Valve could be announcing Steam Box at GDC
What in the hell is Valve doing?
GDC is going on at the moment and I have a few friends checking it out, pitching games and showing off their work but with all the rumours flying around at the San Fran convention, I'd hate to be a Valve employee right now.
The great big PC developer and probably one of the only game studios who I respect and will follow till they release Half Life 3 and with the idea of making a console, looks like I better start saving up.
Steam Box is the tentative title that everyone is dubbing it on the interwebs but i tlooks like Valve may throw their hat into the console ring and I think that the only way it will sell is if they make Half Life 3 exclusive to PC and their console...it will be the highest selling console ever.
The rumours were fueled that the company have been toying with the idea of creating a proper set-top console that could pose a threat to not only current-gen but next-gen consoles. Valve co-founder recently told the guys at Penny Arcade that if they had to sell hardware, they will. This could easily just have meant Valve branded graphics cards or just some cool memorabilia like keyboards, mice or even headphones but if they make Steam Box...the world of video games may change forever.

New Command and Conquer will be an MMO
Tiberium Alliance will test your friends and your enemies
The Command and Conquer series, whilst never stale, had gone into a bit of a routine when it came to RTS games. The Red Alert 3 spinoffs and challenges had sold incredibly well for EA Games, but where were they to go next? Into playing with everyone apparently. The Free-to-play MMO started it's closed beta a few days ago and word has it that the game is fantastic.
The Generals franchise will be rebooted next year with the help of the guys at Bioware and Tiberium Alliances will be officially out next year. The new MMO is set in the Tiberian continuity which started back in the late 90's with Tiberium Sun. In the game players will fight together and build bases as apart of the on-going war against the mutants.
The game is developed by EA Phenomic, which developed the Spellforce, BattleForge and Lord of Ultima series. The game has been going on without a hitch so far and this is pretty good from EA who have in the past been known not to go too well with MMO's.
The thing I'm quite excited about which could push towards the realm of televised e-sports. Tiberium Alliances will boast live status streams and real-time news updates, forcing players to react to situations as they unfold. The game is actually built with HTML 5 technology, so the game can be accessed by standard web browsers and mobile devices alike, making it the first real big studio MMO on the go.

One of the most beautiful games in recent memory can now be played directly in your web browser.
You have to give it to Google – they’re certainly pushing the limits when it comes to developing online technologies. Their last round of innovation, known as Native Client, allows high-end programs to run on the simple Chrome browser through some sort of coding magic that I’m clearly not smart enough to understand.
However Native Client works, it has created an environment that allows Chrome to become a window through which top-notch games are played. And SuperGiant Games seems to be the first major developer onbard, announcing that they’ve ported their hit arcade game Bastion to the service.
Naturally, your system specs still play a large role in how well the game plays, but having it wired through the browser means you can access the game from practically anywhere. Check it out in the Chrome Web Store to get an idea of how well it runs on your system – if you like what you see, you can pick the game up for $14.99.
Bastion is more of an experience than a game, and if you haven’t played it, I would highly recommend you give it a shot, if not in Chrome then through Steam or XBLA. In the meantime, it’s going to be interesting to watch how developers use Google’s latest bit of technology – perhaps more big titles will see release soon?

EA’s plan to demand Origin accounts for Battlefield 3 access doesn’t seem to have worked out as they planned.
Battlefield 3 was a massive, massive launch, with 5 million copies sold in the first week. While the majority of players were able to get into the game fairly easily, a significant number reported major problems with EA’s Origin service. One report I read had nearly 30 steps taken by the player just to fire the game up for the first time. These problems seem to have fallen mostly on PC gamers, though console owners did have a bit of issue with crashing Origin servers blocking new registrations.
EA’s plan, of course, was to loop new players into their proprietary Origin system. Why let Steam take some of your profits when you can force players into another system, especially when you know they’re going to buy your game regardless of the hassle? Naturally, some players were very unhappy about the requirement, which once again unfairly impacts those that game on their computers.
It didn’t take long before a group of hackers, known collectively as Razor1911, hacked the BF3 client and removed the Origin requirements from online play. If you want to play Battlefield but don’t want to deal with Origin, it’s now a possibility – though EA will likely kill the functionality as quickly as they can.
The crack is not engineered to give players a free copy of the game, and works only on retail copies purchased legitimately from an online or brick and mortar shop. Here’s a statement from Razor1911:
“This release is dedicated to our fans worldwide who bought this game on legal way and don't want to install the trojan from Electronic Arts to play online.”
As a console gamer, I could care less about having an Origin account. I don’t have to suffer through using a browser to access the game, nor do I have to run some garbage program in the background just to play my favorite titles. I talked a bit about how annoying the Origin setup was in my PoV piece earlier in the week, but it’s been pretty smooth sailing for us console players so far.
But if you’re a PC gamer and you’re fed up with Origin’s ridiculous EULA or computer-bombing capabilities, it looks like the solution is out there. Just don’t be surprised if you end up with some sort of disciplinary action – EA will probably come down hard on hackers in the hopes of sending a message.

Let’s talk about some of the issues with Battlefield 3’s multiplayer, and why it sometimes feel like DICE may have released the game a pinch too soon.
I’m not a huge Battlefield fan. When I say that, what I mean is that I didn’t play the older games and don’t have any extreme allegiance to the brand. I do prefer Battlefield to Call of Duty due to the more realistic sniping mechanics and a greater focus on team play, but I’m not the sort of person that runs around preaching about which game is superior. I like Battlefield games, but I wouldn’t call them my favorites.
I picked up Battlefield 3 on launch day and have since been playing multiplayer whenever I have some down time. I should probably note that I have the Xbox 360 version, so some of the things I’m talking about may or may not be applicable to your personal experiences with the game. I’ve never put the campaign disc in the tray and I doubt I ever will, so I can’t really say much about the single player.
For the most part, multiplayer feels like a well-oiled machine. Most maps seem well planned and I’m getting a fair amount of fun from earning unlocks and capturing points. Though I’m focusing on complaints in this post, I do want to mention that I’ve had a good experience with the game overall.
Except for the following:
Origin/EA/Battlelog/Online Pass
I understand that creating loyalty is one of the key elements of managing a player base, but I play on a console. Having to create an EA account link it to an Origin, and then register an Online Pass via a website getting slammed by new players was a frustrating and unnecessary experience. I pay for Xbox Live – let me put my game in and play. I must say that I do really like Battelog, but the upfront inconvenience in getting started was pretty lame (and seems to be worse for PC players).
Scope Glare
Look, I play Recon. In fact, I play almost exclusively Recon. But, I play Recon – not “Camping sniper.” I spot targets, paint vehicles with the SOFLAM, capture points when I can and drop Radio Beacons. Anyway, in BF3 certain riflescopes have been given a glare effect to help limit the potential for camping. While I understand the mechanic, the glare is ridiculously bright, even in low-light situations. When I’m charging through a pitch black tunnel and I see something that looks like the north star shining out of the darkness, it shouldn’t turn out to be a scope. Needs to be toned down a bit.
Operation Metro CQ
If anyone out there has played Operation Metro in Conquest mode, you’ve probably noticed that the map is insanely unbalanced. Due to the map’s linear design and lack of flank routes, it’s much easier for the Russian team to capture point B and hold it. I would say that the majority of games I join for CQ end with Russia winning and the US losing – getting up and into point B can be quite a difficult feat. It’s also, for some reason, the only map that requires you to pass through one point to cap another – you can’t simply run around B to cap point A and put some pressure on, you have to go through point B first. Needs a little love for the US.
Jets
Jets are cool, I get it. But when I’m in a level with jets, it often seems like they’re playing a completely different game. I’m sure this is a failing of my teammates somewhere along the line, but all I ever see jets do is chase each other around and ignore everything that’s happening on the ground. Somewhere, someone has to have made a tutorial on how jets can apply to the ground game, so please watch it before you jump in the cockpit.
Technical issues
While the release version of Battlefield 3 is nowhere near as buggy as the beta, there are still a significant number of minor glitches and bugs. Texture pop, screen tear and a variety of weird clipping issues have shown up in my matches, with one in particular getting me killed (a two-inch step that has to be jumped over, since the character apparently can’t step). Also, the game often “forgets” which pistol I have equipped. Oh, and let’s not overlook the server issues – I always get a failed connection the first time I try and join.
So that’s a brief rundown of the common Battlefield issues I’m noticing. The list certainly isn’t comprehensive, but it’s made up of what has stood out to me as a player. Like I said before, they’re having a relatively minor impact on my play, but it’s still quite a few issues for a game that was supposed to be one of the best FPS experiences of all time.
If you’re playing Battlefield 3, what problems have you noticed that didn’t make the list?

Square Enix has tapped in a new COO in the person of Clinton Foy, and top on his priority list is to forward mobile and social development.
Foy actually acted is not exactly a new face in the Square Enix offices. He usted to be the Vice President for Business and Legal Affairs, and acted as General Counsel as well. Yes, he knows technology, and yes, he's a lawyer.
Square Enix' CEO Mike Fischer says of Foy's new role in the company, "One of the key responsibilities of the COO role will be to shape and drive more aggressive business development initiatives in free-to-play, social, mobile, browser, and emerging platforms. Clinton's valuable experience makes him uniquely qualified to lead our organization in these important areas."
Although Square Enix suffered back in 2010 due to a bleak market, they're out and gunning for more this year, with more new projects being teased on the way.
