Tired of hearing about how great a game is despite the fact you hated it? Let’s dish.
Over the course of gaming’s history, there have been a few titles that earned massive critical acclaim. Ocarina of Time, BioShock, Portal 2 – all games that the critic and fan communities embraced with open arms. But just because everyone else loved a particular game doesn’t mean you did.
So this week’s Sound Off is your opportunity to let the world know how you feel. Take a shot at that untouchable game. Let us know why it was overrated, or why it left you unimpressed. All games are on the table here, no matter how hallowed they may be.
I’ll go first – I hated BioShock. While I thought the story was compelling, the actual game was repetitive, boring and sloppy. I felt like the lame mechanics got a big pass from gamers because of the impeccable environmental design, and that the game landed far higher scores than it should have. It is, in my opinion, one of the most overrated games of all time. That’s not to say it wasn’t good; it just wasn’t great.
What about you? What’s your most overrated game? Sound off!

Religious song not removed or changed in Bioshock Infinite Trailer
Apparently the word Lord has been thrown about and now some religious groups are not happy.
The game of Bioshock Infinite, if like it's predecessors, will touch on American Values taken to a new limit. The previous games have often tested the line between sanity and chaos when it comes to beliefs, both religious and scientific. The game's most recent trailer caused an uproar when the lyrics to a song contained the word "Lord" and was deemed blasphemous. Will the Circle be Unbroken, sung by Courtnee Draper, the voice actress who plays Elizabeth in the game.
People got confused from the original track and this cover version , which does not contain Lord. The original lyrics from Ada R. Habershon written in 1907, does contain the word in the chorus, however, the song's lyrics were changed in 1912 and more versions and covers were changed by and by, through the years. Great artist's such as Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash have covered the song and changed it too...
Irrational Games, Ken Levine confirmed this via Twitter saying that the word "Lord does not" feature in their new trailer. This is quite a different religious uproar from the removal of a song from the Little Big Planet soundtrack which contained an Islamic verse. It's strange what religious people will and won't allow in their video games, aren't they too busy playing Left Behind?

Infinity Ward is issuing perma-bans that aren’t exactly permanent, but might as well be.
Want to get banned from Modern Warfare 3 for the next 13 years? All you need to do is skirt the rules of the game by hacking, power leveling or performing some other stupid task, then get caught. Infinity Ward is issuing permanent bans to players caught breaking the rules, although the bans may not be as permanent as one might think.
While the message players receive indicates that the suspension is only temporary, the timeframe is pretty amazing – 5,000 days. That means, assuming the suspension isn’t extended, your account won’t come back online until 2024. By then, we’ll be up to Modern Warfare 25.
If you receive this message, it means you’re banned, not suspended. Apparently, Infinity Ward doesn’t have a mechanism in place for applying permanent bans, so they’ve gone with the next best thing – suspending your account until the game has long been made irrelevant.
Robert Bowling, creative strategist for the Modern Warfare brand, confirmed that if you see this message, you did something very, very stupid. So play by the rules, and avoid the perma-ban!

Faced with a rapidly dwindling online population, NCSoft tries something drastic to save its gorgeous but misunderstood MMO.
Remember when everyone was saying that Aion would be the game that killed WoW? It’s been a couple of years since Aion hit shelves, and I think we know the results of that “battle” – WoW continued to not care about any other game, and Aion has seen subscriptions steadily dry up as players move on to greener pastures.
In Europe, NCSoft is trying something new in the hopes of preserving Aion and its play quality – the free to play model. Their strategy is based primarily on bringing new players into the game, and hoping old players will return now that there are no monthly fees to worry about. Paid subscriptions will still be available and will offer certain perks to players, but there aren’t many details on what exactly those perks will be.
In the meantime, the company has confirmed that every quest, class, and feature of Aion will be available to free players, with some minor restrictions to protect the game against botters and spammers. There’s no word on whether the F2P model will make its way to the States – right now this is strictly a Europe experiment.
In the meantime, if you play Aion and want to switch to the F2P model, you can do that from your NCSoft account.
Do you know anyone that plays Aion? Are you more likely to play now that the game is free?

Remember when Nintendo promised you some free games? Well, they’re officially on the way.
If you’re unfamiliar with the Nintendo 3DS Ambassador program, here’s some backstory: First, the Nintendo DS was released to the general public for the astounding price of eight million U.S. gold bars. After a couple of months of terrible sales, Nintendo opted to drop the price to a much more agreeable $169.99. And, to help soothe the minds of those that purchase the handheld at the original price point, the company promised to give every early-adopter ten free Game Boy Advance games.
The release of those games was delayed a couple of times while Nintendo got everything figured out, but they’ve officially announced a real-life release date as well as a list of the games to be released. Look for your Ambassador titles on December 16 – if you live in Japan or Europe. There has been no confirmation from Nintendo’s North American branch quite yet, but it’s safe to assume the games will launch on the same day unless we’re told otherwise.
Here are the ten games you can pick up on Friday:
• F-Zero
• Super Mario Advance 3
• The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap
• Fire Emblem Seima no Kouseki
• Kirby & the Amazing Mirror
• Mario Kart Advance
• Mario vs. Donkey Kong
• Metroid Fusion
• Wario Land Advance
• Made in Wario
Pretty good titles, if you ask me. They could have given us ten terrible games, but instead seem to have dropped a “greatest hits” GBA list. Nice work, Nintendo.
Are you in the Ambassador program? Was it worth the extra cash?

The online gaming behemoth earns a huge pile of cash from its initial stock offering, but its value is already sliding down.
Initial public stock offerings, or IPOs, are usually a good indicator of how valuable a certain company is. When the IPO goes well, it shows that investors have confidence in the company and in its future profitability. When it goes poorly, it indicates that the company has a long way to go before earning the trust of potential shareholders.
Nexon, the Korea-based online gaming company responsible for the enormously successful MapleStory and Mabinogi, made the jump to public stock earlier this week. The company, which claims 1.2 billion registered players, has a bright financial future and a demonstrated record of keeping players around for months at a time, leading to a massive $1.17 billion haul as investors rushed to pick up stock.
Nexon’s IPO ended up being the largest to hit the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 2011, and thanks to this huge success, the company is now riding high with an estimated valuation of between $7.69 billion and $8.97 billion. Of course, it wasn’t all roses and champagne – Nexon’s stock dropped by around 4 percent on its first day of open trading.
Nexon is probably a strong buy for the short term, but freemium companies have yet to demonstrate they can stay competitive over longer periods of time. One need only look to Zynga for an example of that principle in action. Then again, Nexon’s entrenched user base and attention to its community certainly put it in a strong position.
Do you play any Nexon games?

Remedy confirms rumors that the spooky, flashlight-y game will be making its way to Steam sometime next year.
Earlier this week, the internet exploded with speculation regarding an Alan Wake PC port, thanks largely to a few savvy gamers turning up evidence of the game in Steam’s registry files. I’m not sure who these people are or how they think to do things like this, but I’m glad they exists. Anyway, now that the files are out in the open, Remedy has gone ahead and confirmed that Alan Wake will indeed see a PC release in 2012.
As Alan Wake rolled closer to its original, Xbox-only release date, the game’s developers explained that they had considered a PC version of the game, but scrapped it. They did, however, mention that they’d like to get one done eventually, and as of today, it looks like they’re officially on the job.
This is a curious development when you consider Microsoft basically stomped on similar rumors, stating that the Xbox 360 gave Alan Wake the most “compelling” experience possible. What we do know, so far, is that the PC version of Alan Wake will include both The Signal and The Writer DLC expansions and will probably be released through Steam.
Stay tuned for more information. Remedy has given only the loose release window of “early 2012.”
Are you excited for Alan Wake on PC, or is it too little, too late?

Rocksteady has addressed the DX11 issue that made the game unplayable on PC, but only for some players.
Poor Arkham City. It’s had a rough run in recent months – despite launching to rave reviews, the game has been marred by technical difficulties, especially when it comes to the PC. We reported a couple of weeks ago that Arkham City wasn’t necessarily working correctly with DX11, and at the time Rocksteady’s solution basically boiled down to “turn off DX11.”
But, thanks to Steam, we can now see that Arkham City has been patched by its developers, and that the DX11 issue should be mostly resolved – assuming you play on a 64-bit system. If your computer runs on a 32-bit version of Windows 7 or Vista, you’re still going to need to use DX9 until Rocksteady can get the next patch out.
Here are the patch notes, courtesy of PC Gamer:
Performance / hitching issues have been greatly improved for running in DX 11.
An issue with players running out of Video Memory or encountering a Rendering Thread Exceptions has been address. This was primarily affecting 32-bit Operating Systems.
A progression block after defeating Ra’s Al Ghul has been fixed. This was issue occurred primarily on lower end computer setups and described as Batman not readying his Reverse Batarang.
A crash that occurred when scrolling between the Character Bios and Arkham City Stories has been fixed.
A crash that occurred when selecting “Press Start” immediately when available at the Title Screen has been fixed. The issue was described as crashing/hard locking around the DLC (Downloadable Content) check.
Have you downloaded the patch yet? How’s it working out for you?

Talk of a special PlayStation Move accessory for BioShock Infinite is nothing more than rampant speculation, according to the game’s developer.
Yesterday, rumors started flying around that the PlayStation 3 version of BioShock Infinite would have one thing the Xbox 360 version did not: a customized Move peripheral. The rumor came from the last few sentences of a press release on the official PlayStation website, which stated “a special” Move device was in development specifically for the 2012 title.
Unfortunately, 2K Games has quickly spoken out on the rumors being false. Speaking to CVG, they confirmed that there are no special devices in development. BioShock Infinite will still support PS Move technology, just don’t look for anything that’s custom-tailored to the game. The press release has already been removed from the site, so it’s likely some intern just got in a heap of trouble.
We’re still months away from concrete information on Infinite, as 2K Games has played the title pretty close to the chest. All we know is that it takes place on a city in the sky, and that players will have a new companion with which to explore. What’s particular strange about this rumor is that it stated on an official PlayStation website and not through the speculation of a few fans.
So, perhaps there actually was something in development that got scrapped. Or, perhaps there’s still something in development, but it’s a secret. And finally, perhaps there’s just nothing in development and the site screwed up.
Which do you think is more likely?

Earlier in the week, we found out that Bioware’s latest sci-fi RPG would be getting a pre-release demo. Now we have some more info for players that can’t wait to catch up with Commander Shepard and his/her crew.
Mass Effect 3 is easily one of the most anticipated titles of 2012. The first two games were both enormous successes for Bioware and EA, and even if you weren’t stoked on the changes made in Mass Effect 2, it’s still hard to spot a better sci-fi RPG. If you just can’t wait until March to get your hands on Mass Effect 3, you can jump into the pre-release demo starting in January.
The Mass Effect demo will include both single and multiplayer game features, but here’s the catch – in order to qualify for the early access demo, you’ll need to register an online pass from Battlefield 3. This won’t be a problem for the million or so people that have already pre-ordered BF3 and are stoked on playing, but some of those Call of Duty MW3 fans may be upset at the news. It does look like there will be an alternative method for getting in, but it’s not clear quite yet.
Here’s the full post, straight from the Bioware forums:
What are the details of the Mass Effect 3 pre-release demo?
•The Mass Effect 3 pre-release demo will launch in January 2012 (exact date TBA).
•The demo will include both single-player and multi-player sections.
•The demo will be released in all regions where the game is
How can I get early access to the multi-player portion of the Mass Effect 3 demo coming in January 2012?
•Owners of Battlefield 3, on any platform, who activate their Online Pass will automatically be granted early access to the multiplayer portion of the Mass Effect 3 demo. There is no need to enter any other codes, the early access will be applied to the EA Account associated with the Online Pass. Note: BF3 Origin Customers automatically have the BF3 Online Pass.
•This applies to all regions where the demo is released (to be announced)
•The exact date of the demo launch will be announced in late November
•There will be another program whereby players and fans of the Mass Effect franchise can unlock this early access (with no purchase necessary) – this will also be announced in late November or early December.
•There will also be a tool posted on www.masseffect.com allowing players to check if their EA account has been granted the early access.
•The length of the early access period is TBA.
•The single-player section of the demo will be available to all players on day one of the demo launch.
2012 is shaping up to be a massive year for gaming. Mass Effect 3, StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm, BioShock Infinite, Soul Calibur 5 and Final Fantasy XIII-2 are all headed our way in a relatively short period of time, so you’d better finish up your 2011 games fast (Skyrim!).
Are you excited about Mass Effect 3? Will you play the demo, or wait for the full release?
