Sony is ready for the influx of new Vita users, but may have made a costly mistake.
As of this morning, the PlayStation Store was flush with content for the newly released PS Vita. Sony dropped a metric crap-ton of new content onto the store, most of which is engineered to interact with or be played on the Vita. You’ll find new games, new apps and a few demos—plenty of content to keep you busy for your first few hours with the device.
There are three “augmented-reality” games currently available; Cliff Diving, Fireworks and Table Soccer all use the Vita’s cameras to detect player movement, which then influences gameplay. New games include Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack and Touch My Katamari. There’s also a new Twitter app, full Flickr support and Netflix, all for the PS Vita.
One curious tidbit has been raised by attentive gamers, though: some of the PS Vita demos are labeled as “PS Vita Game” instead of as demos, and are the full size of the actual game. There is speculation that Sony may have pulled another “Undead Knights” and accidentally released full games as demos, which would mean that you can currently pick up Rayman Origins, Dungeon Hunter, Hustle Kings, Little Deviants and others free of charge.
If you picked up a Vita at launch, now would be the time to check out those demos to see if Sony screwed up. Let us know how it goes in the comments.

Despite an ongoing rivalry, EA has nothing but positive remarks for the “games as services” philosophy Activision has adapted.
Call of Duty Elite is a premium subscription service that launched with Modern Warfare 3. The service comes with a few perks, such as future DLC packs and advanced clan support. And while many gamers lamented CoD Elite as yet another cash grab, Electronic Arts sees it as an opportunity in the making.
In an earnings call with investors this morning, EA CEO John Riccitiello fired off a quick compliment to Activision, EA’s primary competition in the FPS market. He noted that adding a subscription to an FPS game (MW3) was a “best-in-class performance,” and that EA would be looking for similar ways to further monetize its franchises. Battlefield Elite, anyone?
The “games as services” movement is picking up steam, with companies like Activision leading the charge. Publishers are on the hunt for any method of expanding revenue, and the massive success of CoD Elite has gone a long way towards proving that the subscription model works.
What do you think? Would you pay for a CoD Elite-type service on Battlefield or Mass Effect 3?

THQ hasn’t been doing great over the last few months, and this nasty letter from a former employee doesn’t make things look any better.
THQ, the company behind Saints Row: The Third, had a tough 2011. The company was in such dire straits that rumors floated around about it canceling its entire 2014 lineup, rumors the company vehemently denied. This morning we received word that THQ was shifting its strategies yet again, this time focusing more on its core franchises over third party licensing.
It’s hard to get a bead on exactly what’s happening with THQ. Rumors and sales indicate the company is in serious trouble despite the success of Saints Row, but the company refuses to admit that they have any sort of problem. Only one person seems to be willing to comment on the state of the company – an alleged former employee with an obvious bone to pick.
In a letter written to THQ’s Board of Directors, CEO Brian Farrell as well as the general public and a collection of gaming news sites, this “Formerly Mismanaged” employee rattles off a laundry lists of complaints about the company.
The letter essentially claims that THQ’s problems stem from mismanagement and a Board of Directors that has no clue how to strategically run a gaming company. It gives examples like acquiring game studios with no plan on how to utilize their talents (then later shutting them down), investing money into shrinking niche markets, the company’s refusal to dump a CEO that has tanked its stock price and high-paid executives making enormous mistakes that call their competency into question. The disastrous uDraw tablet also makes an appearance.
These allegations of management incompetency surface just a few days before THQ announces its current financial standing on February 2, and things certainly don’t look good. One analyst has gone on the record by stating that THQ, without some sort of financial windfall, with run out of cash near the middle of this year.
You can read the letter in its (extremely long) entirety below:
[JoyStiq]
"To:
THQ Board of Directors
Lawrence Burstein
James Whims, Gigex, Inc.
Henry DeNero, Arcturus Capital
Brian Dougherty, AirSet, Inc.
Jeffrey Griffiths , Lumber Liquidators
From:
Current and Ex-Employees, Shareholders, and The Public
Dear THQ Board,
I am an ex-employee at THQ. I saw the tweet-started headlines over the past week from an "industry expert." This expert is one who I and my friends and co-workers in the industry have never heard of after a long time in the field. I had been reading the various following articles and accounts and it generated sympathy for friends both recently laid off and currently still there. I thought it would be a good idea to send a note with their input. This note has honest facts and thoughts about THQ and the current problems there. Most of these facts are public knowledge and they have been confirmed by public records or can be confirmed by current and former THQ staff there both before and after my and their time.
I have long felt the need to explain to outsiders how this beaten-down company has wound up in this position. It is to the point where having it on your resume is not a point in your favor. And that shouldn't be the case. I'm/We're sending this note anonymously because some of us are still awaiting final checks and others know how little corporations like employees who air their dirty laundry. We feel the need to say something to combat the partial misinformation being written.
THQ had been known through the years for having a formula. They find a hot license, make a cheap game, barely advertise it, and make money. This formula worked during the Playstation and Xbox and Gameboy days and made the company a lot of cash. Unfortunately, THQ's old guard executives seem to be stuck trying to manage the company the same way they did back then and haven't realized the industry has changed.
The beginning of the end came years ago as Brian Farrell lead an executive team to acquire a large number of studios. A large amount of cash was used in the acquisition or setup of game developers with different degrees of talent. The problem was they were bought without strategic reasoning or specific plan on to use them. So after awhile another large amount of money was spent as those studios failed and were sold off and shut down. The executive team at the time were an entirely different group of people with one key exception in the CEO. The CEO/the then executive team wasted the cash that the company had built up with these massive investments and selloffs.
The studio purchase errors were not helped by the mistakes in the licensing deals that were signed by the same CEO. Millions and millions of dollars were wasted on acquiring licenses at the same time the kids, family, casual business was declining at a rapid rate. Instead of slowing those acquisitions he overpaid for more of them until again cash was wasted in paying for brands that didn't sell well anymore.
The mistakes in decisions and cash losses triggered wave after wave of layoffs. In the most recent wave, about 40 people lost their jobs this past December through no fault of their own. The reason why is the chronic and constant mismanagement of their company. The fact is that the CEO and executive committee were so focused on trying to hit an unrealistic financial goal that they bet everything on an extremely risky proposition in the uDraw tablet. When they lost, they further displayed their lack of management skills by not having a contingency plan. Three weeks after the game launched, an entire business unit was wiped out when it didn't meet its goal due to relying on that one product to hit an unrealistic target.
After the layoffs many ex-employees walked around shell-shocked and trying to figure out who was responsible. They came to the understanding that most of us do after leaving the company. The issue with THQ has never been one of lack of staff creativity, intellect or business intelligence. It all rests of the failure of its management team and you the Board of Directors.
This Board has allowed the Brian Farrell, the CEO, the ongoing ability to take a cash-rich profitable company and drive it from a $30 share price down to around $.70 without acting despite numerous mistakes that even for those lacking business training, could see were errors. Even without glaring mistakes how can the same CEO stay in charge after a 99% share price loss? Aside from the board, who is responsible for the current situation and who is accountable for the current and future job losses at the company? When you ask the recently departed who are a good source of information, you get the same answers. This uDraw failure is the largest and most recent one in a string of them that were hushed over and hidden. The answer aside from the Board is the current executive team that allowed this uDraw implosion to happen.
Brian Farrell, CEO with a 2011 salary of $1,289,558, for a lack of business intelligence or fiscal accountability. A vocal inside group pointed out the mistake of trying to launch a year-old product that received almost no software support in the last 12 months. Instead of listening and having a back-up plan, he went ahead and invested a ridiculous amount of money in the manufacturing and advertising of the product and failed miserably. It is passed time for him to go. We are wondering what is taking so long for you to act. We have been wondering this same question for a long time.
Martin Good, EVP and head of Kids, Family, Casual with a 2011 salary of $1,198,023, for bringing no strategic thought or business sense to the role. He was brought out from Australia sales to replace an outgoing head of the business unit and rapidly displayed a complete lack of leadership skills, vision, and any sort of analytical sense. Looking at his compensation package, he is an excellent negotiator as his salary is higher than anyone's except for the CEO. On the plus side he lost his job with the rest of those laid off. On the minus side, he will be floating down on a golden parachute while the rest of the former employees scramble to look for jobs in this challenging environment. Most of those jobs will be at studios in other parts of the country, so they will be forced to relocate their families in the middle of their childrens school years. It is incredible that he made this level of income while doing such a poor job, but it serves as a reflection of the lack of Brian Farrell's ability to staff well and manage.
Paul Pucino, CFO with a 2011 salary of $674,855, for not planning for this possibility and having a safety net or a plan to cover THQ just in case of failure. We have a line of credit that we likely used to buy the plastic that is not selling to customers. It is like taking a cash advance to buy THQ stock and just as worthless of an investment. Paul is known as an absentee executive who is missing when business situations gets complicated. While he was in the loop at the point of the risk, with the following failure he has been clearly unavailable. It is another example of Brian Farrell's inability to staff.
Ian Curran, EVP and head of global publishing with a 2011 salary of $1,037,047, for not flagging an unrealistic sales goal to the CEO or the Board when a big part of the corporation felt the numbers were unrealistic. He blindly held up an unachievable target and didn't act when multiple people told him he was aiming to high and out of step with the marketplace. If a sales executive's job is to anticipate the market, he has done a poor job of it. Another example of Brian Farrell not being able to find the right people for the right job.
Ed Kauffman, EVP of Legal and Business Affairs who clearly was signing bad deals on licensed products, not factoring in the changes in the business and being more critical with financial terms with partners. uDraw by itself cannot possibly explain the companies poor financial health. It is a combination of that product and a string of bad licensed deals that the company took on against better judgement. While Brain Farrell would logically be the final decisionmaker for deals, Kauffman is either unpersuasive in his arguments to not do them or supported them. Either situation equates to another example of poor staffing choices by the CEO.
uDraw was failure and the only people to blame are the people listed above. THQ and its current financial situation is also their responsibility. And they were paid around $4.5 million dollars for their poor decisions. If there is any doubt we would recommend talking to current and former staff to get the straight story. Don't read this note as bitterness on their part, but more as long overdue truth.
So, Board, it is time. Passed time for you to act and passed time for you to do something about the mismanagement that has gone on for too many years. We've watched the stock from the outside and read the comments and the reason why the company is valued so low despite its sales is because of this underqualified management team.
Board it is time for you to act before your names are added to the list above of things that must change.
Sincerely,
The Formerly Mismanaged"

Is Anonymous in the right by taking out websites in response to government actions?
This last week has certainly been interesting in terms of anti-piracy events. While the controversial SOPA and PIPA bills have been effectively shelved, the U.S. government still took a major bite out of online file sharing by shutting down Megaupload.com. If you’ve never heard of the site, Megaupload was a notorious cache of pirated material, a place where downloaders could access movies, music and television shows free of charge.
Anonymous, that volatile pocket of the web known for mass action, did not take kindly to the removal of Megaupload from the web. In fact, the organization (if you can call it that) went on a booming offensive, deleting CBS.com, toppling the U.S. Department of Justice website and shutting down the FTC’s online presence. It was a massive effort on the part of Anons, one that they have promised to continue.
But one has to wonder if hacking websites or shutting them down via DDOS attacks is a valid form of protest. Sure, it makes your point, but it also infringes on the rights of every person that depends on those websites for information or entertainment.
So today’s sound off begs this simple question: Do you think hacking-type protests are an appropriate response to disagreeable government actions?

5th Cell is prepping a brand new platformer, set for release this Thursday.
5th Cell recently brought its Nintendo DS hit, Scribblenauts, to Apple’s iOS software. The game was a smashing success, and even managed to topple Angry Birds from the top software slot for a couple of weeks. With performance like that, it’s no wonder that the development company is targeting their newest game, Run Roo Run, directly at the iOS market.
As you can see, Run Roo Run operates in much the same way as Robot Unicorn attack - your character automatically runs across the screen, and you have to collect goodies and avoid hazards as you go. The one major difference is that in lieu of scrolling across an infinite screen, your auto-running will be limited to one screen length. 5th Cell dubs this setup “microplatforming.”
You can expect to find a whopping 420 levels on launch day, with increasingly complex and difficult problems. Plus, you’ll unlock “extreme” versions of every level as you go, giving you a total of 840 levels to play. 5th Cell has promised 10 new levels every week, free of charge.
Not too shabby for mobile gamers, eh? Watch for Run Roo Run on the iTunes Store tomorrow, January 12.

The gaming luminary is developing a brand new, top-secret project for the Wii U.
Shigeru Miyamoto is a busy guy. He’s in charge of pretty much every important franchise at Nintendo, and has confirmed that he’s currently working on Pikmin 3 and Luigi’s Mansion for the Wii U. However, he seems to be working on a brand new franchise in addition to the games that have already been announced.
In an interview with Zoomin Games, Miyamoto discussed the expectations that have been placed on him by fans, and how he strives to live up to their demands. He also noted that despite the pressure to hit grand slams, he has no fear of developing all-new project.
The legendary developer is the mind behind some of the biggest characters in the industry, most notably Super Mario. Anything he makes usually ends up being well received and well remembered, but it’s been quite some time since he had his hands in a completely original property. It will be interesting to see what he’s up to.
There’s no official word on what Miyamoto is developing or when it will come out – stay tuned for updates as they roll out. In the meantime, do you think Miyamoto is over-hyped, or that he truly is one of the best in the world?

Sid Meier-helmed Firaxis Games drops some details on its upcoming strategy game, and essentially explode the Internet.
I don’t know if you browse other gaming news sites or follow any on Twitter, but if you do, there’s no way you missed the biggest bombshell of the day – Firaxis has officially announced a new game, titled XCOM: Enemy Unknown.
The studio, known for its perfectly tuned strategy titles, has long been at work on the game but remained relatively silent on its development. XCOM is being developed as a “full-on strategy” game, one that will reportedly “stay true” to some of the classic elements in the original franchise titles released throughout the late 90s.
XCOM is designed as a straight strategy title, with scenarios that demand an understanding of a broad battlefield as well as delicate micromanaging. Essentially, you’ll be in charge of a massive army as they fight to repel an invading alien force.
There’s no official release date in place, though Game Informer has a preview of the game in their upcoming issue and states XCOM: Enemy Unknown will hit shelves sometime in the fall. Oh, and it’s coming to consoles!

The basic idea is simple: ensure that everyone who touches your device has the best experience possible, and doesn’t have enough time to hit any of the snags or bugs you’re trying to get worked out. Sony was very careful about making the Vita available for reviews and previews, but now that the device has hit shelves, some of the things the company failed to announce are hitting the web.
For example, the Vita cannot charge via USB. Though the device includes a proprietary USB cable for transferring data to and from the PS3, if you want to charge the device you’ll have to connect it to a wall outlet. Obviously, this isn’t a huge problem, but it could put a damper on your experiences when it comes to inter-device connectivity.
News is also breaking across the web that many Japanese customers are experiencing problems with their Vita, with the most commonly reported problem being unresponsive touchscreens and full system crashes. Additionally, we’re seeing intermittent reports of the screen completely failing, but it’s tough to get a bead on how widespread the issue may be. You can see an example in the image attached to this post, but without numbers it’s hard to tell if this is a big deal or not. Some systems are bound to fail, regardless of the product quality.
New hardware is always tough to nail down, so it’s expected that Vita will have a few problems. We’ll keep you posted as more information rolls in – for the most part the system seems to be doing relatively well, though it hasn’t sold out in Japan quite yet. Memory cards, on the other hand, are selling like hotcakes.

Yes, you read that right. $100 for a pretend car. But it’s a really nice pretend car.
EA has really been on a roll over the last few weeks when it comes to being a bunch of money-grubbing jerks. First, they add a subscription fee to their Tetris app, then they have the gall to charge people $60 for a Theme Park rollercoaster. Now, it looks like they’ve managed to one-up even themselves, by offering a $100 premium car in the currently free-to-play racing MMO, Need for Speed World.
Sure, it makes sense that some cars would cost money. The game is F2P, after all, and EA has to make some cash somewhere to keep the game profitable. But charging people more for one car than they’d pay for a brand new AAA title sure doesn’t seem like a good move. Some morons will probably buy one, but overall it isn’t a great approach from a community perspective.
The offending car, known as the Koenigsegg CCX "Elite" Edition, doesn’t seem to be that much better than any other car – in fact, every feature seems to be purely aesthetic. You’d basically be driving a sign that says, “I AM BAD WITH MONEY.”  This is only the first of several such “premium” vehicles; most cars for NFS World are much more reasonably priced.
Part of me wants to be upset with EA’s audacity. However, it’s not like they’re forcing anyone to buy a $100 car – if you end up purchasing this thing, it’s no one’s fault but your own. Plus, the $100 car is great from a marketing perspective; you get free advertising from all of the game news sites as they lose their mind over the price. Well played, EA.
Would you spend $100 on a digital car?

Pre-Order Postal 3 now.
It looks like the Postal Dude will be making a Christmas delivery.
I spoke earlier in the year to Tim Wambolt, level designer and developer of the new Postal game and with much charm and vigour, the game is up for pre-order from the official Running with Scissors site. The cover is a classically comic (literally) look on  to Postal Dude being the classic American hero in the only way to get a box copy of the game.
The press release gives us an insight to how much has changed over the time when the project started till now. The first inklings of a Postal 3 was back when Cheney was in charge, Bin Laden was making more YouTube videos than Phillip De Franco. “Oh how the world has changed” Desi continued; “Peace, Joy and POSTAL III to everyone around the world”.  You can currently buy the game at PostalGames.com http://www.postalgames.com/
Of course, the release gets quite serious as one of Running with Scissors best men, an editor by the name of Bill Kunkel sadly passed away back in September. We hope the developers at RWS and Bill's family have an amazing Christmas and a happy New Year and that Postal 3 sells a hell of a lot of copies.

Download EA’s vertigo-inducing parkour simulator free on your iOS device.
Mirror’s Edge was a bold game that didn’t really get a fair shake. Sure, it had problems, but it was an interesting refresh on a genre that’s frankly desperately in need of innovation. The game took many of the conventions of the first-person niche and literally turned them upside-down. If you didn’t get a chance to play Mirror’s Edge when it first game out, you can give a simplified, side-scrolly version of it today, free of charge.
As part of EA’s “Daily Deals” program, the price on the iOS version of Mirror’s Edge has been dropped to a mere zero dollars. The app isn’t universal, so you’ll need to be sure to download it on each of your devices today if you want to play both the iPhone and iPad versions.
The iOS version of Mirror’s Edge is very different from the version launched on consoles two years ago, focusing on side-scrolling, semi-3D action but retaining much of the running, jumping and climbing familiar to fans of the series. Combat is admittedly a bit on the sloppy side, but hey, it’s a free game.
Did you enjoy Mirror’s Edge? What about the mobile version?

The man that started it all is handing Minecraft over to some very capable hands.
Mark Persson, known as Notch in most gamer circles, is something of an indie legend. Building a game in his spare (and then full) time, he somehow stumbled into huge piles of money and his own development company. It’s essentially the dream of every small developer, but the folks at Mojang actually lived it.
Now, with Minecraft officially out to the public and development of the game shifting to patches and updates, Persson has decided to give up the position of lead developer. Persson is passing his responsibilities to Jens Bergensten, who has been with Mojang for quite some time and seems plenty capable of handling the franchise. Persson noted that Bergensten will have full control over the game, which includes its design and future development.
So what’s Notch going to do now that he’s not the guy in charge of Minecraft? Take a vacation. Perrson mentioned in his blog that he’s going to take a break from development for a bit (probably going on one of those much-maligned vacations), then head back to work on new projects while still contributing to Minecraft.
The game is already a massive success so it’s questionable whether Mojang really needs Notch at the top, but his interaction with the community is certainly second-to-none. Time will tell of Bergensten is capable of the same level of engagement, which was a huge factor in the initial success of Minecraft.
How do you feel about Perrson’s departure? Is Minecraft in good hands?

Ó

Two of the biggest names in mobile gaming have no interest in seeing a ratings system levied against them.
ESRB ratings are both good and bad for the games industry. On the one hand, they keep mature content away from young kids, but on the other, they hinder developmental freedom by forcing developers to target certain age brackets with their titles. If you ask people for opinions on what the ESRB does, you’ll probably find one opinion for each person you talk to. But, regardless of our personal opinions, the ESRB has a major influence over the world of game making.
Looking to expand its role into the rapidly growing mobile market, the ESRB, working with the CTIA, recently developed a rating system for mobile games, similar to what is already in place for other games. Microsoft, Sprint, Verizon and a few other big names are behind the new ratings system, but Google and Apple have officially declined to participate. This means the iTunes Store and Android Market will remain ESRB-free, for now.
It makes perfect sense from the outside – the big names that are onboard aren’t app companies, they’re mostly cellular providers. Google and Apple are really the only two companies that stand to lose anything with a new ratings system, with the possible exception of Microsoft. Of course, Microsoft is already participating with the ESRB on non-mobile games, so their hands are probably tied. Still, you have to wonder if this decision will have any major impact on either mobile marketplace.
What do you think of Apple and Google’s decision to keep the ESRB out of their games? Would you do the same if you were in charge?
