Just a few days after Maxis hinted at a big GDC announcement, it looks like their surprise has been outed.
It’s been a while since we last saw the SimCity franchise. The last game in the series, SimCity Societies, launched in 2007 to mixed reviews. Since then, Maxis has remained mum on whether it would be revisiting the series. Until, of course, last week, when EA hinted that the company had an enormous reveal planned for this year’s Game Developers Conference.
No information was given on what Maxis might have up its sleeve, but most people immediately began to assume that a new SimCity was on the table. And, it turns out, they may have been right.
Thanks to some scanned images from a German magazine, we now have a few details and screenshots/concept art from what could be SimCity 5. The game will take place 20 years after other iterations of the franchise, and will feature more flexible city designs that don’t depend so much on blocks. The game will also feature a new graphics engine and – gasp – multiplayer in the form of global leaderboards.
Here’s some of the shots and concept art, courtesy of NeoGaf:
Are you ready for another SimCity?

An invitation-only reveal at GDC promises to unveil the next generation of game building technology.
Unreal Engine is one of the core building blocks of the games industry. Countless classic titles have been built using one version or another of Epic’s engine, from Batman: Arkham City to Mass Effect 3. And it looks like Epic is ready to unveil the next iteration of its powerful game authoring software—to very specific people.
The company has confirmed that Unreal Engine 4 will be shown at this year’s Game Developers Conference, scheduled to begin March 6 in San Francisco. However, the engine will not be on public display; only a select few individuals will have the privilege of viewing the software in action. Those individuals, mostly partners, customers and prospective customers, will be bound by NDA.
The NDA, apparently, is in effect due to Unreal Engine 4 running on next-gen technologies that can’t be discussed in a public forum. You know, like those top-secret Microsoft and Sony projects that are perhaps less secret that the companies would like to admit.
If you’re a fan of Epic, you’ll still have a chance to interact with the company at GDC. Tim Sweeney, Rod Fergusson and Cliff Bleszinski will be participating in 15 events over the course of the week, all of which are open to any attendee that wishes to participate.
Are you excited to see what Unreal Engine 4 will bring to the table?

EA’s proprietary digital distribution service has banked $100 million since launching in June.
If you search around the web a bit, one thing you’ll find no shortage of is complaints about EA’s Origin service. Missing/vanishing games, indifferent support reps and a myriad of other problems plague the online platform, which is still very young in terms of its developmental cycle.
These troubles don’t seem to have fazed EA much, however. The company confirmed earlier this week that sales through Origin have been quite nice indeed, with the service brining in over $100 million since launching in the summer of 2011. EA is also boasting that the Origin client has been downloaded over nine million times, with a concurrent user peak of one million.
These numbers came alongside an announcement that new games from new publishers would be making their way to Origin – publishers like Remedy Entertainment, Focus Home Interactive, Iceberg Interactive, Macro Games, Legendo Entertainment and Selectsoft.
Of course, it’s hard for gamers not to take this news with a bitter squint, since a large number of Origin installs are the direct result of EA requiring the service on blockbuster games like Battlefield 3. When you force players to buy and play a game through one specific mechanism, you’re naturally going to see it begrudgingly adopted on a large scale.
What do you think of Origin’s numbers? And, how has Origin been treating you?

CEO Mark Pincus disagrees with allegations of concept copying, instead preferring the term “evolution.”
Last week, we talked a bit about Zynga’s latest game, Dream Heights. More specifically, we talked about the fact that Dream Heights is a pretty blatant copy of 2011’s official iPhone Game of the Year, Tiny Tower. At least, that’s how Tiny Tower’s developer, NimbleBit, feels.
Zynga CEO Mark Pincus disagrees with NimbleBit’s assertions, and instead believes that Dream Heights is just the next evolutionary step in a long line of tower games. His response, issued in an internal memo, referenced games like SimTower and Yoot Tower as other games that laid the framework for Tiny Tower, which in turn served as the basis for Dream Heights.
For the sake of fairness, here’s a direct quote:
“With regard to Dream Heights and the tower genre, it’s important to note that this category has existed since 1994 with games like Sim Tower and was more recently popularized in China with Tower of Babel in 2009 which achieved 15 million DAUs. On iOS there has been Yoot Tower, Tower Up, Tower Town, Tower Blocks and Tiny Tower. Just as our games, mechanics and social innovations have inspired and accelerated the game industry, its 30 year body of work has inspired us too.”
Of course, SimTower and Tiny Tower are very different games, a point made by NimbleBit’s Ian Marsh in the company’s rebuttal:
“It is a smart idea for Mark Pincus and Zynga to try and lump all games with the name Tower together as an actual genre whose games borrow from each other. Unfortunately sharing a name or setting does not a genre make. The games Pincus mentions couldn't be more different.”
He continued:
“If you take a quick look before "pulling the lens back" as Pincus suggests, you'll find an innumerable number of details in the game that were painstakingly crafted to be identical to Tiny Tower. These are core gameplay mechanics and rules, not similar settings or themes that games in the same genre might share.”
Pincus also took time to address allegations by yet another developer, Buffalo Studios, that the company had ripped off their design for Bingo Blitz to make the upcoming Zynga Bingo. Pincus wrote a missive similar to the original NimbleBit post, complete with picture-by-picture comparisons of how Buffalo actually ripped off Poker Blitz, an earlier Zynga title.
The whole thing is devolving into a running joke where one company says the other copied, and the accused company goes farther back in the books to claim the same about the accuser. One thing’s for sure, Zynga obviously doesn’t feel like what it is doing is wrong.
What do you think? Where is the line between being inspired by someone’s work, and copying it?
Also, you should absolutely read the full interview at GamesBeat.

EA tries a new method for inspiring players to pick up an Online Pass.
In most games, the Online Pass system blocks certain content from players who haven’t purchased the game new. Whether it’s single-player levels or online multiplayer, if you want the full experience from your used game, you’ll have to invest in an Online Pass – this is how publishers earn a few bucks on the sale of used games.
SSX, due for release on February 28, is trying something a little different. Even without the online pass, you’ll still be able to access every part of the game. What you won’t be able to do, however, is make in-game purchases.
Here’s an explanation:
In SSX you can compete in a game mode called Global Events. As you complete challenges in these events, you’re awarded with credits, which you can then use to purchase new gear for your character. In SSX without an Online Pass, you simply will not be able to spend your credits. However, the credits will continue to amass – as soon as you buy the Online Pass, you’ll have access to everything you’ve earned.
There’s no word on whether you actually need these item upgrades to succeed, but it certainly seems like a better way to do the Online Pass system than blocking players from certain in-game modes. Having the opportunity to play with your friends and build up a nice credit bank will likely do more to inspire you to buy an Online Pass than locking you out completely.
What do you think of the idea?

Does the publisher have a right to used game profits?
We talked last week about the Xbox 720/Loop and the possibility that it may not play used games. The posting, in which I made an argument for Microsoft’s decision, blew up into quite the comment war. Which got me thinking – how exactly do we feel about the used marketplace? Publishers are still making the argument that they deserve a piece of this multi-million dollar market, but are used games any different from used cars or furniture?
Online passes and rumored used-blocking are mechanisms designed to slice revenue away from the used game retailers and put it in the pockets of the publisher. As the industry moves forward, it’s inevitable that we’ll see more ideas of this nature come to the surface. However, the real question that lies beneath this issue is whether publishers have any right to the money earned from used sales.
When you sell a car, for example, you don’t have to write a check to Dodge or Ford for the privilege. Nor does a furniture store get a cut when you dump your old couch on Craigslist. So why should games be any different?
That’s the subject of this week’s Sound Off: Should game publishers profit from the sale of used games?
Sound off!

Players under 18 may only be allowed three hours of game time per day.
You’re probably familiar with South Korea’s gaming shutdown law, which went into effect late last year. The law essentially blocks gamers under 18 from accessing online games during a six-hour block late in the night. The nation’s Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, however, is looking for even steeper measures.
MEST believes that the danger in gaming doesn’t come so much from when kids play as it does from how much time they spend playing. It makes sense when you think about it – what’s worse for your health, ten hours of daytime gaming, or one hour of late night play? With this in mind, the agency is currently reviewing a new program that will limit all minors in the country to only three hours of game time per day, with only two hours being allowed consecutively.
Resistance to the proposed rule has already reared its head, with many critics noting that South Korea is regulating gaming from three separate government agencies. Whatever the concern, South Korea has shown its willingness to interfere in the lives of gamers before, so there’s no telling whether this particular rule will or won’t be implemented.
We’ll keep you updated. In the meantime, do you think the government has a right to tell you when you can play games, and for how long? Is it right to try to protect young gamers from bad habits?

Why Microsoft’s plan to block used games may not be such a bad idea.
Rumors surfaced yesterday, thanks to an insider source, that the next-gen Xbox system currently in development might contain some sort of anti-used game technology. We’re not exactly sure what that means, or how it would be implemented, but the basic gist is that the new Xbox may not play used games at all.
News of this function fired off a massive Internet backlash, with countless commenters railing about how they’d never buy an Xbox 720 (or whatever) if they can’t play used games. And while I certainly agree that limiting your customers’ choices is a very dangerous way to move forward in business, I think that Microsoft may actually be doing the right thing here.
Put aside, for the moment, the arguments against publishers getting cash for used sales. We all know it doesn’t make sense for used games to be treated differently than used cars. The bottom line, however, is that publishers want a slice of that pie, and they’re going to do anything they can to get it. The current solution is the Online Pass, which most gamers would agree is a complete disaster.
Online Passes are engineered to ensure that publishers get a taste of any after-market sale of their games, but mostly serve as enormous headaches to the people that bought the game new. Anyone that had to suffer through Battlefield 3’s ridiculous registration process will know what I mean. And as we move forward, more and more publishers are going to slap Online Passes on their games.
The way I see it, we have two potential used game futures: In the first, every game we buy will have an Online Pass from whatever publisher owns the game, requiring an obnoxious registration code and all the trappings we’ve already encountered. In the second, used games are blocked at the console level, and you purchase your Online Pass directly through Xbox Live or PSN.
Having the console deal with used game access eliminates the need for cumbersome Online Passes, and ensures you have access to Xbox’s support network instead of some random person at whatever publisher happened to make your game. It’s not ideal, but it’s certainly better than what we have at the moment.
I don’t agree with the concept of preventing players from accessing used games, but it’s not like Online Passes are going to fade away. One way or another, we’re paying that money to the publisher – would you rather do it through Xbox Live or a dozen different registration websites?

mfusd1Why Microsoft’s plan to block used games may not be such a bad idea.
