ESRB comments on Arkham City

Batman: Arkham City is all ready to roll out, but before that, ESRB must put in a couple of words.

According to the ratings board, Arkham City deserves a T (for Teen) rating because it contains references to alcohol, blood, mild language, suggestive themes, use of tobacco, and of course, violence.

"This is an action-adventure game featuring characters from the Batman franchise. Players assume the role of Batman as he investigates Arkham City, a neighborhood overrun by psychopathic criminals and former prison inmates. As players explore the city and infiltrate hideouts, they punch and kick criminals in melee-style combat, using various gadgets (e.g., explosive gel, smoke pellets, a grappling gun) to defend themselves against gun-wielding thugs and villains. The frenetic combat is highlighted by cries of pain, punching sounds, realistic gunfire, and slow-motion effects.

In some sequences, players must solve puzzles or use stealth to incapacitate enemies and free hostages; when players fail a challenge, the hostage will lose his life. Some environments contain bloodstains on the floor or furniture; other cutscenes depict spots of blood on injured characters. During the course of the game, some female characters are dressed in form-fitting outfits that expose large amounts of cleavage; one background sign depicts the silhouette of a woman and the words “Live Nude.” The dialogue also contains some suggestive references (e.g., “The anger, the frustration, the hints of repressed sexual tension” and “Sure could go for some porn right now.”).

One sequence depicts a character smoking a cigar, and there are various references to alcohol (e.g., “She got a little drunk and killed her classmates,” “I'd give anything for a nice cold beer right now.”). The words “b*tch,” “a*s,” and “bastard” can be heard in dialogue."

Batman: Arkham City comes out for the PC, Xbox 360 and PC on October 18th for North America, and October 21 for Europe. Warner Bros. just revealed the Collector's Edition a couple of weeks back, along with the promise that htey will be delivering the "most detailed open world game".

ESRB comments on Catherine

ESRB has got a mouthful to say about Atlus' upcoming multiplatformer, Catherine. The ratings board released its summary for the game, and as expected, gave it an M rating due to the presence of blood, partial nudity, sexual themes, strong language, use of alcohol and violence.

An excerpt from the ratings summary describes in full detail the gore that you will see in the action/adventure-puzzle game:

During one cutscene, a character is stabbed in the stomach with a knife; a large pool of blood quickly forms under her body. In order to move faster in the puzzles stages, players can order Vincent alcoholic beverages (e.g., mixed cocktails, beer, sake, whiskey); after three drinks, he begins to stumble around when moving. These sequences are accompanied by voice-over narration: “It's said that chugging alcohol isn't good for you, but sometimes it's necessary” and “[T]ake a big swig of cognac!” Throughout the game, sex and sexuality are frequently referenced, sometimes while two characters are in bed together (e.g., “I finally became a man! Got rid of my V-card, BOOM,” “If the one you loved confessed to a sexual habit that you found absolutely unacceptable, what would you do?” and “After all you've done to my body . . . Night after night . . .”).

Definitely sounds interesting, eh? But of course we already know that Catherine will indeed be one juicy tale, thanks to the trailers that Atlus has sent out thus far. They also recently launched the official website of the game, which you can now visit and ogle at until the full game actually comes out.

ESRB describes inFamous 2

Cole McGrath's latest adventures on inFamous 2 garnered a T for Teen rating from the ESRB.

As always, the ESRB's rating summary should provide for another look at what you can expect from the game. Here's wha tthey have to say about inFamous 2:

"This is an action-adventure game in which players assume the role of Cole, a man who must stop a monster from destroying the planet. From a third-person perspective, players roam around 'open-world environments and use element-based projectiles (e.g., lightning bolts, ice spikes, power grenades) to kill mutated monsters, animal-like creatures, and gun-toting soldiers.

Combat is often frenetic and includes explosions, cries of pain, and brief blood splashes to indicate damage. Players have the ability to attack pedestrians wandering through the city and Bio Leech them while they are lying on the ground; this electrical attack sucks the life out of the injured character.

In one comic book-style cutscene, a character uses a rifle butt to strike a civilian, resulting in a blood-splatter effect. As the game progresses, players can explore a red-light district that contains advertisements infused with sexual references/ innuendo (e.g., 'Sex', 'Live Nude Girls,' 'Erotic Peep Show', and 'Latch It and Skank'); some neon signs also depit silhouettes of pole dancers.

During the course of the game, players can create their own missions and assign 'drunk' characteristics (e.g., "Happy', 'Sloppy') to non-playable characters; in one cutscene, two men are depicted drinking beer until they fall asleep. Another cutscene contains a brief drug reference (e.g. 'What happened, old guy slip you a roofie?'). The words 'sh*t' and 'b*tch' can be heard in the dialogue."

Serious Sam goes Indie

Croteam is stepping aside and letting indies have a crack at Serious Sam. With this, you can expect the arrival of three Serious Sam titles all bundled up in one.

The Serious Sam Indie Collecition will contain Serious Sam: Double D (Mommy's Best Games), Serious Sam: Kamikaze Attack! (Be-Rad Entertainment), and Serious Sam: The Random Encounter (Vlmabeer).

Said Croteam CEO Roman Ribaric:

Croteam has always been proud to be an independent studio working on something that we created ourselves and truly loving making each game.

We wanted to put our beloved Serious Sam in the hands of some of today's best indie developers out there and see what they would come up with. I think Serious Sam fans and fans of these brilliant developers will be really happy with the great games they're developing now."

It should be interesting to see what they've got cooking, indeed. In case you can't wait for the release of the Serious Sam Indie Collection, you might want to head over to Boston this weekend for the PAX East 2011 event. Serious Sam: Double D and Serious Sam: Kamikaze Attack will be at booth I-16 at the Mental's Horde Recruitment Center.

Duke Nukem Forever gets ESRB rating

It's been a long time coming, but it looks like our good ole' buble-gum chewin', cigar-smoking, babe-lovin, and ass-kicking action hero is back in his old antics again. According to the US software ratings board ESRB, Duke Nukem Forever will include some highly explicit "sexual acts," mature humor, nudity and use of drugs and alcohol, among others.
