VVVVVV and Bionic Commando Now on eShop

Two excellent platformers hit the Nintendo 3DS, just in time for your New Year’s hangover.

The week between Christmas and New Year’s is a sort of gaming dead zone, with very few new titles hitting shelves and most gamers busy working on the titles they received over the holiday. But Nintendo is committed to keeping its weekly eShop release schedule, and actually dropped a pretty decent update here at the end of 2011.

Available now for your Nintendo 3DS are two excellent platformers: VVVVVV and Bionic Commando. The first game, released in 2010, is an incredibly challenging and fun platformer steeped in classic tradition, and the 3DS release marks the first time you can play it anywhere beyond your PC. The second game is actually a port of the original Game Boy version of Bionic Commando, in which you take the role of a super-soldier with a mechanical arm.

Bionic Commando will run you $3.99, while VVVVVV is priced at $7.99. Both are worth a look if you have a 3DS and are looking for an old-school game to play, but it’s worth noting that VVVVVV is only $1.24 on Steam – pick it up for PC if you aren’t worried about keeping it in your pocket.

What really went wrong with Bionic Commando

You may have been happy with how Bionic Commando came out, but for former Cacom boss and Mega Man creator, Keiji Inafune, there were some pecularities in the game which he would have preferred to be out.

For one, and this is going to be quite a spoiler, if I may warn you, the lead character was sporting a art of his bionic arm made of his dead wife. Creepy, right?

Apparently, Inafune found it creepy, too. "I don't even know what happened there." As it turned out, there was a dire lack of communication between publisher Capcom and developer GRIN, that for the most art the relationship was strained, leading to a mutual attitude of unconcern.

"At the beginning, things are very, very good between the two companies. Things get kind of weird from the middle, and it gets really bad at the end -- especially for the Japanese companies."

Of Capcom's relations wiht the developers, he siad, "They should be more flexible about things. If you don't do that, everything will become messed up from the middle. And that's the most important part. Not the beginning, but in the middle and finishing the game."

Bionic Commando: Rearmed released earlier this year on the Xbox 360.
