Despite an ongoing rivalry, EA has nothing but positive remarks for the “games as services” philosophy Activision has adapted.
Call of Duty Elite is a premium subscription service that launched with Modern Warfare 3. The service comes with a few perks, such as future DLC packs and advanced clan support. And while many gamers lamented CoD Elite as yet another cash grab, Electronic Arts sees it as an opportunity in the making.
In an earnings call with investors this morning, EA CEO John Riccitiello fired off a quick compliment to Activision, EA’s primary competition in the FPS market. He noted that adding a subscription to an FPS game (MW3) was a “best-in-class performance,” and that EA would be looking for similar ways to further monetize its franchises. Battlefield Elite, anyone?
The “games as services” movement is picking up steam, with companies like Activision leading the charge. Publishers are on the hunt for any method of expanding revenue, and the massive success of CoD Elite has gone a long way towards proving that the subscription model works.
What do you think? Would you pay for a CoD Elite-type service on Battlefield or Mass Effect 3?

Call of Duty locking DLC to ELite accounts
More Elite features include flipping the bird to consumers and making tonnes off money by being crazy
So Modern Warfare 3 made over a billion dollars last year and whilst Activision is tight lipped on how much has been made from their Elite service so far. The first two maps for MW3 have been released and the next few already teased but many CoD players have discovered a recent change in the DLC policy. This would have people shelling out more money for their maps but other profiles on the system will be unable to get their content without a second or separate Elite membership.
On the Call of Duty forums, there were 8 pages worth on a single thread of upset players who had their friends and family accounts discontinued or altered with no new maps because they didn't have a secondary account. What's even worse is that the new policy doesn't really work with the terms of services you encounter when you first download the content, which rather plainly states on the loading screen that: "You can use this item on the first Xbox 360 console you downloaded it to. Access to this item will also be granted to all users on this first console."
What would usually happen is that DLC on the 360 would be user agnostic and while your purchase (or any redownloads of purchased items) would be tied to your account, any XBLA games or in-game DLC would be on your HD and playable by any account on the 360, which you own. Microsoft's own digital ownership scheme, mimics real life ownership, so as long as someone has access to the content, you can let someone borrow it from you and play it on their own account.
However, with the CoD Elite service, you cannot do so and require your own user account to access the maps and DLC. For example, a single copy of the game could set you back several $50 a year per account to play on.
Whilst Activision is yet to make a comment on it, I'm sure the more "financially savvy" (See: Greedy) companies will probably adopt this system to make sure each user or member of a console will fork out a piece of dough to make sure they make up for the "lost millions" from pirates.
Not sure how many Call of Duty fans there are on this site, but I'm sure that more often than not there are criticism's spread far and wide about their handling of their Elite service as well as their user base. I do like Call of Duty in theory and in some aspects.
I think if the Black Ops zombie game was just a downloadable title I would buy that and every bit of DLC in existance, but alas we are burdened by terrible storylines, unrelatable characters and some insane visuals. They're not terrible games but their effect on the industry (see: BF3, Medal of Honor, etc.) can bar none see them as a culprit.

Gamer scores 144 kills and 4 deaths in one MW3 match, and in the process demonstrates one of the game’s biggest problems.
Look, it’s 2012. Spawn trapping – the act of locking an opposing team into one spawn area and mercilessly camping them – simply shouldn’t be possible in games anymore. Developers, by now, should know how to circumvent this problem. However, the issue seems to have slipped the mind of devs over at Infinity Ward, as evidenced by this video:
In the clip, one MW3 player, with the help of his team, manages to summon a M.O.A.B. in just 48 seconds by peeking over a wall into the enemy spawn and absolutely wrecking the other team as they respawn helplessly. It’s a cheap tactic from any point of view, but the real amazing thing is that it’s even possible in a game that supposed to be one of the best shooters ever made.
This problem is rampant in certain MW3 game modes, and the developers are going to need to find some way to repair it if they want to keep the community happy and engaged. The players in the video aren’t necessarily cheating, so the only recourse is to prevent the problem from happening in the first place.
What do you think should be done to stop matches like this from taking place?

Did you guys know that people like Call of Duty games? Because Activision is reporting huge profits for the latest entry in the series.
Okay, I promise this is the last news post about how much money Modern Warfare is making. Honestly, I wasn’t even going to post it, but it’s just such a big deal there’s really no way to avoid it.
Activision has reported that Modern Warfare 3 has raked in an astonishing $1 billion in its first 16 days of launch. That’s faster than Avatar, which took 17 days to break a billion after it was released in 2010. The published has also reported that there are over 30 million people playing one version of Call of Duty or the other, making it one of the biggest gaming communities in the world.
As the publisher notes, the CoD community is now larger than the populations of New York, Paris, Madrid, Tokyo and London. Beat that, Battlefield! They also boasted that CoD Elite, the barely-functioning online service launched with MW3, has landed six million players. They compared this figure to sign-ups for Hulu, Xbox Live and Netflix, but I’m not sure that’s a fair comparison considering most of those companies were doing something completely new rather than piggybacking a service onto a successful product.
Like I’ve said before, I’m a Battlefield guy. But, any big success should be celebrated, so hats off to the folks at Infinity Ward for making such a popular game. And also to Activision, for an unmatched marketing blitz.
Are you one of the 30 million Call of Duty players?

The service, described by Activision as a “necessity” for future games, might be dead in the water for PC gamers.
Once upon a time, there was a company called Activision. This company, led by the shrewd but effective Bobby Kotick, practically reinvented the way games are developed, turning franchise studios into the equivalent of a car assembly line. Of course, Activision is always looking for ways to innovate (or, according to some gamers, squeeze a few more bucks out of customers), and their most recent idea came in the form of Call of Duty Elite.
Elite was intended to be a way to track your stats, interact with other players, and generally broaden your Call of Duty experience. Think of it like a new version of Bungie’s old stats tracker for Halo, or a slightly different version of Battlefield 3’s Battlelog. Elite came in two forms – free and premium, with premium subscribers also landing all future DLC and a couple of other perks.
But there was one problem with CoD Elite; mainly that Beachhead (the company behind the service) couldn’t get it to work for PC systems. When Modern Warfare 3 launched last week, we were told that Elite would be delayed for PC gamers due to concerns over stats rigging. Now, it looks like CoD fans may not see the service at all.
The official Call of Duty Elite Twitter page today posted a cryptic note indicating that while they’re working hard on Elite for PCs, they can’t guarantee “if or when” it will actually come around. That’s a pretty big “if,” considering how hard Activision pushed Elite as the future of gaming. This is just more bad news for the service, which has been plagued with issues since launching on consoles.
On the plus side, if you purchased Elite, at least you still get your DLC. Elite was a big chunk of the MW3 marketing blitz, so it’s unlikely they’ll completely scrap it. But PC owners may end up with a more limited version.
What do you think of Call of Duty Elite?

Five posts from the last few days that you may have missed, but shouldn’t have.
Saturdays can be slow news days, and it’s hard to keep up with everything that happens during the week. So, with that in mind, I’ve compiled a quick list of the most Jumped/Commented posts of the week, as well as a quick rundown on what you’ll find should you choose to read them yourself. Also, I’m giving one special QJ user the illustrious “Comment of the Week” award, so be sure to check that out at the end of this post.
Here goes:
Did You Kill a Rat in BF3 Single Player?
PETA is pretty upset about a scene in Battlefield 3 that has you pick up a rat, stab it with your tactical knife and toss it aside. Comments overfloweth on this post, but it looks like most people seem to agree that PETA needs to calm down. Read the full post and add your thoughts to the discussion – is in-game violence cause for real-life concern?
PoV: Is it Time for PlayStation 4?
In this post, I talked about the speed at which PC systems are outstripping consoles, and whether it’s time for an official announcement on the next Sony console. Sony probably isn’t dropping the system any time soon; analysts say it’s strong until 2015. Most commenters seem to feel that the PS3 has plenty of life in it – what do you think?
Colorado Man Loses His Mind Over MW3 Pre-Order
This post covers the very strange occurrence at a Colorado Best Buy on Tuesday night, when a man threatened to shoot employees and blow up the store because they ran out of copies of Modern Warfare 3. Commenters think the guy should have chilled out, but some have noted that Best Buy should have stocked enough games to cover their pre-orders. There’s also a fair bit of CoD bashing, if that’s the sort of thing you enjoy.
You Can Play Skyrim Forever
Bethesda recently revealed that Skyrim’s radiant story system will continue to create quests for as long as you own the game. This essentially gives you an infinite Skyrim experience. Comment reactions are pretty positive, though one commenter somehow manages to insult Modern Warfare 3 in the process. What do you think about a truly infinite experience?
Android and iOS Stomp Nintendo and Sony Handhelds
News that the mobile games market finally eclipsed traditional handheld games sales took the industry by storm. Games for these two mobile platforms have generated more revenue than PSP and DS games combined, but some savvy commenters noted that the DS and PSP are near the end of their lifespans, and the data may not be as impressive as some may think. Check out the post and decide for yourself!
And, finally, it’s time to present one special person with “Comment of the Week.” I’ve read through piles of comments – some good, some bad, and some absolutely awful – but the clear winner this week is doo che, for his/her comment on “You Can Play Skyrim Forever:”
“I HAVE NOT BEEN THIS EXCITED FOR ANYTHING IN MY ENTIRE LIFE.
YOU COULD GIVE ME 18 HOOKERS AND AN INFINITE SUPPLY OF BACON AND I STILL WOULDN'T GIVE A SHIT, CAUSE SKYRIM COMES OUT TOMORROW!”
I hope the game turned out as good as you were expecting, doo che. Keep on trucking.

We know you’re excited about Modern Warfare 3, but threatening to blow up a Best Buy?
It’s been a weird week for Modern Warfare 3. First, the truck heist. Then, the failed robbery. Now, the midnight launch bomb threat. Midnight launches are certainly where the magic happens, and are always an interesting opportunity to connect to fans of games you love. Unless, of course, the store runs out of copies of the game and people start freaking out and threatening to shoot people. I mean, sure, it’s a good game. But it’s surely not that good.
This is exactly what happened in Colorado a couple of nights ago. Lomorin Sar, a 31-year-old grown up man that should know better, essentially lost his mind when he found out that Best Buy had run out of pre-order copies of MW3 and he wouldn’t be receiving the game he reserved. Witnesses report that he became infuriated and started telling employees he was going to shoot them, then apparently mentioned plans to “blow up” the store.
Apparently, once he was done threatening the safety of everyone at Best Buy, Sar returned home and was promptly arrested. He’s being charged with disorderly conduct, which in this modern era of over-sensitive security seems like a relatively minor punishment. It looks like the police recognized his emotions got the better of him and he didn’t really plan to hurt anyone.
Frankly, the whole thing is ridiculous. Best Buy should have had enough copies to back their pre-orders, and Lomorin Sar should have reacted way differently when he found out they didn’t. I feel bad for everyone involved. Especially the news reported that wrote the words, “one man threatened to perform his own modern warfare.” Come on, dude.
Then again, I’m bringing a broadsword to the Skyrim launch. Just in case.

Activision’s premium CoD service is prepped and ready for download, assuming you need something to stare at until midnight.
We’re still roughly 10 hours from the official launch of Modern Warfare 3, not counting leaked copies or insane truck heists. For most of the gaming populace, midnight tonight marks the first opportunity to pick up what is probably going to be the biggest game of the year (in terms of sales, anyway). Activision knows you’re in a frenzy though, so they’ve pushed the Call of Duty Elite service live Xbox 360 – you can download it right now! If you’re a PC player, you’ll have to wait, since Elite is apparently broken on that platform.
If you’re unfamiliar with Call of Duty Elite, here’s how it works: You pay Activision $60 for your copy of Modern Warfare 3. Then (or now), you pay them another $49.99 for the privilege of using the premium Elite service. While Elite is available for free, only paid members receive all DLC packs, clan leveling and video uploads. It’s probably a good deal if you’re planning to buy DLC; they’ll be priced around $15 each and there will be at least three.
Beyond the DLC price, the premium version doesn’t seem to offer much more than the free one – managing your stats is probably the most valuable asset and you can do that with the regular version.
You’ll find a full comparison of the two Elite programs here: Call of Duty Elite
So what do you think of Call of Duty Elite? Cash grab or valuable service? I love Battelog (for BF3), but would not have paid to use it. Nor for Halo: Reach stats or any other “extra.” Still, some people will probably love it, and the DLC is a nice perk.

The Call of Duty franchise continues one of the best game ad campaigns of all time with the most recent version of “There’s a Soldier in All of Us.”
The commercial for last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops, was an excellent addition to the world of games advertising. Instead of marketing the game’s set pieces, graphics or play style, it focused instead on the core experience of the title – regular people getting to play dress-up and be elite soldiers for a day. I think most people would agree that it was a home run.
Activision is continuing in the same vein with this commercial for Modern Warfare 3, which stars Jonah Hill and Sam Worthington:
The commercial appears to be a shorter version of a long ad, so we’ll just have to wait for the whole thing to come out before we can get an idea of exactly what’s going on. I don’t find this one as appealing as the Black Ops commercial, simply because Black Ops had much more “normal person” representation.
What do you think of the latest MW3 commercial?

Despite a hugely successful launch, the game can’t top Black Ops or Modern Warfare 2 for weekly online play. At least, not this week.
Battlefield 3 sold over five million copies in its first week of launch. That’s a pretty successful release from the perspective of EA and DICE, but certainly not anything for Activision to lose sleep over. Now we have a bit more evidence that BF3 may not be quite the CoD killer EA hoped, in the form of the last week’s Xbox Live stats.
Battlefield 3 landed squarely in third place, behind 2010’s Call of Duty: Black Ops and 2009’s Modern Warfare 2. While it’s a bit unfair to compare the numbers for the release week, considering that Battlefield 3 launched on Tuesday and counting starts on Monday, it’s still stark reminder that as far as the imagined battle of the titan goes, Call of Duty is still the king of the roost.
Heres’ the top ten:
Call of Duty: Black Ops
Modern Warfare 2
Battlefield 3
Gears of War 3
FIFA 12
Halo: Reach
Batman: Arkham City
Madden NFL 12
Forza Motorsport 4
GTA IV
Naturally, these numbers are about to take a big hit with Modern Warfare 3 launching on the 8th, so it’s unclear what exactly will happen. My guess is that we’ll see MW3 take the top slot and BF3 take number two, with the other two titles falling considerably as more players pick up either of the new releases.
As for who is going to win the war between juggernauts? Who cares? Just get the game you like and play it. After all, this “competition” is really nothing more than a sharp marketing effort to send droves of people to either of the games – Activision and EA are very much in this together.
So, which of the top ten titles did you spend your time on this week?

Gameloft drops a brand new FPS title to your phone or tablet, bearing a pretty familiar moniker and dancing with Activision’s legal devils.
If you’re following game news (and you’re reading this, so I assume you are), you’re probably familiar with a little title abbreviated as MW3. Activision’s latest entry in the Call of Duty franchise is going to be a sales juggernaut and there’s not much anyone can do to stop it. Gameloft seems to have another idea: capitalize on the hype with a similar looking and sounding game. The title, Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nations, is a fully realized FPS aimed at your Android or iOS device later on this week.
The game features a wide array of multiplayer maps, customizable weapons and more than a few perks that will be familiar to the Modern Warfare crowd, such as Sleight of Hand for quicker reloads and scoping. Modern Combat 3 is set for an October 27th release, though it’s important to remember that Gameloft titles usually drop for iOS devices a few days before they hit the Android market. Either way, you’ll be able to play it eventually.
Modern Combat 3 boasts full online play with stats tracking and leaderboards. The game supports matches of up to 12 players and plays out a lot like Call of Duty, with death match and capture games making up the bulk of the experience. If you’re looking for a console-like shooter on your Android device or your thing that starts with a lowercase “i,” this may be the game for you.
What’s really amazing to me is how Gameloft has managed to thrive without being obliterated by lawsuits. I guess as long as they dance around the copyright effectively, they don’t have much to worry about. It’s not like EA or Activision owns the FPS genre, and most shooters are pretty generic nowadays.
Do you think phones and tablets can provide a satisfying FPS experience? There are some that claim consoles can’t even do it right, I shudder to think of how they feel about the iPad. Even high action Wii games are shrugged off as sloppy.

Activision and the remnants of Infinity Ward drop the latest trailer for what they’re calling the “most anticipated game of all time.” But is it enough to top Battlefield 3?
The next three weeks are shaping up to be an incredible battle of the titans. With Battlefield 3 launching October 24th and Modern Warfare 3 launching on November 8th, the attention of the industry is focued entirely on these two behemoth franchises. EA dropped their final launch trailer for Battlefield 3 earlier in the week; not to be outdone, Activision has done the same, perhaps hoping to block some of BF3’s enthusiasm.
Check out the official launch trailer for MW3 right here:
After watching both trailers, I do have to say that Battlefield has the clear edge in terms of polish and graphics. The game looks much better than MW3, and the trailer for MW3 didn’t really get me excited for the game. Frankly, it looks exactly like the last Modern Warfare, which is the primary complaint most gamers have levied at the franchise. I’ve yet to see a screen capture in which the game looks any different.
That being said, the Call of Duty brand has an insane amount of customer loyalty and Activision would really have to screw something up to send players from one camp to the other. As a gamer who plays both titles off and on, I would say that if MW3 is the same as MW2, I’m probably going to skip it.
Modern Warfare 3 is still pretty far ahead in terms of pre-order sales, with about 1.7 million to Battlefield’s 1.07 million. I vaguely remember the head of EA saying that he believed Battlefield would be the winner in terms of lifetime sales, and if Activision continues on the path of releasing the same game every year I wouldn’t be surprised if he were right.
So now that you’ve seen both launch trailers, which game looks like the better buy to you?

Earlier in the week, we found out that Bioware’s latest sci-fi RPG would be getting a pre-release demo. Now we have some more info for players that can’t wait to catch up with Commander Shepard and his/her crew.
Mass Effect 3 is easily one of the most anticipated titles of 2012. The first two games were both enormous successes for Bioware and EA, and even if you weren’t stoked on the changes made in Mass Effect 2, it’s still hard to spot a better sci-fi RPG. If you just can’t wait until March to get your hands on Mass Effect 3, you can jump into the pre-release demo starting in January.
The Mass Effect demo will include both single and multiplayer game features, but here’s the catch – in order to qualify for the early access demo, you’ll need to register an online pass from Battlefield 3. This won’t be a problem for the million or so people that have already pre-ordered BF3 and are stoked on playing, but some of those Call of Duty MW3 fans may be upset at the news. It does look like there will be an alternative method for getting in, but it’s not clear quite yet.
Here’s the full post, straight from the Bioware forums:
What are the details of the Mass Effect 3 pre-release demo?
•The Mass Effect 3 pre-release demo will launch in January 2012 (exact date TBA).
•The demo will include both single-player and multi-player sections.
•The demo will be released in all regions where the game is
How can I get early access to the multi-player portion of the Mass Effect 3 demo coming in January 2012?
•Owners of Battlefield 3, on any platform, who activate their Online Pass will automatically be granted early access to the multiplayer portion of the Mass Effect 3 demo. There is no need to enter any other codes, the early access will be applied to the EA Account associated with the Online Pass. Note: BF3 Origin Customers automatically have the BF3 Online Pass.
•This applies to all regions where the demo is released (to be announced)
•The exact date of the demo launch will be announced in late November
•There will be another program whereby players and fans of the Mass Effect franchise can unlock this early access (with no purchase necessary) – this will also be announced in late November or early December.
•There will also be a tool posted on www.masseffect.com allowing players to check if their EA account has been granted the early access.
•The length of the early access period is TBA.
•The single-player section of the demo will be available to all players on day one of the demo launch.
2012 is shaping up to be a massive year for gaming. Mass Effect 3, StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm, BioShock Infinite, Soul Calibur 5 and Final Fantasy XIII-2 are all headed our way in a relatively short period of time, so you’d better finish up your 2011 games fast (Skyrim!).
Are you excited about Mass Effect 3? Will you play the demo, or wait for the full release?

Next week may be all about Battlefield 3, but let’s not forget about that other small first-person-shooter that comes out later this year.
Modern Warfare 3 is coming. You may have forgotten, what with the immense media push from EA regarding next week’s release of Battlefield 3, but that doesn’t mean the game doesn’t exist anymore. MW3 is headed to your living room very, very soon, and by all accounts, it’s still demolishing every other game in terms of pre-sales.
Activision and Infinity Ward are naturally going to poke their heads in on BF3’s publicity a bit over the next few days, and the first such announcement comes in the form of an enhanced description of the game’s newest addition - point streaks. What were originally kill streaks in the last couple of games have been modified to point streaks, which was done to help players (like myself) that don’t necessarily play Modern Warfare with the sole intent of stacking up a body count.
Essentially, you’ll be able to select one of three Strike Packages for your character, based on your individual play style. Each Strike Package has different perks; for example, the Assault package has UAVs, Predator missiles and other aggressive bonuses, while the Support package has defensive items like airdrops, EMPs and turrets.
This trailer/commercial goes in-depth regarding what players can expect from the different Strike Packages:
I may be biased since I’ve long since given up on Modern Warfare in favor of Battlefield, but I just don’t think we’re going to see many of those alternative Strike Packages in use during regular play. Established teams might make them work, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see everyone locking into the one Strike Package that seems best geared at generating kills.
Maybe I’m wrong – which Strike Package will you take on November 8th?

You know that Modern Warfare 3 is going to be one big fight for survival, but you'll never be prepared for it really until you get to it.
Given that, "are you willing to do what is necessary" when "the world's darkest hour" comes? This is the question posited by Activision in this newest single-player trailer they sent out for Modern Warfare 3.
It's set in the fictional World War 3 era, and as expected, involves a lot of things blowing up. Yes, iconic landmarks very much included. Although for a very brief second there, I thought I was watching Uncharted 3.
Check out the vieo below and see what am talking about. More importantly, see what the single-player trailer looks like.
Modern Warfare 3 is set to come out exactly a month away from now, October 8th. We hear that it's also on the top wish list for gamers this holiday season.

Acivision's Robert Bowling could not contain his excitement. Over at his Twitter page, he confirmed that the game will in fact feature split-screen multiplayer.
Said Bowling (aka @fourzerotwo), "@skar I can confirm it, #MW3 does have online splitscreen multiplayer. Your wife will be very happy."
As with fans all over sure are going to be, too. Now all you need is to make sure you've got a wide-screen TV so you won't have to feel cramped looking at the split-screen.
This reveal becomes the latest confirmed feature for Modern Warfare 3, following the news from last week that the game will also have automatic updates. Developers Infinity Ward also promises fans that they will be focusing on lots of gunplay for MW3's multiplayer, so the split-screen really should make for a lot of fun.

mw3-thumbInfinity Ward feels that the introduction of killstreak rewards to the Call of Duty franchise may have taken the focus on actual gunplay in multiplayer sessions, so they're trying to make shooting people a bigger part of how players get kills in Modern Warfare 3.

You probably didn't see this coming, but there you go. Modern Warfare 3 has just been confirmed to be launching on the Nintendo 3DS as well.
The announcement was made on developer n-Space's official Facebook page, saying: "Here it is -- the big announcement that many of you have been waiting on... n-Space is indeed developing CoD MW3 for DS! This is our 5th CoD DS product and, we hope you'll agree, our best yet."
Now, some of you may be curious as to why they would still insist on making it for the DS when the newer and brighter star, the 3DS, is already available. To this, they say:
"You guys all need to understand that we make the games we are hired to make. It is not our call to decide which platforms to support. Obviously we are big 3DS fans and supporters as we have 3 titles in development. If it were as simple as us choosing what products and platforms to develop for I would get a lot more sleep."
But not to worry, they've got a few more eggs lying low in their development basket, and we hear that one is for the 3DS. Maybe we'll get something out of that bit in a short while.

Publisher EA has set their eyes on the competition, and they've named it to be Activision.
Since they're coming out with Battlefield 3, they've thereby proclaimed Modern Warfare 3 as the obvious competition for it. EA president Frank Gibeau proclaimed that it's "going into a heavyweight fight" with MW3, that Battlefield 3 is, definitely.
And although MW3 may have a "25 million head start", Gibeau remains confident that their game will be able to offer "a generational breakthrough in terms of technology."
Another thing they're looking forward to is the alternation of their franchises so that they can go head to head with the annual CoD franchise. "Battlefield and Medal of Honor will be a part of a rotation that we go after the shooter category with... the Medal of Honor and Battlefield teams are now operating in the same group together so they can share tools, technologies, innovations, without feeling like the same games."
"We have a [Battlefield 3] team that's been together for ten years. The Medal of Honor team was fairly new, they were using middleware and software that had already been out there, so... They're a great team, and we're going to continue to invest in them, but we're going to approach it slightly different than we did before."

Infinity Ward got a lot of flack for previously announcing that they will not be having dedicated servers for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3's PC version. It looks, though, as if the insistent public demand may be working favorably in the fans' direction.
As reports would have it, the developer is said to be rethinking their strategy, and is at least now open to discussing. The buzz is that this may have something to do with the fact that Battlefield 3 from DICE has been lauded as being created specifically with the PC in mind. In that case, that makes it a more formidable threat for Modern Warfare 3, and not having dedicated servers for it will surely be a point against them.
The MW3 community for the most part is busy with the rumors IW is definitely rethinking their strategy on the matter, and that it's looking more definitive now than it ever was.
CoD: Modern Warfare 3 is coming out for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360, and has been so far confirmed to be getting Team Perks and new Killstreaks. It's also being touted to be "more urban" than the previous iterations in the franchise.

It's pretty reasonable to assume that Infinity Ward will be stepping up their game in creating Modern Warfare 3, and we're pretty sure they will. But if you're thinking they'll be using a new game engine to whip out some flashier tech and graphics for the third installation of their mega-hit series, then you thought wrong.
Creative Strategist Robert Bowling explained that the dev team will be using the engine they tapped for Modern Warfare 2. According to him, this is because the devs find it more "counter-productive" if they create a new engine for MW3.
"An engine takes years and years to develop and get right," he said. Therefore, from that statement alone, it's probably safe to assume that the MW2 engine will be used a bit more longer, while the new one isn't made yet.
I can't help but wonder what kind of Modern Warfare the remaining people in Infinity Ward will produce without their former teammates.
