Diablo III Item Database Hints at New Difficulty Rating

Fans of “Diablo II” will remember the Normal, Nightmare and Hell difficulties available to players that chose to repeat the game. Now it looks like there’s one more tier or challenges for the boldest demon slayers.

Blizzard recently dropped a massive items database onto fans eagerly awaiting “Diablo 3.” The database is packed with items from the game, featuring item stats, crafting recipes and armor sets. In theory, your could use this items database to build a sort of roadmap for how you’d like your character to progress, but it’s much more fun to sneak around in the files to see if they hint at any previously-unconfirmed information.

Thanks to a bit of sleuth work over at PC Gamer, it looks like just such information was discovered during a cursory investigation of the new database. While browsing the various tiers of Runestone available in the game, they noticed that this time around there were four tiers: Normal, Nightmare, Hell and Inferno. This means that “Diablo” fans everywhere can look forward to at least one more additional, and likely frustrating, run through the game.

You can browse items by class, by follower, or by simply clicking the various categories on the web page. It’s especially fun to browse the Legendary items, which boast incredible stats and one “random property,” which I can only assume translates into “of Fire Breathing” or “of the Demon Slayer.” Naturally, not every item has been made public as of this time, but the database still has plenty of information for the hardcore fan.

Personally, I’m a big fan of the “Uppercut” fist item. One tiny handle, one massive blade. If I can get one of those on each of my hands, I’d recommend that any and all scary monsters clear a path before I clear it through them.

Grasshopper's Codename D is Diabolical Pitch

They've now come full circle. At last year's Tokyo Game Show, Grasshopper Manufacture teased their new game, then dubbed as "Codename D". At this year's TGS, the company is now ready to open up about their project, and has actually gone on to reveal it in its entirety.

"Codename D", as it turns out, stands for Diabolical Pitch. It is a Kinect-enabled title, and in full anti-climactic fashion, is about baseball. Yes, never mind the "diabolical" word in the title. There are no monsters to defeat here, only monstrous pitches in out in the diamond field.

Features of the game apparently include a two-player co-op, with the players "lifting" each other up for health support.

Disappointed? I have to admit I was a bit. Going by the name alone, I was expecting gigantic fire-breathing reptiles living in dark, underground tunnels, waiting for weak human flesh to scamper by. No such luck, though. Oh well.

They did not give any specifics as to when it's coming out, but we do know it's definitely coming by way of XBLA. Oh, and that at last year's presentation, Suda described it as something that will not be featuring any guns and swords. Now that it's out of the bag, we instead expect gum.

"Guys, I don't get sent a list of issues by the IP legal review team in Japan so the exact reasons I couldn't tell you," he started.

"If it doesn't clear, it doesn't clear. There's some sort of legal exposure to us either from potential risk to someone else's IP or there are lapsed or non-covered middleware, voice work or soundtrack contracts.

No, you can't just 'pull these things out' and resubmit. There is no provision for new development in the PS1 re-release program. One needs to submit the ROM exactly as it was released. Trust me when I tell you, we'd love to make you happy and for my business purposes, I'd love to have the revenue. We aren't holding these things back just to upset you."

The reasons are still rather vague, but their sincerity in apology is palpable. Perhaps there just are too many factors involved that makes the release of Breath of Fire III on the PS Store not for clearance.

Anyway, we're still keeping our fingers crossed that a breakthrough will happen so that fans can get their Breath of Fire III fix soon.

GeoHot belies Sony's PSN account claim

The saga continues in the now epic battle between Sony and George Hotz. Having explained what he was doing in South America, PS3 hacker GeoHot now seems to have gotten his much-needed breather and is now ready to fire back at Sony.

The most recent claim of Sony is that they have now proved that GeoHot does have a PSN account, contrary to what he told to court.

Presenting documents, Sony alleged that GeoHot created a PSN account back in March 2010, going by the handle of "blickmanic". This account was traced by using the product code of the PS3 unit, which was then traced back to the store where it was bought, and then ultimately, to the address of the one who purchased it. Their findings: the PS3 wherein the PSN account was made can be found in GeoHot's residence.

Here comes the (latest) twist. GeoHot's lawyers say in response that Sony's findings are in no way conclusive because although the PS3 unit might have been traced back to their client's address, that does not necessarily prove that the PSN account was made.

How is this so? Simple. A neighbor who borrowed the said PS3 unit was the one who created the blickmanic account.

The said neighbor explains thus in the reply submitted by GeoHot's party, "See, I live next door to George Hotz and we've always been good friends. At the time I bought the console, I was waiting to be connected to the internet by my ISP so I asked Hotz if I could use his for a while. Good neighbors, that's all."
