• Tomb of Freedom Nadd -- EU English - PvP
• Darth Revan's Mask -- EU German - PvP
• Darth Traya -- EU German - PvP
• Jar'Kai Sword -- EU German - PvP
• Hrakert Rift -- EU French - PvP
You’re still free to join one, of course – you’d just better be prepared for a ridiculous queue time. Things will naturally slow down once the holiday break ends and everyone’s hit a more regular play schedule, but for now, it may be best to stick with a less-crowded server unless you have a specific reason to join a crowded one.
What is your opinion of the way Bioware has been handling the SWTOR launch?

The new “Metro” dashboard update is causing a few problems for streaming video, problems Microsoft apparently knew about before launch.
Software launches are always hit and miss. Some features end up working just as planned, and others end up breaking or completely disabling your system. Win some, lose some. However, in most cases, the bad things that come with a software update are unexpected problems a developer must race to fix – not well known bugs that have been reported time and time again by your beta community.
This is exactly the case when it comes to the new Microsoft Xbox dashboard. The latest update, titled “Metro,” added all sorts of interesting features to the Xbox dash. It also, however, seems to have had a negative impact on the way videos appear on your screen. While not hugely different from the original dashboard video playback system, whatever Metro uses to show video is washing out colors and making videos look a little less vibrant.
The issue was reported several times by the beta testing community that had early access to the Metro dashboard, and Microsoft’s response was apparently, “Yeah, we’ll get right on that.” The video playback issue is especially strange when you consider that Metro is billed as the Xbox’s huge multimedia update, and it’s very annoying that they’d run a beta then ignore the feedback of their testers.
Overall, feedback for Metro has been mixed. Personally, I like some of it, and hate other parts. The Netflix update, for example, is pure garbage. But I like the revisions to the main screen; they make it easier for me to push through my most commonly used applications (read: Battlefield 3, Netflix).
Have you had any issues with Metro? What are your thoughts on the new dashboard?

Now that the Vita is actually out, some of Sony’s closely guarded secrets are becoming public knowledge.
When you’re about to launch a brand new piece of hardware to a mostly unconvinced public, you have to control every detail of what that public sees before the device hits shelves. The basic idea is simple: ensure that everyone who touches your device has the best experience possible, and doesn’t have enough time to hit any of the snags or bugs you’re trying to get worked out. Sony was very careful about making the Vita available for reviews and previews, but now that the device has hit shelves, some of the things the company failed to announce are hitting the web.
For example, the Vita cannot charge via USB. Though the device includes a proprietary USB cable for transferring data to and from the PS3, if you want to charge the device you’ll have to connect it to a wall outlet. Obviously, this isn’t a huge problem, but it could put a damper on your experiences when it comes to inter-device connectivity.
News is also breaking across the web that many Japanese customers are experiencing problems with their Vita, with the most commonly reported problem being unresponsive touchscreens and full system crashes. Additionally, we’re seeing intermittent reports of the screen completely failing, but it’s tough to get a bead on how widespread the issue may be. You can see an example in the image attached to this post, but without numbers it’s hard to tell if this is a big deal or not. Some systems are bound to fail, regardless of the product quality.
New hardware is always tough to nail down, so it’s expected that Vita will have a few problems. We’ll keep you posted as more information rolls in – for the most part the system seems to be doing relatively well, though it hasn’t sold out in Japan quite yet. Memory cards, on the other hand, are selling like hotcakes.

Surprise! Lots of people want to play Star Wars: The Old Republic, and the game’s developer is working around the clock to accommodate the sudden crush of new users.
According to the clock on my wall, Star Wars: The Old Republic still has about 12 hours before being officially released to the public. But early access and a few other interesting events have brought about a million players into the MMORPG’s digital world, and even though the game isn’t even on shelves yet, its servers are struggling to match demand.
As early access went online, there were 140 servers available on which to play. Now that queues on most have surpassed two hours during peak hours, Bioware is racing to add more capacity to the game before the massive wave of new players hits tomorrow. It’s not uncommon for new MMOs to be saddled with queue times – I remember waiting in line when I first started playing World of Warcraft – but there is certainly a point at which players will refuse to wait. Personally, I think anything over 30 minutes is enough to send players running.
Star Wars: The Old Republic stands to be one of the biggest launches of the year and one of the most impressively attended MMOs since WoW, so it’s up to Bioware to make that experience pleasurable for new players. If people are still on the fence about whether or not they’re going to move their guild to a new game, a two-hour queue certainly isn’t going to help sell SWTOR to them.
As noted, SWTOR already has a million players, and will likely see an increase of at least 500,000 in its first week of launch. EA and Bioware are hoping to land two million paying players in 2013, so hopefully they’ll be on the ball when it comes to balancing out the servers.
Are you in the early access program? What have your experiences been like so far?

Social Game Head: "Vita will die a premature death"
Bossa Studio Head Henrique Olifiers claims there will not be a future for Vita in 2012
Henrique Olifiers and Bossa Studios have been known in the past to make slightly "too honest" claims about the future of gaming. Back in June of this year Bossa called out social games, saying they were 'the lowest common denominator" and that they lose "their creative identity" in the game design process...which is actually quite true, but his recent comments on the Vita may be a bit too honest for some Sony fans liking.
In an interview with Videogamer.com, Olifiers commented on many different things in the gaming industry, such as the unifying nature Valve may bring one day:  "Valve is bang on: proprietary stuff is madness, we should be moving to more open platforms, to interoperability, bringing everyone together,"
And this is where the comment about Vita slowly came into play: "...If this is not the motto for the big console manufacturers, not only will we not be there - they're likely to die a horrible premature death, the kind of which I think the Vita will suffer from."
Olifiers said that the dedicated console market's straight up detraction from the idea of  cross-platform compatibility is holding the medium back. Olifiers claims that without the help of more companies to make sure more people are gaming, that the medium may be doomed to be a "walled garden." Olifier hates the fact you can't play cross-platform and wants to live in  a world  "where people are freely connected," which I think is incredibly positive in the realm of gaming, especially handhelds. However, Olifiers was not totally dismissive of the platform.
When asked if his social gaming studio, Bossa studios, would be making games for the PS Vita, Olifiers said: "We'll keep on the lookout to see what the next gen will bring, but if they want more focus on tech specs rather than usability and accessibility, I don't think it will be for us."  Bossa actually has the recently ex-Sony developer Yoshifusa Hayama, who was once apart of Team Ico.
Whilst I think Henrique may be just stirring the pot, there have been a few problematic things for the Vita, even before the release. The recent news of the Japanese demand being a bit too much for Sony could cause a lot of poorly and quickly made Vita's and the fact that Canada won't have 3G support for some time is another problem, but I guess we'll see when the Vita comes out next year in the Western World.

Bossa Studio Head Henrique Olifiers claims there will not be a future for Vita in 2012 if Sony doesn't take notice of cross-platform gaming.
