And a job offer.
There’s no question that piracy is a major concern in the games industry. While some pirates do turn into customers and there’s something to be said for how much DRM sucks, it doesn’t change the fact that pirating a game is, on some level of the word, theft. However, game developers tend to take different approaches to the pirate community—some declare war and some, like Starbreeze Studios, hold out an olive branch.
If you download and install the company’s latest game, Syndicate, via Origin or any other legitimate means, you’ll notice an .nfo file hidden in the game’s directory. .nfo files are usually found in pirated software—they tell you how to go about setting up the illicit copy and who is responsible for the hack, crack or upload.
But this .nfo file is different, in that it was placed there by Starbreeze devs. The .nfo file contains a description of the game and some install directions. They even made an ASCII logo. And at the bottom, the devs dropped this message:
“Over a hundred people spent several years of their lives making this game.
If you like what you play, please consider purchasing it if you haven't
The studio also reached out to gamers with talents in game design, art, programming and sound design—perhaps some gifted game pirates will take the opportunity to switch sides to the development side of things. You can see the full file here.
What do you think of speaking directly to pirates? Better than restrictive DRM?

The Australian government is finally addressing major problems in its game rating system.
We’ve talked previously about the massive problems with the way Australia’s government rates games. Because the country has no “Mature” equivalent rating, all games must be appropriate for teens in order to hit retail shelves. This limitation has caused some games to either be modified for the Aussie market, or made unavailable to Aussie players.
The Australian government is aware of the problem, and recently recommended a full review of their ratings system be administered to figure out how to best move forward. While the results from that review are still pending, the new Federal Minister for Home Affairs doesn’t seem intent on waiting around. Jason Clare, who now serves in the Minister position, confirmed via interview that a bill designed to establish a mature-equivalent rating would be introduced to parliament sometime next month. The new rating, known as R18+, will help developers bring violent and otherwise graphic content to Australian shores.
After the bill is introduced, it will have to pass first in the Lower House, then in the Senate. There’s no guarantee of passage, but even having a bill on the docket is farther than the Aussie government has managed to get in a long time.
Here’s hoping the bill goes through and our Australian friends can stop worrying about whether particular games will make it to their stores. Look for more updates in February, once the bill hits a vote.

The online war against SOPA seems to be getting bloodier every day.
SOPA is an incredibly controversial subject around the web these days. The bill, which is currently making its way through the U.S. Congress, sets strict rules for the enforcement of copyright protections across the web – rules that some web enthusiast claim could end the Internet as we know it. The basic breakdown works like this: if a site hosts copyrighted content, that site can be permanently blocked by the U.S. government, regardless of whether the site owner was responsible for the posting.
As SOPA has drawn closer and closer to a vote, opposition has increased. The biggest story so far occurred last week, when news of GoDaddy’s support of the bill caused customers to un-register over 20,000 domains in protest. GoDaddy has since changed its tune, moving from the position of helping author the bill (sort of) to the position of vehement opposition. It was a strong demonstrator of the power of numbers.
It looks like Sony may be next on the list of potential targets, as Anonymous (the loosely affiliated band of hackers, trolls and other Internet personas) has declared war on the company due to its support for the SOPA legislation. Anonymous, never one for subtlety, has promised “the end” for Sony and its associates.
The attacks will likely be targeted at PSN, as Anonymous will no doubt try to take the network down in protest of Sony’s SOPA support. This is an interesting predicament – on the one hand, it’s nice to see the public holding a company accountable for its actions, on the other, most of the people affected by a PSN outage are merely innocent customers.
We’ll just have to see how this one plays out. When Anonymous focuses on something, they’re usually quite a force, but they’re not always the best at getting everything together. Stay tuned for updates.
What do you think about the idea of punishing players to send a message to Sony?

According to Japanese magazine, Famitsu, a brand new title in the Harvest Moon series will be landing on the 3DS.
While the magazine did not divulge any specific game details about it, they did say that fans can expect it to come out by early next year.
What Famitsu's issue this week did elaborate on, however, is the upcoming Harvest Moon: The Tale of Two Towns, which was revealed back in April through Facebook.
If you're thinking that Natsume and Marvelous Interactive will be jumping on the HD bandwagon, though, you might as well stop hoping for it as early as now, because the companies have already declared that HD-fying the previous Harvest Moon titles are not in their list of priorities.

It should be out in Europe by October 21st. As to whether or not this will ever see the light of day in North American shores, we'll have to wait until Rocksteady gives the word for it.
In the meantime, the team has declared that they will no longer be issuing character reveals, instead inviting everyone to look forward to the trailer of Batman's ever-loyal sidekick, Robin. The demo for Assassin's Creed: Revelations opened to the rest of the PSN populace late last week. It looks like everyone's having a jolly good time so far, because Ubisoft themselves have decided to extend the demo's run.
Fans will sure be glad to know that the multiplayer beta of Revelations has now been extended all the way until this Saturday, September 17th. Originally, they intended for it to close yesterday, September 12th.
You've still got a couple more months before you can get your hands on Assassin's Creed: Revelations, as it's not set to come out till November for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. Ubisoft's also declared recently that they've got at least 85% of the franchise's lore mapped out, so more or less, they have a pretty good idea of where it's headed.

By now we're pretty sure you've already made plans about whether or not you'll go to the Call of Duty XP happening next week. In case you haven't yet, maybe good ol' Kanye can change your mind.
That's right, they're bringing in the undisputedly most badass pop artist there is today. No, Taylor Swift won't be there to be bullied off the stage, nor Beyonce to be declared as his personal pick for a winner, but he will be there to cap off the event.
Make sure you'll have some spare US$ 150 bucks to get you into the event this coming September 2nd and 3rd, at Los Angeles, California. Sure, it does seem like too much of a price for a two-day event, but your US$ 150 will get you a long way, including a two-day pass, as well as a voucher for the Modern Warfare 3 Hardened Edition Pack.
You can even join in the tournament, which could make you the newest member of the millionaire's club, thanks to the US$ 1 million cash prize.
Guess Activision really meant it when they said Modern Warfare 3 will have something for everyone. Kotick was also quoted recently as claiming that the enthusiasm being showed for the latest iteration of Cod: Modern Warfare is "unlike anything" that they've seen in their company's history.

If there's one game that should quash all doubts as to the power of Kinect, it should be Fable: The Journey. This bold claim was made by none other than Lionhead Studios big boss, Peter Molyneux.
In an interview, he stated that, "The trouble is for a lot of gamers is that they haven't got an example that they like. Dance Central and the Sports titles, they're wonderful, incredible things for a mass market. But gamers love being challenged."
He continued to talk about how gamers "love big immersive adventures lasting ten hours, not ten minutes. And it's human nature to be suspicious of something unless you see an example that you like."
Molyneux then went on to share the specific task that Microsoft gave them in developing The Journey. "Our job is to make a game that the hardcore would really enjoy," he revealed.
"That's what Microsoft asked us to do, so that the people who don't have Kinect would feel compelled to get it. Not because they have to, but because they want to. And we do that by making a 90+ Metacritic game that is reviewed by gamers.
"That's who review these games, and that's why the early games didn't get those scores. And that's our ambition now."
Molyneux has previously declared that freedom will be the centerpiece of Fable: The Journey. He was also quoted as admitting just last June that Kinect certainly has issues.

We just might be seeing Metal Gear Solid 1 in HD in the future, thanks to Kojima Productions' desire to make it so. Creative producer Yoshikazu Matsuhana declared this, speaking with Eurogamer at E3 earlier this week.
The original title of the classic franchise did not make it to the cut of the HD collection coming out later, and the producer explained that it was because game one is just too old.
"Obviously, we wanted to include it and make it a complete collection," he said. "However, as you know, Metal Gear Solid 1 was for the PSone. It has a very, very low polygon count."
He furthered, "While at the time the game was something new and refreshing, just bringing it as is into HD probably wouldn't have that much meaning to us. We're doing two and three with a certain work flow where the goal is to take that game, preserve it and introduce it to a new generation. We can't really take that approach with Metal Gear Solid 1 because it's very dated at this point."
The limitations may be keeping them from fully embarking on an HD-fication of MGS1 right onw, but he reassures that they would want to get it done at some point in time.
"If we were going to do Metal Gear Solid 1 we'd want to take more time with it. Not just up-res the textures, not just make things look pretty and polished, but go back and tweak some of the gameplay, tweak the story to update things and do it properly. Not just a re-master but a re-imagining almost.
Metal Gear Solid HD Collection was recently confirmed for the PS3 and Xbox 360, which is set to include the HD versions of MGS 2, 3 and Peace Walker. The other MGS title waiting in the wings is Rising, and Kojima is promising "big news" on it come Winter.
Via [Eurogamer]
"We do want to do that sometime down the road but it will take more time. It's not something we're looking at doing right now."

There's always room for improvement -- for anything. Game publishers are no exception to that rule, and Ubisoft is one of those who had the guts to say it publicly.
UK head Rob Cooper expressed this in a recent interview, noting their areas wherein they can use the upgrade, as well as how they intend to go about it.
"We do have areas in which we need to improve. Creating the buzz earlier is crucial, and firming up release dates is key to maximizing our relationships with the trade and with media, but these are things we have acknowledged and they're being addressed."
Another area that they could work on would be the online market. Cooper himself is not all too satisfied about their movement in this particular aspect of the business, deeming it to be "a little bit slow, but we have a number of online games and MMOs on the horizon - Trackmania, Ghost Recon Online, Settlers and Imagine Town are four great titles for four very different audiences."
He also declared that there will be a lot more "kind of companion gaming" to see in the coming year."

This should finally put an end to the long-running debate of whether video games should be considered art.
The National Endowment for the Arts (NE) had recently declared video games as an eligible art form, having met their new grant application guidelines.
The additional requirement for NEA, which nicely fit in video games in the art category, would be "Arts in Media". This states that:
"All available media platforms such as the Internet, interactive and mobile technologies, digital games, arts content delivered via satellite, as well as on radio and television," are from hereon out to be recgonized as an art form.
On top of this, the NEA also are giving grants reaching up to US$ 200,000 for those works of art, or those that are about to arts, to support the artist.
Overall, this is definitely great news for the industry. Also, it does well for the arts scene to expand their definition of what is art, considering that a whole lot of other forms are coming up in this digital age.
Part of forwarding the culture of art is to be open to the fast-changing technology that allows for other modes of creativity to surface. Most certainly, video games is one such avenue, and it makes little sense to box it up in a league away from the arts simply under the notion that it's only a game.
It takes just as much creativity and dedication to the craft as with any other painting or sculpture or music, so really, it's about time video games be given the recognition it deserves.
As much as I love and respect Roger Ebert for his critiques on films, I am so glad this is one point he's been proven wrong. It escapes my mind how he could have been so narrow-minded regarding video games being considered as art, when films themselves were also ostracized by the arts industry when it was first starting out.
Considering that the history of film and video games are not all that different, in terms of the hurdles they had to go through to be recognized as a credible medium of the arts, he should have at least been more welcoming to the idea that digital games - no matter how childish/ childlike they may appear in form - do have more to offer than mindless entertainment.
This is definitely a huge score for all video games out there. Kudos to NEA for recognizing this shift in media!
