Hacked Live User Reveals Xbox.com Weakness

Despite Microsoft’s insistence on the contrary, the recent spate of hacker attacks may have something to do with their official website.

We’ve seen this Xbox Live hacking story play out over the last few weeks, and we’ve seen the same arguments thrown up: Hacked users insist they didn’t do anything wrong, and Microsoft insists that Xbox Live is completely secure. Commenters then either bash hacked players for falling victim to phishing attempts, or cast aspersions on Microsoft for covering up a potential security threat.

As of today, we’re starting to see a few more details as to what may actually be causing the problem. Jason Coutee is a network infrastructure manager who also happened to have his Xbox Live account stolen and looted for 8,000 MS Points. Coutee conducted his own investigation (as is becoming the norm) and found a gaping hole in the security measures found on Xbox.com.

Apparently, Xbox.com allows for an infinite amount of incorrect login attempts. No matter how many times you get a password wrong, you can continue trying as long as you’re willing to enter a Captcha code. This means hackers have the option of brute-forcing account passwords, since there’s no consequence for a series of incorrect entries.

There’s naturally no word from Microsoft regarding the issue, and it’s unclear if this is the primary cause of the recent account hacks. However, it’s still a considerable security concern for a website that contains sensitive personal data and credit card information.

We’ll keep you updated as the story develops – we’re expecting some sort of response from Microsoft soon.

Just Dance is Really Popular

The popular dancing game has moved more copies than you can possibly imagine.

In the inner circle of gaming, it’s completely okay to make fun of games like Just Dance 3. Serious gamers think of them as niche products for kids and casuals, and it’s not rare to see a joke at the franchise’s expense over on Reddit or in the comments section of news posts.

What most gamers may not realize, however, is that Just Dance is ridiculously popular. Ubisoft has just revealed sales figures for the most recent iteration, Just Dance 3 – the game moved 7 million copies. That puts Just Dance 3 at second on the charts for 2011, placing it just behind Modern Warfare 3. Seriously.

The franchise haul for Just Dance is now over 25 million, making it one of the more prominent franchises in the world of gaming. Ubisoft also had some other interesting figures; for example, gamers dance to around 7.5 million songs per day.

It’s easy to forget that there’s such a big market out there for games that don’t involve jumping out of helicopters or slaying dragons, but the success of Just Dance proves that fun is the one commodity all gamers demand.

Firefall Beta Going Offline due to SOPA Opposition

Another developer goes on the record against the controversial bill, this time by taking their game offline.

SOPA resistance continues to mount across the gaming world, with more and more developers willing to take an official stance against the bill. Red 5 Studios, however, is going above and beyond the traditional press release and is instead shutting down the official Firefall beta servers on January 18.

The shutdown corresponds to other internet blackout events scheduled to protest SOPA – sites like Destructoid and Reddit will also be offline for the duration of the day. CEO Mark Kern noted that Firefall would remain offline for 24 hours, and that Red 5 is “ashamed” of the ESA for supporting such obviously damaging legislation.

He also stated that Red 5 would not be attending E3 unless the ESA is willing to reverse its stance on SOPA. The odds of that are pretty low, but it’s still nice to see a developer willing to speak its mind and take a firm stance. Kern believes that SOPA will not only be harmful to individual gamers, but to small development studios without the financial resources to defend themselves against “unwarranted shutdowns.”

Mojang has Three Unannounced Titles in the Works

The Minecraft developer shows no signs of slowing down.

Mojang, the company known far and wide as the developer of Minecraft, has long been forthright about their intentions to continue making interesting and successful games. They’ve been working on Scrolls for some time, and recently pushed the Alpha version of Cobalt live. However, it appears that the folks at Mojang are very busy bees indeed, and have another three games in the works.

In an interview with Edge, Mojang CEO Carl Manneh noted that all three games are scheduled for release sometime this year. While Manneh was light on the details, he did confirm that one of the new games is coming directly from Minecraft’s original creator, Mark Persson. Additionally, at least one of the new titles will see launch sometime in the first half of 2012.

Look for an official announcement sometime soon, as Manneh said that two of the games would likely be far enough along the development track for an early 2012 reveal.

Arkham City is the Top Rated Game of 2011

Metacritic’s numbers are in, and top honors go the Batman brawler.

Batman: Arkham City was obviously one of the best games of 2011. The game launched to both critical and player praise, and was one of very few games this year to earn a few perfect tens. Now, it looks like once all the reviews are tallied, Arkham City may actually be the most well reviewed game of the year.

Metacritic has just published its official top-rated games list for 2011, and the top ten should come as no surprise to anyone that played games last year. Arkham City took first place, followed by Skyrim and all three versions of Portal 2. Here’s the full lineup, courtesy of Destructoid:

1. Batman: Arkham City (PS3, 96)

2. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Xbox 360, 96)

3. Portal 2 (PC, 95)

4. Portal 2 (Xbox 360, 95)

Not really any surprises on this list, through the presence of different game versions does end up locking out a few games that should have been up there. That being said, we’d like to offer a congratulations to Rocksteady for topping the charts, as well as to all of the other developers that made a showing.

Bodycount director said Bulletstorm proved there's life outside of CoD

If there's one thing that Bulletstorm successfully proved, it's that there's more to life than just playing Call of Duty.

This was the conclusion derived by Codemasters' game director, Andy Wilson (Bodycount) out of the whole experience, as expounded on iIn an interview with CVG.

Here, he revealed that he considered Epic Games' Bulletstorm to be his "acid test" for how is upcoming game, Bodycount, will be welcomed when it comes out later this year.

"yeah, it is [promising]. It shows there's a market outside of Call of Duty. It shows that there's room aroudn those huge titles like Battlefield and Medal of Honor. It's nice to see that you can still have multi-million-selling FPS games that are not that."

"We looked at Bulletstorm and I think it's fair to say that it was a sort of 'acid test' for us. Because they were coming out first we were very interested in how they did and it's a very good sign."

Wilson's game, Bodycount, is coming out on August 30 for North America, while it's slated to launch in Europe on September 2nd.

If there's one thing that Bulletstorm successfully proved, it's that there's more to life than just playing Call of Duty.

New Bulletstorm patch released

Epic Games has released a new patch for Bulletstorm, sending out a fix for the bugs scampering about.

Apart from that, however, the patch also includes a more tailored matchmaking scheme for those with Gun Sonata DLC weapons, and more.

As soon as you log in to your game, the patch should be downloaded automatically. Either that or you restart your Steam client yourself to get it going.

Here's the full changelog for you:

Allows matchmaking for users purchasing downloadable Anarchy maps (Gun Sonata DLC Pack)

Fix for experience gains bar sometimes overlapping its UI space after matches during XP Multiplier Events

Fix for the Team version of the Double Penetration skillshot not appearing when used against Challenge enemies in some cases

Fix for the MOTD sometimes scrolling too fast after game launch

Anarchy Environmental Skillshot points are now accurate in the Multiplayer Skillshot Database

A player's Quick Match lobby will now properly recover to display "Searching" if the other players in the lobby leave during the map vote tally

Fix for extra points appearing in HUD during the Collapsed Building Echo (was causing it to appear as if the player "lost" points when falling through the doors in that Echo)

Fixed an instance of a crash while the game is reloading checkpoint after player death

Players can now exit the game from the title screen by using the ESCAPE key

The multiplayer beta of Gears of War 3 commenced earlier today, and already, videos from the beta are popping up the Internet.

This one is four minutes long, showcasing a montage of gameplay. You'll be glad to know that it's the gameplay footage they released earlier, which boasted of actual gameplay footage that looked like cutscenes, have actually been proven in this beta footage.

Come the third minute, you will be treated to action which includes snapping the head off the enemy and beating him to a pulp with it. These boys sure have a lot of rage, whacking away nonstop at the enemies.

It's nonstop brutal beating, so go check that video out!

The multiplayer beta now open for Gears of War 3 is accessible to those who bought the Bulletstorm Epic Edition. For those who are getting their beta access via pre-orders on GameStop, they'll have to wait a couple more weeks before they can hop on board.

The Gears of War 3 beta for those who bought Bulletstorm Epic Edition is up today, so know what are the details you'll need to take note of!

It's a brand new day, and what do you know! The Gears of War 3 beta for those who bought Bulletstorm Epic Edition is up today! But what are the details?

Epic Games' Rod Fergusson gave out the steps you'll need to take in order to make sure you enjoy the experience to the fullest.

"Bulletstorm EE owners only have 310 minutes till they can play #Gears3Beta," he posted at his Twitter. If he posted that tweet at 11:50PM EST, then that means that the beta will officially commence at 5AM EST/ 2AM PST.

We're sure you can't wait for that! It's literally just a couple of hours away from your fingertips!

The other thing to take note of is that you will need your Bulletstorm EE to get a title update. 88MB is the weigh-in of the initial download, after which, there's still another 500MB to follow.

Fergusson also forewarns that there might be some lag with the update, but don't worry as this is normal. "Like every other title update, it is likely to take a little time to propagate to all regions so don't freak out at 2:01."

Those who pre-ordered the game via GameStop will have their chance to join in on the fun come April 25th. Then all you can enjoy it until May 15th. After that, you'll just have to wait for the launch of the full game on Septembe 20th.
