Skyrim Sells 3.4 Million, but Technical Problems Persist

The latest game in the Elder Scrolls franchise is a certifiable hit, but not everyone that picked up the game is completely satisfied.

We all knew that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was going to be a big deal, but initial sales numbers have far outstripped expert predictions. In the first two days of the games launch, it landed an impressive 3.5 million copies sold – not counting Steam sales. That lands the game in Battlefield 3 territory, though not quite at MW3 levels.

For reference, the last game in the franchise opened with 490,000 sales. That’s quite a bounce from one game to the next.

The launch hasn’t been without issue though, and Xbox, PS3 and PC owners have all reported a myriad of strange and annoying bugs. The Xbox 360 is having issues reading saved textures, PS3 systems aren’t streaming textures correctly and PC systems are reporting random freezes and crashes.

It wouldn’t be a Bethesda game without a few bugs, and the company is aware of the issues. In fact, they’re more than aware, as evidenced by this hilarious tweet form Pet Hines, Bethesda’s VP of PR:

“Patches/updates take a little time. We can't turn it around quite that fast. It's been three days. Calm down. We're working on it.”

Also this:

“We will fix as much as we can for your platform. I don't know if it will fix "your" bug. Takes a while to test/fix/regress. Hang in there.”

Honestly, people do need to calm down. Bethesda delivered a 300-hour epic; it’s not surprising that it has a few issues. They’re working on it and that’s pretty much all they can do, so if you’re experiencing issues in Skyrim, rest assured that Bethesda is on the ball.

In the meantime, how awesome is that horse?!

Automatic updates confirmed for Modern Warfare 3

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is going so modern that even the updates of its assets are going to be automatically made.

This was confirmed by Robert Bowling of Infinity Ward, saying "So now we're advancing content and releasing new maps on multiplayer, we can also further tweak them to also be playale in Spec Ops, and then looka thow we can update the game further in other ways like new modes, weapons - whatever we wanna do."

He furthered, "So we've done a lot of work on the back end that allows us to update more easily and quickly, and that's helpful for DLC but it's also helpful for post-launch support: listening to feedback. Maybe there's stuff we want to rebalance. Maybe there's stuff we wanna patch. We have a lot more control in tweaking the game now, outside of a patch, than we ever did before.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is in tight competition with EA DICE's Battlefield 3, and is set to come out on November 8th of this year. The Hardened Edition is also up now for pre-order, so you might want to check that out too. Whatever you decide to get, though, the devs are promising to provide "intense moments" and the "deepest experience" with Modern Warfare 3.

New Console updates out for CoD: Black Ops

Treyarch is pretty busy releasing updates for Call of Duty: Black Ops. A couple of days back, they just released version 1.09 for the PC, and today, it's the consoles' turn to get upgraded.

The patch, otherwise known as Version 60.2.2.13, is now available for both the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game, and targets server issues, particularly, that of improving stability and matchmaking.

This update will be downloaded automatically upon logging in to your next session of Black Ops. As to the specifics of the patch, Treyarch is yet to release their official word on it.

If you do log in right now and does not find the said update, there's no need to worry. We hear that it might take some time to get the green light in certain regions, but it's definitely coming your way.

Treyarch: Bug-proof game exits in an ideal world

In an ideal world, there would be no wars. There would be no poverty, famine, ecological disasters that take lives of millions of people. There would also be no crime, and there would be no bugs in games. Unfortunately, we don't live in an ideal world, and so we have all of these and more. Yes, even the bugs in the games.

Treyarch's community manager Josh Olin recently spoke with Videogamer armed with this matter of fact. "It is unfortunate that those [bugs] have to exist at all," he said.

In an ideal world, we would love to ship a completely bug-proof game. I can't think of a single developer in the world, though, that could achieve that."

Treyarch, of course, is the developer of the highly-acclaimed CoD: Black Ops. However, even an AAA title like Black Ops is not immune from those pesky bugs. The PS3 version, for one, has been so rife with them, that offers for a trade-in have even surfaced for the game.

Olin, for his part, has been very busy attempting to appease the fans at the forums, explaining their patch process, so that the fans may be enlightened why despite the numerous patches they've sent out thus far, players are still experiencing problems with the game.

Simply put, all Olin wanted to say in the interview was that Treyarch has got their hands full trying to please everybody. To put that thought into perspective, "just a single hour of gampeplay" from online gamers are so massive that it's way much more than the dev team "could put into quality assurance in a lifetime."

Add to that the issue of gamers getting very creative with the bugs, doing things they "could never predict or think of" and you've got a dev team being way over their heads.

So really, as you can see, the job of the devs don't stop upon the release of the game. In fact, they're just getting started. Some of you might think that it's too much for you to cut them some slack. After all, for your part, you're the consumer buying their product, and you shouldn't expect anything less from your purchase.

Had we lived in an ideal world, we wouldn't even have a concept of game bugs. But as we don't, they're here to bug us all for all eternity, I guess.
