CEO Mark Pincus disagrees with allegations of concept copying, instead preferring the term “evolution.”
Last week, we talked a bit about Zynga’s latest game, Dream Heights. More specifically, we talked about the fact that Dream Heights is a pretty blatant copy of 2011’s official iPhone Game of the Year, Tiny Tower. At least, that’s how Tiny Tower’s developer, NimbleBit, feels.
Zynga CEO Mark Pincus disagrees with NimbleBit’s assertions, and instead believes that Dream Heights is just the next evolutionary step in a long line of tower games. His response, issued in an internal memo, referenced games like SimTower and Yoot Tower as other games that laid the framework for Tiny Tower, which in turn served as the basis for Dream Heights.
For the sake of fairness, here’s a direct quote:
“With regard to Dream Heights and the tower genre, it’s important to note that this category has existed since 1994 with games like Sim Tower and was more recently popularized in China with Tower of Babel in 2009 which achieved 15 million DAUs. On iOS there has been Yoot Tower, Tower Up, Tower Town, Tower Blocks and Tiny Tower. Just as our games, mechanics and social innovations have inspired and accelerated the game industry, its 30 year body of work has inspired us too.”
Of course, SimTower and Tiny Tower are very different games, a point made by NimbleBit’s Ian Marsh in the company’s rebuttal:
“It is a smart idea for Mark Pincus and Zynga to try and lump all games with the name Tower together as an actual genre whose games borrow from each other. Unfortunately sharing a name or setting does not a genre make. The games Pincus mentions couldn't be more different.”
He continued:
“If you take a quick look before "pulling the lens back" as Pincus suggests, you'll find an innumerable number of details in the game that were painstakingly crafted to be identical to Tiny Tower. These are core gameplay mechanics and rules, not similar settings or themes that games in the same genre might share.”
Pincus also took time to address allegations by yet another developer, Buffalo Studios, that the company had ripped off their design for Bingo Blitz to make the upcoming Zynga Bingo. Pincus wrote a missive similar to the original NimbleBit post, complete with picture-by-picture comparisons of how Buffalo actually ripped off Poker Blitz, an earlier Zynga title.
The whole thing is devolving into a running joke where one company says the other copied, and the accused company goes farther back in the books to claim the same about the accuser. One thing’s for sure, Zynga obviously doesn’t feel like what it is doing is wrong.
What do you think? Where is the line between being inspired by someone’s work, and copying it?
Also, you should absolutely read the full interview at GamesBeat.

Bethesda releases full patch notes for their latest Skyrim update, now in the certification testing.
It seems like it’s been forever since the launch of Skyrim, but millions of gamers are still spending their free time slaying dragons and “accidentally” murdering their followers. And, as is customary with Bethesda games, Skyrim still has a fair few issues interfering with players’ ability to fully enjoy the game.
The company is more than aware of Skyrim’s issues and has been working non-stop to get them fixed –especially the ever-present PS3 bug that makes the game nearly unplayable for some users. I’ll skip the analysis and go straight to the patch notes. If you’re a Skyrim fan, you’ll want to read through these:

Recent rumors indicate Nintendo may be looking to port books and magazines to its upcoming Wii U console.
We already know that Nintendo is working on an app store for the Wii U, however we don’t really know what sort of apps to expect. It’s obvious they’ll be incorporating as many media options as possible in an effort to expand the appeal of the device, and one rumor in particular indicates that the company may be looking to E-Readers as its next field of play.
Nintendo is apparently reaching out to certain iOS developers and requesting that they develop software for the Wii U – one developer in particular notes that the company is focused on bringing newspapers, magazines and user manuals directly to the devices’ tablet-like controller.
If true, it’s a sharp idea on the part of Nintendo – tablets are an incredibly hot market, and the likely low price point for the Wii U will make it the perfect entry-level device for both gaming and tablet multi-tasking. Of course, this is all still in the rumor phase; anything can happen when it comes to Nintendo.
My favorite part of the rumor: digital delivery of Nintendo Power. I used to love that magazine back in the Super Nintendo heyday; it would be fun to re-up with a digital subscription delivered directly to my Wii U.

Take Skyrim books everywhere.
I think I might just read up on the history of my people on the train.
Skyrim has changed the face of gaming this year. Whilst there have been many open world games, I haven't seen this kind of mad memedom since Minecraft was in mid-Beta. The game is immense and in that hyperbolic size, there are books. Big brash and embolded books that contain every single detail about Skyrim, from the dragons to the seas.
Now you might not want to read those books and maybe you have to go to work to fund your addiction of buying plushie swords from Etsy that look like the ones you have in Skyrim. So with that job may take a commute and you may want to read in that travelling and now what shall you read? The books from Skyrim.
Yep, every book in Skyrim you can read. But now, thanks to the work of a Mr. Johan Gutenberg,  a software dev who is called Capaneus, who has written all of the written material in the world of Skyrim to now be readable by your Kindle or other e-Reader. On a train, on a plane, in a car, going far? You can be the master of all Skyrim knowledge.
Gutenberg has said about the books that he took a look at how the game stores the information and storytelling and more often than not "it was in plain text!" So he pasted the book text into separate documents, put in headings, "created a table of contents and a cover, and just like that", you can read everything in Skyrim!"
Now despite the copyright, I think I should give this guy credit where it's due because no one at Bethesda did this and I urge you to head over to Capaneus' website to download a copy of whatever books you want, post-haste!

skyrimbooksI think I might just read up on the history of my people on the train.

Art books, soundtracks and armor sets mark the big gets in the fighter’s newest collector’s edition.
Collector’s editions have been light in the past, with many developers dropping a special DLC code or some other trifle in the box and calling it a day. Not so for Namco, who have just revealed the details of the Soul Calibur V Collector’s Edition package. Fans of the series will find plenty to enjoy in the CE, which hits shelves January 31st.
The collector’s edition comes complete with a soundtrack for the game, an artbook of the characters and environments, and an exclusive behind-the-scenes featurette. Collector’s edition owners will also have the advantage of downloading special armor sets, titled “Dark Knight” and “White Knight” respectively.
What’s really cool about this particular collector’s edition is the design – the box is engineered to resemble an old book, and it opens in the same way a book would to reveal its contents. This, in addition to the recent revelation that Assassin’s Creed’s Ezio would indeed be a playable character in V, make the game even more interesting from the perspective of a wary Soul Calibur player.
I mean, I love the games, but it does feel quite a bit like the same thing over and over again. It would take some serious innovation or a particularly cool collector’s edition to sell me another Soul Calibur, and Namco certainly seems to be on the right track. I’m excited to see how Ezio fares, although his addition may be lights out for some of the cheaper characters in the game.
Are you ready for another Soul Calibur? It doesn’t seem like IV came out all that long ago.

We’re still a month away from Bethesda’s eagerly anticipated RPG, but some industrious gamer has found and leaked the included game manual for all to see.
If there’s one thing people on the internet seem to love doing, it’s leaking things about Skyrim. First, the achievements were leaked, and then someone in Russia gave up the game map. Now, some clever gamer has acquired the manual that comes packaged with the game, and has uploaded it in its full glory.
The game manual is taken from the Xbox 360 version of the game, and covers everything from basic movements to in-depth spell explanations. If you’re trying to avoid Skyrim spoilers, you may want to stop reading here, as the rest of this post discusses information gleaned from the manual.
Fast Travel still exists in Skyrim, and much like Oblivion, time will pass while you travel from one location to the next. You won’t be able to transport from inside or during combat, and you may only use the feature to visit places on the map you’ve already discovered.
You’ll level your skills through repetition (as usual), finding Skill Books, or paying other skilled characters to teach you what they know. The more you level your individual skills, the more times your character levels up, allowing you to add new perks and boost your stamina or magical capabilities.
The manual is massive so if you want a full grasp of everything it covers, it’s probably best for you to check it out here: Skryim Game Manual
In the meantime, we’ll keep our ears to the ground for any other leaks or newsbreaks regarding what is shaping up to be one of the biggest titles of the year despite heavy competition from the Battlefield and Call of Duty franchises.

It’s no secret that Hollywood wants to make a Halo movie, but legal complications have kept it out of development. A new press release indicates some of these restrictions may have been cleared.
We’ve been hearing rumors of a “Halo” movie for years. Every few months, some inside source leaks that so-and-so is writing a script, or some other so-and-so is trying to be brought on as a director. Most of these rumors end with dashed hopes for gamers, as Hollywood has never seemed able to get the project off the ground.
Most of the problem seems to have centered on legal complications between game developers and film studios, but a recent report indicated that DreamWorks, Steven Spielberg’s company, is looking instead to the novels set in the game universe. Apparently, making a movie based on the game is a legal quagmire, and making a movie based on the books based on the game is much more agreeable to everyone involved.
The big tip today comes courtesy of a French press release for a new “Halo” book, titled “Halo: Cryptum.” In addition to briefly discussing the plot of the book, the press release notes that a film project set in the “Halo” universe is currently underway, and DreamWorks and Spielberg are apparently at the helm. The release date, according to the release, is sometime in 2012.
Of course, this wouldn’t be the first time that “Halo” movie rumors bubbled up to the surface only to be dashed by one of the companies involved. If they are making a move based on the books, I’m curious to know what story they’re going to run with. How close can they get to the initial game subject matter without running afoul of the same legal troubles that stopped the game-to-film version? Does making a movie based on the books allow them to skirt the primary issues with other adaptations?
I’m no lawyer, so I’ll just assume everyone knows what they’re doing. Is anyone else excited to see a “Halo” movie, or is Hollywood’s history with video games concerning enough to wish the project a speedy demise?

Nintendo opens their Legend of Zelda lore books, just a crack, to reveal some interesting information about Link’s new adventure. If you’re scared of (very) minor spoilers, this may not be the post for you.
If you absolutely love “The Legend of Zelda” and almost every game in the franchise, then you’re probably pretty stoked about Link’s latest Wii adventure, “Skyward Sword.” Up until now, what we’ve known about the game has been limited to a few key points – it stars Link, there are huge bird/eagle things, there’s lots of flying and (hopefully) a princess and universe in peril. However, thanks to Nintendo, we’ve got a few new details on the early events of the game.
The game immediately drops you into a floating island town (apparently most of the towns are floating islands) called Sky Loft, which we can safely assume is the Kokiri Village/Outset Island of this particular affair. Our green-capped hero, Link, is ready to participate in a flying competition. The prize for victory? Why, a special meeting with the one and only (sort of) Princess Zelda.
You’ll have to face off with Link’s school bully, a grouchy kid by the name of Groose, who will interfere with your aspirations of becoming a world-class bird0-flyer and princess seducer. I’m sure you can guess how that turns out for Groose.
Most importantly, it looks like the early events of the game revolve around the the goddess Fi, who sends Link through a number of quests in order to create the Master Sword – you know, the one sword that has the power to lay evil to rest in all of the other games. And you may even get to finally introduce yourself to Zelda’s dad.
If you want to know more about the game, you’ll just have to pick up Skyward Sword when it drops on November 20. The only thing I really care about is seeing a return of the massive, ice-shattering mace from “Twilight Princess.” Once I found that thing, I basically never put it down.

mfskywardsmallNintendo opens their Legend of Zelda lore books, just a crack, to reveal some interesting information about Link’s new adventure. If you’re scared of (very) minor spoilers, this may not be the post for you.

This tandem is one that's sure to go down into the "Awesome" section of gaming history books. And to think it almost didn't happen!
Capcom confirmed that Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney will be making an appearance at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show event later this week.
According to their schedule, Professor Layton and Phoenix Wright wil be taking the stage as part of the Capcom show on September 16th, from 1:40PM to 2:10PM, Tokyo time.
Since we all can't fly to Tokyo for the TGS and catch this appearance in person, here are the different times you can catch it if you're going to be tuning in via streaming or whatnot: 2:40PM, Sydney; 5:40Am BST; 12:40AM EDT, 9:40PM PDT, September 15th.
Ushering them onto the TGS stage are Capcom's Shu Takumi and Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino. It's expected that the duo will be divulging some more pertinent information about the outing of the professor and the Attorney on the 3DS.
We're keeping our fingers crossed that they will finally say something about a Western release for this game. All we have to hold on to is this old trailer from last year's Tokyo event.
Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney was first confirmed last year. Keiji Inafune of Capcom revealed that time that he thought it would be "impossible" to get these two heavy-hitting franchises together, but we're glad they did make it happen.
