Nintendo may finally be stepping in on one of the most hotly contested issues in the history of gaming.
The Legend of Zelda series began 25 years ago. Since then, we’ve seen a dozen innovative and engaging titles on systems from the Game Boy to the Wii. However, one thing that’s always remained elusive is the way in which these games fit together. Fan-made timelines exist all over the web, but Nintendo’s only response so far has been to refute those theories and argue that there wasn’t an “official” timeline at all.
Of course, things can always change. Hot on the heels of Shigeru Miyamoto mentioning some sort of “master document” at Nintendo HQ, the official Zelda timeline may in fact be a reality. Hyrule Historia, a celebratory book created in honor of the series’ 25th anniversary and officially designed/written by Nintendo, apparently contains the closest thing to an official timeline any of us has ever seen.
Naturally, there are no actual scans of the pages revealing the timeline, only reports from fans that have already obtained the book. According to them, Zelda splits into three timelines instead of the traditionally accepted two. Here’s a breakdown:
First Branch
Skyward Sword
The Minish Cap
Four Swords
Ocarina of Time
Second Branch (When Link becomes a child again)
Majora’s Mask
Twilight Princess
Four Swords Adventure
Wind Waker (new Link)
Phantom Hourglass
Spirit Tracks
Third Branch (assumes Link was defeated in Ocarina of Time?!)
A Link to the Past
Oracle of Ages/Seasons
Link’s Awakening
The Legend of Zelda
The Adventure of Link
Personally, I’ve always subscribed to the “Legends” theory – each Zelda game is a legend and is meant to be taken completely on its own. But, that’s just me. We’ll keep you posted as details emerge - it’s entirely possible this is the long-awaited Zelda timeline.
What do you think about the three-timeline theory? Too weird? Too complex?

As far as aesthetics are concerned, there is no doubt that there is a clear delineation between Japanese-made and Western-made titles. This difference, while blatant, should nonetheless be celebrated instead of viewed as problematic.
Tecmo Koei's localization producer Peter Garza, was one of the folks who recently expressed his observations about this dichotomy. "I definitely see a split between standard Japanese game developers and Western developers," he said. "It's going to be hard for them to completely merge. Seeing and hearing both sides sometimes I wonder about how this gap is going to get closed."
He furthered, "Games in Japan exist in a different space for entertainment than in the West. Games in the West are very much going for that cinematic experience. Games in Japan are pretty much equated with toys. They're playthings."
This difference in perspectives, however, can only be good for the consumers. As they say, the more options there are, the better. Because with this fundamental difference in approach, invariably, the way the game creators develop their games are also affected. How they mold their vision into a final, playable product are also dictated by how they perceive their game to be accepted by the gaming public.
The Japanese make it as entertaining as possible within the context of a videogame framework because they view the games specifically for that particular medium. Western developers, however, view it as something but a mere portion of what potentially could be a bigger franchise. Most common today would be for them to later on come out with a movie adaptation of the game. Again, nothing wrong with that, as it only expands the experience further.
As far as I'm concerned, having this dichotomy is no problem at all. While some would want to prefer East and West to meet, I think this is one aspect where I would want to keep them separate, if only for the sake of having variety.
