Ó

THQ hasn’t been doing great over the last few months, and this nasty letter from a former employee doesn’t make things look any better.
THQ, the company behind Saints Row: The Third, had a tough 2011. The company was in such dire straits that rumors floated around about it canceling its entire 2014 lineup, rumors the company vehemently denied. This morning we received word that THQ was shifting its strategies yet again, this time focusing more on its core franchises over third party licensing.
It’s hard to get a bead on exactly what’s happening with THQ. Rumors and sales indicate the company is in serious trouble despite the success of Saints Row, but the company refuses to admit that they have any sort of problem. Only one person seems to be willing to comment on the state of the company – an alleged former employee with an obvious bone to pick.
In a letter written to THQ’s Board of Directors, CEO Brian Farrell as well as the general public and a collection of gaming news sites, this “Formerly Mismanaged” employee rattles off a laundry lists of complaints about the company.
The letter essentially claims that THQ’s problems stem from mismanagement and a Board of Directors that has no clue how to strategically run a gaming company. It gives examples like acquiring game studios with no plan on how to utilize their talents (then later shutting them down), investing money into shrinking niche markets, the company’s refusal to dump a CEO that has tanked its stock price and high-paid executives making enormous mistakes that call their competency into question. The disastrous uDraw tablet also makes an appearance.
These allegations of management incompetency surface just a few days before THQ announces its current financial standing on February 2, and things certainly don’t look good. One analyst has gone on the record by stating that THQ, without some sort of financial windfall, with run out of cash near the middle of this year.
You can read the letter in its (extremely long) entirety below:
[JoyStiq]
"To:
THQ Board of Directors
Lawrence Burstein
James Whims, Gigex, Inc.
Henry DeNero, Arcturus Capital
Brian Dougherty, AirSet, Inc.
Jeffrey Griffiths , Lumber Liquidators
From:
Current and Ex-Employees, Shareholders, and The Public
Dear THQ Board,
I am an ex-employee at THQ. I saw the tweet-started headlines over the past week from an "industry expert." This expert is one who I and my friends and co-workers in the industry have never heard of after a long time in the field. I had been reading the various following articles and accounts and it generated sympathy for friends both recently laid off and currently still there. I thought it would be a good idea to send a note with their input. This note has honest facts and thoughts about THQ and the current problems there. Most of these facts are public knowledge and they have been confirmed by public records or can be confirmed by current and former THQ staff there both before and after my and their time.
I have long felt the need to explain to outsiders how this beaten-down company has wound up in this position. It is to the point where having it on your resume is not a point in your favor. And that shouldn't be the case. I'm/We're sending this note anonymously because some of us are still awaiting final checks and others know how little corporations like employees who air their dirty laundry. We feel the need to say something to combat the partial misinformation being written.
THQ had been known through the years for having a formula. They find a hot license, make a cheap game, barely advertise it, and make money. This formula worked during the Playstation and Xbox and Gameboy days and made the company a lot of cash. Unfortunately, THQ's old guard executives seem to be stuck trying to manage the company the same way they did back then and haven't realized the industry has changed.
The beginning of the end came years ago as Brian Farrell lead an executive team to acquire a large number of studios. A large amount of cash was used in the acquisition or setup of game developers with different degrees of talent. The problem was they were bought without strategic reasoning or specific plan on to use them. So after awhile another large amount of money was spent as those studios failed and were sold off and shut down. The executive team at the time were an entirely different group of people with one key exception in the CEO. The CEO/the then executive team wasted the cash that the company had built up with these massive investments and selloffs.
The studio purchase errors were not helped by the mistakes in the licensing deals that were signed by the same CEO. Millions and millions of dollars were wasted on acquiring licenses at the same time the kids, family, casual business was declining at a rapid rate. Instead of slowing those acquisitions he overpaid for more of them until again cash was wasted in paying for brands that didn't sell well anymore.
The mistakes in decisions and cash losses triggered wave after wave of layoffs. In the most recent wave, about 40 people lost their jobs this past December through no fault of their own. The reason why is the chronic and constant mismanagement of their company. The fact is that the CEO and executive committee were so focused on trying to hit an unrealistic financial goal that they bet everything on an extremely risky proposition in the uDraw tablet. When they lost, they further displayed their lack of management skills by not having a contingency plan. Three weeks after the game launched, an entire business unit was wiped out when it didn't meet its goal due to relying on that one product to hit an unrealistic target.
After the layoffs many ex-employees walked around shell-shocked and trying to figure out who was responsible. They came to the understanding that most of us do after leaving the company. The issue with THQ has never been one of lack of staff creativity, intellect or business intelligence. It all rests of the failure of its management team and you the Board of Directors.
This Board has allowed the Brian Farrell, the CEO, the ongoing ability to take a cash-rich profitable company and drive it from a $30 share price down to around $.70 without acting despite numerous mistakes that even for those lacking business training, could see were errors. Even without glaring mistakes how can the same CEO stay in charge after a 99% share price loss? Aside from the board, who is responsible for the current situation and who is accountable for the current and future job losses at the company? When you ask the recently departed who are a good source of information, you get the same answers. This uDraw failure is the largest and most recent one in a string of them that were hushed over and hidden. The answer aside from the Board is the current executive team that allowed this uDraw implosion to happen.
Brian Farrell, CEO with a 2011 salary of $1,289,558, for a lack of business intelligence or fiscal accountability. A vocal inside group pointed out the mistake of trying to launch a year-old product that received almost no software support in the last 12 months. Instead of listening and having a back-up plan, he went ahead and invested a ridiculous amount of money in the manufacturing and advertising of the product and failed miserably. It is passed time for him to go. We are wondering what is taking so long for you to act. We have been wondering this same question for a long time.
Martin Good, EVP and head of Kids, Family, Casual with a 2011 salary of $1,198,023, for bringing no strategic thought or business sense to the role. He was brought out from Australia sales to replace an outgoing head of the business unit and rapidly displayed a complete lack of leadership skills, vision, and any sort of analytical sense. Looking at his compensation package, he is an excellent negotiator as his salary is higher than anyone's except for the CEO. On the plus side he lost his job with the rest of those laid off. On the minus side, he will be floating down on a golden parachute while the rest of the former employees scramble to look for jobs in this challenging environment. Most of those jobs will be at studios in other parts of the country, so they will be forced to relocate their families in the middle of their childrens school years. It is incredible that he made this level of income while doing such a poor job, but it serves as a reflection of the lack of Brian Farrell's ability to staff well and manage.
Paul Pucino, CFO with a 2011 salary of $674,855, for not planning for this possibility and having a safety net or a plan to cover THQ just in case of failure. We have a line of credit that we likely used to buy the plastic that is not selling to customers. It is like taking a cash advance to buy THQ stock and just as worthless of an investment. Paul is known as an absentee executive who is missing when business situations gets complicated. While he was in the loop at the point of the risk, with the following failure he has been clearly unavailable. It is another example of Brian Farrell's inability to staff.
Ian Curran, EVP and head of global publishing with a 2011 salary of $1,037,047, for not flagging an unrealistic sales goal to the CEO or the Board when a big part of the corporation felt the numbers were unrealistic. He blindly held up an unachievable target and didn't act when multiple people told him he was aiming to high and out of step with the marketplace. If a sales executive's job is to anticipate the market, he has done a poor job of it. Another example of Brian Farrell not being able to find the right people for the right job.
Ed Kauffman, EVP of Legal and Business Affairs who clearly was signing bad deals on licensed products, not factoring in the changes in the business and being more critical with financial terms with partners. uDraw by itself cannot possibly explain the companies poor financial health. It is a combination of that product and a string of bad licensed deals that the company took on against better judgement. While Brain Farrell would logically be the final decisionmaker for deals, Kauffman is either unpersuasive in his arguments to not do them or supported them. Either situation equates to another example of poor staffing choices by the CEO.
uDraw was failure and the only people to blame are the people listed above. THQ and its current financial situation is also their responsibility. And they were paid around $4.5 million dollars for their poor decisions. If there is any doubt we would recommend talking to current and former staff to get the straight story. Don't read this note as bitterness on their part, but more as long overdue truth.
So, Board, it is time. Passed time for you to act and passed time for you to do something about the mismanagement that has gone on for too many years. We've watched the stock from the outside and read the comments and the reason why the company is valued so low despite its sales is because of this underqualified management team.
Board it is time for you to act before your names are added to the list above of things that must change.
Sincerely,
The Formerly Mismanaged"

Retro Studios Dev could make Zelda in the future
So Zelda could have a father figure that would basically control his life too?
Retro Studios, responsible for the fantastic, Metroid Prime series has burst through the next generation of consoles with their help and it looks like Nintendo could be looking for their help in the future when this generation leaves behind the man in the little green hat. According to an interview with Wired magazine, Shigeru Miyamoto discussed the possibility of a Western imagined version of the LoZ series which Retro  would be apart of and the most likely candidate for the job
"As you know, we have already collaborated with Retro for the Metroid Prime series in the past," Miyamoto said. "And I think when we talk about any other franchise, Zelda might be a possible franchise for that collaboration." Which would be fantastic as long as someone else was writing the script.
There was a controversy last year with the development of the most recent Metroid Prime game where Samus, who was only a mildly formed character, was turned into a mix between a Space Pirate and Lara Croft with Daddy issues. People were up in arms about her character change, but I think the outcry from fans was enough for Retro Studios to give them the bird or to never do it again.
Personally, I think a Zelda imagining from them would be incredibly interesting if they stuck to what Nintendo had done in the past, just tweaked it with some new game mechanics, which is what Retro Studios is quite good at, other than making fanboys - who don't know what a reboot or characterisation is, cry.

Tomorrow’s 2GB Battlefield patch brings bug fixes, balance changes, and a few other goodies.
We knew that a Battlefield 3 patch was on the way, and we knew that it resolved a few glaring issues (like the tactical light – get it!? Glaring?!), but the full extent of the patch wasn’t really clear until the full patch notes went public. After a quick glance through, it’s obvious DICE is serious about keeping their game as balanced and fun as possible.
The bulk of the 2GB patch is content for the upcoming Back to Karkand DLC pack, but the rest is all adjustments to existing game mechanics. Among the fixes? A big nerf to mortars, a buff to jet cannons, spawn point adjustment and a ton of tiny tweaks to weapons. Here’s the full list of changes, courtesy of Battlelog:
Bugfixes
• Fixed a problem with spawn timer now showing blue border on startup and lost spawn point
• Fixed a problem where player who joined queuing on End of round got spawn screen stuck on screen, but unable to do anything with it until next round loaded
• Fixed a problem where camera would change to 3rd person on killcam when killcam was turned off in server settings
• Fixed stat references on several dogtags
• Fixed for surveillance ribbon not counting TUGS
• Fixed a missing combat area lines on the minimap for Grand Bazaar conquest small
• Moved a tank spawn in US base on Caspian Border so it would not be destroyed by a falling tree

• Fixed several vehicles that did not properly shoot rockets and guns towards their predictive sights
• Fixed the G17 Supressed Laser not working properly

• Increased the Spawn protection radius on TDM
• Fixed a problem with smoke on land vehicles, Missiles should now miss more often
• Fixed a problem where users could end up with IRNV scope in any vehicle
• Fixed a problem where player dies if vaulting over a ledge and into water while sprinting
• Fixed several crashes and increased general stability
• Fixed a problem where the user was unable to revive two players that have the bodies one over the other
• Fixed so you can assign an axis and use as a digital input. This makes it possible for the player (on pc) to assign one of the sticks on a gameped to be used for throttle/brake.
• Fixed a problem with the Kill camera acting up when suiciding from parachute
• Fixed air radar was showing to much. now lasertagged, heatsignature above threshold, enemy missiles and capture points are only visible on air radar
• Fixed a problem where the game would enter a technical hang if the user pressed pause menu and tilde at the same time
• Fixed a problem where you could get green flashes on screen
• You can now reassign cycle weapons
• Fixed so the weapon zooms automatically after bipod deploy is gone when using zoom toggle
• Fixed a problem where the parachute would stay stuck in air if the owner was killed
Balance Tweaks
• Fixed several weapons so they are properly suppressed and hide the player on the minimap when fired.
• Tweaked Tactical Light so it is not as blinding over longer ranges.
• Tweaked the IRNV scope so it is limited to usage only at close range.
• Reduced heat masking effectiveness of Spec Ops Camo.
• Fixed a bug where Ammo spec would give additional 40mm grenades instead of Frag spec.

• Decreased the power of Miniguns against Jets and Helicopters.
• Increased the power of Stingers against Jets.
• Flares reload times for Jets and Helicopter Gunners have been increased.
• Tweaked the AN94 so its burst fire better conveys the real world advantage offered by this weapon.
• Added Single Shot to the AN94 as an available fire mode.
• Slightly increased the recoil on the M416 and removed the Burst Fire mode (this weapon incorrectly had burst fire, which was not authentic).
• Tweaked the spawns for TDM on Kharg Island, Grand Bazaar, Caspian Border, Seine Crossing, Operation Firestorm, Damavand Peak and Noshahar Canals
• Moved a tank spawn in US base on Caspian Border so it would not be destroyed by a falling tree
• Tweaked the Gas station Capture area on Conquest on Caspian Border
• Tweaked the max vehicle height on Noshahar Canals
So there’s that. See anything you like?

Ó

A couple of days back, the announcement that Twisted Metal was going to be delayed burst out, along with David Jaffe's generic explanation of the game needing more polished.
Today, however, he took to this Twitter account to provide further specific information as to what elements of the game need more tweaking.
Said Jaffe: "No real way to ship Twisted Metal sooner than the date we are currently shooting for (early 2012)... Sorry for the delay. But the extra months are really needed for polish and we feel we need more than 4-6 weeks (which would see us hitting shelves in your suggested November time frame) of polishing/ tuning.
Also hitting smack dab in mid Nov/Mid Dec is a bad time to release this game (although that was not the reaseon we delayed AT ALL... we WANTED to be out in Oct)... but the extra time gives us more time to balance weapons, tune vehicle handling, tune the EXP progression for levelling up, etc... I assure you, better to be a LITTLE ANNOYED in the short term versus hate us forever for shipping a game that's not up to your understandably high expectations. ANY money is a lot to ask from someone for entertainment. 60 bucks is a S**TE TON to ask for so we are going to charge that, you deserve our best... even if it takes a little longer than we anticipated.
Some examples of stuff we're not happy with yet- which should allow you and others to really peek behind the scenes at the kind of stuff this kind of extra time will allow:
Iron Maiden has a few boss attacks that don't have strong enough telegraphs (aka- the player isn't able to clearly, consistently tell when she is going to launch the attack)
Iron Maiden has an attack that- even if you can see it coming- the player is not really sure how to avoid it besides using a shield (and we want the player to always have another defensive ability beyond a shield)
We are not 100% happy with the XP rank up tuning….we don't want you to be able to hit the level cap too soon but we also don't want the level cap to be so hard to reach that only super amazing hard core can reach it
There are 1-2 online trophies that will motivate players to take actions that go against the more team oriented aspects of some of the modes and thus will piss off other players so we need to rethink and replace those
Pick up placements for split screen local gaming needs more attention
Pick up regen timing needs some tuning…
So imagine about 250 of those sorts of things. Could we ship without change a single one? Totally and it would still be a really fun game. But it would not be good enough for us. And certainly not for you.
It's probably a good idea they didn't set up a public beta date yet. That would have only added to their worries more.

You can now stop speculating. Ignition has now confirmed that El Shaddai is now ditching its set July 26th launch for North America.
According to the publisher, the delay is brought about by "unforeseen logistical issues". Europe, however, retains its release date of September 9th.
Reassured El Shaddai's official Twitter, "Don't worry, everything is fine!" If there's a delay due to logistical issues, then obviously not everything is fine. But if they so insist, well then, alright. We're just going to have to wait for their updates on it.
El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron's delay burst out into the scene when online retailers Amazon and GameStop changed the release date of the game on their product pages to August 16th. It's not that too far, anyway.

That was quick. Nintendo Japan has just confirmed earlier tonight that they are indeed coming out with a new console by 2012.
Add to that, they also confirmed that it will be coming over to this year's E3, up and running and definitely playable for people to see, apart from making the official unveiling.
So far, it's being dubbed as Project Cafe, and is being touted as a console that will be "significantly more powerful" than the current Xbox 360 and PS3 models.
Nintendo's been pretty secretive about it, understandably, but other tidbits that have been circulating the speculations block is that there will be a 6-inch touch screen display, dual analog sticks, and direct-from-console-stream capabilities among others.
If their claims prove to be true, then this just might put Nintendo right back in the consoles race.

It's been a while since we last heard from Jack Thompson. Not that we miss him or anything, but just in case you're interested, he's so back and swinging that crazy bat yet again.
This time, though, he takes aim at one person specifically, and that would be Valve's big boss Gabe Newell. He not only takes aim, however, he threatens him. And for what? That school shooting mod for Half-Life 2, Schoo Shooter: North American Tour 2012.
In a public letter addressed to Mr. Newell, he says thus:
Dear Mr. Newell:
You either know or should know that the more moral midgets who run Checkerboarded Studios have created a mod for your company's Half-Life which they call School Shooter: North American TOur 2010. This mod is a full-blown Columbine massacre simulator which cannot function without your company's assistance and acquiesence.
Attached herewith is a letter from FHE-ASAP that expresses their, my, and others' concerns about this Columbine massacre mod. As you either know or should know, your Half-Life murder simulator was obsessively played, and thus became a training ad, for a) teenaged Robert Steinhauser, who authored at Erfurt, Germany, the worst school shooting massacre in European history, and b) Seung-Hi Cho, who authored at Virginia Tech University the worst school shooting massacre in world history. As to the latter, the sources of this information are teh Washington Post and the New York Times. Now some sociopaths have made reprises of Erfurt and Virginia Tech far more likely."
Here comes the "threat" part of his letter to Gabe:
"Given the fact that your company has the technological ability to stop the operation of School Shooter, you must undertake steps immediately to do so.
Speaking for myself alone (for now), you have until five o'clock pm Eastern standard time this Friday, March 18, 2011, to shut down this public safety hazard I predicted years ago this school massacre game would arrive. I hate being right all the time.
GOVERN YOURSELF ACCORDINGLY.
Regards, Jack Thompson"
I agree that the School Shooter game is out of line, but whatever the advocacy might have been is sure to get drowned out by Jack's insipid belief that his "threat" holds significant water to Valve.
He did not even say what will happen if the deadline lapses and Gabe Newell and the rest of Valve does not put a stop to the School Shooter game, so we're going to have to assume he's got a Plan B cooking up somewhere for the weekend.
Jack Thompson, unfortunately, had himself disbarred from practicing law for life because of his unstoppable outbursts, not only against the video gaming industry, but also towards the honorable courts.

Homefront has burst into homes early this week, and along with it came a throng of issues and controversies. Kaos Studio, however, maintains that despite the criticisms, the game should very well be worth every penny you spend for it.
One of the main gripes of gamers is the the seeming shorthandedness of the solo campaign. Despite this, however, General Manager David Votypka maintains that the presence of the multiplayer campaign and the upcoming DLC should be "a strong reason to keep the game."
He said thus, "The multiplayer has a fairly long unlock tree, it has a lot of replayability and certainly we're going to support the title with DLC as we're going support the title with DLC as well going forward."
And because Homefront gives gamers "an experience that feels different," it definitely will be worth the US$ 60 people will be spending for it.
"We feel that ultimately we wanted to make a game that people felt, 'yes, I want to spend my US$ 60 on that product. We think what we're delivering in Homefront is really compelling and also a lot of fun."
The game has so far gotten mixed reviews, making investors terribly uncomfortable with it. As a result, THQ's stocks experienced a downturn. It is the hope, however, that when the sales numbers come in, the company will be a bit more confident about it.
Homefront launched in North America early this week, while Europe will be getting it this Friday.

Ó

Rovio Games burst into videogaming stardom with a bunch of Angry Birds looking to retrieve their eggs. Because  of its immense popularity on mobile devices such as the iPhone, the company is looking forward, and they're setting their sights on something even bigger. Unfortunately, we don't think it's going to be towards consoles.
Peter Vesterbacka of Rovio has described console gaming as "dying". Making the statement at the Southwest Interactive conference in Austin, he expressed his apparent dislike for the traditional model being applied by console devs, charging US$ 40 to US$ 50 a game, which is also difficult to upgrade.
He also said that he's tired of the games being pitted against each other on the basis of one being just a mere "casual game" as opposed to the other being a "hard core" one. According to him, no one refers to movies as "casual movies", and that a game like Angry Birds can require the same amount of involvement and addiction as with any other "hard core" game in the market.
In fact, he's seen players throw their phones across the room in frustration when they don't beat a level. I haven't thrown my gadget yet, but I've come pretty close to doing so, so I can attest to this.
As to the business model for the fast-expanding mobile gaming industry, he says thus, "No one has figured it out yet" What's clear, though, is that it's opened up a huge business opportunity. However, he made it clear too that the key to Rovio's success is to not get too attached with any one particular model, and instead be open to experimentation.

Rovio Games made their mark in the mobile gaming platform, but does it warrant that success enough for them to say that console gaming is "dying"?
