Sony Sees Hope for Vita in 3DS Sales

The games giant interprets strong demand for Nintendo’s handheld as evidence the portable market is still going strong.

It seems like every week we have a report on how poorly the PS Vita is doing in Japan. The story is consistent enough that I’ve considered not even reporting on it for the time being, since we’re basically making the same post once a week when the sales numbers roll in. But despite the device’s sales troubles, Sony believes there’s still strong demand for portable gaming devices.

Speaking to Edge, SCEI President Andy House noted that while the PS Vita doesn’t have its own strong numbers yet, the company feels comfortable using the success of the 3DS as evidence of a robust “gaming-primary” device market. It may seem strange to see Sony using Nintendo as a benchmark, but with sales like the Vita’s, the company is essentially grasping at straws.

Of course, this is Sony we’re talking about, so House couldn’t resist taking a shot at the 3DS as a casual device:

“What I think we've done is point to a market that really has started out with potentially casual games on other devices but now wants a deeper, or better, or more premier gaming experience.”

It’s amazing to me that Sony still manages to dismiss Nintendo devices, despite the fact that those devices continually outperform Sony’s products. Regardless, House is right about one thing – there’s still definitely a market for handheld games.

Handheld Nintendo games, anyway. Awww snap!

Infinity Blade II Release Dated

Epic Games’ sequel to the best-looking games on mobile devices has an official release date, and it may be sooner than you think.

Infinity Blade was a revelation for the mobile games industry. Using the Unreal Engine, Epic Games was able to create a lush, engaging experience for iPhone and iPad users across the globe. It was a nice change from the simple, gimmicky games that plague the iTunes Store, and went on to be quite a success.

Now, Infinity Blade II lurks just over the horizon, and promises to be even better than the original.

Epic has just announced that Infinity Blade II will hit digital shelves on December 1, 2011. If you have an iPad, iPad 2, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 3GS or iPod Touch, you’ll be able to download and play the game – though only 4S and iPad 2 users will be able to play it at its full capacity.

The game promises to be more of the same in terms of play style, just much, much prettier. Epic has put tons of work into displaying the potential of mobile devices, so expect Infinity Blade II to create a new graphics benchmark on release. If you liked the original game, which you can still buy for $5.99, you’ll probably enjoy the sequel.

Arkham City Sold 4.6 Million Copies This Week

There’s no official news regarding a third Batman entry from Rocksteady, but with numbers like this, it would be hard to imagine them walking away.

According to Warner Brothers, Batman’s latest adventure (Batman: Arkham City) has racked up an incredible 4.1 million units sold since its release last Tuesday. What’s more impressive is that this number represents only console sales – the PC version won’t be out until November 18th. This puts Arkham City pretty high up on the list of games for the year, eclipsing the 4 million units of Gears of War 3 shipped to date.

Obviously, Gears is an Xbox exclusive, so it’s not necessarily the best benchmark from which to measure Arkham, which is available on both Xbox and PS3. Gears is, however, the biggest release of the year so far, which at least lands it in the general ballpark for assessing how big a game’s success may be. With 4.6 million units already sold for Arkham City, it’s possible the game will rise up to an astronomical 6 million once the PC version ships, putting it on par with the estimated 8 million hauls of Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3.

This is all rampant speculation, as no one really knows what gamers will and won’t do. And don’t look for Arkham City’s star to shine for long; Battlefield 3 is out today and is likely on pace to leave both Gears and Arkham City in the dust.

Honestly, we won’t have a good indicator of who really came out ahead until the end of the year, once all the big releases are out and everyone has had a chance to do their holiday shopping. Personally, I think that the new Kirby game is going to pull a stunning upset and sell 10 million copies.
