Religion Returns to Civilization V

2K Games is sick of your people being godless heathens.

Civilization V stripped a number of elements from previous Civilization titles, resulting in an experience that was more streamlined and a little less intimidating for new players. While the result was no doubt a more accessible Civilization V, some hardcore players felt that Civ V offered less in the way of depth than its predecessors. 2K Games is looking to change that perception with the just-announced Gods and Kings expansion.

The days of orgies and vomitoriums are coming to a close, as religion is about to bounce its way back into the lives of your people. The Gods and Kings expansion brings promises of the afterlife and a few other familiar mechanics to your digital settlements.

Here’s a quick look at what you can expect to see when the expansion launches in spring:

13 new buildings

9 new wonders

27 new units

New tech

9 new civilizations

3 new scenarios

Religion returns

Smarter AI

Enhanced diplomacy

Espionage returns

New city-state types, Mercantile and Religious

Overall, it’s a pretty massive expansion (as is the norm for Civilization). The addition of religion and espionage will dramatically change the way in which conflicts and friendships unfold.

...or is there? Okay, probably not.

Despite the rumours and websites that have been floating around like a memetic ball in space, Community Manager Chetf said in the recent Steam forums that the "codes" in the recent Portal 2 video were "set in the Portal 2 fiction" and that the websites are leading people to "being trolled." Chet went on to say that there "is no ARG" and that "there has been no directive from Gabe to leak anything. That is all false."

After years of teasing out Half Life 3 with small clues like the Borealis ship and the recent sighting of the HL3 shirt being worn by Valve members, there has to be some kind of people working on it, in a pseudo-Aperture labs scenario. Just some guys huddled away in white lab coats looking over old Valve Games and looking at terrible new games from other developers knowing what to do and what not to do.

Gabe visits them once a month and then throughs their lab results at them and says "More Perfect!" and they get confused because it's not a proper sentence but when they plead, Gabe let's loose the knock-out gas and then waits another month to return and comment again...so yes, this is either a dismount from all the rumours so they can focus on other games, or they really are planning something for E3 next year that will blow everyone's freaking mind.

Blizzard: Mists of Pandaria is Very Serious, Indeed

Looks like the fan response may not have been exactly what the World of Warcraft developer expected, with lead designer Chris Metzen stepping in to assert the company’s seriousness.

Over the weekend, Blizzard made some pretty huge announcements regarding their numerous successful franchises. Fans got up-close looks at Diablo III and a weird DOTA game, in addition to tons of information about upcoming changes to World of Warcraft. Perhaps the biggest reveal, however, was the next World of Warcraft expansion, titled Mists of Pandaria.

Now, it’s worth noting that the Pandaren were originally introduced into Warcraft III as a joke, and it was only thanks to player demand that they actually ended up an integral part of the game. It’s also worth noting that Blizzard has used Pandaren as an April Fool’s joke for World of Warcraft in the past. So it’s no wonder that some players still feel like the entire thing is one huge joke, and many of the ones who don’t seem disappointed in what is collectively being called “lore-rape.”

Chris Metzen, lead designer at Blizzard and the man responsible for most of the memorable characters and lore in the Warcraft universe, stepped in to let people know that the company is deadly serious about their new expansion, and seemed to be asking players not to judge it without playing first.

After being asked whether Mists would see actual story content in the WoW lore panel on Sunday, Metzen had this to say:

“This is no joke. This is not a throw-away silly-silly ha ha funny expansion set; it is absolutely the next vital chapter and as things ratchet up, they’re gonna get really gnarly.”

I’ve talked previously about my feelings regarding this new expansion, so I’m not going to get too much into my opinion in this particular post. What I can say for sure is that if your first job after announcing a massive expansion to your incredibly successful game is convincing players that it’s not actually a joke, you might be on thin ice.

Blizzard is pretty good at what they do, so the best thing to do for now is wait and see how the expansion develops. Who knows, maybe they can take the Pandaren story and turn it into something really compelling. There could be some really cool dungeons hidden away on Pandaria, just waiting to be conquered.

Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One Trailer Showcases Co-Op Gameplay

Get a glimpse of what you and three friends can expect when you jump into the game’s co-op mode later this week.

The Ratchet & Clank series is known for its quirky sense of humor, hilarious items and action/platformer gameplay, but it looks like it may soon be known as one of the most interesting co-op platformers to date. Insomniac games has released a quick trailer showing off some of the things you can expect during the game’s co-op mode, which allows you and up to three friends to play as Ratchet, Clank, Doctor Nefarious and Captain Qwark.

From where I sit, this looks like a pretty good example of co-op done right. Rather than just dropping more players into the environment and adding a few enemies to up the challenge, Insomniac has included clear responsibilities for each of the player-controlled characters. In the trailer, for instance, we see that everyone has to work together to weight certain sides of a floating platform, or to create a barrier against a laser attack.

Game mechanics like these are what make co-op interesting, and Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One certainly looks as though it’s going to be a great co-op title. Sadly, it may get overlooked at first, since it shares its release date with the humungous Arkham City.

Co-op in All 4 One will be available both on and offline, so even if you can’t find three friends you’ll be able to hook up with someone via PSN.

Uncharted 3, Arkham City to be playable at next PlayStation Access event

The PlayStation Access event will unfold its next run later this month, and is set to bring a truckload of goodies for all who will come.

To Bristol, UK, that is. According to Sony, the next PA affair will be kicking off on September 29th and will run until October 1st. Included in their line-ups are some of the much-awaited AAA titles for the PlayStation 3, such as Uncharted 3, Starhawk, and Ratchet & Clank: All4One. And that's just for their first-party line-up.

For third-party titles, they'll be bringing in Batman: Arkham City, Battlefield 3, Dark Souls, Assassin's Creed: Revelations, FIFA 12, Goldeneye 007, and even the newly released Resistance 3.

The best part about this? They're all going to be playable! On top of that, Lethal Bizzle will also be taking the stage on two nights of the event. Oh, who are we kidding? That's just bonus, but really, having that awesome a line-up is already good enough as it is!

ESRB gives M rating to Rise of Nightmares for 'intense violence'

Kinect-horror title Rise of Nightmares gets an M (for Mature) rating from the ESRB, and unsurprisingly so. After all, it contains what the ratings board describes as "intense violence".

And that's on top of all the blood, gore, partial nudity strong language, and suggestive themes present in the game.

Said ESRB of Rise of Nightmares:

This is a horror-adventure game in which players assume the role of an American tourist who must rescue his wife from a deranged scientist. From a first-person perspective, players use brass knuckles, knives, hatchets, and chainsaws to kill zombie-like creatures and disfigured monsters inside a mansion environment. Combat is highlighted by exaggerated sprays of blood, and damage often results in dismemberment or decapitation—stray body parts sometimes litter the ground.

Some sequences and cutscenes depict more intense acts of violence: a man screams loudly as spikes impale his body; a restrained character's hand is chopped off before he is killed; a character (cut in half) crawls away in a pool of blood; a soldier is ripped apart by a monster, causing blood to stain the screen.

During the course of the game, some female creatures are depicted in revealing outfits (e.g., 'pasties' that partially cover their breasts); in one sequence, a woman sits on the central character's chest and engages in suggestive dialogue (e.g., 'Oh, how I've thought of this—night after night. How I've missed these lips.'). Dialogue also includes phrases such as 'Best sex of my life.'/'Worst sex of my life,' 'f**k,' and 'sh*t.'

Kinect-horror title Rise of Nightmares gets an M (for Mature) rating from the ESRB, and unsurprisingly so.
