Bethesda releases full patch notes for their latest Skyrim update, now in the certification testing.
It seems like it’s been forever since the launch of Skyrim, but millions of gamers are still spending their free time slaying dragons and “accidentally” murdering their followers. And, as is customary with Bethesda games, Skyrim still has a fair few issues interfering with players’ ability to fully enjoy the game.
The company is more than aware of Skyrim’s issues and has been working non-stop to get them fixed –especially the ever-present PS3 bug that makes the game nearly unplayable for some users. I’ll skip the analysis and go straight to the patch notes. If you’re a Skyrim fan, you’ll want to read through these:

Reports of game.co.uk being compromised appear to have been greatly exaggerated.
Early this morning, Softpedia posted an update alerting gamers to the fact that the Game Group website, located at game.co.uk, appeared to have been compromised. The report stemmed from a Pastebin post, which purportedly contained the email addresses and passwords of over 200 Game Group users. Site visitors were warned to change their passwords to be safe.
Game Group has responded to the alleged security breach by claiming that the information in question didn’t come from their website, and that none of the posted email addresses are those of their users. They went on to say that they (duh) take security very seriously, and that after looking into the Pastebin post, they can confidently claim that no user information has been compromised.
The company assured customers that their personal and payment information was safe, and invited anyone with questions to contact their customer service department. So, it looks like your Game Group information may be secure after all. However, you may want to change your password just in case – this wouldn’t be the first time a company has denied a very real security breach.
Do you think the hack is fake, or is it more likely that the company is trying to cover its tracks?

The maker of World of Warcraft is concerned over the potential security risks posed by the recent hacking of another popular MMO.
We reported last week that Rift, a very popular MMORPG published by Trion Worlds, had suffered a major security breach. The hackers assumedly didn’t get any credit card information, but user passwords may have been compromised. This led Trion to reset the Rift passwords for all users, just to be safe. They also awarded players a special item that awards players 10% more gold when looting, in case they had to take the realms down.
Today, Blizzard fired a message out to World of Warcraft subscribers via its official Twitter account, stating that if you use the same password for more than one game, it may be a good idea to change it. Since Rift password information has potentially been compromised, it’s safe to assume that clever hackers may try that information to access accounts in different games.
Blizzard didn’t call Rift out by name, referring only to “one of the more popular MMOs,” but the message is clear – if you play Rift, make sure your password is safe. If your Rift account and WoW account share similar information, both are at risk regardless of which developer is compromised.
This is an interesting moment for the world of gaming. No matter how amazing Blizzard’s internal security may be, they’re only as strong as their users and the other games those users play. Seems frustrating, from a security perspective.
Did you get caught up in the Rift hack? And do you use the same password across several sites/services?

The hugely popular freemium MMO has suffered a devastating security breach.
Nexon has an incredible empire going right now, with games like MapleStory, Combat Arms and Mabinogi quietly amassing millions of players while the gaming industry obsesses over games like Skyrim and Modern Warfare 3. It’s really quite amazing – they have some of the largest subscriber numbers in the industry and not too many “gamers” are that familiar with their work.
MapleStory is one of their largest successes, boasting over 100 million subscribers – that’s ten times World of Warcraft. Of course, MapleStory is free to play, and Nexon has confirmed only around a million players purchasing things in the cash shop, but the game is definitely a large player in the global MMO market. Now, it looks like some of those players’ information may be at risk thanks to a fairly large hacker attack.
Nexon reported that it discovered a breach of its South Korean network, which resulted in the information of over 13 million subscribers being compromised. The information includes usernames, real names, passwords and the residential registration number of the player. At this time, the breach only affects Korean players, as Nexon uses separate servers for each country. However, it stands to reason that security holes in one network exist in others, so MapleStory players should be wary regardless of their location.
Nexon cannot confirm whether the information was actually stolen, they can only say that it was accessible. Either way, it’s a harsh lesson for one of the larger companies in the freemium market, especially when you consider how important it is that Nexon keeps your credit card info on file. If people are unwilling to share their information with Nexon, their cash shop goes right down the drain.
Do you play MapleStory? Are you concerned over Nexon’s ability to protect your personal information?

Sony looks to solve a few minor problems with a quick, simple update for your PS3 software.
If you love minor, behind-the-scenes updates to your gaming hardware, then today is certainly your day. Sony has just pushed firmware update 3.73 to the PSN servers, and while the download isn’t mandatory it’s probably something you should take part in just to ensure you’re as up to date as possible.
Of course, Sony is being purposefully vague in regards to what exactly the patch does, saying only "Stability during use of certain PS3 format software has been improved." This message should be familiar to PS3 owners, as it’s the same basic message they get any time firmware updates com along.
It is curious to see a firmware update released so quickly after the last one – it’s only been about a month since 3.72 – and I can only wonder if it has anything to do with the last batch of PSN account hacks. While Sony was adamant that their network wasn’t breached and the hackers were trying old data, it always makes me feel a bit odd to see a firmware push immediately after a confirmed attack. Of course, if a firmware update is critical for fixing PS3 problems, it’s usually not optional.
Either way, staying up to date on your firmware keeps your PS3 and its data a bit safer (except for when it bricks the console, but hey – that’s rare). Most of the time Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo will force you to update firmware, but in this case it looks like it’s largely up to you.
Do you ever get the feeling that a quick firmware rollout is in place to solve a problem you haven’t yet found out about?

Sony just can’t get a break from hackers as they test the login details of thousands of compromised PSN accounts.
The incredible hacking scandal that slammed PSN over the spring still leaves a bitter taste in the mouth of many gamers, and as of last night, things seem to have gotten worse. Philip Reitinger, the new Chief Information Security offer for Sony, has confirmed to users that a massive wave of account sign-in failures was detected on PSN last night, leaving the company to believe that a group of hackers is testing the login information to verify its accuracy.
More concerning is the fact that these accounts seem to be unrelated to the ones that were compromised in April, meaning Sony has another information leak that they haven’t even detected yet.
Here’s what Reitinger had to say regarding the possible breach:
We want to let you know that we have detected attempts on Sony Entertainment Network, PlayStation Network and Sony Online Entertainment ('Networks') services to test a massive set of sign-in IDs and passwords against our network database," he wrote. "These attempts appear to include a large amount of data obtained from one or more compromised lists from other companies, sites or other sources."
In this case, given that the data tested against our network consisted of sign-in ID-password pairs, and that the overwhelming majority of the pairs resulted in failed matching attempts, it is likely the data came from another source and not from our Networks.
According to Reitinger’s post on the PlayStation blog, the hack only affects about 0.1% of PSN users. This translates to around 93,000 accounts, so while it’s a low percentage, a significant number of PSN subscribers may have been impacted by the hack.
Sony is sending emails to all of the affected accounts with information regarding password changes, and wants consumers to know that credit card information is not at risk.
Still, another breach of PSN doesn’t look great for a company still trying to convince users it’s responsible enough to protect their data.

Backlash over the insertion of class-action prevention clauses leads a group of gamers to build a site that helps other people opt-out of these rights-limiting agreements.
In a recent software update, PSN inserted a clause that prevents gamers from participating in a class-action lawsuit against Sony into the EULA. Many gamers saw it as a shady response to the recent lawsuits filed over the PSN privacy breach, and if you accepted the new EULA agreement when you updated your PS3, you’ve already waived your right to participate in a similar lawsuit if your information is compromised again.
In order to opt-out of the clause while still accepting the EULA (and thus, being allowed to use PSN), you have to mail a physical letter to the Sony legal department. Obviously, Sony is banking on the idea that most people are going to accept the EULA without reading it, and won’t find out about the rights they’ve waived until something goes wrong. However, a group of Redditors incensed over the change has created GamersOptOut.com, a site designed to help gamers opt out of these rights-hampering clauses.
The site currently allows you to choose which EULA you have an issue with, either Sony/PSN or EA/Origin. You’ll have to enter your account name and a few personal details, and the site will generate and send your opt-out letter on your behalf. You can donate money to the cause if you want, but all letters are free of charge.
Naturally, you should always be cautious with your personal information, especially when it comes to your online accounts. You always take a risk sharing info with someone via the web, but the site’s owners are publicly listed and you can find their gamertags right on the page.
If you don’t use the site, you should still walk through the simple process of writing the opt-out letter and sending it in. If something goes wrong with Origin or PSN and your identity is compromised, you’ll want the full protection of the law rather than what the parent company has decided you deserve.

This is so messed up it's true. According to reports, South Korean cops have captured five North Korean hackers who have been breaching through security systems of online games to steal money.
Their M.O, according to the Seoul-based authorities, use farm bots to gather items from games such as Lineage, which they will then sell over the auction systems in exchange for real money.
So said Senior Officer in South Korea's International Crime Investigation Unit, Chun Kil-hwan, in an official statement, "They regularly contacted North Korean agents for close consultation." Before the hackers were foiled, they had already managed so far to steal about US$ 6.3 million in the past two years. After getting their cuts from the transactions, they will then pass over the rest of the stolen funds to North Korean officials.
The hackers, Mr. Chung also posited, are graduates of North Korea's elite science universities.
It is of the belief, furthermore, that North Korea is resorting to such dirty tactics in order to buoy up their funds, which have been drastically dwindling in the past several years, thanks to the economic sanctions imposed upon them.
North Korea has so far denied knowledge regarding any of these allegations, and have instead pointed the blame finger back to Seoul police, claiming that they are merely fabricating this conspiracy to put them in an even worse light.

After two months of being decommissioned, PlayStation Store will now officially be coming back to Japan this week.
This was confirmed by Sony Computer Entertainment themselves earliers in a press release sent out. The PlayStation Store service should be back to normal service in Japan by July 6th, Wednesday.
As to why it took this long before the PS Store gets back on for the Japanese, Sony did not offer any explanation. As previous reports would have it, however, the Japanese government weren't satisfied that security measures fully met their standards, hence they did not get the green light for the service's return.

Last Friday, Sega confirmed the unfortunate news that their online service, Sega Pass, had been hacked, and therefore had to be taken down. Today, the publisher confirmed that pertinent details of their customers did get stolen.
In a press release sent out earlier today, Sega revealed the real extent of the damage that the hack brought about. A whopping 1,290,755 accounts were affected, with information such as names, email addresses, birth dates and encrypted passwords. Fortunately, if you could take it that way, no financial data were on Sega Pass.
Said Sega, "We express our sincerest apologies to our customers for the inconvenience and concern caused by this matter. Sega Pass is the service used to provide information about our new products to registered members and does not hold any customer financial information.
After the unauthorized entry was identified, we immediately stopped the Sega Pass service and took emergency action to prevent further damage. This action included immediately contacting all our registered Sega Pass users. We are now fully investigating the cause of the incident."
The publisher also reassured that they will be keeping customers abreast on the developments through their official website for Sega Europe. Because of this intrusion, they have also promised that they will "strengthen network security as a priority issue."
Sega is the most recent prey to the hacking shennanigans, along with BioWare, Eidos' Square Enix, and Bethesda.

The whole George Hotz drama may be over, but it's definitely one experience that Sony will not be forgetting any time soon.
If there's anything that they'd want people to realize from that experience, though, is that Sony as a company is not completely against hacking. Nay, in fact, they support it. Just that, it's not the kind of hacking that people would normally think of when the H word is uttered.
Said Jack Tretton in an interview with New York Times when asked if "Sony wants to deter customers from modifying the PlayStation 3,":
"No, there's a real misnomer there, we embrace independent game development; if you call that hacking, then we embrace that. We give people tools that let them create new experiences. What I don't think we are in support of is someone trying to hack our device to pirate software and possibly collapse the platform."
Sony has been involved in a whirlwind of hackery drama this year, first with PS3 hacker George Hotz, which eventually ended in a settlement, and then with the highly publicized PSN security breach.
