Because without new Angry Birds levels, the games industry would surely collapse.
If you ask any serious game about the one thing they wish they had, chances are good they’d say, “More Angry Birds stuff.” Angry Birds is, in many ways, the best game ever made, and it’s ridiculous that anyone would play any other game. The immense depth, completely original concept and truly marketable characters set it above and beyond pretty much any other title.
If you, like the rest of the world, simply can’t wait to get your hands on new Angry Birds content, today’s your day. Or, well, March 7 is your day. Rovio, the luminaries behind Angry Birds have confirmed that the next groundbreaking update for Angry Birds Seasons hits digital stores on that date.
The new update, titled Cherry Blossoms, borrows a few themes from Asian culture. Beyond that, there aren’t many details available. But this is Rovio we’re talking about, so the new content is sure to be incredible.
I’m rapt with anticipation for yet another mind-blowing entry in what I would hands-down describe as the most compelling experience any gaming platform has to offer.
Thank you, Rovio.

Sales numbers show a strong start, but what is the real measure of Vita’s performance?
Last week, I wrote a PoV article titled “Vita will Fail.” In that article, I used the device’s performance in Japan and the lackluster reviews of its launch titles to draw the conclusion that the device would not be able to overtake its primary competitor, the Nintendo DS.
The comment war that erupted was one-part insults, one-part thoughtful commentary, and one-part argument over why exactly the Vita needs to beat the 3DS in the first place. This third thread in the conversation is intriguing to me, as I had approached the situation strictly from a Vita vs. 3DS perspective.
Today, Sony announced that the Vita has officially sold 1.2 million units since launching in December. Breaking that figure apart, the device moved around 579,000 before global launch, and an additional 600,000 since last week. This number is apparently higher than Sony’s internal expectations, so by all accounts we can consider the first week of global launch a success.
Which brings me to the question I’d like to pose in this week’s Sound Off: How do you define success for the PS Vita? Does it need to topple the 3DS?
Let us know in the comments.

Call of Duty locking DLC to ELite accounts
More Elite features include flipping the bird to consumers and making tonnes off money by being crazy
So Modern Warfare 3 made over a billion dollars last year and whilst Activision is tight lipped on how much has been made from their Elite service so far. The first two maps for MW3 have been released and the next few already teased but many CoD players have discovered a recent change in the DLC policy. This would have people shelling out more money for their maps but other profiles on the system will be unable to get their content without a second or separate Elite membership.
On the Call of Duty forums, there were 8 pages worth on a single thread of upset players who had their friends and family accounts discontinued or altered with no new maps because they didn't have a secondary account. What's even worse is that the new policy doesn't really work with the terms of services you encounter when you first download the content, which rather plainly states on the loading screen that: "You can use this item on the first Xbox 360 console you downloaded it to. Access to this item will also be granted to all users on this first console."
What would usually happen is that DLC on the 360 would be user agnostic and while your purchase (or any redownloads of purchased items) would be tied to your account, any XBLA games or in-game DLC would be on your HD and playable by any account on the 360, which you own. Microsoft's own digital ownership scheme, mimics real life ownership, so as long as someone has access to the content, you can let someone borrow it from you and play it on their own account.
However, with the CoD Elite service, you cannot do so and require your own user account to access the maps and DLC. For example, a single copy of the game could set you back several $50 a year per account to play on.
Whilst Activision is yet to make a comment on it, I'm sure the more "financially savvy" (See: Greedy) companies will probably adopt this system to make sure each user or member of a console will fork out a piece of dough to make sure they make up for the "lost millions" from pirates.
Not sure how many Call of Duty fans there are on this site, but I'm sure that more often than not there are criticism's spread far and wide about their handling of their Elite service as well as their user base. I do like Call of Duty in theory and in some aspects.
I think if the Black Ops zombie game was just a downloadable title I would buy that and every bit of DLC in existance, but alas we are burdened by terrible storylines, unrelatable characters and some insane visuals. They're not terrible games but their effect on the industry (see: BF3, Medal of Honor, etc.) can bar none see them as a culprit.

Blu-Ray, used games and Kinect, oh my!
We talked earlier about the rumors regarding the next Xbox and its processing power, but interesting tidbits continue to slip out over the course of the news day. Thanks to a few anonymous sources, we now have some more information regarding the Xbox 720, or whatever they’re choosing to call it. One note, before we begin: This information has been in no way substantiated by Microsoft, and should be taken with a grain of salt.
With the disclaimer out of the way, here’s the scoop on the next Xbox console. According to information retrieved by Kotaku, the next Microsoft console will boast full Blu-Ray support – a major selling point for the PlayStation 3 over the last few years. Additionally, the new Xbox may be shipped with the second iteration of the Kinect hardware, currently referred to as Kinect 2. The hardware is already being manufactured, and will see release in 2013.
The most interesting bit of news, however, has to do with used games. One industry source has noted that Microsoft is considering building an anti-used system into the new Xbox, one that would make playing used games effectively impossible. There are no details on how exactly this would be implemented, but it’s sure to be a hydrogen bomb of controversy if the rumor is true.
Regardless of speculation, it looks like we’ll be seeing the new Xbox and its Sony competitor sooner rather than later. Microsoft has, of course, refused to comment on any of the stories breaking this week and certainly hasn’t confirmed any leaked details.
That being said, what do you think of a possible anti-used game system in next-gen consoles?

The EVE Online and Dust 514 developer takes the lead in bringing microtransactions to the PS3.
Dust 514, the MMOFPS set in the EVE Online universe, is set for release sometime this year. The game will be launching on Sony’s PlayStation 3 console, but it’s the title’s interactions with CCP’s EVE Online that make it truly compelling. Dust 514 players will be able to interact with EVE Online players, with the actions of one group affecting the world of the other.
Virtual purchases have existed in EVE for years, mostly in the form of the PLEX license. This license essentially allows players to trade real-life money for in-game money by selling game time, and has been a pretty big success for CCP. However, the PS3 works completely differently, and so does PSN. So, CCP and Sony are now trying to figure out exactly how in-game purchases in Dust 514 will work.
CCP CEO Hilmar Pétursson briefly commented on the ongoing negotiations between his company and Sony Computer Entertainment, which apparently center firmly on how virtual purchases will be conducted in Dust 514. Issues on the table include pricing, the way in which revenue is split between the companies. They’re also discussing a potential retail release for Dust 514, as well as potential ways to link the PS Vita version of the game with the PS3 version and the greater EVE Online universe.
One thing’s for sure – if Sony and CCP can work out a viable method for dealing with in-game purchases, you can expect to see a lot more free-to-play games heading to PSN. Pétursson claims that the two companies are “breaking new ground,” and he’s absolutely right; the agreements made here could dramatically affect the future of PSN, and by extension Xbox Live Arcade.
What do you think of Sony and CCP’s plan to include virtual purchases in Dust 514?

Nintendo 3DS titles score the top three slots for 2011 sales.
Japan’s gaming market is very, very different from the one here in the west. Japanese gamers are big fans of portable titles, and they’re not really that into the AAA FPS blockbusters that seem to do so well in the U.S. and in Europe. With that in mind, the 2011 software sales tallies for Japan don’t really come as much of a surprise.
Mario Kart 7 landed firmly in first place, followed by Super Mario 3D Land. In fact, of the top ten games, five were exclusively available on a Nintendo console. The rest of the list belongs to the PlayStation 3, with not one Xbox 360 title breaking into the top ten.
Here’s the full list, courtesy of Edge:
01. Mario Kart 7 (Nintendo, 3DS)
02. Super Mario 3D Land (Nintendo, 3DS)
03. Monster Hunter Tri G (Capcom, 3DS)
04. Final Fantasy Type-0 (Square Enix, PSP)
05. Final Fantasy XIII-2 (Square Enix, PS3)
06. Monster Hunter Portable 3rd (Capcom, PSP)
07. Minna No Rhythm Tengoku (Nintendo, Wii)
08. Tales Of Xillia (Namco Bandai, PS3)
09. Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2 Professional (DS)
10. Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo, Wii)
What’s really amazing about Mario Kart topping the charts for the year is that the game didn’t hit shelves until December 1. That means that every one of the 1.16 million units sold moved in just a rough 30-day period. Not too shabby there, Nintendo. Also interesting is Final Fantasy XIII-2’s presence on the list, despite the fact that the game opened relatively weak and many news outlets lamented it as a failure.
So what do these numbers tell us about the western market? Nothing at all, of course!

We talked yesterday about the mass-suicide threat issued by 300 unhappy workers at the Foxconn plant in Wuhan, China. If you didn’t catch the article, here’s the basic breakdown: Foxconn oversees manufacturing for devices such as Xbox 360s and iPhones, and has been repeatedly in the news for poor wages and terrible working conditions. Earlier in the month, workers threatened to throw themselves off a building due to unfair working practices.
Now that news of this mass-protest is breaking into the mainstream press, Microsoft has issued an official statement regarding the matter. The statement is pretty boilerplate corporate dodging and discusses how Microsoft takes working conditions “seriously” and how the company launched an immediate “independent investigation” of the events in Wuhan.
According to Microsoft, the protests arose as the result of “staffing assignments and transfer policies” resulting from a “regular production adjustment.” However, Microsoft made no mention of the original issue cited by the workers – that they requested a raise and were told to either quit with compensation or continue at their current pay (and that the compensation was never paid to those who chose to leave).
Microsoft also had no explanation for why “regular production adjustments” would cause so much stress to Foxconn employees that they saw mass-suicide as their only option. Overall, it looks like your basic big company “we don’t know what happens in our factories” situation, with Microsoft either feigning ignorance or actually unaware of Foxconn working conditions. It’s hard to tell which is worse.
This story likely isn’t over, and we’ll do our best to bring you information as it breaks. In the meantime, you can read about some of Foxconn’s greatest hits here: Foxconn Plans Safety Nets After 12th Suicide

At this point, it’s probably safe to call Nintendo’s handheld a hit.
The Nintendo 3DS, which had one of the shakiest launches Nintendo’s seen since the Virtual Boy, can now be placed comfortably in the “Win” column. Since dropping the unit price and adding a few games to its roster, Nintendo has seen increased interest in the once-maligned portable console. And new numbers out of Japan indicate the 3DS is as strong as it’s ever been.
According to Andriasang, the Nintendo 3DS moved a whopping 1,492,931 units during the month of December (in Japan). Not only is that a massive number in terms of raw sales, it’s apparently a record – since system sales data began being tracked in 1997, no device has ever sold so quickly.
The Nintendo 3DS has sat at the top of the Japanese hardware charts for seven months in a row, and shows no signs of slowing down, especially when you consider the relatively weak launch of the PS Vita, which still managed to land in second place for the month of December with 402,794 units moved. Not too shabby, considering the device didn’t launch until the 17th.
Do you think the 3DS has sufficiently proven its viability, or will people in the industry still doubt it?

Having trouble with a certain fight in Star Wars: The Old Republic? Dance it out!
In news that comes directly from the “how in the world did this get overlooked” file, it appears that savvy Old Republic players have picked up on a hilarious and game-breaking glitch in the popular MMORPG. Namely, that dancing while in combat makes your player character completely immune to damage.
The bug isn’t necessarily a god cheat – you’ll have to activate the dancing emote at just the right moment to make it work. However, if you happen to pull it off, you’ll interrupt the targeting of any enemy scoping you out for the duration of your dance. Oops!
It’s amazing that this bug somehow made it into the finished version of SWTOR, and you can bet that Bioware will be getting it patched post-haste. In the meantime, any mention of the bug is being removed from the official SWTOR forums; Bioware claims this is just standard operating procedure (they don’t want players spreading glitches).
SWTOR is still young, so there’s bound to be a few weird bugs. Every MMO has them – what is your favorite legendary MMORPG glitch?

Ó

Despite the Wii’s lack of a patching mechanism, Nintendo has come up with a way to solve the game-breaking bug that’s leaving some Zelda players stranded mid-story.
We talked a bit about the Skyward Sword bug last week. If this is the first you’ve heard of it, here’s what’s been going on: completing certain events in the game may cause it to accidentally lock off the rest of the story, forcing you to start the whole thing over. Last week it was revealed that Nintendo is accepting Wii consoles for repair in Japan, but it looks like the games developer has actually come up with a method for patching their title.
In Japan, Nintendo has just added a channel to the Wii home screen titled the Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Restoration Channel. The entire goal of this new channel is fixing the bug and making your save playable again, and reports indicate that it’s been working.
Unfortunately, for some users, the special restoration channel only repairs files on the main Wii memory. Players that saved their Skyward Sword data to an SD card will still have to send the card in for restoration, unless Nintendo finds some way to update the patch channel.
There’s still no word on how Nintendo is going to address this issue in the west, but if the restoration channel proves successful, it’s very likely it will be hitting a Wii near you very soon. Not too shabby for a company that up until now had no way to update or patch a game.
Let’s just hope they learn from this mistake and build the Wii U with these types of issues in mind.

The new “Metro” dashboard update is causing a few problems for streaming video, problems Microsoft apparently knew about before launch.
Software launches are always hit and miss. Some features end up working just as planned, and others end up breaking or completely disabling your system. Win some, lose some. However, in most cases, the bad things that come with a software update are unexpected problems a developer must race to fix – not well known bugs that have been reported time and time again by your beta community.
This is exactly the case when it comes to the new Microsoft Xbox dashboard. The latest update, titled “Metro,” added all sorts of interesting features to the Xbox dash. It also, however, seems to have had a negative impact on the way videos appear on your screen. While not hugely different from the original dashboard video playback system, whatever Metro uses to show video is washing out colors and making videos look a little less vibrant.
The issue was reported several times by the beta testing community that had early access to the Metro dashboard, and Microsoft’s response was apparently, “Yeah, we’ll get right on that.” The video playback issue is especially strange when you consider that Metro is billed as the Xbox’s huge multimedia update, and it’s very annoying that they’d run a beta then ignore the feedback of their testers.
Overall, feedback for Metro has been mixed. Personally, I like some of it, and hate other parts. The Netflix update, for example, is pure garbage. But I like the revisions to the main screen; they make it easier for me to push through my most commonly used applications (read: Battlefield 3, Netflix).
Have you had any issues with Metro? What are your thoughts on the new dashboard?

Now that the Vita is actually out, some of Sony’s closely guarded secrets are becoming public knowledge.
When you’re about to launch a brand new piece of hardware to a mostly unconvinced public, you have to control every detail of what that public sees before the device hits shelves. The basic idea is simple: ensure that everyone who touches your device has the best experience possible, and doesn’t have enough time to hit any of the snags or bugs you’re trying to get worked out. Sony was very careful about making the Vita available for reviews and previews, but now that the device has hit shelves, some of the things the company failed to announce are hitting the web.
For example, the Vita cannot charge via USB. Though the device includes a proprietary USB cable for transferring data to and from the PS3, if you want to charge the device you’ll have to connect it to a wall outlet. Obviously, this isn’t a huge problem, but it could put a damper on your experiences when it comes to inter-device connectivity.
News is also breaking across the web that many Japanese customers are experiencing problems with their Vita, with the most commonly reported problem being unresponsive touchscreens and full system crashes. Additionally, we’re seeing intermittent reports of the screen completely failing, but it’s tough to get a bead on how widespread the issue may be. You can see an example in the image attached to this post, but without numbers it’s hard to tell if this is a big deal or not. Some systems are bound to fail, regardless of the product quality.
New hardware is always tough to nail down, so it’s expected that Vita will have a few problems. We’ll keep you posted as more information rolls in – for the most part the system seems to be doing relatively well, though it hasn’t sold out in Japan quite yet. Memory cards, on the other hand, are selling like hotcakes.

The games company scrambles to repair the latest Zelda title’s game-breaking glitch.
We talked last week about The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword’s game-breaking bug. If you missed the article and can’t be bothered to click the link in the previous sentence, here’s the basic gist: If you complete certain actions in a certain order, your game will essentially become stuck between events and impossible to complete. This bug crops up about 30 hours into the game, and if you hit it, you have to start over from your last save.
Unfortunately for Nintendo Wii owners, there’s really no such thing as a “last save.” Unless you painstakingly double your saves between the Wii and an SD card, there’s no way to recover old saves, which means you’re going to end up starting Skyward Sword from the beginning. Nintendo, being without a method to patch games, advised players on how to avoid this bug on their official site.
Now, the company is offering to patch the save files and repair the problem, with one catch: In order to take advantage of this offer, you’ll have to send your SD card or your Wii in to Nintendo for servicing. The process takes at least a week, though the company is expecting longer waits thanks to the holiday rush.
If mailing Nintendo your Wii doesn’t sound like something you want to do, the company is hard at work on a downloadable patch. There’s no infrastructure for Nintendo to deliver patches of this nature, so it could be a while before the whole thing gets sorted out. But, at least they’re working on it. It’s worth noting that these solutions are only available for Japanese players; we’re still awaiting word on what will happen for us in the west.
Have you had any issues with Skyward Sword? Would you send your Wii in for a broken game save, or just start over?

Conflicting stories creates confusion over the future of the STALKER developer.
Early this morning, news broke that STALKER developer GSC Game World had been suddenly shut down, with founder and CEO Sergei Grigorovich breaking the news to staff at a morning meeting. His decision was apparently due to his dissatisfaction with the progress of STALKER 2, though the sources on all of this information are a bit fuzzy – there are even reports pointing to some sort of police investigation.
The company quickly posted a message to its Twitter account stating that it wasn’t closing, but the message has since been deleted. In the meantime, some random guy who claims to have knowledge of the situation is confirming the shutdown, though he has also confirmed he’s not directly associated with the company. So, who knows?
In the meantime, it looks like the future of the STALKER franchise could be in serious doubt. If GSC shuts down, STALKER 2 may never see the light of day – a real bummer considering the game has been in development for over a year.

The latest Legend of Zelda game has a massive, game-destroying glitch. Find out how to avoid it.
News started to spread a few days ago that some players were having difficulty with their copy of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Namely, that the game was stuck in some sort of frozen time state, where whatever events needed to occur to start the next section weren’t happening.
It turns out that there’s a huge bug in Skyward Sword, and if you happen to run into it, the only way to rescue your game file is to restore from an earlier save – a thing you can’t do on the Wii unless you’ve backed up to an external memory source. In short, this means that if you run into the bug, which occurs about 30 hours in, the only solution is starting your game from the beginning.
Here’s the bug, with minor spoilers: At some point in the game, you’ll be given the option to visit the Thunder, Fire, or Water Dragon dungeons. If you travel to the Thunder Dragon first and then speak with a certain Goron, your game will be forever frozen at that point – the events for the other two areas will not begin correctly.
You can avoid the glitch by simply completing the Fire and Water Dragon quests before speaking with the Thunder Dragon. Nintendo has confirmed that the bug exists and offered information on how to avoid it, but there’s no real way to patch games on the Wii – the bug here to stay, until new discs are printed.
What, if anything, do you think Nintendo should do about the bug?

Bethesda’s latest content update is causing major problems for the enormous RPG.
Skyrim has more than a few bugs. While most of these bugs are small and shouldn’t cause players too many problems, others, like the PS3’s inability to keep playing the game, are major. Bethesda was looking to solve some of the larger issues when it pushed a patch through for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game, but in doing so seems to have broken some other things.
Most importantly: resistance. The in-game mechanic that stops your character from taking certain types of damage, i.e. frost resistance or fire resistance, is now completely broken. Armor that offers some sort of resistance bonus isn’t delivering the damage reduction it should, and players are not happy.
There’s another, smaller issue post-patch – some dragons are flying around backwards. This bug is obviously far less important than the complete disintegration of a vital in-game mechanic, but still does plenty to ruin the aesthetic of the game. Some players are also reporting more frequent crashes.
One has to wonder what Bethesda is thinking this morning. They rushed to patch their game due to a tidal wave of player complaints, but perhaps were a little too eager to push out an update. Now, players will have to deal with game-breaking bugs until the developer can sort out what exactly they tweaked in the update.
I haven’t downloaded the patch to my 360 quite yet, so I’m thinking I may just disconnect the box from Live before I start it up. I haven’t run into any huge bugs without the patch, and I’m certainly not going to purposefully break my game.
What do you think about the patch? Was Bethesda right to rush to solve the problem, or should they have been a little more careful?
