Sometimes the best thing you can do for a game is pull the plug.
Battlefield is one of EA’s biggest brands, so it makes sense that the company would look to cash in on its popularity in any way possible. The most recent tie-in came in the form of an iOS game released for the iPad, known as Battlefield 3: Aftershock. There was only one problem: the game sucked.
Battlefield 3: Aftershock stayed live for only 15 days. Launched on February 7, the game was almost unplayable due to serious connection issues and an unresponsive control scheme. EA pulled the title from the iTunes store on February 22 so that it could tweak the title based on customer feedback.
So how did that tweaking manifest? EA is deleting the game, of course! In a statement issued earlier this week, EA confirmed that development on the game has been shut down completely, and that the servers will be pulled offline March 31.
Battlefield 3: Aftershock was free-to-play, so it’s not like anyone is really getting hurt by the game being taken offline. Anyone, of course, besides EA, who likely sank a large sum of money into the title before realizing it was a lost cause.
Did you play Battlefield 3: Aftershock? What did you think?

It’s been almost four months since a Call of Duty game came out. Time to start talking about a new one!
Most people agree that the next entry in the Call of Duty franchise will be Black Ops 2. It’s Treyarch’s turn to develop a CoD title, and the original Black Ops broke pretty much every record set by Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare 2. And since Activision isn’t one for originality or risk-taking, a straight sequel is all but guaranteed.
Of course, Activision still likes to pretend like it can keep a secret. So even though Black Ops 2 was outed by a retailer last month and everyone pretty much knows it’s coming, the company has gone out of its way to pretend that isn’t the case. Well, add another retailer leak to the pile.
Spanish retailer Fnac not only has Black Ops 2 in its currently video game roster, but has a release window for the still-unannounced title as well: November 2012. Once again, this is less than news—a new Call of Duty game has come out in October or November of every year since 2003.
Seriously, Activision, just announce the game (and the accompanying Black Ops ELITE paid service) already.

Despite an ongoing rivalry, EA has nothing but positive remarks for the “games as services” philosophy Activision has adapted.
Call of Duty Elite is a premium subscription service that launched with Modern Warfare 3. The service comes with a few perks, such as future DLC packs and advanced clan support. And while many gamers lamented CoD Elite as yet another cash grab, Electronic Arts sees it as an opportunity in the making.
In an earnings call with investors this morning, EA CEO John Riccitiello fired off a quick compliment to Activision, EA’s primary competition in the FPS market. He noted that adding a subscription to an FPS game (MW3) was a “best-in-class performance,” and that EA would be looking for similar ways to further monetize its franchises. Battlefield Elite, anyone?
The “games as services” movement is picking up steam, with companies like Activision leading the charge. Publishers are on the hunt for any method of expanding revenue, and the massive success of CoD Elite has gone a long way towards proving that the subscription model works.
What do you think? Would you pay for a CoD Elite-type service on Battlefield or Mass Effect 3?

Call of Duty locking DLC to ELite accounts
More Elite features include flipping the bird to consumers and making tonnes off money by being crazy
So Modern Warfare 3 made over a billion dollars last year and whilst Activision is tight lipped on how much has been made from their Elite service so far. The first two maps for MW3 have been released and the next few already teased but many CoD players have discovered a recent change in the DLC policy. This would have people shelling out more money for their maps but other profiles on the system will be unable to get their content without a second or separate Elite membership.
On the Call of Duty forums, there were 8 pages worth on a single thread of upset players who had their friends and family accounts discontinued or altered with no new maps because they didn't have a secondary account. What's even worse is that the new policy doesn't really work with the terms of services you encounter when you first download the content, which rather plainly states on the loading screen that: "You can use this item on the first Xbox 360 console you downloaded it to. Access to this item will also be granted to all users on this first console."
What would usually happen is that DLC on the 360 would be user agnostic and while your purchase (or any redownloads of purchased items) would be tied to your account, any XBLA games or in-game DLC would be on your HD and playable by any account on the 360, which you own. Microsoft's own digital ownership scheme, mimics real life ownership, so as long as someone has access to the content, you can let someone borrow it from you and play it on their own account.
However, with the CoD Elite service, you cannot do so and require your own user account to access the maps and DLC. For example, a single copy of the game could set you back several $50 a year per account to play on.
Whilst Activision is yet to make a comment on it, I'm sure the more "financially savvy" (See: Greedy) companies will probably adopt this system to make sure each user or member of a console will fork out a piece of dough to make sure they make up for the "lost millions" from pirates.
Not sure how many Call of Duty fans there are on this site, but I'm sure that more often than not there are criticism's spread far and wide about their handling of their Elite service as well as their user base. I do like Call of Duty in theory and in some aspects.
I think if the Black Ops zombie game was just a downloadable title I would buy that and every bit of DLC in existance, but alas we are burdened by terrible storylines, unrelatable characters and some insane visuals. They're not terrible games but their effect on the industry (see: BF3, Medal of Honor, etc.) can bar none see them as a culprit.

Did you guys know that people like Call of Duty games? Because Activision is reporting huge profits for the latest entry in the series.
Okay, I promise this is the last news post about how much money Modern Warfare is making. Honestly, I wasn’t even going to post it, but it’s just such a big deal there’s really no way to avoid it.
Activision has reported that Modern Warfare 3 has raked in an astonishing $1 billion in its first 16 days of launch. That’s faster than Avatar, which took 17 days to break a billion after it was released in 2010. The published has also reported that there are over 30 million people playing one version of Call of Duty or the other, making it one of the biggest gaming communities in the world.
As the publisher notes, the CoD community is now larger than the populations of New York, Paris, Madrid, Tokyo and London. Beat that, Battlefield! They also boasted that CoD Elite, the barely-functioning online service launched with MW3, has landed six million players. They compared this figure to sign-ups for Hulu, Xbox Live and Netflix, but I’m not sure that’s a fair comparison considering most of those companies were doing something completely new rather than piggybacking a service onto a successful product.
Like I’ve said before, I’m a Battlefield guy. But, any big success should be celebrated, so hats off to the folks at Infinity Ward for making such a popular game. And also to Activision, for an unmatched marketing blitz.
Are you one of the 30 million Call of Duty players?

Take 2 Boss Criticizes Yearly Schedule Releases
With games like Assassin's Creed and Call of Duty being released every year, who has time for quality.
Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick is a force to be reckoned with. A man who has helped push some of the most innovative and creatively awesome titles to the finish line over the years, but over those years has been time...effort...killing hookers, so when Zelnick says that the current model of yearly releases isn't sustainable, he knows what he's talking about.
Big budget Triple-A titles need time and effort put upon them, not just a new coat of paint, a first-draft script and some geographically confused accents. Zelnick was a speaker at the UBS Media and Communications conference and whilst Zelnick didn't specificially name any franchises he had however, just finished discussing Activision's stance in the market place.
Zelnick said that if "you start trying to stamp these products out annually, we don't think that's consistent with a high-quality result", essentially the current Call of Duty model, even with a subscription service, is not sustainable. Zelnick added that if you give consmers something every year like clockwork, they will eventually grow tired of it.
Whilst I would agree with Zelnick, MW3 did pull in over half a billion dollars in sales last month and I tend not to argue with creative figures that I will never ever ever ever ever ever see in my lifetime.
Figures have been coming out about how GameStop and a few other retailers have sold over half a million Premium Subscriptions to Call of Duty's subscription service, Elite and have continued to grow as such. Zelnick queried the viability of such a subscription service, saying he could't tell whether it was relevant yet. "I'm kind of skeptical, frankly. I suspect that we want a different experience on our big screen than we do on our middle-sized screen than we do on our mobile screen, because I think we use them at different times and they mean different things. I do think an intellectual property can thread through, but only if it is really high quality."
That being said users who signed up for Elite crashed the servers twice in the first week of release due to it's popularity and the unbelivable amount of support that Activision had not prepared for. Jamie Berger of Activision has acttually said that "right now, it's an option", when talking about Elite, but he also adds that it might not be in "3-5 years."
So both Activision and Zelnick are not thinking about keeping a community running in the long term; they should team up on something.

If you want to be take advantage of CoD Elite Founder bonuses, today’s your last day to register.
Call of Duty Elite has seen its share of ups and downs. While the PC version is still on some vague horizon and the console versions have experienced crashes and other access problems due to huge surges in demand, the service has proven successful beyond Activision’s wildest dreams. Millions of players have signed up to take advantage of the features the service provides.
Every player that signs up for CoD Elite before the end of November is given what Activision calls “Founder” status. Founder status comes with a few specific perks, including an in-game title, in-game emblem, weapon camo, clan XP and special contests and prizes.
If you’re really into Modern Warfare 3, or Call of Duty in general, CoD Elite is an excellent service for you. Even if you don’t earn Founder status, you’ll still have access to all of the basic features offered by COD Elite. But you can still get in on Founder bonuses if you register before the calendar rolls over to December 1st.
Of course, there’s one other method for getting into the Founders club after the deadline: spending more money. If you pick up the Modern Warfare 3: Hardened Edition, you’ll be grandfathered into the Founder’s club regardless of when you register.
There’s no info available on how this impacts PC owners, since Elite isn’t live for them quite yet. I’m trying to get someone at Activision to give me a statement or update – we’ll see.
Are you enjoying Elite so far? How does it compare to Battlelog?

Despite tweeting to the contrary yesterday, Activision insists that Call of Duty Elite will be made available for PCs.
Yesterday we broke news that the through official Call of Duty Elite Twitter account, Activision was expressing doubts on whether or not the service would actually make it to PC systems. Elite has already been delayed, but a tweet from the developer stated that there was no guarantee on “if or when” the service would ever go live, prompting gamers to worry that the PC version of Elite was in danger of being scrapped.
Activision disagrees with the tweet, or perhaps with the phrasing, and has issued a statement today confirming that the free version of Elite will indeed be making its way to PC, but not as soon as some fans may hope.
The company’s Twitter account posted a message stating that the developer “misspoke” and that they have always maintained the goal of bringing the service to PC systems. They did specify “free,” so it looks like the fancier, pay-to-play version of Elite is strictly console only.
Elite has had a few problems since launch and the team has expressed concern over stats rigging on PC systems, so don’t expect to see it any time soon.

The service, described by Activision as a “necessity” for future games, might be dead in the water for PC gamers.
Once upon a time, there was a company called Activision. This company, led by the shrewd but effective Bobby Kotick, practically reinvented the way games are developed, turning franchise studios into the equivalent of a car assembly line. Of course, Activision is always looking for ways to innovate (or, according to some gamers, squeeze a few more bucks out of customers), and their most recent idea came in the form of Call of Duty Elite.
Elite was intended to be a way to track your stats, interact with other players, and generally broaden your Call of Duty experience. Think of it like a new version of Bungie’s old stats tracker for Halo, or a slightly different version of Battlefield 3’s Battlelog. Elite came in two forms – free and premium, with premium subscribers also landing all future DLC and a couple of other perks.
But there was one problem with CoD Elite; mainly that Beachhead (the company behind the service) couldn’t get it to work for PC systems. When Modern Warfare 3 launched last week, we were told that Elite would be delayed for PC gamers due to concerns over stats rigging. Now, it looks like CoD fans may not see the service at all.
The official Call of Duty Elite Twitter page today posted a cryptic note indicating that while they’re working hard on Elite for PCs, they can’t guarantee “if or when” it will actually come around. That’s a pretty big “if,” considering how hard Activision pushed Elite as the future of gaming. This is just more bad news for the service, which has been plagued with issues since launching on consoles.
On the plus side, if you purchased Elite, at least you still get your DLC. Elite was a big chunk of the MW3 marketing blitz, so it’s unlikely they’ll completely scrap it. But PC owners may end up with a more limited version.
What do you think of Call of Duty Elite?

The biggest launch of the year is officially in full swing. Did you already pick up your copy?
Modern Warfare 3 is officially on shelves, with thousands of gamers lining up the night to pick up their copies before anyone else. I know for a fact that my neighbor picked up a midnight copy – the explosions started right around 12:45. Launch events across the country were packed with gamers eagerly awaiting their first chance to play the game through in-store tournaments and other special events.
The launch seems to have gone fairly smoothly, with Call of Duty Elite experiencing only minor issues due to the large rush of people joining up. Elite is only available on Xbox 360 at the moment, with the PS3 version being pushed live on a PlayStation Store update later on and the PC version still delayed indefinitely due to concerns over stat rigging. We’ll have to see how the service holds up once everyone is able to access it before passing judgment.
Review scores are starting to trickle in, with the game (at least the 360 version) holding down a high 90 score on Metacritic. Most reviewers seem to note that the game isn’t reinventing the wheel, but delivers so strongly on the promises of the franchise that it’s still quite a success for the fractured Infinity Ward team. Of course, there are very few reviews posted so that’s another thing we’ll have to wait on.
Are you playing MW3 today? Is it truly the “most anticipated game of all time?” Sound off in the comments if you can pull yourself away from the TV.

Activision’s premium CoD service is prepped and ready for download, assuming you need something to stare at until midnight.
We’re still roughly 10 hours from the official launch of Modern Warfare 3, not counting leaked copies or insane truck heists. For most of the gaming populace, midnight tonight marks the first opportunity to pick up what is probably going to be the biggest game of the year (in terms of sales, anyway). Activision knows you’re in a frenzy though, so they’ve pushed the Call of Duty Elite service live Xbox 360 – you can download it right now! If you’re a PC player, you’ll have to wait, since Elite is apparently broken on that platform.
If you’re unfamiliar with Call of Duty Elite, here’s how it works: You pay Activision $60 for your copy of Modern Warfare 3. Then (or now), you pay them another $49.99 for the privilege of using the premium Elite service. While Elite is available for free, only paid members receive all DLC packs, clan leveling and video uploads. It’s probably a good deal if you’re planning to buy DLC; they’ll be priced around $15 each and there will be at least three.
Beyond the DLC price, the premium version doesn’t seem to offer much more than the free one – managing your stats is probably the most valuable asset and you can do that with the regular version.
You’ll find a full comparison of the two Elite programs here: Call of Duty Elite
So what do you think of Call of Duty Elite? Cash grab or valuable service? I love Battelog (for BF3), but would not have paid to use it. Nor for Halo: Reach stats or any other “extra.” Still, some people will probably love it, and the DLC is a nice perk.

The Call of Duty franchise continues one of the best game ad campaigns of all time with the most recent version of “There’s a Soldier in All of Us.”
The commercial for last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops, was an excellent addition to the world of games advertising. Instead of marketing the game’s set pieces, graphics or play style, it focused instead on the core experience of the title – regular people getting to play dress-up and be elite soldiers for a day. I think most people would agree that it was a home run.
Activision is continuing in the same vein with this commercial for Modern Warfare 3, which stars Jonah Hill and Sam Worthington:
The commercial appears to be a shorter version of a long ad, so we’ll just have to wait for the whole thing to come out before we can get an idea of exactly what’s going on. I don’t find this one as appealing as the Black Ops commercial, simply because Black Ops had much more “normal person” representation.
What do you think of the latest MW3 commercial?

Although the reception of the gaming public on Call of Duty: Elite may be lukewarm, Wedbush Securities is predicting that the new Activision service will be raking in the big bucks come next year.
According to the analyst firm, "We expect that at least 1 million will sign up for the premium Elite membership by year end. The Call of Duty network effect may be amplified by premium Elite, such that if a gamer's friend purchases premium Elite and gets access to premium maps, the gamer may feel compelled to purchase Elite in order to compete as early and as often as possible."
Their fearless forecast: Call of Duty: Elite will be raking in a whopping US$ 50M by 2012, and luring in as much as three million subscribers by 2013. On top of this, the analysts firm does not think that Activision will be increasing the price for the service, at least not for its first two years, or until it's gained some footing.
Activision confirmed just recently that Facebook will be integrated with the Elite service. The PS3 beta is also set for this summer, although none has been confirmed for the PC.

Call of Duty: Elite is pulling all stops to lure in fans to their new online service. To make sure they stay ahead of their competition, Activision has now released some more details about Elite, which should entice fans still wishy-washy about it.
For one, they have now confirmed their partnership with Mark Zuckerberg's moneytrain, Facebook. The integration entails that players will have the ability to connect their Elite subscription straight to their personal Facebook accounts, if they would ever want to be in the know if they have friends playing Call of Duty. And because Facebook is all about keeping people connected, this means that those who connect to Facebook via their Elite accounts will then be able to play with contacts via Facebook, even though they are not connected via Xbox Live.
Now, what we do know so far about the Elite subscription is that there will be two types: the basic and the premium package. The premium package, in particular, will bundle in premium video content, as well as free and early access to all downloadable content coming Modern Warfare 3's way. Clan Leveling and Refereed Tournaments are also included.
Anyway, Elite is currently having its beta, at least for the console versions, getting ready for the big November 8th launch of CoD: Modern Warfare 3.
