Infinity Ward is issuing perma-bans that aren’t exactly permanent, but might as well be.
Want to get banned from Modern Warfare 3 for the next 13 years? All you need to do is skirt the rules of the game by hacking, power leveling or performing some other stupid task, then get caught. Infinity Ward is issuing permanent bans to players caught breaking the rules, although the bans may not be as permanent as one might think.
While the message players receive indicates that the suspension is only temporary, the timeframe is pretty amazing – 5,000 days. That means, assuming the suspension isn’t extended, your account won’t come back online until 2024. By then, we’ll be up to Modern Warfare 25.
If you receive this message, it means you’re banned, not suspended. Apparently, Infinity Ward doesn’t have a mechanism in place for applying permanent bans, so they’ve gone with the next best thing – suspending your account until the game has long been made irrelevant.
Robert Bowling, creative strategist for the Modern Warfare brand, confirmed that if you see this message, you did something very, very stupid. So play by the rules, and avoid the perma-ban!

If you’ve been busy with holiday preparations or fighting off dragon invasions, here are some things you may have missed.
It’s been a somewhat busy week for the games industry, though most of the news has to do with titles that have already been released rather than things that are about to come out. We’re fast approaching the end of the crazy rush of releases and people seem to be settling down into their gaming habits.
Modern Warfare, Battlefield and Skyrim dominated the news this week, and plenty of commenters stormed our posts to let their voices heard. So without further ado, here’s your:
Infinity Ward Swings the MW3 Banhammer
Modern Warfare 3 has been out since the 8th, and lead creative strategist Robert Bowling has confirmed that Infinity Ward has already banned over 1,600 players for cheating, hacking and glitching. Most people seem pretty happy about Infinity Ward’s commitment to stopping cheating, but some commenters can’t resist another chance to take pot shots at the Call of Duty franchise.
PS3 Battlefield 3 Owners Getting Battlefield 1943
Sony’s Jack Tretton announced that the PS3 version of Battlefield 3 would come packed with Battlefield 1943, but that bonus failed to materialize. Some gamers filed a class action lawsuit against EA (which I still don’t understand), and faced with intense media pressure and the ire of Battlefield fans everywhere, the developer caved. So, free Battlefield 1943 for everyone!
EB Games Canada Dropping Pre-Owned Games
There is a rumor floating around the retail games industry that EB Games, a subsidiary of GameStop, is planning to mix its used and new games together. The familiar yellow “used” tags will be replaced with white “used” tags, so while the games will still be noted as used products, the similar labels may confuse less savvy gamers. We’re still waiting to see how this story plays out.
Skyrim Map Contains all of Tamriel
One gamer’s realization that the entire landmass of Tamriel is built into the map for Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim led us to wonder why exactly the content was included. Some venture it’s intended as a resource for modders, some think it’s just to add realism to the environment, and some think it’s for potential DLC content down the road. What do you think?
Square Enix: We Want a Final Fantasy Every Year
Square Enix was apparently unhappy with the development time of Final Fantasy XIII and is hoping to up their release schedule to something more along the lines of Assassin’s Creed or Call of Duty. There seem to be people on both sides of this particular post, some excited about more frequent Final Fantasy games, others concerned about the quality loss that may occur as the result of such a cramped development schedule.
So there are your most commented posts of the week. And, as is now tradition, it’s time to award one lucky reader the prestigious “Comment of the Week” award. This week’s award goes to Harv_ironlung, for his very thoughtful and poignant response to Keith Vaz: Ban Call of Duty:

Well said, Harv_ironlung. I don’t think I could have said it any better myself.

Despite rumors that the game had been shelved, Running With Scissors finally issues an update regarding the latest in their often-ridiculous Postal series.
The original Postal game was a top-down shooter with no real story. You knew that the main character had been evicted from his house, and was subsequently going berserk, but that was about it. Postal 2 was even more insane, with so much violence it was actually banned in some countries (read: Australia). Now, after a few years of silence on the topic, it looks like Running With Scissors is finally ready to return to the franchise.
The company has just announced that Postal III will launch in the Steam store on December 10th, bringing with it the return of the game’s main character, “Postal Dude.” Postal III takes place in Catharsis, and will presumably revolve around causing as much damage as possible in order to quell the rage that lives inside of you.
The press release on the game’s official site also indicates that it may be heading to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, albeit at a later date. Time is going to have to tell.
Anyone play the first couple of Postal games?

The common practice with DLC is for developers to push additional content for the multiplayer mode. With Battlefiled 3, however, could it ever be possible for us to get DLC for the single-player?
According to the guys at EA DICE, it's not all too impossible. At the recently concluded Tokyo Game Show, AusGamers managed to corner some of the company execs to ask about this particular matter. Said Gustav Enekull, "We're not ruling out any possibilities, but at this point we've only announced the Back o Karkand expansion pack, coming out later this year."
"What I can say," he furthered, "is that we want our DLC -- no matter how it's set -- to be a new experience for the player. And that, in theory, could just be an extension of the co-op for example. But it's important to us that it's not just a new map pack; it's a new themed-setting; it brings you something that's more than maps.
Vehicles, weapons, new ways of playing; expanding the experience and giving players something fresh and new. That's how we're thinking and that's what we've done with the first planned expansion which is back to Karkand."
A single-player DLC for Battlefield 3 should definitely be a breath of fresh air. Multiplayer is always fun, but of course, there are some who would prefer to ride it out alone, lonely ranger style. Still, while EA DICE isn't totally scratching it out from their ideas list, they've yet to fully commit to it, so we'll just have to wait and see how this pans out.
Meanwhile, you've got the Achievements to keep you busy. Just make sure you're on the official servers, else you'll risk getting banned.

So, remember when Microsoft went on a banning spree over at the Xbox Live last week? They were pretty much secretive about the whole "Marketplace Theft" issue.
Apparently, though, it appears that one particular DLC is the root cause of all this drama. As reports would have it, a glitch present in the Rezurrection DLC for Call of Duty: Black Ops is the one causing all the trouble for the gamers. What happens is that the glitch flags their Xbox 360 units as being stolen. The consequence for this is that the XBL account attached to the unit thereby gets banned.
The glitch seems to be pretty random, and so it doesn't really matter whether or not your unit is indeed stolen. Those banned were only so unfortunate as to download the game's add-on, and thereby is burdened with the banning consequence.
To make things more frustrating, Microsoft apparently wants to keep things under wraps until they are able to figure out a way to deal with the issue. This is rather surprising considering how swiftly and transparently they dealt with the previous security issue on their system. I just hope that this media blackout won't be for too long because really, the consumers are obviously on the losing end of this whole brouhaha. Meanwhile, if this be true, Activision should say something about the matter as well.
The CoD: Black Ops Rezurrection Pack came out for both the XBL and PSN back in September 23rd. The bannings commenced shortly after that for XBL subscribers.

Could Microsoft playing to the good graces of the hackers and their consumers the world over? As rumors would have it, the company is currently in the process of unbanning consoles that they have previously banned.
DJ Keemstar claims that Microsoft opted for this move supposedly to appease Anonymous and not have the group go after them like they did with Sony. This claim is further corroborated by several posts on different forums, saying that they do know of consoles that have been unbanned by Microsoft out of the blue.
Of course, these are all very interesting bits of news right now, especially for those who could be potentially affected. DJ Keemstar, proud Xbox 360 bannee for 15 times, has posted this video to back up his claim.
Check it out and see for yourself. We, in the meantime, will still be tagging this as a rumor until we hear anything officially from Microsoft.

mk-thumb-2Mortal Kombat fans in Australia were dealt a lethal blow last week when word came out that the series' latest iteration, Mortal Kombat, was refused classification by the Australian Classification Board. The good news for Australian gamers is that the game's publisher, Warner Bros., isn't taking it lying down. They're rallying for another go at the classification board.
