Also free – the immense headache of dealing with EA’s terrible customer service.
Mass Effect 3 marketing has officially hit a fever pitch, with a beta in full swing, pre-order bonuses galore and trailer after trailer making its way to the web. But EA has at least one more surprise up its sleeve, this one aimed squarely at PC gamers.
If you pre-order Mass Effect 3 any time before March 6 (the game’s release date), you’ll automatically receive a free copy of Battlefield 3. The catch? You have to pre-order Mass Effect through EA’s Origin download service.
Let’s weigh the pros and cons: Battlefield 3 is a great game, and picking it up for free would be a nice bonus for any fan of first-person shooters. And, hey, you’re going to buy Mass Effect 3 anyway. However, Origin is a hornet’s nest of problems, with notably terrible customer service. If you think this pre-order bonus is going to run smoothly, you’re out of your mind.
So, you’re risking the potential nightmare of Origin’s customer service hell for the sake of landing a free game. If you’re going to play Mass Effect 3 on PC, it’s probably the best way to go, even with Origin’s obvious faults.
What do you think? Is the promise of a free game enough to send you to Origin?

Call of Duty locking DLC to ELite accounts
More Elite features include flipping the bird to consumers and making tonnes off money by being crazy
So Modern Warfare 3 made over a billion dollars last year and whilst Activision is tight lipped on how much has been made from their Elite service so far. The first two maps for MW3 have been released and the next few already teased but many CoD players have discovered a recent change in the DLC policy. This would have people shelling out more money for their maps but other profiles on the system will be unable to get their content without a second or separate Elite membership.
On the Call of Duty forums, there were 8 pages worth on a single thread of upset players who had their friends and family accounts discontinued or altered with no new maps because they didn't have a secondary account. What's even worse is that the new policy doesn't really work with the terms of services you encounter when you first download the content, which rather plainly states on the loading screen that: "You can use this item on the first Xbox 360 console you downloaded it to. Access to this item will also be granted to all users on this first console."
What would usually happen is that DLC on the 360 would be user agnostic and while your purchase (or any redownloads of purchased items) would be tied to your account, any XBLA games or in-game DLC would be on your HD and playable by any account on the 360, which you own. Microsoft's own digital ownership scheme, mimics real life ownership, so as long as someone has access to the content, you can let someone borrow it from you and play it on their own account.
However, with the CoD Elite service, you cannot do so and require your own user account to access the maps and DLC. For example, a single copy of the game could set you back several $50 a year per account to play on.
Whilst Activision is yet to make a comment on it, I'm sure the more "financially savvy" (See: Greedy) companies will probably adopt this system to make sure each user or member of a console will fork out a piece of dough to make sure they make up for the "lost millions" from pirates.
Not sure how many Call of Duty fans there are on this site, but I'm sure that more often than not there are criticism's spread far and wide about their handling of their Elite service as well as their user base. I do like Call of Duty in theory and in some aspects.
I think if the Black Ops zombie game was just a downloadable title I would buy that and every bit of DLC in existance, but alas we are burdened by terrible storylines, unrelatable characters and some insane visuals. They're not terrible games but their effect on the industry (see: BF3, Medal of Honor, etc.) can bar none see them as a culprit.

A group of BF3 cheaters has a bone to pick with Punkbuster, and they’re doing it at the expense of regular joes.
The beating heart of Battlefield 3 is its intense online multiplayer. And whenever you have online multiplayer in a game, you have to find a way to protect it from cheaters. On PC versions of the game, this function is performed by software known as Punkbuster.
Punkbuster is an automated program that analyzes every player on a particular server and looks for known cheats and other exploits. If it catches someone in the act, they are immediately banned from EA’s Battlelog service. According to Kotaku, some of these cheaters are unhappy with the way Punkbuster affects their game, and have elected to take their frustrations out on the regular BF3 populace.
It seems that somehow, these players have managed to compromise Punkbuster on certain servers, and are using the service to ban innocent players. The group claims to have dumped over 150 players to date, and the official BF3 forums are awash in complaints of unwarranted bans. Essentially, this small selection of players has chosen to protest Punkbuster by using it against non-cheating individuals.
Posting to a bots and exploits forum, one user had this to say about Punkbuster:
“We are bringing back the unerring of punkbuster back for a 3rd season. We have selected ggc-stream as the target since they have the most streaming bf3 servers and makes it very easy to add fake bans. In 2011 we hit them with a mass ban wave and now were are banning real players from battlelog while ggc-stream is totally unaware. We have framed 150+ bf3 players alone.”
This story is still developing, and there’s been no official word from either DICE or Punkbuster on what may be going on, so the news should be taken with a grain of salt. Look for future updates as information is made available.
What do you think of Punkbuster?

The manufacturer of the helicopters showcased in Battlefield 3 never gave permission for them to be used in the game, and EA feels they shouldn’t have to ask.
If you’ve played Battlefield 3, chances are probably good that you’ve either A. been mowed down by a helicopter or B. tried to fly one and ended up hitting a building instead (me). As it turns out, those helicopters you’re so intent on crashing are based on very real vehicles - the UH-1Y, V-22 Osprey and AH-1Z Viper.
Also, it turns out that the manufacturer of those helicopters, Textron, didn’t exactly give EA permission to use their vehicles in the game. The two companies have been back and forth trying to work out a solution, but it looks like talks have broken down. EA has filed a lawsuit against Textron, in an effort to use the first amendment to protect their in-game design.
Essentially, EA feels that the presence of the disputed vehicles in Battlefield 3 is protected by the first amendment, since they’re not featured more prominently than other vehicles and they come without any sort of endorsement. Naturally, Textron feels they should be compensated for their intellectual property showing up in a game that’s making millions of dollars.
Video games are protected by the first amendment, but it’s going to be interesting to see how far that protection goes. This lawsuit is especially hilarious considering EA is known for its over-zealous approach to copyright protection, yanking YouTube videos and filing cease and desists what seems like every other day.
What do you think? Should EA compensate the helicopter manufacturer for using their designs?
[Kotaku]

An Easter Egg discovered on Back to Karkand’s Wake Island hints at a sequel to DICE’s futuristic shooter.
Battlefield 3’s Wake Island is buried in Easter Eggs. First, users find dinosaurs hidden all over the place (likely a tongue-in-cheek reference to fans wishing for a BF3/Jurassic Park mash-up), and now one intrepid gamer has discovered another, more telling Easter Egg, in the form of “2143” painted on a tank.
Check it out:
Now, this could be mere set dressing, or it could be in place to stir up the rumor mill, but either way it brings questions to light – primarily, is DICE working on a sequel to Battlefield 2142? After all, almost nothing you find in a video game environment is there by accident, so the developers definitely went out of their way to print the numbers where they are. Then again, it could just be an elaborate troll on the part of developers known for having a little fun with their user base.
There’s really no way to tell what’s going on, and DICE has been silent on the issue. Basically, this is just one for the rumor mill until we hear otherwise. Or, we could just use our brains. Why wouldn’t DICE make a sequel to one of its most popular games? It’s not like they’re going to drop Battlefield 4 next year, right?
Right?

EA enjoying new Activision customers
Peter Moore enjoying bragging about said customers
Whilst Activision did do business of over a billion dollars in it's first fortnight, EA Games are still sitting quietly on a tiny throne waiting for people to notice them.  Electronic Arts was hoping that they would do a bit of business, not on the same scale, but still big enough to steal some of it's customers. BF3 did better than last year's FPS affair o f Medal of Honor (remember that fiasco?), selling ten million copies since October, of course, in comparison, that's 6.5 million IN A DAY for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3. Moore still believes BF3 grabbed a piece of the Modern Warfare audience...
Moore said that "when the dust fully settles, maybe we're looking at this at the end of our fiscal year, we'll do analysis and I think we will have taken share." Moore doubts that any analysis will turn up poor sales and that everything Battlefield 3 will sell, will be incrimental. But Moore still thinks that whoever sold the most, it's still a win for the entire games industry.
"Two entities have benefited from Call of Duty and Battlefield being on the market," Moore says, "the gamers and the industry, retailers and people who rely on the ability to sell big blockbuster games," Moore says the genre has grown enormously and will continue to do so. "If we haven't gained share, that means in the first week, we've added 5 million new FPS gamers," when commenting on the figures sold, whether they were players from MW3.
Moore is humble and honest about the players though saying there is a possibility that "many of them bough both games." Moore also comments on the media saturation over both games saying the "big entertainment blockbusters this year are not movies, they're videogames." I bought BF3 and not a big fan of Modern Warfare 3, which is a lot of reviewers opinion. It's almost on par with the Twilight films in terms of entertaining noteriority. The games sell well, regardless of critical feedback from consumers or fans alike, and more often than not they are released every year to a slightly stupider audience.

DICE confirms that there will be no standalone updater for the popular first-person shooter.
If you wanted some sort of standalone updater or a method for mirroring patches for Battlefield 3, you’re fresh out of luck – EA has confirmed that the only way players will be able to patch their game will be through Origin’s online service.
This naturally doesn’t affect PS3 and Xbox 360 gamers, whose patches are delivered directly to their consoles, but it does severely limit the way PC players can update their game. Slow updaters are nothing new to the industry, but most game companies provide some sort of alternate method for players to ensure everyone has a chance to get the patch in whatever way works best for them.
This is tough news for the fair amount of people reporting issues with Origin’s updater software – if you live in Australia, for example, you’re stuck with the terrible download speeds you’ve been getting. Maybe not a big deal for a small mechanics update, but for patches like the 3.5GB monstrosity pushed live this week you could be sitting out of the game for a couple of days.
EA has no plans to develop a separate mechanism for delivering patches, so if you want to keep Battlefield 3 up to date you’re just going to have to use Origin for the foreseeable future.
Did you have any issues with the recent patch?

Tomorrow’s 2GB Battlefield patch brings bug fixes, balance changes, and a few other goodies.
We knew that a Battlefield 3 patch was on the way, and we knew that it resolved a few glaring issues (like the tactical light – get it!? Glaring?!), but the full extent of the patch wasn’t really clear until the full patch notes went public. After a quick glance through, it’s obvious DICE is serious about keeping their game as balanced and fun as possible.
The bulk of the 2GB patch is content for the upcoming Back to Karkand DLC pack, but the rest is all adjustments to existing game mechanics. Among the fixes? A big nerf to mortars, a buff to jet cannons, spawn point adjustment and a ton of tiny tweaks to weapons. Here’s the full list of changes, courtesy of Battlelog:
Bugfixes
• Fixed a problem with spawn timer now showing blue border on startup and lost spawn point
• Fixed a problem where player who joined queuing on End of round got spawn screen stuck on screen, but unable to do anything with it until next round loaded
• Fixed a problem where camera would change to 3rd person on killcam when killcam was turned off in server settings
• Fixed stat references on several dogtags
• Fixed for surveillance ribbon not counting TUGS
• Fixed a missing combat area lines on the minimap for Grand Bazaar conquest small
• Moved a tank spawn in US base on Caspian Border so it would not be destroyed by a falling tree
• Fixed a problem where placing C4 with the russians soldier was playing US faction VO
• Fixed a problem where TV guided missiles could be shot into its own helicopter and destroy it
• Fixed a problem when attempting to fire lock on weapons without a target
• Tweaked the chat, it should now be a bit easier to read
• Fixed several vehicles that did not properly shoot rockets and guns towards their predictive sights
• Fixed the G17 Supressed Laser not working properly
• Added alternate HUD colors to help colorblinds
• Added a network interpolation setting. This allows users with good bandwidth reduce latency, but might increase some stuttering. The user can find what works best for his connection by tweaking the slider.
• Increased the Spawn protection radius on TDM
• Fixed a problem with smoke on land vehicles, Missiles should now miss more often
• Fixed a problem where users could end up with IRNV scope in any vehicle
• Fixed a problem where player dies if vaulting over a ledge and into water while sprinting
• Fixed several crashes and increased general stability
• Fixed a problem where the user was unable to revive two players that have the bodies one over the other
• Fixed so you can assign an axis and use as a digital input. This makes it possible for the player (on pc) to assign one of the sticks on a gameped to be used for throttle/brake.
• Fixed a problem with the Kill camera acting up when suiciding from parachute
• Fixed air radar was showing to much. now lasertagged, heatsignature above threshold, enemy missiles and capture points are only visible on air radar
• Fixed a problem where the game would enter a technical hang if the user pressed pause menu and tilde at the same time
• Fixed a problem where you could get green flashes on screen
• You can now reassign cycle weapons
• Fixed so the weapon zooms automatically after bipod deploy is gone when using zoom toggle
• Fixed a problem where the parachute would stay stuck in air if the owner was killed
Balance Tweaks
• Fixed several weapons so they are properly suppressed and hide the player on the minimap when fired.
• Tweaked Tactical Light so it is not as blinding over longer ranges.
• Tweaked the IRNV scope so it is limited to usage only at close range.
• Reduced heat masking effectiveness of Spec Ops Camo.
• Fixed a bug where Ammo spec would give additional 40mm grenades instead of Frag spec.
• Increased the number of additional 40mm grenades from Frag spec.
• Fixed so AT mines only live for 20 seconds after a player dies to prevent infinite mines.
• Increased the Time to Live on sniper caliber rounds to allow extreme distance shots.
• Fixed several weapon descriptions, calibers, and fire rates. The weapons themselves have not changed.
• Fixed so the M9 and MP443 pistol can be equipped by the opposing faction when it is unlocked at 100 kills.
• Fixed Laser Guided Missiles missing their targets if the target is moving too fast.
• Reduced the effectiveness of Stealth on Air Vehicles.
• Reduced the effectiveness of Beam Scanning for Jets.
• Reduced the damage done to Armored Vehicles and Infantry from AA guns.
• Increased the damage RPGs and Tank shells do to AA vehicles.
• Slightly decreased the accuracy for all weapons on fully automatic, burst fire is now preferable at mid to long range.
• Increased the effective accuracy of long bursts for LMGs when using a bipod.
• Slightly increased the range of the 44magnum bullets.
• Increased the close range damage of 4.6x30mm and 5.7x28mm bullets.
• Increased the reload time of the Mortar from 3.5sec to 4.8sec and increased the time it takes before a shell hits the ground.
• Reduced the aimed accuracy bonus given by a Suppressor for the MP7, P90, PP2000, PP-19, and UMP45.
• Increased the range and FOV for designating targets with the SOFLAM and vehicle Laser Designators.
• Decreased the effectiveness of 12g FRAG ammo when equipped on semi-automatic and automatic shotguns.
• Slightly Increased the power of Fighter Jet Cannons against all vehicle targets, especially Helicopters.
• Decreased the power of Miniguns against Jets and Helicopters.
• Increased the power of Stingers against Jets.
• Flares reload times for Jets and Helicopter Gunners have been increased.
• Tweaked the AN94 so its burst fire better conveys the real world advantage offered by this weapon.
• Added Single Shot to the AN94 as an available fire mode.
• Slightly increased the recoil on the M416 and removed the Burst Fire mode (this weapon incorrectly had burst fire, which was not authentic).
• Tweaked the spawns for TDM on Kharg Island, Grand Bazaar, Caspian Border, Seine Crossing, Operation Firestorm, Damavand Peak and Noshahar Canals
• Moved a tank spawn in US base on Caspian Border so it would not be destroyed by a falling tree
• Tweaked the Gas station Capture area on Conquest on Caspian Border
• Tweaked the max vehicle height on Noshahar Canals
So there’s that. See anything you like?

Iran bans Battlefield 3
If they made a game about killing Australian's, I'm sure my country would probably do the same.
The game Battlefield 3 deals with an unnamed war (but we can guess which one) in a series of Middle Eastern settings (as well as European) and has a series of missions, in which terrorists from middle eastern countries are considered the enemy...so the game being banned in Iran is probably not too obvious...but the real reason actually is.
It's not necessarily about context or international relations but media effects that push forward the recent banning in Iran...oh and that whole section (Spoilers) wher US forces blow up the capital city of Tehran. "All computer stores are prohibited from selling this illegal game," a deputy with the security and intelligence division of the Iranian police.
I don't know much about video games being sold in the Middle East, but I can guess that EA has serious distributors in the countries to combat some forms of piracy. It seems that even though they have distributors, the game was pirated and sold in many shops before the release date, but official stores saw the ban coming and have steered clear of stocking the game legally. Unfortunately, some unlucky retailers have reportedly been raided, shop keepers even arrested for selling the game even before the ban was announced last month.
According to Fars, Iran's own news agency, a group of Iranian youths launched a protest against the game and it's sale via internet petition, which has over 5000 signatures. The petition reads about the protesters undertanding the game is a work of fiction but they "believe the game is purposely released at a time when the U.S. is pushing the international community into fearing Iran," it says, which I could not agree more.
Whilst other forms of media have not really divulged in the war on terror and the masculine fantasies of war, video games have never seemed to buck the trend. Since the war on terror began all the way back in 2003, at least ten titles each year about American or British forces taking on Middle Eastern countries have been released, going all the way back to the Banned- in-Australia, America's Most Wanted, which depicted a player hunting down Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden...these times are not a-changin'

DICE is looking to clear up a few bugs and make the interface more bearable with the game’s first major update.
I put a couple of hours into Battlefield 3 every week, or at least I did before Skyrim came out. I wouldn’t say that BF3 is a bug-filled mess, but it certainly has its fair share of graphical glitches and interface tomfoolery. DICE is more than aware of many of the issues plaguing gamers and is hard at work on a patch, which will be pushed live sometime today.
There are a ton of things being updated, adjusted or resolved with this new patch, including:
Load time improvements
Multiplayer/Co-Op crash problems
High-speed mouse updates
Grenades being thrown now drop if killed
Sound updates for weapons, swimming, and other stuff
Tons of weapon balance adjustments
Changes to the way you join squads
The patch notes are very detailed and you can check them out in full at Battlelog. According to the information provided, the client-side changes are only going live for PC owners, and the rest of the server-side changes go live for all consoles. Like I said, look for the patch today.
Have you had any run-ins with major glitches or bugs in BF3?

Surprise! PETA is upset about something. Something incredibly stupid.
I support PETA as a concept – who wouldn’t get behind an organization that works to make sure animals aren’t abused? But sometimes they take themselves a little too seriously. Last week we talked about their hilarious response to a scene in Battlefield 3 that involves killing a rat (don’t tell them about all the critters in WoW), but this week’s scandal comes from a much more innocent item: the Super Mario 3D Land Tanooki suit.
If you played Mario 3, you probably remember the Tanooki suit. It’s the one that turned you into a fuzzy, raccoon-like creature with the ability to turn into stone. It was, by far, the best item in the game, as it protected you in emergencies and allowed you to fly. The suit has made a comeback in Super Mario 3D Land, but PETA is apparently not onboard.
PETA’s site is absolutely hilarious, showcasing a bloody Mario wielding the severed head of a raccoon. Here’s the problem with this misplaced ire – has anyone ever seen a raccoon in a Mario game? Or any evidence that Mario slays animals? Where exactly is the Tanooki, anyway? I always assumed everything in the Mario world was made of magic, but I guess there’s a brutal black market I’m unaware of.
PETA claims that the Tanooki suit sends the message that it’s okay to wear fur, but I’m having a hard time buying that line. They’ve even made a game where you play as the skinless Tanooki, trying to recover your fur. I’m not sure how that’s any better, given that players have to kill dozens of Tanookis in order to pass a level.
I guess the main point is that PETA will do anything for a little publicity, and this approach certainly seems to be working. We’re talking about it, after all.
What do you think of the Tanooki suit fiasco?

Bethesda’s RPG epic knocks Call of Duty from its perch on one of the most popular services in PC gaming.
Sure, Modern Warfare 3 made a zillion dollars last week. Sure, it’s the biggest launch in history. But last night, gamers seemed to forget about Call of Duty for a few hours to focus on the new kid in town: Skyrim. Valve’s Steam tracker shows that Skyrim landed 231,583 users during the first 24 hours following its launch, while Modern Warfare 3 held the second place slot with 78,161.
Of course, these are only Steam numbers – sales tallies aren’t in and for the moment, there’s no real way to tell if this trend was reflected on consoles. But it’s still an impressive feat, and knocking the biggest game in history off the throne for even a few hours is an achievement Bethesda should celebrate. Skyrim is a hotly anticipated title so it’s no surprise to see it doing well; we’ll just have to wait and see how the numbers even out over the coming weeks.
Modern Warfare 3 will likely regain the top slot as the initial push of Skyrim players dissipates and things level out, especially once Skyward Sword hits shelves later this month. RPG fans can’t play both games at the same time, but shooter fans are pretty much done with choosing until next year’s inevitable Call of Duty sequel.
Which game are you spending your time with this weekend? Contrary to what the commenters on this post seem to believe, I’ll be playing Battlefield 3.

Five posts from the last few days that you may have missed, but shouldn’t have.
Saturdays can be slow news days, and it’s hard to keep up with everything that happens during the week. So, with that in mind, I’ve compiled a quick list of the most Jumped/Commented posts of the week, as well as a quick rundown on what you’ll find should you choose to read them yourself. Also, I’m giving one special QJ user the illustrious “Comment of the Week” award, so be sure to check that out at the end of this post.
Here goes:
Did You Kill a Rat in BF3 Single Player?
PETA is pretty upset about a scene in Battlefield 3 that has you pick up a rat, stab it with your tactical knife and toss it aside. Comments overfloweth on this post, but it looks like most people seem to agree that PETA needs to calm down. Read the full post and add your thoughts to the discussion – is in-game violence cause for real-life concern?
PoV: Is it Time for PlayStation 4?
In this post, I talked about the speed at which PC systems are outstripping consoles, and whether it’s time for an official announcement on the next Sony console. Sony probably isn’t dropping the system any time soon; analysts say it’s strong until 2015. Most commenters seem to feel that the PS3 has plenty of life in it – what do you think?
Colorado Man Loses His Mind Over MW3 Pre-Order
This post covers the very strange occurrence at a Colorado Best Buy on Tuesday night, when a man threatened to shoot employees and blow up the store because they ran out of copies of Modern Warfare 3. Commenters think the guy should have chilled out, but some have noted that Best Buy should have stocked enough games to cover their pre-orders. There’s also a fair bit of CoD bashing, if that’s the sort of thing you enjoy.
You Can Play Skyrim Forever
Bethesda recently revealed that Skyrim’s radiant story system will continue to create quests for as long as you own the game. This essentially gives you an infinite Skyrim experience. Comment reactions are pretty positive, though one commenter somehow manages to insult Modern Warfare 3 in the process. What do you think about a truly infinite experience?
Android and iOS Stomp Nintendo and Sony Handhelds
News that the mobile games market finally eclipsed traditional handheld games sales took the industry by storm. Games for these two mobile platforms have generated more revenue than PSP and DS games combined, but some savvy commenters noted that the DS and PSP are near the end of their lifespans, and the data may not be as impressive as some may think. Check out the post and decide for yourself!
And, finally, it’s time to present one special person with “Comment of the Week.” I’ve read through piles of comments – some good, some bad, and some absolutely awful – but the clear winner this week is doo che, for his/her comment on “You Can Play Skyrim Forever:”
“I HAVE NOT BEEN THIS EXCITED FOR ANYTHING IN MY ENTIRE LIFE.
YOU COULD GIVE ME 18 HOOKERS AND AN INFINITE SUPPLY OF BACON AND I STILL WOULDN'T GIVE A SHIT, CAUSE SKYRIM COMES OUT TOMORROW!”
I hope the game turned out as good as you were expecting, doo che. Keep on trucking.

Hey, remember that game Battlefield 3 that still totally exists? It’s getting a few changes in an upcoming patch.
The tactical light in Battlefield 3 is by far one of the worst ideas in the history of first-person shooters. At least, it is in its current incarnation, which blinds every player within a ten-mile distance regardless of whether they’re indoors or standing in broad daylight.
Still, the tactical light could be something special with just a little bit of love, and DICE seem to be well aware of the problem. Developer Alan Kertz posted these images on his Twitter feed, noting the before and after-patch intensity of the light’s now-familiar glow:
Those of you that are fans of the flashlight shouldn’t throw a hissy fit quite yet, because it’s still retaining its sun-like intensity. It will just be effective at a much shorter range than previously, which makes perfect sense when you think about how a flashlight works in real life. Frankly, I’m surprised they didn’t dumb this thing down after the beta.
DICE is also working on balance adjustments for anti-air guns, noting the impact they have on airborne vehicles may be a bit too touchy at the moment. They’re also reportedly working on making jets a bit more useful to the ground game and improving players’ ability to stay alive while flying, but we’ll have to wait and see how that plays out.
Are you happy to see the tactical light being toned down, or are you too busy playing Skyrim and Modern Warfare 3 to care?
