Yet another high-profile dev starts a mobile games studio.
It seems like every week we get news of some prominent game developer firing up his own mobile games studio. Thank s to the low barrier of entry and small team size required for mobile games, pretty much anyone can cook up a mobile game (and reap the benefits).
Alex Seropian, co-founder of Bungie and the creator of the insanely popular Halo franchise, is the next guy on the list. His new studio, dubbed Industrial Toys, has just gone live and is promising to focus on “mobile games for core gamers.”  The mission statement for the company goes on to state that games should be “accessible without sacrificing quality,” a very good point, indeed.
Naturally, the company is still in its infancy and no new IPs have been announced. But we’ll keep you posted as details emerge. Seropian’s last projects were with his very own Wideload Games, which developed Stubbs the Zombie and Hail to the Chimp.
What do you think? Can mobile be a home for core gamers?

343 Industries debunks the rumor that Halo 4 won’t see this console generation.
343 has quite a lot on their plate right now, developing Halo 4 for a legion of waiting fans while at the same time struggling to make their mark as a first-time developer. Bungie set the bar pretty high with Reach, and everyone is a bit nervous about whether or not 343 can actually pull it off. At least one bit of speculation can be retired as of today – Halo 4 is not headed to some next-gen Xbox console.
While rumors swirled about the game becoming a launch title for a new Xbox system (which may see an announcement next year), 343’s Frank O’Connor confirmed that the game is being developed for the Xbox 360 console. I sort of thought this was the assumed path the game would take, but after doing a bit of research it looks like plenty of people were convinced they’d have to wait until the Loop or 720 or whatever before catching up with Master Chief.
Halo 4 is still in deep development but will likely see a 2012 release. Details are scant on the game and 343 is keeping plot, character and other information under close guard, so for now we’ll just have to wait for leaks to trickle out or official interviews before we can get deeper into the game.

The service, described by Activision as a “necessity” for future games, might be dead in the water for PC gamers.
Once upon a time, there was a company called Activision. This company, led by the shrewd but effective Bobby Kotick, practically reinvented the way games are developed, turning franchise studios into the equivalent of a car assembly line. Of course, Activision is always looking for ways to innovate (or, according to some gamers, squeeze a few more bucks out of customers), and their most recent idea came in the form of Call of Duty Elite.
Elite was intended to be a way to track your stats, interact with other players, and generally broaden your Call of Duty experience. Think of it like a new version of Bungie’s old stats tracker for Halo, or a slightly different version of Battlefield 3’s Battlelog. Elite came in two forms – free and premium, with premium subscribers also landing all future DLC and a couple of other perks.
But there was one problem with CoD Elite; mainly that Beachhead (the company behind the service) couldn’t get it to work for PC systems. When Modern Warfare 3 launched last week, we were told that Elite would be delayed for PC gamers due to concerns over stats rigging. Now, it looks like CoD fans may not see the service at all.
The official Call of Duty Elite Twitter page today posted a cryptic note indicating that while they’re working hard on Elite for PCs, they can’t guarantee “if or when” it will actually come around. That’s a pretty big “if,” considering how hard Activision pushed Elite as the future of gaming. This is just more bad news for the service, which has been plagued with issues since launching on consoles.
On the plus side, if you purchased Elite, at least you still get your DLC. Elite was a big chunk of the MW3 marketing blitz, so it’s unlikely they’ll completely scrap it. But PC owners may end up with a more limited version.
What do you think of Call of Duty Elite?

DICE apparently confirms that all squad management will occur in the out-of-game Battlelog system, sending many a “Battlefield” fan into a rage.
One of the best features of “Battlefield: Bad Company 2” is the ability to create, join and leave squads during gameplay. In addition to giving players the option of making a quick private squad with friends, the Leave/Join mechanism makes it easier for solo players (like me) to jump into a random game and immediately start assisting the team.
Squad play and management is largely what sets the “Battlefield” series apart from “Call of Duty,” which has always been much more of a chaotic rush for kills than an organized objective-taking experience. According to Daniel Matros, community manager for DICE, in-game squad management is now a thing of the past.
From Twitter:
“Voice chat and squadding will be on the Battlelog side of things”
While this is far from an absolute confirmation that players won’t be able to edit squads during games, it certainly reads that way. Many “BF3” gamers on Twitter are upset about the news, and Matros hasn’t made a move to clear up any possible misconception, so at the moment it looks like we’ll all be making extensive use of Battlelog.
For those out of the loop, Battelog is a web-based stats and social media hub similar in theory to the community site Bungie built for “Halo” fans. You’ll be able to interact with other players, view personal statistics, compare your stats to top-tier players and now, presumably, create and manage your squads. While this certainly doesn’t seem like the most convenient way to conduct an activity that worked perfectly well in the game, we do have to remember that “Battlefield 3” is in beta and things can still change.
On the plus side, there are rumors that Battlelog will be headed to your smartphone, allowing you to check in on stats and edit squads from anywhere you pick up a signal.

Cortana has proven herself to be one trusty sidekick for Master Chief. It's about time, therefore, that she plays a bigger role in the upcoming Halo 4.
343's franchise development director, Frank O'Connor, confirmed this news in a recent interview. Not only will she be giving a bigger role, but a "focal" one at that.
Said O'Connor, "I can tell you Cortana's going to be a focal point for Halo 4, for sure. I think a lot of people are speculating on Cortana's age and the effects of age on an AI, there's this thing called Rampancy which is really just any AI thinking itself to death and Cortana's been around for a while and most AIs have a lifespan of seven years."
"Cortana's a little bit different in that she's been exposed to a lot more technology and information than other AIs via the Forerunner lore and mythos. But her state of mind, her relationship with the Chief, they're all going to be core elements of the story and the 'human drama' as it were in Halo."
This is 343's first venture to the market with the highly successful Halo franchise, originally under the tutelage of Bungie. Early last month, Bungie officially turned over the rights to the franchise to Microsoft, ending a decade-long partnership. There's still no date set as to the release of Halo 4, but speculations are rife that it will be landing in 2012, along with the new Xbox 720.

All good things must come to an end. While Halo fans sure would not want this to be over, Bungie is set to divest themselves of their rights to the Halo franchise to Microsoft.
Bungie, most trusted for their spectacular work on the Halo franchise this past decade, has confirmed that they will be turning over Halo completely to Microsoft come August 2nd, 2011. This divestment of franchise rights mean that Microsoft will be the sole boss and owner of Master Chief and the rest of the gang.
That's not to say that it's going to be the last we'll ever see or hear from the developers, though. They will be moving on with Activision, under a 10-year contract, after all.
Meanwhile, the Halo franchise is set to remain being busy, with Microsoft having grand plans for it. Halo 4 is set to come out, allegedly alongside the launch of Xbox 720. An anniversary special, Halo: Combat Evloved, is also set for a Holiday 2011 launch.
Looks like they should both be fine parting ways at this junction. What's important is that they are ending their partnership with no ill-feelings. Well, at least until one of them speaks out against the other.

Last week, alleged information on Halo 4 circulated the Internet, fuelling the excitement of fanboys all over. Microsoft, however, has now denied the leaked information, saying that it is, at best, speculative.
The information, which was posted by a member of the Bungie forum, claimed that the fourth iteration of the famed franchise will be "set against the top secret Forerunner planetoid known to ONI as Sigma 7", where players "will encouter a dark new foe and unravel more of the mysteries behind the forerunners and the Office of Naval Intelligence." It also alleged that there will be a stronger focus on story telling, as well as an amped up player choice. For a speculation, it did seem exceptionally detailed. However, Microsoft insists that the only official thing they've sent out in relation to Halo 4 is the one they had at E3.
Said Dominic Carey, "The only Halo 4 detail shared with the media is the teaser trailer that was shown at the E3 Microsoft press conference. Nothing further detail on Halo 4 has been communicated with media. The forum post you refer to is speculative at best."

After denying it for ages, Microsoft's now come clean that Halo 4 has indeed been in the works for quite a while now.
In an interview with Gametrailers, Don Mattrick revealed: "Well it's been in development for multiple years, so I guess that counts as a secret." If that's the case, then there's a huge possibility that they started developing the game just around the same time as Halo: Reach, if not simultaneously with.
Rumors have been consistently strong that there will be another Halo on the way, despite Microsoft's repeated denials. They even went so far as to claim that they "almost went for Halo: 4 instead of Halo: Reach."
If anything, we have to give props to Microsoft for managing to keep it tightly under  wraps.

Microsoft has just announced that the blockbuster Xbox 360-exclusive from Bungie, Halo: Reach, is now officially a Games on Demand title for Xbox Live.
Unfortunately, just as that good news was announced, so there seems to be some issue with the game's Defiant Map Pack currently out on XBL. Some users report that they are not able to acces the three new maps due to a technical issue, which essentially keeps them from accessing multiple Marketplace items at one time.
Said items do not include Saved Games, Screenshots, or Saved Films. At least this is what we know of so far.
A post from the Bungie.net Blog said thus, "Right now, you can only have a total of three content items simultaneously active. Items that fit the bill include pre-order bonus or retailer exclusive armor, map packs, or your Bungie Pro confirmation."
What Bungie suggests as a quickfix in the meantime is for you to head over to your Memory menu and delete the "Bungie Pro Confirmation Marketplace Content item". This should be your safest bet since this won't affect your Bungie Pro membership at all, and will provide you that much-needed slot for the Defiant Map pack.
The Defiant Map Pack is now available on XBL for 800 MS Points. As for the Halo: Reach Games on Demand Edition, you can get it for UK£ 49.99. Make sure you have about six and a half GB space at least in your hard drive if you do decide to get the Games on Demand edition. And then some, so you can make sure that you'll have enough space to fit in the Defiant Map Pack as well, too.
Meanwhile, stay tuned for more updates from Bungie as they sort out this technical issue concerning the Defiant Map pack. We'll keep you posted.

What it was really was just a prank by David Aldridge, their netweork engineer. He pulled it during their presentation at the GDC. The last slide of Aldridge's presentation had this teaser of a statement: "massively good online games". He just wanted to see what happened, and, well, that's exactly what he got.
Speculations poured in as to whether or not Bungie is indeed entering the MMO market. But they showed it at the GDC! Surely, nobody pulls a prank like that during GDC!
They do, and they did. Coming clean on their weekly update, they said:
"Now, in rehearsal Aldridge was convinced that everybody got the joke. It was all in the delivery, he assured us, and he was certain it was clear that he was playfully riffing off of the recent rumors. Unfortunately, most of people can't figure David out - they can't process him. And we don't expect them to. You can't process David Aldridge with a normal brain. YOu don't need tiger blood and Adonis DNA."
There you have it guys, it was just a joke. If you got your hopes up high, at least you know who to blame for having it crushed down back to the ground.

homefront-thumbThe first-person shooter market that Homefront will be wading into next month is pretty competitive. That's something that comes hand in hand with being such a big slice of the video game industry. What makes thing all the more interesting is that Homefront will be pitting itself up directly against new installments in a few of the most reconized names in the FPS market. Developer Kaos Studios, however, think that their new IP has what it takes to stand up against the big boys.

hreachBy now, your copy of Halo: Reach must be sitting idly along with your other stash of video games. That is, of course, under the presumption that you have already finished it, and that there is nothing left for you to do in the game.
