It’s been almost four months since a Call of Duty game came out. Time to start talking about a new one!
Most people agree that the next entry in the Call of Duty franchise will be Black Ops 2. It’s Treyarch’s turn to develop a CoD title, and the original Black Ops broke pretty much every record set by Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare 2. And since Activision isn’t one for originality or risk-taking, a straight sequel is all but guaranteed.
Of course, Activision still likes to pretend like it can keep a secret. So even though Black Ops 2 was outed by a retailer last month and everyone pretty much knows it’s coming, the company has gone out of its way to pretend that isn’t the case. Well, add another retailer leak to the pile.
Spanish retailer Fnac not only has Black Ops 2 in its currently video game roster, but has a release window for the still-unannounced title as well: November 2012. Once again, this is less than news—a new Call of Duty game has come out in October or November of every year since 2003.
Seriously, Activision, just announce the game (and the accompanying Black Ops ELITE paid service) already.

BT Games accidentally a game announcement.
Hey, remember the God of War series? You know, the one that’s made a bazillion dollars but hasn’t been heard from in a while? Well, it turns out that there’s a new God of War coming your way, though you wouldn’t know it by talking to Sony.
Despite the company’s best efforts to keep the title under wraps, everyone pretty much knows that God of War 4 is happening. First, we had an accidental slip of the resume from the composer that worked on the game; now we have BT Games, a South African games store, taking pre-orders for the game despite the fact that it hasn’t been confirmed to exist.
Oops! Apparently, this isn’t the first time BT Games has dropped the bomb on an unannounced games. Anyway, it’s not like the existence of God of War 4 is some sort of huge mystery—anyone that knows the industry would guess that the thing is coming out sooner or later. Still, it’s a pretty big slip-up on the part of the retailer, especially after the Black Ops 2 debacle that unfolded last week.
What do you think about a new God of War?

But it runs on the Frostbite 2.0 engine!
If there’s one thing we learned from 2011, it’s that people will buy pretty much anything as long as it’s a first-person shooter. And since DICE isn’t likely to release another Battlefield title this year, somebody is going to have to stand up and take a (very small) bite out of Black Ops 2. That somebody appears to be Danger Close, and their strategy appears to be Medal of Honor.
The next Medal of Honor, subtitled Warfighter (creative), will hit shelves in October. The game is being built with DICE’s Frostbite 2.0 game engine—the very same one that powers the exceptionally pretty Battlefield 3. DICE, however, will not be involved in development; Danger Close has elected to build the entire game in-studio.
EA is planning to drop more details on the game at GDC in a couple of weeks. For now, we’ll just have to be satisfied with the promise of yet another brownish FPS.
Stay tuned for more updates, and in the meantime—do you prefer Medal of Honor over CoD or Battlefield?

If you’re terrified that your Kinect is beaming your sensitive habits into space, Paul Harper has just the device for you.
Microsoft’s Kinect device is capable of reading human movements, understanding 3D space and a whole host of other cool things (as evidenced by the modding community). It’s also, apparently, quite handy as a clandestine advertising tool.
Dennis Durkin, vice president of Microsoft’s gaming division, noted a couple of years back that the Kinect could potentially be used to gather information for advertisers. For example, the device could read recognizable product logos in your home and use that data to put together a tailored ad package based on your habits.
It’s pretty intrusive stuff, and even if Microsoft hasn’t taken advantage of the technology yet, there’s always the possibility they could. Which is why Paul Harper has invented the Pritect. It’s not particularly advanced—just a black cover you slip over your Kinect when you’re not using it to bust moves. The cover stops the device from pulling data, and protects it from dust buildup.
If you’re the type of person that’s concerned over Microsoft tracking your out-of-game habits, you can pick up a Pritect for $14.99.
Alternatively, you could stop acting crazy.

Call of Duty locking DLC to ELite accounts
More Elite features include flipping the bird to consumers and making tonnes off money by being crazy
So Modern Warfare 3 made over a billion dollars last year and whilst Activision is tight lipped on how much has been made from their Elite service so far. The first two maps for MW3 have been released and the next few already teased but many CoD players have discovered a recent change in the DLC policy. This would have people shelling out more money for their maps but other profiles on the system will be unable to get their content without a second or separate Elite membership.
On the Call of Duty forums, there were 8 pages worth on a single thread of upset players who had their friends and family accounts discontinued or altered with no new maps because they didn't have a secondary account. What's even worse is that the new policy doesn't really work with the terms of services you encounter when you first download the content, which rather plainly states on the loading screen that: "You can use this item on the first Xbox 360 console you downloaded it to. Access to this item will also be granted to all users on this first console."
What would usually happen is that DLC on the 360 would be user agnostic and while your purchase (or any redownloads of purchased items) would be tied to your account, any XBLA games or in-game DLC would be on your HD and playable by any account on the 360, which you own. Microsoft's own digital ownership scheme, mimics real life ownership, so as long as someone has access to the content, you can let someone borrow it from you and play it on their own account.
However, with the CoD Elite service, you cannot do so and require your own user account to access the maps and DLC. For example, a single copy of the game could set you back several $50 a year per account to play on.
Whilst Activision is yet to make a comment on it, I'm sure the more "financially savvy" (See: Greedy) companies will probably adopt this system to make sure each user or member of a console will fork out a piece of dough to make sure they make up for the "lost millions" from pirates.
Not sure how many Call of Duty fans there are on this site, but I'm sure that more often than not there are criticism's spread far and wide about their handling of their Elite service as well as their user base. I do like Call of Duty in theory and in some aspects.
I think if the Black Ops zombie game was just a downloadable title I would buy that and every bit of DLC in existance, but alas we are burdened by terrible storylines, unrelatable characters and some insane visuals. They're not terrible games but their effect on the industry (see: BF3, Medal of Honor, etc.) can bar none see them as a culprit.

Epic Games’ sequel to the best-looking games on mobile devices has an official release date, and it may be sooner than you think.
Infinity Blade was a revelation for the mobile games industry. Using the Unreal Engine, Epic Games was able to create a lush, engaging experience for iPhone and iPad users across the globe. It was a nice change from the simple, gimmicky games that plague the iTunes Store, and went on to be quite a success.
Now, Infinity Blade II lurks just over the horizon, and promises to be even better than the original.
Epic has just announced that Infinity Blade II will hit digital shelves on December 1, 2011. If you have an iPad, iPad 2, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 3GS or iPod Touch, you’ll be able to download and play the game – though only 4S and iPad 2 users will be able to play it at its full capacity.
The game promises to be more of the same in terms of play style, just much, much prettier. Epic has put tons of work into displaying the potential of mobile devices, so expect Infinity Blade II to create a new graphics benchmark on release. If you liked the original game, which you can still buy for $5.99, you’ll probably enjoy the sequel.
Do you think mobile gaming will ever hit a point at which it is on par with consoles and PCs?

The first-person shooter juggernaut simply can’t be stopped, earning almost a billion dollars in its first few days of launch.
We knew that Modern Warfare was big. Activision confirmed last week that the Call of Duty franchise has now made more money than Star Wars or Lord of the Rings, and the first-day totals for MW3 were nothing but staggering. And the game just keeps on going.
In a press release issued by Activision early this morning, the company confirmed that the game has made a ridiculous $775 million since launching on November 8th. The game is simply rocketing into the stratosphere.
The game absolutely demolished the week one record for 2010’s Black Ops, which still amassed an impressive $550 million. Call of Duty is enormous, taking up the number one, number two, and number four slots on the Xbox Live play charts (Battlefield 3 is number three).
The game set two new records on Xbox Live, in fact:
• 7 million hours of playtime logged by players over the weekend.
• 2.2 unique accounts logged in to play
• 3.3 players on at the same time
Congratulations to Activision on their success. I’m a Battlefield guy, but when you make a game people love there’s nothing more to do than say “Nice work” and move along.
Do you think the Call of Duty franchise can maintain this breakneck pace into next year’s release?

PayDay The Heist
I've talked before about bias and I feel like I have to clarify that despite my interview last week, I feel like a good game developer should listen to fans who speak clearly and with clarity. I hope they read the review in hope that their next game, hopefully another PayDay, will be better and that Overkill will be pleased with this honest review.
The game of PayDay The Heist, is not a simple game, 'tis a complex head blend of working together and patience. Seeing a fallen team mate will make your heart pound more, especially when playing with friends, but the second you see that cash, it may be too late for your friend and even later for those around you. Okay, PayDay is a simple game of four guys who steal money and that is all I can say about the plot. To be honest, there is no plot, but who cares, let's steal some money.
The game's mix of Left 4 Dead's comradery and Kane and Lynch's love of heists, brings Overkill Software's PayDay The Heist to a place I'd hoped a co-op game would come to eventually - a game of fun and eventually, betrayal. The game is set between a series of distinct, but fairly similar, scenarios in which you have to run and gun as you make your way to a fairly large sum of money.
This sum is arbirtrary int the world of the game, but does provide a good upgrade system as you earn "reputation", to go along with it, you better enjoy the game or at least the premise. Whilst there was some speculation from the game's "every game is different" I'm somewhat happy to report that this is more or less true. It's true in that no game I've played, even on the same level, has had the same scenario, except for a few instances of SWAT teams invading at particular times and the amount of time it may take you to drill through a gate or burn through to a vault.
The less, is the amount of fun you will get from the game, you will have levels you won't like, players you won't like and scenarios which will be frustrating. The game does not have a sophisticated AI Director, a lá L4D, but it does have a good sense of direction when it comes to helping you play through a scenario. There is often an even amount of ammo on the ground or good place to take cover, but more or less if your buddies aren't around the director will screw you over and you may have to let go a hostage just so you can play, some time later.
There are a few arbitrary or minor issues, mainly graphical and audio ones, first and foremost the fact that when I look outside on some of the maps, the SWAT and police members will become glitchy ghosts that are just waiting to enter the nether worlds of the heist, a bit ironic considering what me and my heist-mates are about to do. There are a lot of glitches that could be easily fixed, such as Team AI, such as in Heat Street or Panic Room.
They will sometimes go through the props in the level and it really throws you out of the experience, as does the fact that the buzz saws on the Panic Room level doesn't really cut and the drill in the other levels don't drill. It'd be a simple animation, unlike the running. I wasn't sure if it was my internet cocking up or the game just had a weird animation. Turned out to be the later. It's a bit weird, especially when characters are crouching.
I do have to say the game is quite gory, especially when you shoot up close or get a good headshot (which is rewarded, in-game) Other than that, the game looks pretty good, Overkill, not stunning, but enough to make you enjoy it more than Kane and Lynch 2 but less than Portal 2. The game looks good on the modded Diesel engine, let's just leave it at that.
How it sounds is amazing. I do have one gripe that the fact the Heisters don't have more than a few catchphrases, even when you're telling the hostages to "get down" "get down" "get down", you think they were about to start a DJ set, not a heist. It's a small problem but it's always something that's really gotten me down, especially after other games such as Uncharted, The Simpsons Game and SWAT 4, have all had good simple voice acting gigs and rarely have a repeated line, hell, hire me for $10 an hour and I'll record whatever the heck you want. That being said, some of their dialogue is amusing, not on the level of the castmates of L4D or their sequel, but still a wry smile forms between getting shot at and restarting saws/drills.
Sound effects, which is quite different from the voices, are absolutely fantastic. In my interview last week with Simon Viklund he stated his favourite sound effect was the shotgun and I could not agree more. Having it unlocked as you go into the game is a sight for sore eyes as the world seems to go a lot better (depending on your level and experience, of course)  but having that fire into a bulldozer is more than satisfying as you continue through your heist. The music is always rarring for me to get into the game. The perfect music starts off the game, it reminds me of the opening of The Dark Knight and as it flashes up the face masks of our heistmates, you are ready, you just are.
Wolf's frightening bloodied mask, Dallas' patriotic smile, Hoxton's red eyebrows and Chains cross eyes are fairly distinct as well and all provide a great opening to the game, but the menus and a few visual cues leave a lot to be desired. A lot could have made the game look really flashy and interesting but a simple pallette of black, yellow and grey makes it look as if the game is ready to be taped up behind Police Lines
Finally, the gameplay. The game is broken up into six different levels. First World Bank, a traditional bank heist, Heat Street, a plan gone wrong, chase'em down, Panic Room, a break in, break it out mission, Green Bridge, shooting in the rain...I'm just shooting in the rain, Diamond Heist, a sneak in smash and grab and finaally, Slaughterhouse...is exactly what it sounds like.
To focus on the more difficult and interesting levels, Green Bridge is the most exciting, being in the rain, breaking over prison convoys, donned in yellow raincoats and escorting a chinese prisoner. Things just escalate, even when you start on a half-exploded bridge. The level is fun and exciting and atmospheric at it's core. The most fun is probably Panic Room, simply due to how cool you can act before the heist starts and
Diamond Heist is quite difficult and starts off sneaking, but if someone's being an asshat, this plan can and will go awry in a matter of minutes. This one is best to be kept in the shadows. Sure, cops will be alerted eventually, but planning and timing your moves to silently take out the security guards is a wonderful sense of fun and comradery I wouldn't change for the world.
Slaughterhouse is just chaos. Starts off with a "The Usual Suspects" scenario as a bunch of trucks pull up outside a warehouse and you have to take them out and kill a lot of people while you take some money out of Secure Van.  Gold everywhere and bulldozers stormed during the last few minutes after the Gold came out and it was insane.
The Single Player mode is fairly useless as are the AI from time to time and when you can turn the AI on for not having enough players in the online mode, what difference would it make? Why wouldn't you play online? This game could've done better with co-op and a better matchmaking system as well. The difficult system alone is quite confusing, not that they're confusing in general, but it's enough to question a thing or two.
For example, the last two modes (Slaughter and Diamond)  are available on the hardest setting, and I do have to question why. The levels themselves are as complex as Panic Room and require less in-game set pieces.  It boggles the mind on why they're specifically hard, possibly a question I should put to Simon, next time I talk to him.
PayDay The Heist is a great game, it has great play but could have been better. There is so much here that could have been even a great storyline, but Overkill has made a decision to make it for hard and fast gamers. Varying difficulty levels, great upgrade system and some fairly intriguing level design, makes this a must-have PSN title.
Harrison HAS  E. is in jail from pulling an EB Games heist. He's serving hard time for Grand Theft GTA.

paydayheist2PayDay The Heist has made it's way to Europe on Steam and PSN and Harrison E. has decided to steal some words and give the heist-sim a whirl.

The latest game in the Elder Scrolls franchise is a certifiable hit, but not everyone that picked up the game is completely satisfied.
We all knew that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was going to be a big deal, but initial sales numbers have far outstripped expert predictions. In the first two days of the games launch, it landed an impressive 3.5 million copies sold – not counting Steam sales. That lands the game in Battlefield 3 territory, though not quite at MW3 levels.
For reference, the last game in the franchise opened with 490,000 sales. That’s quite a bounce from one game to the next.
The launch hasn’t been without issue though, and Xbox, PS3 and PC owners have all reported a myriad of strange and annoying bugs. The Xbox 360 is having issues reading saved textures, PS3 systems aren’t streaming textures correctly and PC systems are reporting random freezes and crashes.
It wouldn’t be a Bethesda game without a few bugs, and the company is aware of the issues. In fact, they’re more than aware, as evidenced by this hilarious tweet form Pet Hines, Bethesda’s VP of PR:
“Patches/updates take a little time. We can't turn it around quite that fast. It's been three days. Calm down. We're working on it.”
Also this:
“We will fix as much as we can for your platform. I don't know if it will fix "your" bug. Takes a while to test/fix/regress. Hang in there.”
Honestly, people do need to calm down. Bethesda delivered a 300-hour epic; it’s not surprising that it has a few issues. They’re working on it and that’s pretty much all they can do, so if you’re experiencing issues in Skyrim, rest assured that Bethesda is on the ball.
In the meantime, how awesome is that horse?!

The game has no fewer than three launch-day DLC packs, but one of them is an affront to gamers everywhere.
Launch-day DLC is quickly becoming the norm. We’ve seen skins and extra content packaged into a game as day-one downloadables, and while the whole thing does feel sort of shady it has for the most part been okay to deal with – certainly nothing that seems like a purposefully released half-game with ten DLC packs to fill in the gaps. I wouldn’t say any developer has really screwed gamers over with day-one DLC. Until now, that is.
Here’s the deal: THQ is offering three day-one DLC packs to gamers that pick up Saints Row: The Third. And while one is a relatively stupid weapon that shoots fish guts and another is a season pass, it’s the third option that has really caught my attention. Titled the “Invincible Pack,” this downloadable content pack contains a number of cheat codes for the game including invincibility, super explosions, better ammo usage and a couple of other things.
What the hell happened to video games? Sure, old-school cheat codes have been slowly fading away, but have we really hit a point where developers can sell us something that by all means should be included in the basic title? The main issue, at least for me, is that codes require little to no development time. It’s not a new weapon, vehicle, or area to explore. It just changes the way your game plays. I don’t have an issue buying DLC when it’s obvious that the developer put some work into it, but this is just greedy and lazy.
Paying for cheat codes is absolutely ridiculous. Either they’re in the game, or they aren’t. THQ should be ashamed of itself for such a disgusting cash grab at the expense of people that really love its games.
That’s my opinion, at least. What do you think about DLC cheats?

It’s the end of an era as a game besides Angry Birds finally sits at the top if the iPhone heap. And, it’s Scribblenauts!
Angry Birds may have over 500 million downloads, but it couldn’t possibly hold the top sales slot forever. Today it looks like the game’s time has finally come, with the App Store chart reporting that Scribblenauts Remix has officially taken the number one position.
For those keeping score, the current top three are Scribblenauts Remix, Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja.
The iOS version of Scribblenauts brings levels from both the original game and it only sequel so far, Super Scribblenauts. 5th Cell also added ten new levels to the game to keep it interesting for old players trying out new devices.
Speaking as someone that downloaded Scribblenauts Remix onto my iPad, I can say that the game was practically made for the device. I’m sure it feels equally natural on the iPhone. It’s nice to see an awesome game getting a little love; I think we were all a little tired of Angry Birds steamrolling everything. But, there’s no indicator of how long this pop may last.
Did you pick up Scribblenauts Remix? What did you think?

Ten years ago, Microsoft took a chance by stepping into a market with zero credibility. It seems to have worked out.
On November 15, 2001, Microsoft’s Xbox console launched into a market dominated by the PlayStation 2 and captivated by the brand new GameCube. It’s easy to forget this now, but when Microsoft first started talking about developing a console, many industry insiders simply believed it couldn’t be done. There were plenty of people that predicted the Xbox would flop, and that Microsoft would end up taking heavy losses on the experiment.
Ten years later and we all know the story. Fueled by a selection of excellent launch titles (including the now-legendary Halo: Combat Evolved), the Xbox quickly raised its market share until it became a true force to be reckoned with. Xbox also brought us the first true connectivity for consoles through Xbox Live, which has matured into by far the best online service consoles currently have to offer.
The original Xbox was a monstrosity with controllers that felt like bricks, but there was something special about sitting down in front of the new system and catching a few rounds of Halo or Dead or Alive 3. With Microsoft’s powerful media engine behind it, Xbox has become synonymous with gaming and now sits among the three primary competitors for sales superiority.
There have been a few hits and misses along the way, but I think we as gamers can acknowledge the incredible impact the Xbox had on the industry, mostly for the positive. So happy birthday, Xbox. Thanks for all the great games.
What is your favorite original Xbox memory?

The service, described by Activision as a “necessity” for future games, might be dead in the water for PC gamers.
Once upon a time, there was a company called Activision. This company, led by the shrewd but effective Bobby Kotick, practically reinvented the way games are developed, turning franchise studios into the equivalent of a car assembly line. Of course, Activision is always looking for ways to innovate (or, according to some gamers, squeeze a few more bucks out of customers), and their most recent idea came in the form of Call of Duty Elite.
Elite was intended to be a way to track your stats, interact with other players, and generally broaden your Call of Duty experience. Think of it like a new version of Bungie’s old stats tracker for Halo, or a slightly different version of Battlefield 3’s Battlelog. Elite came in two forms – free and premium, with premium subscribers also landing all future DLC and a couple of other perks.
But there was one problem with CoD Elite; mainly that Beachhead (the company behind the service) couldn’t get it to work for PC systems. When Modern Warfare 3 launched last week, we were told that Elite would be delayed for PC gamers due to concerns over stats rigging. Now, it looks like CoD fans may not see the service at all.
The official Call of Duty Elite Twitter page today posted a cryptic note indicating that while they’re working hard on Elite for PCs, they can’t guarantee “if or when” it will actually come around. That’s a pretty big “if,” considering how hard Activision pushed Elite as the future of gaming. This is just more bad news for the service, which has been plagued with issues since launching on consoles.
On the plus side, if you purchased Elite, at least you still get your DLC. Elite was a big chunk of the MW3 marketing blitz, so it’s unlikely they’ll completely scrap it. But PC owners may end up with a more limited version.
What do you think of Call of Duty Elite?
