Yet another high-profile dev starts a mobile games studio.
It seems like every week we get news of some prominent game developer firing up his own mobile games studio. Thank s to the low barrier of entry and small team size required for mobile games, pretty much anyone can cook up a mobile game (and reap the benefits).
Alex Seropian, co-founder of Bungie and the creator of the insanely popular Halo franchise, is the next guy on the list. His new studio, dubbed Industrial Toys, has just gone live and is promising to focus on “mobile games for core gamers.”  The mission statement for the company goes on to state that games should be “accessible without sacrificing quality,” a very good point, indeed.
Naturally, the company is still in its infancy and no new IPs have been announced. But we’ll keep you posted as details emerge. Seropian’s last projects were with his very own Wideload Games, which developed Stubbs the Zombie and Hail to the Chimp.
What do you think? Can mobile be a home for core gamers?

Surprise! Sony screwed everyone. Again.
Sometime last year, when PS Vita hype was at max and the system had yet to fall embarrassingly on its face in Japan, Sony revealed the UMD Passport system. The service essentially provided a way for PSP gamers to bring the UMD games they owned directly to the Vita once they upgraded to the new system.
Now that Vita is freely available here in the States, some users have noticed that the Passport service has somehow vanished into thin air. While it was available with Japanese Vitas, it doesn’t appear to have made the jump over the Pacific. Sony apparently forgot to tell everyone in the United States (and in Europe) until the device’s launch day.
Citing a lack of demand for PSP games and the very “reasonable” prices of UMD games on the PSN store, Sony exec Shuhei Yoshida confirmed that the company had no plans to make Passport available either in the U.S. or in Europe. He noted that Sony doesn’t see much value in bringing the Passport system to the U.S., since PSP games are so affordable here.
Did you get that? Sony says that games are so cheap on PSN, there’s no reason you shouldn’t buy them twice.
Honestly, is anyone surprised by this news?

Sony is ready for the influx of new Vita users, but may have made a costly mistake.
As of this morning, the PlayStation Store was flush with content for the newly released PS Vita. Sony dropped a metric crap-ton of new content onto the store, most of which is engineered to interact with or be played on the Vita. You’ll find new games, new apps and a few demos—plenty of content to keep you busy for your first few hours with the device.
There are three “augmented-reality” games currently available; Cliff Diving, Fireworks and Table Soccer all use the Vita’s cameras to detect player movement, which then influences gameplay. New games include Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack and Touch My Katamari. There’s also a new Twitter app, full Flickr support and Netflix, all for the PS Vita.
One curious tidbit has been raised by attentive gamers, though: some of the PS Vita demos are labeled as “PS Vita Game” instead of as demos, and are the full size of the actual game. There is speculation that Sony may have pulled another “Undead Knights” and accidentally released full games as demos, which would mean that you can currently pick up Rayman Origins, Dungeon Hunter, Hustle Kings, Little Deviants and others free of charge.
If you picked up a Vita at launch, now would be the time to check out those demos to see if Sony screwed up. Let us know how it goes in the comments.

Why make new games when people will just keep buying the old ones?
Fans have been on a rampage trying to get Square Enix to remake Final Fantasy VII, but the company doesn’t seem to care. Instead, it has elected to bring the PlayStation 2’s Final Fantasy X to modern consoles, with an HD version due sometime this year. Unfortunately for fans of the franchise, details were scarce at the time of the project’s announcement.
New info has emerged that helps clarify what exactly Final Fantasy X HD is all about. And if you’re hoping for a complete, next-gen remake, you’re going to be sorely disappointed. Shinji Hashimoto, producer for Square Enix, has confirmed that the upcoming re-release is a re-mastering of the original a la ICO or Metal Gear Solid HD.
So it looks like the Final Fantasy X you remember will be present in full in this upcoming release, with a few minor upgrades to make it worth plopping down your cash. Not the best news in the world, but not terrible either.
Is it worth buying the same games over and over again for minor graphical upgrades?

Why are games so easy now?
When Dark Souls came out last year, it was hailed as one of the most difficult games ever made. Boasting brutal mechanics and punishing scenarios, Dark Souls was a rare return to the challenging button mashes of the past, in which luck and repetition had as much to do with success as the player’s skill level.
One of the reasons that Dark Souls garnered so much attention is that difficulty in games has effectively died out. Games just aren’t as hard as they used to be—there’s no denying this fact. There are several reasons for the change; games are longer, control mechanisms are deeper and more people play games than just a select few hardcore gamers. But one of the big reasons appears to be that developers just don’t think about making things hard anymore.
Most games have some sort of optional “hard” mode. However, it’s rare that snapping a game into hard mode has any real effect on gameplay besides making your character easier to kill, and enemies harder. Unfortunately, “hard” has become a loose translation for “cheap”; no real care seems to be placed on balancing the varied difficulties to present a meaningful difference.
Games need to be harder, but developers need to actually create experiences that are challenging. Cheap doesn’t cut it. Simply bumping an enemy’s health pool up and reducing accessible ammo isn’t any sort of fundamental change. I’m sure you can think of more than a few culprits when it comes to the hard/cheap boundary.
Devs need to step it up, or they risk losing the hardcore crowd.

Bikinis are coming to Soul Calibur. At least Namco is being honest.
Enjoying Soul Calibur V? Of course not – it doesn’t hit shelves until January 31. But just because the game hasn’t been released yet doesn’t mean there can’t be DLC, right? Right. Namco Bandai has announced the first round of Soul Calibur V DLC, set to land at the same time as the game’s European release on February 3.
So what’s in this first batch of DLC, you ask? According to Namco Bandai, the DLC contains “exotic costumes.” Loosely translated, this means face paint, wigs and yes, bikinis. While it seems a little ridiculous to introduce bikinis into a fighting game, this is, after all, Soul Calibur. It’s good to see Namco embracing its target demographic.
This pack is the first of three set for February release, with the second landing February 14 and the third landing February 28. The next two updates contain accessories like clothing, masks and “breast plates,” and all three updates are packed with some classic Soul Calibur music. Each DLC pack is priced at 160 MS Points/ €1.99.
What do you think of day one DLC? It doesn’t seem so terrible when it’s purely aesthetic items.
Also, are you planning on buying any bikinis?

Find out what evils lurk in the special edition of Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.
It goes without saying that if you’re releasing a popular game, you almost have to create an additional collector’s edition with some extra goodies. This is certainly the case for The Witcher 2, which is scheduled to hit the Xbox 360 on April 17. The Dark Edition, which runs a relatively fair $79.99, is packed with the accoutrements we’ve come to expect from collector’s edition boxes.
Here’s what you’ll get with the Dark Edition version of the game:
World map
Quest book
Making-of DVD
Soundtrack
Stickers
Art book
Wolf head medallion
Pretty standard fare for a CE. Art book, soundtrack, some sort of game-related trinket. But that’s not all! Depending on where you pre-order the Dark Edition, you’ll also receive some of the following loot:
Comic book
Two wolf head t-shirts
Medallion keychain
Xbox Live Avatars
Avatar pet
No clue on what items will be available from what retailers, so stay tuned and we’ll update you as details emerge. In the meantime, are you planning on picking up Witcher 2 for the Xbox?

EA plans to include DLC download codes with series two of the Mass Effect action figure lineup.
Do you like Mass Effect? Do you like DLC? What about action figures? If you said yes to all three questions, then man have we got a deal for you. It looks like EA, the publisher behind Bioware’s upcoming space-RPG Mass Effect 3, has an interesting plan for delivering DLC to gamers: toys.
According to information posted by the Big Bad Toy Store, series two of the Mass Effect action figure series will come packaged with special codes, valid for special “in-game bonus content.” Every figure apparently comes with its own bit of DLC, so it’s safe to assume the updates are limited to weapons, armor and other small accessories.
Here’s a list of the figures coming in series two:
Miranda
Mordin
Garrus
Legion
There’s no information available on whether you’ll have to buy the toys to get this DLC, or if it will be made available to regular players without a penchant for plastic. In the meantime, it does seem to be a cool way to sell DLC – who wouldn’t want a mini Miranda on their desk?

Gamer scores 144 kills and 4 deaths in one MW3 match, and in the process demonstrates one of the game’s biggest problems.
Look, it’s 2012. Spawn trapping – the act of locking an opposing team into one spawn area and mercilessly camping them – simply shouldn’t be possible in games anymore. Developers, by now, should know how to circumvent this problem. However, the issue seems to have slipped the mind of devs over at Infinity Ward, as evidenced by this video:
In the clip, one MW3 player, with the help of his team, manages to summon a M.O.A.B. in just 48 seconds by peeking over a wall into the enemy spawn and absolutely wrecking the other team as they respawn helplessly. It’s a cheap tactic from any point of view, but the real amazing thing is that it’s even possible in a game that supposed to be one of the best shooters ever made.
This problem is rampant in certain MW3 game modes, and the developers are going to need to find some way to repair it if they want to keep the community happy and engaged. The players in the video aren’t necessarily cheating, so the only recourse is to prevent the problem from happening in the first place.
What do you think should be done to stop matches like this from taking place?

Ó

37 days after launch, Skyrim still has major problems on the PS3. Here’s what you can do to make things better.
Skyrim launched with its fair share of bugs and glitches, but none has been as devastating as the PlayStation 3’s save file problem. In short, the size of Skyrim’s save file and the way that file interacts with the PS3’s architecture create a situation in which the system struggles to keep up with your ever-expanding save, eventually dragging gameplay into a slow, laggy mess.
Bethesda attempted to fix the issue earlier this month, but many users are still experiencing the same issue. And while there’s no official fix to the problem (one could still be weeks away), there are a few things that have been reported to help alleviate the symptoms.
If you’re having trouble with Skyrim on your PS3, here are a few things you can try to make it run more smoothly:
Clear Space on Your Hard Drive: This is only effective if you wipe several gigabytes of installed games and is not guaranteed to positively impact Skyrim’s gameplay. Only test it if you’re not worried about re-installing games.
Turn off Auto-Save:  Turning off the auto-save function helps keep your overall save file size down, but probably won’t change issues you’re already experiencing. Still, it’s worth a shot.
Control Your File Size: Skyrim keeps track of everything you do, from leaving doors open to moving fruit around your house. Do what you can to leave the environment as undisturbed as possible and you’ll keep your save file down to a more manageable size.
Restart the PS3: No guarantees here either, but some players report that a quick restart can help limit frame rate issues for long play sessions. Always worth a shot, right?
What’s really amazing about this problem is that it somehow made it into the final version of the game. It’s astounding to think that no tester at Bethesda put enough time into the PlayStation 3 version to hit a bug that’s apparently affecting a very large sampling of the user base. Then again, you can’t always catch everything, right?
Let us know if you have troubles with your Skyrim install, and if any of these solutions help. In the meantime, how should Bethesda make this up to customers?

Did you pre-order Star Wars: The Old Republic? You’ll want to check out EA’s early access information.
Gamers that choose to pre-order the upcoming Star Wars-themed MMORPG, Star Wars: The Old Republic, will have access to the game a few days before the rest of the gaming populace. This is old news. What’s not old news, however, is the specific information regarding how that early access will operate, and when it will begin. Thanks to EA, we now have a detailed overview of what early adopters can expect.
Here’s the deal: If you pre-order SWTOR and register the pre-order code on the official website for the game, you can land yourself in the game up to seven days before its official launch. The date of your early access is determined by when you register your code, as EA is performing a staggered rollout, meaning the sooner you register, the more time you’ll have. The staggered rollout is likely an EA plan to keep servers manageable at the first crush of launch, or it could just be incentive to pre-order sooner rather than later.
Access starts on December 13 - EA will send you an email letting you know when your early access has been activated. And remember, even if you’re one of the several thousands of people that had your pre-order canceled by Wal-Mart, as long as you register the pre-order code, you’ll still get your early access to the game.
Star Wars: The Old Republic is due December 20, and is expected to be a major force in the world of MMOs. Have you pre-ordered a copy, or are you waiting to see how the game goes for everyone else?

A survey send to Assassin’s Creed fans list some potential times and locations for a new AC game. Where would you want to go?
Sure, Assassin’s Creed  has nailed down free-running and sneaky stabbing, but one of the most interesting facets of the franchise has always been its interactions with history. While the game boasts plenty of mindless assassinating and exploring, there’s always a significant historical tone to each game, as well as cameos from some of the most famous names in our collective past.
We’ve explored renaissance Italy, hung out in Constantinople before it became Istanbul, and skulked around during the Third Crusade, but where are we going next? That’s just the question posed by a survey from Empire State Gamers, sent out to a bunch of Assassin’s Creed fans. The survey asks where gamers think the next game should take place and poses some interesting options.
Check them out:
• The violent conflicts of the Imperial Dynasties in Medieval China
• The advent of the mighty British Empire during Victorian England
• The culmination of the Pharaoh Reign in Ancient Egypt
• The invasion of the Americas by the Spanish Conquistadors
• The confrontation between British colonists and native Americans during The American Revolution
• The overthrow of the Tsar Empire by the Communists during the Russian Revolution
• The Warlord Battles in Feudal Japan
• The rise of Cesar’s Empire in Ancient Rome
Of all these locations, I think the Tsar Empire and British Empire sound like the most plausible options. Sure, Ancient Egypt would be fun, as would the American revolution, but there isn’t much room for free running in those areas and times. At least, not in the scale we’ve seen in previous games. Then again, Ubisoft can always fudge the architecture a bit, right?
Which option do you think is the most interesting?

Rocksteady confirms that Batman’s next adventure hits in December, and features an all-too-familiar location.
What is Batman without the Batcave? Just some guy with tights in his closet, right? The Batcave is where all of the magic happens, from crafting razor-sharp batarangs to tuning up one of the bat-themed vehicles the hero has accumulated over the years. We’ve seen different versions of the Batcave in films and games throughout the years, but none are anything like what we’ll be seeing next month.
Rocksteady, developer of Batman: Arkham City (and Arkham Asylum), has just revealed that the next round of Arkham City DLC is due to land on December 20th – just in time for your Christmas break! In addition to the Joker’s Carnival and The Iceberg Lounge, players will have the opportunity to explore Rocksteady’s interpretation of the Batcave.
There’s no word on what players can expect to find in the Batcave, nor is there much information on pricing or anything else. All we know as of right now is that there will be a Batcave, and with Arkham City as our guide, it will be very pretty and very dark. And, possibly, very full of thugs that need a beating.
Rocksteady hasn’t announced where the DLC will be going, but it’s safe to assume we’ll see it on Xbox 360 and PS3 first, followed by a PC release a bit later.
What would you like to see in an Arkham City Batcave?

mfbatcave1Rocksteady confirms that Batman’s next adventure hits in December, and features an all-too-familiar location.

Leaked screenshots and cryptic Tweets indicate that Sony may be working on its own version of the Nintendo brawler.
Super Smash Bros. originally launched on the Nintendo 64, and was an instant classic. Nintendo fans immediately felt a connection to the familiar characters, and the simple but precise fighting mechanics turned the game into a massive success. The follow-up game, Super Smash Bros. Melee, launched for the GameCube and was probably the best iteration of the franchise, though the Wii’s Brawl is still looked upon in a positive light.
All things considered, the Super Smash Bros. game system is a brilliant moneymaker. Take familiar characters and make them fight. The end. So it’s no surprise that Nintendo’s competitors would want to get in on the action, and recent information indicates that Sony is doing just that.
Here’s what we know:
We know that a game, codenamed Title Fight, is in development at SuperBot Entertainment. We also vaguely know that the game involves several of Sony’s most famous characters, including Uncharted’s Nathan Drake, Twisted Metal’s Sweet Tooth and God of War’s Kratos. Also – Parappa the Rappa.
Various game websites have conducted investigations, turning up screenshots from the game, pictures of arcade joysticks and a tweet from SuperBot’s Chris Molina indicating that the new Sony commercials featuring a collection of familiar characters was “foreshadowing” his studio’s game.
There’s a full interview up at Paul Gale Network that basically lays the entire game out on a platter, so it’s unclear exactly how much of this is “rumor” and how much is “information.” For now, it definitely looks like Sony is cooking up a Super Smash Bros-type game.
Do you think it’s possible for another developer to capitalize on the success of the Smash Bros franchise?

If you’re planning to buy a Vita, don’t forget to figure the cost of a memory card into your expenses.
PlayStation Vita is being hailed as the future of handheld gaming, but for all of its technological innovations it still requires one thing many gamers consider almost archaic at this point: external memory cards. The device has a decent amount of internal memory, but if you’re planning to download games directly to the unit, you’ll need the help of an extra card – especially if you are the type of person that buys tons of DLC.
Thanks to GameStop, we now have a general idea of how much you can expect your PS Vita memory card to run. Roughly speaking, the smallest card (4GB) will cost you $30, with the largest (32GB) landing at $120. The low-end card isn’t too terribly priced, but you have to wonder how quickly hardcore gamers will fill up a 4GB card with downloaded titles and DLC content.
Here are a couple of lame things about the memory cards: they’re proprietary, meaning you can’t just buy a cheaper card somewhere and plug it into your unit. Also, it’s been confirmed that some PS Vita games will save exclusively to memory cards, meaning you’ll have to buy one at some point regardless of your download habits. Games like Uncharted, Dream Club Zero and Disgaea 3 will all require memory cards. And while they’re not priced so high that they seem ridiculous, comparing the $30 cost of a 4GB Vita card to any other memory card quickly shows the price difference. For example, a quick Google search yields plenty of 16-20GB cards in the $20-30 range.
What do you think about Vita’s memory card requirements, and the subsequent price points?

Well, not exactly. It’s free in terms of cash-money, but you’ll have to sell your soul to Origin.
If you like Burnout games but hate spending money, today is your day. A few savvy gamers at HotUKDeals have worked out how to score a copy of Burnout Paradise completely for free, with the only catch being that you have to use Origin to get it.
Here’s how the deal works: Log into your Origin account (or create a new one), run a quick search for Burnout and add Burnout Paradise to your cart. When you head to checkout, type the code “PARADISE” into the promo codes box and the game’s price will be dropped from £4.99 to £0.00. Unfortunately, this deal only seems to be active in the UK – no free games for us folks in the States.
Paradise earned rave reviews and is certainly a fan favorite, so picking the game up for free is an excellent deal. The game takes place in a fairly large virtual city, with stunt, race and other events strewn about at various intersections. Driving around to find the start of a failed challenge can be annoying, but the game has a great soundtrack and for the most part is fun to play.
Besides, if you’re getting it for free, what do you have to lose?

The PC version isn’t due until the 18th, but you can get an early start with the iOS version launching in just 24 hours.
Minecraft is ever so close to official release, with just two days remaining for those of us that are excited to get our hands on the final product. In celebration of the full game finally hitting stores and digital download services, Mojang is pushing the iOS version of the game live starting tomorrow. If you have an iOS device, this marks a fun opportunity to work on your mine or build up your fortress while you’re sitting on the train or waiting for a movie to start.
Android gamers have been enjoying Minecraft since October, but iPad and iPhone owners have unfortunately been left out in the cold until just now in terms of exciting new iOS games. Those of us that use iOS devices have had to stick with Scribblenauts and Fruit Ninja, which, admittedly, aren’t terrible selections. But, no more!
The mobile version of Minecraft, titled Minecraft: Pocket Edition is a simplified version of the full PC title. You’ll still load into randomly generated worlds, and you’ll still be able to build things out of a variety of blocks. What would really be nice is if you could access your normal Minecraft world on your tablet or phone, making some quick progress when you have a short break during the day. Sadly, that feature is nowhere to be found.
Minecraft hits the iTunes store tomorrow and will likely be priced around $5-10. Are you going to pick it up, or are you waiting for the PC release?
