Mass Effect 3 also to have PSN Pass?

And here we have more news on the PlayStation Pass. This time, is Mass Effect 3 going to be joining in on the bandwagon, too?

According to a South African retailer, the answer to that would be yes. Their advertisement on the game, so they say, claim that BioWare's space shooter will indeed be carrying the "online multplayer pass" requirement. More specifically said PSN Pass will be included in the Collector's Edition of Mass Effect 3.

Despite this "confirmation" from the retailer, however, we're going to have to tag this under the Rumor category, simply because we still have no official word from the authority that is BioWare.

Earlier this weekend, we also received word that Uncharted 3 will be featuring the PSN Pass. A lot of players are sure to be pissed about this, for sure, but as with any other "required" features for the PS3, we doubt they'll boycott the game totally because of it.

We might have to wait till later, though, before we get any confirmation from them, since the game won't be out till March of next year, anyway.

Level-5 skipped TGS because?

Level-5 was significantly absent for this year's Tokyo Game Show. True, they did have Ni No Kuni over at Sony's booth, but knowing how much fanfare they've always had at the event, it certainly is a wonder why their presence is not as strongly felt this year.

Take it as some kind of boycott of sorts. Not that they have any beef with TGS. It's just that, they'll be having their very own conference, and it's cutting it too close to the event. Obviously, if they have anything to present, might as well bring out during their own affair, right?

That "own affair" is nothing else but the Level-5 World event happening on October 15th and 16th. It is going to be held at the Makuhari Messe, also where TGS is traditionally held.

We might as well expect some more Ni No Kuni goodness coming in from the Level-5 World event. Until that haens, though, we'll just bring in the latest from the TGS.

Battlefield one-ups Modern Warfare 3 in pre-order

This early on in the heated competition, looks like one title is clearly edging out over the other in terms of pre-order sales.

Battlefield 3 is outselling Modern Warfare 3, which is "definitely a first". This was confirmed by GameStop insiders to Hiphop Gamer. Apart from that, news also has it that the retailer apparently has a standing order to push Battlefield 3 towards customers more than Modern Warfare 3. Looks like EA really is working hard to get those promotions and marketing rolling hard on the tracks.

Now, we have to give credit where it's due, and in this case, EA does deserve an applause for their efforts at putting their title on the top of the charts. They have so far been very vocal about acknowledging that Modern Warfare 3 is their tight competition in this race. But they did not merely stop with the acknowledgment, they actually pursued and followed through with their commitment to step it up, this despite the calls for a boycott against their title.

Both games are not out yet, but we shall soon see who will come out as the winner in the end. For now, though, given this information from GameStop, Battlefield 3 apparently has got that edge over Modern Warfare 3. Now what are you going to do about it, Activision?

PoV: Boycotts in the gaming industry: boon or bane?

Like any other product out in the market, video games are vulnerable to public reaction. If they deem something improper or not akin to their sensitive tastes, they can call for a movement to ban these titles. If banning is not feasible, then other alternatives are there to ensure that the said game does not get support from the consumers, such as by calling for a boycott.

The most recent controversy involving a video game in a boycott is EA's Battlefield 3. The call for boycott was forwarded by online link-sharing community Reddit, upon the "unfair advantage" they have spotted with the pre-order goods. But that's just one sample right there.

Throughout the years, boycotts range from pervertly-themed games to outright violent ones. The Columbine game received such violent reaction that it had to be pulled down. Ubisoft's We Dare also got the cold treatment from concerned parents, even at just its mere concept, that the publisher eventually had to call it off.

From a consumers' standpoint, it is definitely a powerful tool that we can wield when things get rough for us. The idea of having games boycotted is enough to send cold sweat trickling down a publisher's spine. And really, it's just about one of the very few options consumers have to keep companies and their sometimes overzealous, poorly-concealed attempts at getting more money than they actually deserve in check.

For some instances, though, it becomes more of a nuisance instead of a helpful tool. What about you, do you think boycotts are effective, or are they just empty threats?

EA boss admits Modern Warfare 3 is competition for Battlefield 3

Publisher EA has set their eyes on the competition, and they've named it to be Activision.

Since they're coming out with Battlefield 3, they've thereby proclaimed Modern Warfare 3 as the obvious competition for it. EA president Frank Gibeau proclaimed that it's "going into a heavyweight fight" with MW3, that Battlefield 3 is, definitely.

And although MW3 may have a "25 million head start", Gibeau remains confident that their game will be able to offer "a generational breakthrough in terms of technology."

Another thing they're looking forward to is the alternation of their franchises so that they can go head to head with the annual CoD franchise. "Battlefield and Medal of Honor will be a part of a rotation that we go after the shooter category with... the Medal of Honor and Battlefield teams are now operating in the same group together so they can share tools, technologies, innovations, without feeling like the same games."

"We have a [Battlefield 3] team that's been together for ten years. The Medal of Honor team was fairly new, they were using middleware and software that had already been out there, so... They're a great team, and we're going to continue to invest in them, but we're going to approach it slightly different than we did before."

Anoymous to haters: We're your friends, not criminals

Anonymous released a statement addressed to the users, calling them "paranoid jerks" for thinking that they are criminals, instead of friends.

Anonymous rocked the world of Sony, and consequently, that of the PlayStation 3 users, when they staged attacks against the company for their alleged selfish inclinations regarding information about their technology.

While their advocacy is supposedly to forward the cause of the users, Anonymous isn't getting as much love as they would have wanted, or expected.

Their attacks have so far caused more trouble to the gamers than to Sony itself, with hundreds not being able to enjoy the services of the PlayStation Network at one point.

Just last week, Anonymous staged two "major" boycotts against Sony, both of which did not really meet their expectations. Now, the group is releasing a statement addressed to the users, calling them "paranoid jerks" for thinking that they are criminals.

Said an Anonymous representative in an interview with an Italian website:

"I wish that all should (be) inform(ed) on the events (of) Anonymous and do not judge the story without first being well informed. Anonymous does not want to be an enemy, Anonymous is a friend of the people, if you think Anonymous is wrong do not hesitate to have your say, do not let anyone manipulate your ideas and do not let yourself be caught by appearances.

Above all, we are not criminals, paranoid jerks. Anonymous is composed of all races, sex and religion. It's just the tool to awaken the global consciousness, at least in the network. There are people who daily kill, steal, but it's right there sitting on a leather arm chair."

The group has also previously guaranteed that they are not done going after Sony.

Last weekend, Anonymous geared up to be what was supposedly their big protest against Sony. The only problem was, it wasn't as huge as they expected it to be.

The group called for PlayStation 3 users to boycott Sony in several stores, but has failed to cause any backbreaking damage to the company. "Moderate success" was how they characterized the April 16th boycott.

They're not about to give up the fight, though, as the group has now released another video calling for another protest, this time, tagging it as "the big one".

They're molding it as a global portest against Sony's belief in "their right to turn a profit on your ability to share information."

So what do they intend this time to showcase their patent abhorrence for Sony?

Here's their gameplan laid out in this image they released, alongside the video calling for the newest boycott:

Connect to local wifi connections at Sony stores and DoS the local IP. Use Man In The Middle attacks, use up their bandwidth.

Megaphones are awesome. Use them creatively and consistently.

Target stores - Complain to their managers. - Constantly phone the stores. - Cause mental mayhem. Skype, VOIP, and PrankDial.com are great telephone tools.
