Modern Warfare 3 Earns $775 Million in Five Days

The first-person shooter juggernaut simply can’t be stopped, earning almost a billion dollars in its first few days of launch.

We knew that Modern Warfare was big. Activision confirmed last week that the Call of Duty franchise has now made more money than Star Wars or Lord of the Rings, and the first-day totals for MW3 were nothing but staggering. And the game just keeps on going.

In a press release issued by Activision early this morning, the company confirmed that the game has made a ridiculous $775 million since launching on November 8th. The game is simply rocketing into the stratosphere.

The game absolutely demolished the week one record for 2010’s Black Ops, which still amassed an impressive $550 million. Call of Duty is enormous, taking up the number one, number two, and number four slots on the Xbox Live play charts (Battlefield 3 is number three).

The game set two new records on Xbox Live, in fact:

• 7 million hours of playtime logged by players over the weekend.

• 2.2 unique accounts logged in to play

• 3.3 players on at the same time

Congratulations to Activision on their success. I’m a Battlefield guy, but when you make a game people love there’s nothing more to do than say “Nice work” and move along.

Modern Warfare 3 Launch Trailer Now Live

Activision and the remnants of Infinity Ward drop the latest trailer for what they’re calling the “most anticipated game of all time.” But is it enough to top Battlefield 3?

The next three weeks are shaping up to be an incredible battle of the titans. With Battlefield 3 launching October 24th and Modern Warfare 3 launching on November 8th, the attention of the industry is focued entirely on these two behemoth franchises. EA dropped their final launch trailer for Battlefield 3 earlier in the week; not to be outdone, Activision has done the same, perhaps hoping to block some of BF3’s enthusiasm.

After watching both trailers, I do have to say that Battlefield has the clear edge in terms of polish and graphics. The game looks much better than MW3, and the trailer for MW3 didn’t really get me excited for the game. Frankly, it looks exactly like the last Modern Warfare, which is the primary complaint most gamers have levied at the franchise. I’ve yet to see a screen capture in which the game looks any different.

That being said, the Call of Duty brand has an insane amount of customer loyalty and Activision would really have to screw something up to send players from one camp to the other. As a gamer who plays both titles off and on, I would say that if MW3 is the same as MW2, I’m probably going to skip it.

Modern Warfare 3 is still pretty far ahead in terms of pre-order sales, with about 1.7 million to Battlefield’s 1.07 million. I vaguely remember the head of EA saying that he believed Battlefield would be the winner in terms of lifetime sales, and if Activision continues on the path of releasing the same game every year I wouldn’t be surprised if he were right.

So now that you’ve seen both launch trailers, which game looks like the better buy to you?

Modern Warfare 3 Wii isn't confirmed -- yet

If you are of the belief that Modern Warfare 3 will be coming to the Nintendo Wii, then you are terribly misinformed. Infinity Ward has debunked rumors stating the same on their official Twitter page.

Robert Bowling stressed that, "The confirmed platforms available for current pre-order is Xbox 360, PS3 and PC." If you want to go ahead and read between the lines hoping for some sign of possibility that it is coming to the Wii, then you may do so. After all, he used the word "currently" loosely, which could indicate that a confirmation may be made later.

The rumors stirred to life upon a listing of the platforms for Modern Warfare 3 up on the game's official site, clearly indicating that it's going to make an appearance on both the Wii and DS platforms. The image has been taken down already and replaced with a "corrected one", but not before the image has been caught on screencap.

'Unprecedented online universe' assured for Modern Warfare 3

If there's one other thing you should get your hopes up high for in Modern Warfare 3, it should be the "unprecedented online universe".

More details were released, thanks to Activision's juicy investors call from earlier today, and here, Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg took the time to talk about the next installation of the Modern Warfare series.

"By any measure, Call of Duty is one of the biggest entertainment franchises in the world and we expect this year's game will set a new standard in the franchise.

The creative excellence and sheer scale of the game we are making, and the unprecedented online universe that will accompany it will re-set the bar for this genre, giving players a new level of immersion, connectivity, community and of course epic action. The game to date has exceeded every internal milestone and we look forward to sharing it with you soon."
