The DIRT series gets a new upgrade in this trailer for Dirt Showdown

The Dirt Series expaned from the Colin McCrae Universe of games such as GRID, to become a racing series in it's own right. The latest iteration, Dirt Showdown will recall you back to the good old days of Destruction Derby where cars were just the new generation of battering ram in the world of racing.

The game looks really good, if all things were judged on their trailers. Starting off with the classic motif of a car doing a burnout to show that things were going around in circles with the series - before storming off into the battlefield where hundreds of cars lay in wait for our competitor. The explosions and cheers ring out as the first hit is made and there we have a new franchise born.

I loved playing Destruction Derby 2 back in the day on the old PS1. The game was a mix of NASCAR and Twisted Metal, just without the characters or macarbe insanity. The game series kind of faded out by the PS2 era but maybe it's time for Sony to bring it back. I'm a bit of a fan of the DIRT and GRID series so I might pick this one up too.

Guild Wars 2 to Have Cash Shop

The designers promise not to sell anything “evil” for real money, but how does a cash shop impact the in-game economy?

Guild Wars 2, like its predecessor, will always be free-to-play. This simple model has worked well for NCSoft and ArenaNet, with the game holding a passionate fan following in spite of some of the (arguably) more superior MMOs on the market. Giving your players license to play the game without the need for a monthly subscription is a powerful motivator, especially for recruiting new people.

At the recent Eurogamer Expo, ArenaNet confirmed that Guild Wars 2 would remain free-to-play, staying true to the roots of the original. However, Colin Johanson, one of the game’s designers, also confirmed that there would be a cash shop available to players that wish to trade their real-life dollars into in-game items.

Johanson tempered the announcement by promising not to sell any items that enhance your character or make him more powerful than players that opt not to spend their hard earned cash:

"We like to do the - we like to call it the Is it Evil? test. Every micro-transaction that we do in the game, we have everyone in the company look at it and say Is it Evil? Is it really something we should be selling?"

Selling cosmetic items has certainly worked well for World of Warcraft, which has recently legitimized gold buying by offering a tradeable in-game pet for $10 actual moneydollars. If Guild Wars 2 can walk the line between exclusive content and character advantage well, they may find the addition of the store quite profitable with little to no backlash from the player community.

The concept of for-cash item exclusives certainly isn’t new to gaming, but one does have to recognize that it takes away the allure of certain items. When you see a character that has obviously dropped real-life cash on an in-game item, there’s no real sense of envy as compared to how you feel when someone has an exceptionally rare item.

Analyst: US$20B growth for video game industry in 2014, new PS in development already

Robert W. Baird & Co., an analyst firm, recently published a report, which indicates their expectation of the video game industry to experience further growth by 2014.

By how much, you ask? By an additional US$ 20 billion from where it stands today, potentially reaching above US$ 80 billion. That's a lot of money, and if based on that alone, then it looks like the industry is going to be in for a good run in the next couple of years.

The online aspect of gaming will further prove to be a force to be reckoned with, having downloadable content, social network games, and mobile releases being named as the biggest contributors in the years to come.

Said Colin Sebastian of Baird & Co, "Unlike newspapers, magazines, TV and radio, video game sales have accelerated since the advent of online and mobile platforms. And yes, we believe another video game is likely, with Sony already in development on a next-generation PlayStation."

Yes, he did say that. A new PlayStation is already in the works. All in all, this report spells nothing but good news to gamers all over. Hopefully, though, this increase in revenue for the industry will also mean improvement in the products that the companies will send out.

DiRT 3 launch to be hindered by PSN outage?

Codemasters' DiRT 3 is set to come out this week, but will fans really be able to enjoy it?

As you may very well know, DiRT 3 is scheduled to come out in a mere couple of days. Because the PSN is yet to be fully restored, however, there is the big possibility - and in fact, it's already being expected - that the game won't be fully functional come launch, because it will of course be missing its online components.

The PS3 retail version of the game will be having the VIP pass code, which can only be redeemed through the PSN Shop. Thing is, PSN Shop is still down, and so not only will the gamers be unable to play the online modes of DiRT 3, they will also be unable to redeem their custom vehicles, or even just to upload their gameplays up on YouTube.

There might be a miracle, though. After all, DiRT 3 won't be out till May 24th. Maybe something will happen before then, and thus fully restore PSN back online.

Codemasters' DiRT 3 is set to come out this week, but will fans really be able to enjoy it?
