Deal with it, Brazil.
If you tuned in for Nintendo’s Nintendo Direct broadcast this morning, you were treated to yet another incredibly boring video with a few spread out game trailers. However, if you managed to stick through the thing until close to the end, you’re also aware of what we’re about to reveal here on the site: Mistwalker’s insanely popular RPG, The Last Story, is headed to North America.
The game, which was published by Nintendo in Europe and Japan, will be distributed by XSEED Games. There’s no official release date as of yet; all we know is that you can expect to see the game sometime in 2012. This is the second good bit of news for Nintendo fans, following the Xenoblade Chronicles release date announcement earlier today.
If you didn’t watch the Nintendo Direct broadcast, you can watch it below for information on Kid Icarus, Fire Emblem, Fatal Frame and – gasp! – Mario Tennis:
Are you amped to see more RPGs coming to the Wii in 2012? Also, how awkward is Reggie Fils-Aime?

You wanted it, you got it—Xenoblade Chronicles is headed to the States.
The gaming community practically exploded with ecstasy when Nintendo confirmed that the previously unavailable Xenoblade Chronicles would be making its way to western shores. It’s a hotly anticipated title that’s exclusive to the Nintendo Wii—how often do you hear that?
Anyway, if you’ve been waiting to find out when Xenoblade Chronicles would hit shelves so you could request time off work (just say your mom died), here it is: April 6. In addition to confirming the April launch date, Nintendo revealed the game’s cover art, which was selected by a fan poll (that’s it above this paragraph).
So party on, fans of Japanese RPGs. Assuming, of course, that you don’t live in Australia, Japan or Europe, in which case you have already played Xenoblade Chronicles and totally over it.
Are you going to pick up Xenoblade Chronicles in April?

Players under 18 may only be allowed three hours of game time per day.
You’re probably familiar with South Korea’s gaming shutdown law, which went into effect late last year. The law essentially blocks gamers under 18 from accessing online games during a six-hour block late in the night. The nation’s Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, however, is looking for even steeper measures.
MEST believes that the danger in gaming doesn’t come so much from when kids play as it does from how much time they spend playing. It makes sense when you think about it – what’s worse for your health, ten hours of daytime gaming, or one hour of late night play? With this in mind, the agency is currently reviewing a new program that will limit all minors in the country to only three hours of game time per day, with only two hours being allowed consecutively.
Resistance to the proposed rule has already reared its head, with many critics noting that South Korea is regulating gaming from three separate government agencies. Whatever the concern, South Korea has shown its willingness to interfere in the lives of gamers before, so there’s no telling whether this particular rule will or won’t be implemented.
We’ll keep you updated. In the meantime, do you think the government has a right to tell you when you can play games, and for how long? Is it right to try to protect young gamers from bad habits?

Capcom revises its initial price point for the upcoming Nintendo 3DS title.
Resident Evil Revelations is due out for the Nintendo 3DS in just a couple of weeks, and up until now we were fully expecting to pay $49.99 for the game. This price, a bit higher than normal for 3DS titles, was apparently the result of the game being installed on a 4GB card instead of the usual 2GB.
While Capcom noted that it was confident the game’s quality was well worth the extra cash, they didn’t seem happy about the higher price point. And, according to a statement on their official site, they’ve been looking for weeks to find ways to eliminate the discrepancy. It looks like they figured it out.
As of now, Resident Evil Revelations is priced at the normal rate of $39.99. It’s worth noting that the price change only applies to United States version of the game – if you live somewhere else, you’ll need to stay tuned to Capcom for further updates.
What do you think of the pricing change? Is Capcom really fighting for the wallets of consumers, or just afraid the extra $10 will scare off potential buyers?

There’s no retail version of Bastion, but that doesn’t stop the developer from getting a copy to an American soldier.
Here’s your heartwarming video game story for the week: Reddit user bolivar-shagnasty (nice name) is currently deployed in Afghanistan. He’s a gamer, but thanks to the slow web connection in his location, he doesn’t have access to some of the cool downloadable games we take for granted. He found out about Bastion through reviews, but was unable to download it thanks to the terribad web connection.
So, he did the next logical thing – he contacted SuperGiant to find out if they would ever drop an on-disc version of Bastion. Greg Kasavin, writer and designer for the title, responded that while there were no plans for a retail release, he might be able to work something out for such a special circumstance.
A few weeks after the conversation, bolivar received a disc version of Bastion as well as some extra goodies. Essentially, the good folks over at SuperGiant built a one-time only retail copy of their game to get it to a soldier without access.
It’s really cool to see a developer go out of its way to bring a game to players. SuperGiant gets a big salute from us at QJ for putting in the extra effort. Nice work, guys.

The thriller is making its way to computers without a direct download connection by way of game store shelves.
It’s a curious trend in the industry to see digital games end up in a box an on a shelf, but it makes sense when you consider the massive number of people that don’t have access to a high-speed internet connection. Boxed copies of games may be the only way for many players to get their fix, and publishers could theoretically be missing sales by not having their games sitting in a store.
So, we’re seeing more and more digital-only games end up in the box. Remedy Entertainment’s Alan Wake appears to be the next game to get the retail treatment, with publisher Nordic Games announcing that it has just inked a deal with the developer to bring the PC version of the game to stores.
The retail version of Alan Wake will include the original game as well as both DLC packs, The Signal and The Writer. There’s no release date available quite yet, but we’ll keep you posted as details emerge. For now, all we know is that there is a boxed PC version of Alan Wake, and it’s coming our way soon.
In the meantime, what do you think about bringing digital games to the retail world?

If you’re still undecided on the Vita, swing by your local Best Buy and try the device out yourself.
Demo units are among the most important sales mechanics in the world of games hardware. There’s no telling how many consoles and handhelds were sold as a direct result of a browsing customer laying hands on the technology; this is especially true of handheld units, which you really need to hold to understand.
According to Destructoid, a couple of Vita demo units have shown up in a Best Buy in Connecticut. The games were equipped with small memory cards and the Little Deviants launch title (no Uncharted?!). Unlike the usual demo setup, these devices aren’t nailed to a wall or promotional stand and instead roam the store in the hands of employees.
There’s no word on how quickly Best Buy will be rolling the devices out nationwide, but it’s a fair bet you’ll be seeing them in your local store soon enough. If you want to get your hands on a Vita, the best thing to do is call the store to see if the demos are out.
Do you think trying a Vita in person will change your buying plans?

Ó

THQ hasn’t been doing great over the last few months, and this nasty letter from a former employee doesn’t make things look any better.
THQ, the company behind Saints Row: The Third, had a tough 2011. The company was in such dire straits that rumors floated around about it canceling its entire 2014 lineup, rumors the company vehemently denied. This morning we received word that THQ was shifting its strategies yet again, this time focusing more on its core franchises over third party licensing.
It’s hard to get a bead on exactly what’s happening with THQ. Rumors and sales indicate the company is in serious trouble despite the success of Saints Row, but the company refuses to admit that they have any sort of problem. Only one person seems to be willing to comment on the state of the company – an alleged former employee with an obvious bone to pick.
In a letter written to THQ’s Board of Directors, CEO Brian Farrell as well as the general public and a collection of gaming news sites, this “Formerly Mismanaged” employee rattles off a laundry lists of complaints about the company.
The letter essentially claims that THQ’s problems stem from mismanagement and a Board of Directors that has no clue how to strategically run a gaming company. It gives examples like acquiring game studios with no plan on how to utilize their talents (then later shutting them down), investing money into shrinking niche markets, the company’s refusal to dump a CEO that has tanked its stock price and high-paid executives making enormous mistakes that call their competency into question. The disastrous uDraw tablet also makes an appearance.
These allegations of management incompetency surface just a few days before THQ announces its current financial standing on February 2, and things certainly don’t look good. One analyst has gone on the record by stating that THQ, without some sort of financial windfall, with run out of cash near the middle of this year.
You can read the letter in its (extremely long) entirety below:
[JoyStiq]
"To:
THQ Board of Directors
Lawrence Burstein
James Whims, Gigex, Inc.
Henry DeNero, Arcturus Capital
Brian Dougherty, AirSet, Inc.
Jeffrey Griffiths , Lumber Liquidators
From:
Current and Ex-Employees, Shareholders, and The Public
Dear THQ Board,
I am an ex-employee at THQ. I saw the tweet-started headlines over the past week from an "industry expert." This expert is one who I and my friends and co-workers in the industry have never heard of after a long time in the field. I had been reading the various following articles and accounts and it generated sympathy for friends both recently laid off and currently still there. I thought it would be a good idea to send a note with their input. This note has honest facts and thoughts about THQ and the current problems there. Most of these facts are public knowledge and they have been confirmed by public records or can be confirmed by current and former THQ staff there both before and after my and their time.
I have long felt the need to explain to outsiders how this beaten-down company has wound up in this position. It is to the point where having it on your resume is not a point in your favor. And that shouldn't be the case. I'm/We're sending this note anonymously because some of us are still awaiting final checks and others know how little corporations like employees who air their dirty laundry. We feel the need to say something to combat the partial misinformation being written.
THQ had been known through the years for having a formula. They find a hot license, make a cheap game, barely advertise it, and make money. This formula worked during the Playstation and Xbox and Gameboy days and made the company a lot of cash. Unfortunately, THQ's old guard executives seem to be stuck trying to manage the company the same way they did back then and haven't realized the industry has changed.
The beginning of the end came years ago as Brian Farrell lead an executive team to acquire a large number of studios. A large amount of cash was used in the acquisition or setup of game developers with different degrees of talent. The problem was they were bought without strategic reasoning or specific plan on to use them. So after awhile another large amount of money was spent as those studios failed and were sold off and shut down. The executive team at the time were an entirely different group of people with one key exception in the CEO. The CEO/the then executive team wasted the cash that the company had built up with these massive investments and selloffs.
The studio purchase errors were not helped by the mistakes in the licensing deals that were signed by the same CEO. Millions and millions of dollars were wasted on acquiring licenses at the same time the kids, family, casual business was declining at a rapid rate. Instead of slowing those acquisitions he overpaid for more of them until again cash was wasted in paying for brands that didn't sell well anymore.
The mistakes in decisions and cash losses triggered wave after wave of layoffs. In the most recent wave, about 40 people lost their jobs this past December through no fault of their own. The reason why is the chronic and constant mismanagement of their company. The fact is that the CEO and executive committee were so focused on trying to hit an unrealistic financial goal that they bet everything on an extremely risky proposition in the uDraw tablet. When they lost, they further displayed their lack of management skills by not having a contingency plan. Three weeks after the game launched, an entire business unit was wiped out when it didn't meet its goal due to relying on that one product to hit an unrealistic target.
After the layoffs many ex-employees walked around shell-shocked and trying to figure out who was responsible. They came to the understanding that most of us do after leaving the company. The issue with THQ has never been one of lack of staff creativity, intellect or business intelligence. It all rests of the failure of its management team and you the Board of Directors.
This Board has allowed the Brian Farrell, the CEO, the ongoing ability to take a cash-rich profitable company and drive it from a $30 share price down to around $.70 without acting despite numerous mistakes that even for those lacking business training, could see were errors. Even without glaring mistakes how can the same CEO stay in charge after a 99% share price loss? Aside from the board, who is responsible for the current situation and who is accountable for the current and future job losses at the company? When you ask the recently departed who are a good source of information, you get the same answers. This uDraw failure is the largest and most recent one in a string of them that were hushed over and hidden. The answer aside from the Board is the current executive team that allowed this uDraw implosion to happen.
Brian Farrell, CEO with a 2011 salary of $1,289,558, for a lack of business intelligence or fiscal accountability. A vocal inside group pointed out the mistake of trying to launch a year-old product that received almost no software support in the last 12 months. Instead of listening and having a back-up plan, he went ahead and invested a ridiculous amount of money in the manufacturing and advertising of the product and failed miserably. It is passed time for him to go. We are wondering what is taking so long for you to act. We have been wondering this same question for a long time.
Martin Good, EVP and head of Kids, Family, Casual with a 2011 salary of $1,198,023, for bringing no strategic thought or business sense to the role. He was brought out from Australia sales to replace an outgoing head of the business unit and rapidly displayed a complete lack of leadership skills, vision, and any sort of analytical sense. Looking at his compensation package, he is an excellent negotiator as his salary is higher than anyone's except for the CEO. On the plus side he lost his job with the rest of those laid off. On the minus side, he will be floating down on a golden parachute while the rest of the former employees scramble to look for jobs in this challenging environment. Most of those jobs will be at studios in other parts of the country, so they will be forced to relocate their families in the middle of their childrens school years. It is incredible that he made this level of income while doing such a poor job, but it serves as a reflection of the lack of Brian Farrell's ability to staff well and manage.
Paul Pucino, CFO with a 2011 salary of $674,855, for not planning for this possibility and having a safety net or a plan to cover THQ just in case of failure. We have a line of credit that we likely used to buy the plastic that is not selling to customers. It is like taking a cash advance to buy THQ stock and just as worthless of an investment. Paul is known as an absentee executive who is missing when business situations gets complicated. While he was in the loop at the point of the risk, with the following failure he has been clearly unavailable. It is another example of Brian Farrell's inability to staff.
Ian Curran, EVP and head of global publishing with a 2011 salary of $1,037,047, for not flagging an unrealistic sales goal to the CEO or the Board when a big part of the corporation felt the numbers were unrealistic. He blindly held up an unachievable target and didn't act when multiple people told him he was aiming to high and out of step with the marketplace. If a sales executive's job is to anticipate the market, he has done a poor job of it. Another example of Brian Farrell not being able to find the right people for the right job.
Ed Kauffman, EVP of Legal and Business Affairs who clearly was signing bad deals on licensed products, not factoring in the changes in the business and being more critical with financial terms with partners. uDraw by itself cannot possibly explain the companies poor financial health. It is a combination of that product and a string of bad licensed deals that the company took on against better judgement. While Brain Farrell would logically be the final decisionmaker for deals, Kauffman is either unpersuasive in his arguments to not do them or supported them. Either situation equates to another example of poor staffing choices by the CEO.
uDraw was failure and the only people to blame are the people listed above. THQ and its current financial situation is also their responsibility. And they were paid around $4.5 million dollars for their poor decisions. If there is any doubt we would recommend talking to current and former staff to get the straight story. Don't read this note as bitterness on their part, but more as long overdue truth.
So, Board, it is time. Passed time for you to act and passed time for you to do something about the mismanagement that has gone on for too many years. We've watched the stock from the outside and read the comments and the reason why the company is valued so low despite its sales is because of this underqualified management team.
Board it is time for you to act before your names are added to the list above of things that must change.
Sincerely,
The Formerly Mismanaged"

mfthqle1THQ hasn’t been doing great over the last few months, and this nasty letter from a former employee doesn’t make things look any better.

Looking for a cheap last-minute gift or a game to play while you ignore your family? Pick up Limbo!
Limbo has won a zillion awards and was easily one of the biggest XBLA games of 2010. Since its initial success, PlayDead has done everything they can to expand their stranglehold on the indie market, releasing the game on every system to which they can get access.
Limbo is your basic platformer, where your primary goal is to run from one end of a level to another without being killed. But the vague nature of your location and purpose help to create an intriguing experience, not to mention the monochrome visuals and eerie environment. Limbo is one of the most successful games ever released on XBLA, selling over four million copies to date.
Since its initial release, Limbo has been brought to PC and PS3 – it managed to sell more copies than any other PSN game in 2011. As for the iTunes Store, Limbo is priced at a mere £6.99 – more than worth the cost considering the escape it can potentially provide you during this upcoming holiday crush.
Limbo is set for release on Steam in January, officially putting it on almost every popular distribution platform. It’s nice to see an indie developer do so well.
Have you played Limbo? Would you consider picking it up on your iOS device?

One of the most beautiful games in recent memory can now be played directly in your web browser.
You have to give it to Google – they’re certainly pushing the limits when it comes to developing online technologies. Their last round of innovation, known as Native Client, allows high-end programs to run on the simple Chrome browser through some sort of coding magic that I’m clearly not smart enough to understand.
However Native Client works, it has created an environment that allows Chrome to become a window through which top-notch games are played.  And SuperGiant Games seems to be the first major developer onbard, announcing that they’ve ported their hit arcade game Bastion to the service.
Naturally, your system specs still play a large role in how well the game plays, but having it wired through the browser means you can access the game from practically anywhere. Check it out in the Chrome Web Store to get an idea of how well it runs on your system – if you like what you see, you can pick the game up for $14.99.
Bastion is more of an experience than a game, and if you haven’t played it, I would highly recommend you give it a shot, if not in Chrome then through Steam or XBLA. In the meantime, it’s going to be interesting to watch how developers use Google’s latest bit of technology – perhaps more big titles will see release soon?

Fresh from the rumor mill – Xenoblade may be heading west, but only as a GameStop exclusive.
Gamers have been clamoring for a North American release of the epic Xenoblade Chronicles, but up until recently, Nintendo had been pretty firm in their refusal to bring the game overseas. As of today, however, the future of the title seems to be in flux, with NeoGAF reporting that Chronicles may in fact see a North American release, albeit as a GameStop exclusive.
The story broke as the result of a leaked internal screenshot from a GameStop store, and the chain has long been known for guessing/predicting release dates both correctly and very, very incorrectly. That being said, Nintendo seems to be stoking the flames of rumor, and has recently begun to add Xenoblade images to its Facebook page.
There has been no official confirmation from either GameStop or Nintendo, so we’ll just have to wait and see how this whole thing plays out. If the information does turn out to be true, look for Xenoblade Chronicles to hit shelves near you in April of 2012.
Would you like to see Xenoblade come to North America? Do you think making it an exclusive is the right plan?

The anticipated PS Vita game contains only three tracks and five cars. Weak.
A few lucky individuals in the Japanese gaming press had the chance to play the PlayStation Vita’s upcoming version of Ridge Racer, and while the reports paint the controls and graphics in a positive light, they also note that the game is pretty limited when it comes to content.
Based on the current version of the game, Vita’s Ridge Racer will ship with three tracks, all of which are remakes from previous Ridge Racer games, and only five different cars. CVG, reporting on the story, notes that there will probably be DLC content, but the in-box game seems alarmingly limited. You can run the courses backwards, but that hardly seems like a substitute for more on-disc content.
The game will be priced below normal Vita games, so that’s some consolation to Ridge Racer fans. Still, it’s not a great precedent for the future of games – slightly cheaper, but limited titles aimed at filling in the blanks with DLC. Most Vita games run around £50, but Ridge Racer will land at about £33 – not necessarily a huge enough difference to justify such a small title.
Also, the game apparently runs at only 30fps? Overall, it doesn’t sound like Ridge Racer is shaping up to be the exciting title some people thought – limited courses, limited cars, and limited frame rates mar what should be a great experience.
Would you buy a racing game with only three courses?

Downloadable maps are now available for the Xbox 360 shooter, free of charge.
If you downloaded the Horde Command Pack earlier this month, you’ve probably already had a chance to enjoy some of the new multiplayer Gears of War 3 maps. But if you chose not to purchase the DLC, don’t worry – you can access the maps as of today without paying a dime.
The Booster Map Pack, which went live today, includes all of the maps released with the Horde Command Pack including Blood Drive, Rustlong, Clocktower, Bulletmarch and Azura. Of course, the free DLC doesn’t include the Horde fortifications or weapon skins, nor does it include the extra characters found in the Command Pack.
Still, it’s nice to see that Epic Games is finding a way to cash in on DLC without leaving a significant number of its fans out in the cold. If you can’t afford the map packs, you’ll still be able to experience them with your friends minus a few extras features. Nice work, Epic! Also, players should keep an eye out for the next GoW DLC pack, RAAM’s Shadow, due on December 13.
Are you going to download the Booster Map Pack, or did you already purchase the Command Pack? Or neither?

Now’s a good time to pick up a few cheap titles from the digital distributor, assuming you have an Android device.
Need some new games but a little tight on cash? If you’re an Android gamer, Gameloft has you covered over the holiday weekend. They’re offering a daily giveaway on specific titles, as well as super-reduced pricing on every single one of their current Android games – assuming you know where to go.
Here’s the deal: If you follow Gameloft’s Android Twitter, you can keep an eye out for their announcement regarding free games. Each day, a new game will be announced and you’ll have two hours to pick it up. If you follow developers on Twitter, this doesn’t really require any effort beyond what you’d be doing anyway.
In addition to the free games deal, Gameloft has dropped the prices of all of their Android games to $0.99 (U.S. and Canada only) – all you have to do is access the games from the actual Gameloft site and not the Android Market.

What, like you’re actually going to spend time with your family this week?
A couple of interesting updates are headed to the Nintendo eShop over the next few weeks. As of the 24th, you’ll be able to download Metroid II: Return of Samus directly to your Nintendo 3DS, Pushmo is scheduled for December and Sakura Samurai: Art of the Sword is aimed at January.
The new releases are likely intended to cement the 3DS as a system worth owning, although Pushmo and Sakura Samurai are pretty obscure titles. That being said, Metroid II was one of the best games that ever showed up on the original GameBoy, and it’s certainly worth a look.
Nintendo is making an effort to bring more content to the Nintendo 3DS in the hopes of making it more desirable - the primary complaint with the device (besides the lack of a second analog stick) is that there simply aren’t enough good games currently available.
While most 3DS owners would probably prefer to see some new games released, ports of old classics will just have to do for now – Mario Kart 7 is the last big release of the year.
Is Metroid II enough to sell you a 3DS? I doubt it.

Hey PlayStation gamers – you’re finally getting that thing EA said you’d get, and all it took was a class action lawsuit.
We talked previously about EA’s claim that the PlayStation 3 version of Battlefield 3 would come packed with the classic Battlefield 1943, and the subsequent failure to follow through on that promise. While there was never any official advertising regarding the bonus and it was mostly limited to Sony president Jack Tretton’s statement at E3, gamers still took it pretty seriously.
After the game failed to show up on the disc and DICE explained that PS3 owners would get “early” access to DLC instead, people sort of lost their minds.
A group of gamers filed a class-action lawsuit against the gaming giant, though their purported goal was simply to get copies of the game they were originally promised. It looks like the legal method was successful, as EA has folded and announced that they’ll make Battlefield 1943 free of charge. If you live in Europe, you can download it on the 26th. U.S. gamers have to wait until December 10, and Asian markets can access the game on December 17.
If I worked at EA, I’d be pretty pissed at Jack Tretton right now. It was his promise that ended in a lawsuit, as I can’t remember anyone from EA or DICE ever promising the free copy of Battlefield 1943.
So here’s the question of the day – is a games publisher responsible for the promises of a guy that works at another company? If Shigeru Miyamoto promises that every copy of Halo comes with a free sandwich, can we sue 343 when it doesn’t happen?
What do you think?
