48 hours certainly flies by when you’re playing demos and writing snarky articles.
Guild Wars 2 is shaping up to be one of the biggest MMO releases of the year, and ArenaNet is presently allowing fans to sign up for a chance to jump into the game’s first open beta. Sadly, there won’t be room for everyone who signs up, but if you like Guild Wars and you want to get in on the next game, you may as well drop your name in the hat.
Here’s what you need to do to get in on the Guild Wars 2 beta:
Head to this website before 1:00pm, EST.
Click “Sign Up Now”
Download and run the system diagnostic software
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the scan
Once the scan is complete, you’ll be redirected to a site at which you can officially put yourself in the running for Guild Wars 2 beta contention. At the time of this writing, there were about two hours left for registration. If you make it into the beta, be sure to give me a wave. Or fireball.
Are you signing up for the Guild Wars beta, or waiting on the retail release?

The gaming giant responds to claims of weak security on its official website.
Late last week, we broke news over a potential security flaw in the design of the Xbox.com website. Jason Coutee, a hacked Live user and network infrastructure manager, notice that the Xbox.com login apparatus will allow for infinite incorrect attempts, opening the site up to brute force password scripts. While a captcha appears after eight tries, it can be dismissed by clicking one of the links on the site, and you can begin attempts anew with the same Live email.
Some gaming outlets, QJ included, pondered whether this loophole has anything to do with the recent spate of Live hacks. Microsoft seems to have been offended by the suggestion, and issued a stern statement earlier this morning. Calling the brute forcing issue outlined an “industry-wide issue,” Microsoft claimed that security is their highest priority and there is no “loophole” in the way their website works. It’s a boilerplate response from a company on the defensive – your basic “we are working on security, your information is safe, no hackers to be found here!”
Coutee responded to the statement, acknowledging that brute forcing is indeed a real issue for everyone, but that Microsoft had also apparently tightened up their backend security without making any visible changes to the website. The site no longer allows for infinite attempts, and instead stops responding to requests after the 20th submission. Microsoft clearly thought enough of the issue to change the way the website works, despite their claims of no loophole existing.
Whatever the cause, your Xbox Live ID is just a little bit more secure this morning. What do you think of the potential security threat – overblown or genuinely worrisome?

Details begin to emerge regarding the beloved flight sim franchise.
Remember Microsoft Flight Simulator? It was long touted as one of the most realistic flight sims in the world of gaming, and people built entire rooms dedicated to the experience. It’s been a few years since we’ve seen a new Flight Simulator game, but a brand new entry in the series, titled Microsoft Flight, is coming very, very soon.
The new game, which launches sometime this year, will apparently follow a very similar model to the F2P games of today, with basic access and content being free, but expanded experiences requiring small payments.
In a statement from Microsoft, it was explained that the Big Island of Hawaii and a few planes will be available to all players. However, if you want to expand your flights beyond one geographical region and try your hand at different aircraft, you’ll have to purchase and download that content separately.
You’ll also be able to play online with your Xbox Live friends, assuming you have one. You can sign up for the Flight Simulator beta by clicking this link.
Did you ever play Flight Simulator? What did you think?

Play EVE Online? If so, you may just land yourself a slot in CCP’s upcoming shooter, set in the persistent EVE universe.
EVE Online is one of the more interesting MMOs on the market – one where player choice is important and devs do relatively little to police the community. CCP, the company behind EVE, has long been at work on a futuristic shooter set in the EVE Online world, set to be released for the PS3 sometime this year. Basically, events on the ground will correspond with developments in the greater EVE universe, linking the two games together.
It’s almost time for Dust 514’s beta to officially begin, and if you happen to be an EVE subscriber, you’ve got a good chance of getting in thanks to your account. Just click this link to the official announcement, log into your active account, and hit the “Register” button. Simple, right?
There’s no guarantee you’ll be invited to the beta, but all active subscribers are able to drop their names into the hat. In the meantime, there’s still no official timetable for the beginning of the beta – it will likely be sooner rather than later.
Are you excited for Dust 514? I’m curious to see how it interacts with the current EVE universe.

The games company scrambles to repair the latest Zelda title’s game-breaking glitch.
We talked last week about The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword’s game-breaking bug. If you missed the article and can’t be bothered to click the link in the previous sentence, here’s the basic gist: If you complete certain actions in a certain order, your game will essentially become stuck between events and impossible to complete. This bug crops up about 30 hours into the game, and if you hit it, you have to start over from your last save.
Unfortunately for Nintendo Wii owners, there’s really no such thing as a “last save.” Unless you painstakingly double your saves between the Wii and an SD card, there’s no way to recover old saves, which means you’re going to end up starting Skyward Sword from the beginning. Nintendo, being without a method to patch games, advised players on how to avoid this bug on their official site.
Now, the company is offering to patch the save files and repair the problem, with one catch: In order to take advantage of this offer, you’ll have to send your SD card or your Wii in to Nintendo for servicing. The process takes at least a week, though the company is expecting longer waits thanks to the holiday rush.
If mailing Nintendo your Wii doesn’t sound like something you want to do, the company is hard at work on a downloadable patch. There’s no infrastructure for Nintendo to deliver patches of this nature, so it could be a while before the whole thing gets sorted out. But, at least they’re working on it. It’s worth noting that these solutions are only available for Japanese players; we’re still awaiting word on what will happen for us in the west.
Have you had any issues with Skyward Sword? Would you send your Wii in for a broken game save, or just start over?

World of Warcraft Holiday Deals
Give the gift of WoW this christmas...because I only have enough to pay for 11 months.
World of Warcraft is one of the only MMORPG's to not go free to play this year and with a strong business model, adoring fans and a lot of money, it probably never will. Meanwhile for those who have never tried out the game, you can get it on the cheap for this christmas only.
To get the original WoW and Burning Crusade in the WoW Battle Chest, it'll cost you $5.
Cataclysm for $20, Lich King for $10, a Celestial Steed mount for $10 and a Panderan Monk Pet for $5. Also in the December Holiday deals - which last till December 19th, shoppers - is the reminder that there is always the WoW annual pass, for the yearly addict in all of us.
They also have a Recruit-A-Friend program...which is weird to say the least, but when there are slowly falling subscription numbers might as well pull out all the stops till the Panda train arrives.
This Holiday promotion, in addition to initiatives like the WoW Annual Pass and the new push for the Recruit-A-Friend program are definitely ways to continue earning revenue despite falling subscription numbers. The expansions might still be coming - ooh, Pandas! - but I think these programs are a way for WoW to tread water until the next Blizzard MMO is announced.

Find out what your fellow QJers are talking about this week, as drama blooms from all corners.
Indie developers take a shot at Nintendo and Sony, GameStop leaked potential Vita memory card prices and Iran has a serious problem with one of the biggest games of the year. These are among the hottest news posts here on QJ, sparking up intense arguments and polite discussion from readers.
If you’re just sitting down for your Saturday reading, we’ve compiled five of the biggest stories from the week right here so you can get up to speed post-haste. Also, as is now Saturday tradition, I’ll be awarding one lucky/unlucky QJ reader the prestigious “Comment of the Week” award.
Without further ado, here’s your:
Should Nintendo and Sony Stop Making Consoles?
Indie and mobile developer Andy Payne thinks that Nintendo and Sony are limiting themselves by making their own hardware and developing software with exclusivity. His recommendation is that they stop worrying about hardware and focus entirely on software, distributing to mobile markets. What do you think?
Iran Bans Battlefield 3
The Iranian government is not pleased with the way Iran was treated in Battlefield 3, to the point of banning the game from sale in their country. The game’s primary offender? A staged attack by U.S. forces against Iran’s capital city of Tehran. There are two sides to this argument – you could argue that Iran is overreacting to a video game, but you could also argue that they’re justified in objecting to the content. Where do you land on this one?
Where and When Should the Next Assassin’s Creed Go?
We know Ubisoft is planning another Assassin’s Creed game, and it looks like they’re turning to their players for advice on where to set it. A leaked survey to fans of the franchise lists several possible locations, including the Victorian British Empire, Medieval China, and even the American Revolution. You can see the full list on the post and add your favorite location in the comments.
PlayStation Vita Memory Cards are Pricey
This is by far the most-commented story of the week – GameStop, using rough Yen conversions, posted prices for the proprietary memory cards that will be available for Sony’s Vita handheld, and gamers are not pleased with the cost. The smallest card, at 4GB, runs $29.99 – a far cry from what similarly sized non-Sony memory cards cost nowadays. Of course, Yen conversion is tricky, so we’ll have to wait on an official Sony announcement before throwing too big a hissy fit.
What is Your Game of the Year?
In this post, QJ writer Tim Curtain poses the question on everyone’s mind: What exactly is the best game of the year. With huge titles like Skyrim, Portal 2 and Skyward Sword on the list, it’s going to be hard for anyone to truly nail down a winner. Dark Souls is making a strong appearance in the comments section, as is Portal 2 – what game would you call the best if you had the chance?
Those are your five most talked about QJ posts for the week. And now it’s time for that very special Saturday ritual – the awarding of Comment of the Week. This week’s award goes to triac for his comment on Skyrim Patch Breaks More than it Fixes:
The CG machine is broken again!

LA Noire creator to make Whore of the Orient
Brendan McNamara is heading to the Orient.
LA Noire is still one of my favourite games of the year. Seemlessly blending the classic point and click adventure style with a brand new stylised action and some amazing graphics, which all play into the gameplay carefully. Sure the game does have a few drawbacks, but not enough for Brendan McNamara to stop working.
His next game is going to be called Whore of the Orient, which may or may not go through title changes before the game even starts to be developed. The game will be developed with KMM, an Australia studio owned by George Miller, who you may know as the director of those films about penguins or about Mel Gibson in a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
Speaking of Mad Max, McNamara will also be developing a game based on the fourth film, which has been in development hell for over a decade, with the subtitle Fury Road. Miller says he is finally doing the film "after years of resisting the impulse" and also three family friendly films that have grossed over a hundred million dollars worldwide. Miller has gone on the record saying  "Multi-platform, that's the thing", explaining "Create once; publish many times, on multiple platforms. You create a world and then you go in to all the different platforms - your iPhone, your iPad, on the net," I doubt he's talking about ARG, but merely just multiple ports.
But that's not the only reason, recently in Australia, our culture and arts funding just went through the roof. Whilst it isn't helping to fund theatre all too much, the future is in video games and KMM's co-found Doug Mitchell couldn't be more pleased to immediately go forward with the two games, thanks to "government support."
Mitchell also noted that whilst Australia doesn't have a big games sector, the "potential in the video games sector is massive," he says. He also notes that it's a 60 billion dollar industry that's fast-tracking towards 90 billion. He compares the film industry with costs being around 170 million with more to advertise it and the fact games can be made at 10% of the budget and marketing is often word of mouth.
Mitchell mentioned LA Noire saying that they sold 3 million units with $135 million net revenue, nice to see to being able to use that dead horse after everyone's beaten it to death. Whilst there's not much info on the Orient, McNamara spoke with Eurogamer last month saying "It's pretty interesting. It's one of the great untold stories of the twentieth century," he said. "So I think it'll be good."

If you’ve ever tried to use the Portal 2 authoring tools that were released soon after the game, you’ve probably noticed that they have a pretty steep learning curve. While some gamers probably picked it up and figured it out, others, like myself, were immediately turned off by the complexity and decided to spend time doing something else. The new level creator, which will be part of Portal 2’s next free DLC pack, hopes to change all that and make level authoring something anyone can do.
Instead of working with a program that feels like software for level design professionals, Portal 2’s level creator will work much more like the Forge function found in recent Halo titles. Users will be able to drag and drop items into the environment and the whole thing is engineered to be as intuitive as possible. Players will also be able to upload their creations to the Steam Cloud, making them instantly available to anyone that wants to give them a try.
Here’s what Valve has to say on the official Portal 2 website:
“The simplified puzzle creator will let players easily carve out their creations in a straightforward but powerful way. They'll then be able to immediately upload those levels to their Steam Cloud and share them with other players online. We're also building a community site to host all of these player-created puzzles. The site will allow players to quickly find new puzzles and add them to their game, ready to play, with a single click. Players will then be able to rate the puzzles they've played, leave comments for puzzle creators, and follow creators they like.”
Sounds good to me. I’ve always loved Forge and if Valve can create a similar experience for Portal 2 fans, you can bet I’ll be involved.
Are you excited to build your own Portal test chambers?

Nvidia has just released a set of brand new drivers for their graphics cards that promise a marked increase in performance for today’s Battlefield 3 release.
If you’re one of the many PC gamers that picked up Battlefield 3 today (or last night), it’s fitting to assume you updated your graphics card drivers before you started the install. After all, with the insane problems we saw during the Rage launch, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. If you didn’t, now is the time to get those drivers updated and ensure your system is running at peak performance.
Nvidia card owners are getting a little help from the manufacturer, who has released a brand new set of drivers specifically for the launch of Battlefield 3. The new drivers offer what Nvidia claims to be an 11% improvement in performance, which is more than enough to make or break a heated multiplayer match. With Battlefield 3 being hailed as one of the best-looking PC games ever, it’s only fitting that you’d need to upgrade or update something in order to experience it in its full glory.
Here’s some technical jargon from the Nvidia website:
For Battlefield 3 we’ve improved performance by up to 11% since the release of the GeForce 285.38 beta drivers, have included several compatibility enhancements, a new and improved SLI profile, and a 3D Vision profile. Similarly, Rage has received enhancements since the release of the same drivers, and Batman: Arkham City compatibility has been implemented.
As mentioned, updates contained within the earlier beta drivers have been carried over, such as the many performance improvements made to games --between the release of the 280.26 WHQL drivers and today’s 285.62 WHQL drivers-- when running on our entire range of 500-Series graphics cards.
On the GeForce GTX 580, for example, SLI users can expect to receive frame rate boosts of up to:
• 13% in Metro 2033,
• 8% in STALKER: Call of Pripyat,
• 7% in Civilization V,
• 7% in F1 2010,
• 5% in Crysis 2 with the DirectX 11 Ultra Upgrade enabled,
• 5% in Lost Planet 2,
• And 5% in Mafia 2.
So, even if you’re not playing Battlefield 3, you may as well pick up the new drivers. You can find the full list of changes and affected games by clicking this link, and you can bounce over to Nvidia and download the new drivers by clicking this one. Party on!
Also, if you are playing BF3 – how’s it going? I haven’t had a chance to pick up my copy yet.
