Ó

THQ hasn’t been doing great over the last few months, and this nasty letter from a former employee doesn’t make things look any better.
THQ, the company behind Saints Row: The Third, had a tough 2011. The company was in such dire straits that rumors floated around about it canceling its entire 2014 lineup, rumors the company vehemently denied. This morning we received word that THQ was shifting its strategies yet again, this time focusing more on its core franchises over third party licensing.
It’s hard to get a bead on exactly what’s happening with THQ. Rumors and sales indicate the company is in serious trouble despite the success of Saints Row, but the company refuses to admit that they have any sort of problem. Only one person seems to be willing to comment on the state of the company – an alleged former employee with an obvious bone to pick.
In a letter written to THQ’s Board of Directors, CEO Brian Farrell as well as the general public and a collection of gaming news sites, this “Formerly Mismanaged” employee rattles off a laundry lists of complaints about the company.
The letter essentially claims that THQ’s problems stem from mismanagement and a Board of Directors that has no clue how to strategically run a gaming company. It gives examples like acquiring game studios with no plan on how to utilize their talents (then later shutting them down), investing money into shrinking niche markets, the company’s refusal to dump a CEO that has tanked its stock price and high-paid executives making enormous mistakes that call their competency into question. The disastrous uDraw tablet also makes an appearance.
These allegations of management incompetency surface just a few days before THQ announces its current financial standing on February 2, and things certainly don’t look good. One analyst has gone on the record by stating that THQ, without some sort of financial windfall, with run out of cash near the middle of this year.
You can read the letter in its (extremely long) entirety below:
[JoyStiq]
"To:
THQ Board of Directors
Lawrence Burstein
James Whims, Gigex, Inc.
Henry DeNero, Arcturus Capital
Brian Dougherty, AirSet, Inc.
Jeffrey Griffiths , Lumber Liquidators
From:
Current and Ex-Employees, Shareholders, and The Public
Dear THQ Board,
I am an ex-employee at THQ. I saw the tweet-started headlines over the past week from an "industry expert." This expert is one who I and my friends and co-workers in the industry have never heard of after a long time in the field. I had been reading the various following articles and accounts and it generated sympathy for friends both recently laid off and currently still there. I thought it would be a good idea to send a note with their input. This note has honest facts and thoughts about THQ and the current problems there. Most of these facts are public knowledge and they have been confirmed by public records or can be confirmed by current and former THQ staff there both before and after my and their time.
I have long felt the need to explain to outsiders how this beaten-down company has wound up in this position. It is to the point where having it on your resume is not a point in your favor. And that shouldn't be the case. I'm/We're sending this note anonymously because some of us are still awaiting final checks and others know how little corporations like employees who air their dirty laundry. We feel the need to say something to combat the partial misinformation being written.
THQ had been known through the years for having a formula. They find a hot license, make a cheap game, barely advertise it, and make money. This formula worked during the Playstation and Xbox and Gameboy days and made the company a lot of cash. Unfortunately, THQ's old guard executives seem to be stuck trying to manage the company the same way they did back then and haven't realized the industry has changed.
The beginning of the end came years ago as Brian Farrell lead an executive team to acquire a large number of studios. A large amount of cash was used in the acquisition or setup of game developers with different degrees of talent. The problem was they were bought without strategic reasoning or specific plan on to use them. So after awhile another large amount of money was spent as those studios failed and were sold off and shut down. The executive team at the time were an entirely different group of people with one key exception in the CEO. The CEO/the then executive team wasted the cash that the company had built up with these massive investments and selloffs.
The studio purchase errors were not helped by the mistakes in the licensing deals that were signed by the same CEO. Millions and millions of dollars were wasted on acquiring licenses at the same time the kids, family, casual business was declining at a rapid rate. Instead of slowing those acquisitions he overpaid for more of them until again cash was wasted in paying for brands that didn't sell well anymore.
The mistakes in decisions and cash losses triggered wave after wave of layoffs. In the most recent wave, about 40 people lost their jobs this past December through no fault of their own. The reason why is the chronic and constant mismanagement of their company. The fact is that the CEO and executive committee were so focused on trying to hit an unrealistic financial goal that they bet everything on an extremely risky proposition in the uDraw tablet. When they lost, they further displayed their lack of management skills by not having a contingency plan. Three weeks after the game launched, an entire business unit was wiped out when it didn't meet its goal due to relying on that one product to hit an unrealistic target.
After the layoffs many ex-employees walked around shell-shocked and trying to figure out who was responsible. They came to the understanding that most of us do after leaving the company. The issue with THQ has never been one of lack of staff creativity, intellect or business intelligence. It all rests of the failure of its management team and you the Board of Directors.
This Board has allowed the Brian Farrell, the CEO, the ongoing ability to take a cash-rich profitable company and drive it from a $30 share price down to around $.70 without acting despite numerous mistakes that even for those lacking business training, could see were errors. Even without glaring mistakes how can the same CEO stay in charge after a 99% share price loss? Aside from the board, who is responsible for the current situation and who is accountable for the current and future job losses at the company? When you ask the recently departed who are a good source of information, you get the same answers. This uDraw failure is the largest and most recent one in a string of them that were hushed over and hidden. The answer aside from the Board is the current executive team that allowed this uDraw implosion to happen.
Brian Farrell, CEO with a 2011 salary of $1,289,558, for a lack of business intelligence or fiscal accountability. A vocal inside group pointed out the mistake of trying to launch a year-old product that received almost no software support in the last 12 months. Instead of listening and having a back-up plan, he went ahead and invested a ridiculous amount of money in the manufacturing and advertising of the product and failed miserably. It is passed time for him to go. We are wondering what is taking so long for you to act. We have been wondering this same question for a long time.
Martin Good, EVP and head of Kids, Family, Casual with a 2011 salary of $1,198,023, for bringing no strategic thought or business sense to the role. He was brought out from Australia sales to replace an outgoing head of the business unit and rapidly displayed a complete lack of leadership skills, vision, and any sort of analytical sense. Looking at his compensation package, he is an excellent negotiator as his salary is higher than anyone's except for the CEO. On the plus side he lost his job with the rest of those laid off. On the minus side, he will be floating down on a golden parachute while the rest of the former employees scramble to look for jobs in this challenging environment. Most of those jobs will be at studios in other parts of the country, so they will be forced to relocate their families in the middle of their childrens school years. It is incredible that he made this level of income while doing such a poor job, but it serves as a reflection of the lack of Brian Farrell's ability to staff well and manage.
Paul Pucino, CFO with a 2011 salary of $674,855, for not planning for this possibility and having a safety net or a plan to cover THQ just in case of failure. We have a line of credit that we likely used to buy the plastic that is not selling to customers. It is like taking a cash advance to buy THQ stock and just as worthless of an investment. Paul is known as an absentee executive who is missing when business situations gets complicated. While he was in the loop at the point of the risk, with the following failure he has been clearly unavailable. It is another example of Brian Farrell's inability to staff.
Ian Curran, EVP and head of global publishing with a 2011 salary of $1,037,047, for not flagging an unrealistic sales goal to the CEO or the Board when a big part of the corporation felt the numbers were unrealistic. He blindly held up an unachievable target and didn't act when multiple people told him he was aiming to high and out of step with the marketplace. If a sales executive's job is to anticipate the market, he has done a poor job of it. Another example of Brian Farrell not being able to find the right people for the right job.
Ed Kauffman, EVP of Legal and Business Affairs who clearly was signing bad deals on licensed products, not factoring in the changes in the business and being more critical with financial terms with partners. uDraw by itself cannot possibly explain the companies poor financial health. It is a combination of that product and a string of bad licensed deals that the company took on against better judgement. While Brain Farrell would logically be the final decisionmaker for deals, Kauffman is either unpersuasive in his arguments to not do them or supported them. Either situation equates to another example of poor staffing choices by the CEO.
uDraw was failure and the only people to blame are the people listed above. THQ and its current financial situation is also their responsibility. And they were paid around $4.5 million dollars for their poor decisions. If there is any doubt we would recommend talking to current and former staff to get the straight story. Don't read this note as bitterness on their part, but more as long overdue truth.
So, Board, it is time. Passed time for you to act and passed time for you to do something about the mismanagement that has gone on for too many years. We've watched the stock from the outside and read the comments and the reason why the company is valued so low despite its sales is because of this underqualified management team.
Board it is time for you to act before your names are added to the list above of things that must change.
Sincerely,
The Formerly Mismanaged"

Despite rumors to the contrary, Sony chief Kaz Hirai insists the PS4 is not on the table for 2012.
CES has been packed to the gills with big announcements, but nothing so major that it shook the foundation of gaming. Instead, all eyes are on this year’s E3 event, where everyone is expecting a new console from Microsoft and possibly one from Sony. While hype has been swirling around a simultaneous reveal from both companies, Sony chief Kaz Hirai has a bit of tough news for Sony fans.
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Hirai indicated that rumors of a Sony reveal at this year’s E3 were “wide of the mark.” He also noted that he feels the PS3 has a ten-year life cycle, and that there’s no reason to back away from that plan.
This information flies in the face of sourced info claiming Sony had new hardware to display this year, but it’s entirely possible they’re just revealing a new version of the PS3. It’s also counter to reports that some Sony-specific studios have already shifted to PS4 game development. Whatever happens, it will be curious to see how Sony sticks to its ten-year plan once the Wii U and Xbox 720/Infinite/Loop/Whatever actually hit shelves.
Do you think the PS3 will have a ten-year cycle, or do you think Sony will rush to market once its competitors establish a foothold?

Tomorrow’s 2GB Battlefield patch brings bug fixes, balance changes, and a few other goodies.
We knew that a Battlefield 3 patch was on the way, and we knew that it resolved a few glaring issues (like the tactical light – get it!? Glaring?!), but the full extent of the patch wasn’t really clear until the full patch notes went public. After a quick glance through, it’s obvious DICE is serious about keeping their game as balanced and fun as possible.
The bulk of the 2GB patch is content for the upcoming Back to Karkand DLC pack, but the rest is all adjustments to existing game mechanics. Among the fixes? A big nerf to mortars, a buff to jet cannons, spawn point adjustment and a ton of tiny tweaks to weapons. Here’s the full list of changes, courtesy of Battlelog:
Bugfixes
• Fixed a problem with spawn timer now showing blue border on startup and lost spawn point
• Fixed a problem where player who joined queuing on End of round got spawn screen stuck on screen, but unable to do anything with it until next round loaded
• Fixed a problem where camera would change to 3rd person on killcam when killcam was turned off in server settings
• Fixed stat references on several dogtags
• Fixed for surveillance ribbon not counting TUGS
• Fixed a missing combat area lines on the minimap for Grand Bazaar conquest small
• Moved a tank spawn in US base on Caspian Border so it would not be destroyed by a falling tree
• Fixed a problem where placing C4 with the russians soldier was playing US faction VO
• Fixed a problem where TV guided missiles could be shot into its own helicopter and destroy it
• Fixed a problem when attempting to fire lock on weapons without a target
• Tweaked the chat, it should now be a bit easier to read
• Fixed several vehicles that did not properly shoot rockets and guns towards their predictive sights
• Fixed the G17 Supressed Laser not working properly
• Added alternate HUD colors to help colorblinds
• Added a network interpolation setting. This allows users with good bandwidth reduce latency, but might increase some stuttering. The user can find what works best for his connection by tweaking the slider.
• Increased the Spawn protection radius on TDM
• Fixed a problem with smoke on land vehicles, Missiles should now miss more often
• Fixed a problem where users could end up with IRNV scope in any vehicle
• Fixed a problem where player dies if vaulting over a ledge and into water while sprinting
• Fixed several crashes and increased general stability
• Fixed a problem where the user was unable to revive two players that have the bodies one over the other
• Fixed so you can assign an axis and use as a digital input. This makes it possible for the player (on pc) to assign one of the sticks on a gameped to be used for throttle/brake.
• Fixed a problem with the Kill camera acting up when suiciding from parachute
• Fixed air radar was showing to much. now lasertagged, heatsignature above threshold, enemy missiles and capture points are only visible on air radar
• Fixed a problem where the game would enter a technical hang if the user pressed pause menu and tilde at the same time
• Fixed a problem where you could get green flashes on screen
• You can now reassign cycle weapons
• Fixed so the weapon zooms automatically after bipod deploy is gone when using zoom toggle
• Fixed a problem where the parachute would stay stuck in air if the owner was killed
Balance Tweaks
• Fixed several weapons so they are properly suppressed and hide the player on the minimap when fired.
• Tweaked Tactical Light so it is not as blinding over longer ranges.
• Tweaked the IRNV scope so it is limited to usage only at close range.
• Reduced heat masking effectiveness of Spec Ops Camo.
• Fixed a bug where Ammo spec would give additional 40mm grenades instead of Frag spec.
• Increased the number of additional 40mm grenades from Frag spec.
• Fixed so AT mines only live for 20 seconds after a player dies to prevent infinite mines.
• Increased the Time to Live on sniper caliber rounds to allow extreme distance shots.
• Fixed several weapon descriptions, calibers, and fire rates. The weapons themselves have not changed.
• Fixed so the M9 and MP443 pistol can be equipped by the opposing faction when it is unlocked at 100 kills.
• Fixed Laser Guided Missiles missing their targets if the target is moving too fast.
• Reduced the effectiveness of Stealth on Air Vehicles.
• Reduced the effectiveness of Beam Scanning for Jets.
• Reduced the damage done to Armored Vehicles and Infantry from AA guns.
• Increased the damage RPGs and Tank shells do to AA vehicles.
• Slightly decreased the accuracy for all weapons on fully automatic, burst fire is now preferable at mid to long range.
• Increased the effective accuracy of long bursts for LMGs when using a bipod.
• Slightly increased the range of the 44magnum bullets.
• Increased the close range damage of 4.6x30mm and 5.7x28mm bullets.
• Increased the reload time of the Mortar from 3.5sec to 4.8sec and increased the time it takes before a shell hits the ground.
• Reduced the aimed accuracy bonus given by a Suppressor for the MP7, P90, PP2000, PP-19, and UMP45.
• Increased the range and FOV for designating targets with the SOFLAM and vehicle Laser Designators.
• Decreased the effectiveness of 12g FRAG ammo when equipped on semi-automatic and automatic shotguns.
• Slightly Increased the power of Fighter Jet Cannons against all vehicle targets, especially Helicopters.
• Decreased the power of Miniguns against Jets and Helicopters.
• Increased the power of Stingers against Jets.
• Flares reload times for Jets and Helicopter Gunners have been increased.
• Tweaked the AN94 so its burst fire better conveys the real world advantage offered by this weapon.
• Added Single Shot to the AN94 as an available fire mode.
• Slightly increased the recoil on the M416 and removed the Burst Fire mode (this weapon incorrectly had burst fire, which was not authentic).
• Tweaked the spawns for TDM on Kharg Island, Grand Bazaar, Caspian Border, Seine Crossing, Operation Firestorm, Damavand Peak and Noshahar Canals
• Moved a tank spawn in US base on Caspian Border so it would not be destroyed by a falling tree
• Tweaked the Gas station Capture area on Conquest on Caspian Border
• Tweaked the max vehicle height on Noshahar Canals
So there’s that. See anything you like?

Commander Shepard’s last hurrah has the bonuses to match in this special edition of the game.
Hey, do you like Mass Effect? If so, you’re probably excited about the next entry in the franchise, Mass Effect 3. And if you needed reason to be a little more excited, why, we have just the thing for you. It’s the Mass Effect 3 N7 Collector’s Edition, and it comes with all the accoutrements you’ve come to expect from slightly larger boxes that contain video games and other stuff.
Check it out:
The pack only runs $79.99, which is pretty fair considering some of the other CE nonsense we’ve seen in recent months (Skyrim, I’m looking at you). For an extra $20, here’s what you can expect to find in your ME3 box, straight from Bioware:
• Premium metal case featuring commemorative artwork of Commander Shepard.
• 70-page hardbound art book featuring hundreds of unique and gorgeous illustrations from the BioWare development team.
• Limited edition Mass Effect comic by Dark Horse Comics, complete with unique cover artwork.
• Join the ranks of the N7 with the premium fabric N7 patch.
• Exclusive 4x6 lithographic print featuring a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork.
• A full collection of in-game content that can’t be found anywhere else!
• N7 Arsenal Pack – Bring the firepower with the N7 Sniper Rifle, Shotgun, SMG, and Pistol.
• Robotic Dog – A faithful sidekick to keep you company on board the Normandy.
• Squadmate Alternate Outfit Pack – New appearances for your favorite squad members.
• N7 Hoodie – For Commander Shepard’s casual days on board the Normandy.
• Relive all the greatest moments of Mass Effect 3 with the digital soundtrack.
• Xbox LIVE Normandy prop for your Avatar. (Available on Xbox 360 version only.)
• Display your initiation in the N7 ranks with a collection of forum and social badges, avatars, and perks
Bioware says the CE is “limited supply,” but we’ve all seen how that usually plays out. Still, if you want to pick up the game and the extras are your type of thing, you may as well reserve it.
I am!

The numbers aren’t all in for Modern Warfare 3 sales, but after tallying the numbers in the U.S. and U.K., one thing is for sure – it beat the hell out of every game preceding it. MW3, in the first 24 hours of launch an in just two of its release territories, sold an astounding 6.5 million copies.
If you’re keeping score, that’s roughly $400 million in revenue for Activision and plenty more than the $360 million generated by Black Ops or the $310 earned by Modern Warfare 2.
Bobby Kotick, the CEO gamers love to hate, noted that the Call of Duty franchise has now generated more money than the entire Star Wars and Lord of the Rings film franchises (separately). Oh, and if you’re worried about getting bored with Modern Warfare 3, don’t worry – there’s another Call of Duty coming your way next year. I feel like Activision is eventually going to burn people out on the franchise, but maybe not any time soon.
In the meantime, Modern Warfare 3 is having a war of its own over at Metacritic. While the game is hovering comfortably at around 8/10 in terms of critic scores, user scores have pegged it much lower. It’s unclear how many of the 0, 1, and 2 reviews are from people that are simply hating on the game just to do it, or from unsatisfied gamers. The one complaint I’m seeing most often? That the game could have been released as a map pack for Modern Warfare 2.
What do you think of MW3? Are you enjoying your time in the game, or is it nothing more than a fresh coat of paint?

The PS3’s streaming music app gets a little much-needed love in the form of a small software update.
If you have a computer (which you must), then you’re probably aware of the existence of sites like Pandora and Last.fm. These streaming music sites allow you to choose a particular taste of music and listen to artists that fall within those parameters. It’s great for hitting the gym, or getting a bit of work done during the day.
Sony has its own version of this streaming music software, called Music Unlimited. It’s sort of under the radar, but a recent PS3 software update is aimed at bringing it up to speed with its much larger competitors.
If you use Music Unlimited, or want to try it out, here’s what you’ll find in the new, updated version:
• My Channels – Allows you to build radio stations around an artist
• Dislike Button – Allows you to flag music you don’t enjoy
• Playlist creation on the fly
Of course, Sony has retained the membership fees, with a basic packaged running $3.99 per month. If you want unlimited playback, you’ll have to upgrade to the premium package for $9.99 per month.
Speaking as someone that’s never run over my free Pandora hours, I can’t imagine paying for streaming music. But, then again, I’m sure there are folks that burn up their music streams much more quickly than I.
So, what do you think of the Music Unlimited updates?

Like country music? You’re in luck next week, because Harmonix is dropping a ton of country hits for Rock Band 3.
Like it or not, country music is massively popular – at least here in the States. People may not think of country as a real genre of music, and it’s certainly the easiest one to make fun of, but that doesn’t change the fact that country artists sell millions of records each year. Harmonix seems to have picked up on the popularity of the genre and is adding a few country songs to the Rock Band Store on November 8th.
Personally, I love country music. Some of it. It would take too long to get into the specific differences between mainstream country and red dirt, Texas country, but it’s a very similar argument to that regarding mainstream rock bands and indie bands. Suffice to say that like all types of music, there’s good stuff and bad stuff.
Anyway, here’s the full lineup, courtesy of Destructoid:
“Going Country Pack 05”
o   Chely Wright – “Single White Female” (RB3 Version)
o   Laura Bell Bundy – “Giddy On Up” (RB3 Version)
o   Reba McEntire – “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia” (RB3 Version)
o   Shania Twain – “Party for Two (with Billy Currington)” (RB3 Version)
o   Sugarland – “Settlin’” (RB3 Version)
“Going Country Pack 06”
o   Billy Currington – “That’s How Country Boys Roll” (RB3 Version)
o   Darryl Worley – “Awful, Beautiful Life” (RB3 Version)
o   Gary Allan – “Man of Me” (RB3 Version)
o   George Strait – “TWANG” (RB3 Version)
o   Johnny Cash – “Ring of Fire” (RB3 Version)
o   Justin Moore – “Backwoods” (RB3 Version)
“Going Country Pack 07”
o   Darius Rucker – “Alright” (RB3 Version)
o   Dierks Bentley – “Sideways” (RB3 Version) O
o   Keith Urban – “Kiss a Girl” (RB3 Version)
o   Lady Antebellum – “Perfect Day” (RB3 Version)
o   Luke Bryan – “Rain Is a Good Thing” (RB3 Version)
o   Merle Haggard – “Mama Tried” (RB3 Version) O
o   Trace Adkins – “Ride” (RB3 Version) X
“Going Country Pack 08”
o   Dwight Yoakam – “Intentional Heartache” (RB3 Version)
o   Jason Aldean – “Crazy Town” (RB3 Version)
o   Rascal Flatts – “Summer Nights” (RB3 Version)
Speaking as a country fan, I can say that most of those songs are garbage. They’ve even managed to get one of George Strait’s bad songs, a nearly impossible feat. I guess it makes sense that they’d opt for the popular over the good, but man is that ever a lame list of songs.
All 20 songs are priced at $19.99 and the individual packs go from $5.49 to $10.49.
Are you going to pick up any of these Rock Band 3 country songs, or do cowboy hats make you want to throw a punch?

The developer answers the number one complaint of gamers and critics alike regarding the Uncharted franchise – lack of choice.
If you take a little time to read through reviews of Naughty Dog’s latest game, Uncharted 3, you’ll see a few of the same themes coming up over and over again. Everyone praises the game’s storyline, script and voice acting, but then complains about the game feeling narrow. Some bolder reviewers that aren’t scared to rile up the internet trolls may even call the game “shallow.”
Amy Hennig, the creative director for Naughty Dog, has gone on the record as considering the linearity one of the strengths of the series. Her logic, put simply, is that without strict linearity, they wouldn’t be able to develop such an engaging and robust storyline.
Here’s her response regarding why branching storylines simply couldn’t make it into the game:
"That's not really our genre. We like those kind of games, as players and fans of other games, but for the action-adventure - especially the pulp-adventure genre - that doesn't really make sense.”
"It's about having a very clear, linear story arc that doesn't allow for a lot of the dilution that is created by player choice in some cases. We always call it 'wide linear' - within the path that we give you, you have a lot of choice within it, it's not just hit this button, and this button, and this button.”
"But we need that authorial control over the story to do what we're doing."
On one hand, I suppose it’s hard to argue with her logic. Sending players down a direct path helps keep you in control of the storyline and gives you more opportunities to focus on the narrative than the choice.
On the other hand, we’ve seen what happens when linearity backfires (Final Fantasy XIII), and we’ve also seen games with incredible narratives that are packed with player choice (pretty much anything BioWare makes).
Do you think Uncharted 3’s linearity helps strengthen the story, or is it the clear mark of a developer trying to make a crushing release schedule?

If you’re looking for the GoW 3 Horde Command Pack today, you’re going to be sorely disappointed.
Gears of War three launched just over a month ago, and today was supposed to mark the first official DLC pack for the game. The Horde Command Pack was scheduled for release on November 1st (and has been for a while), but now seems to have been pushed back due to some sort of technical bug.
The DLC pack, which contains new multiplayer maps, new fortifications and new characters, has been briefly postponed with no real information available on an updated release. Here’s the full statement from Epic Games:
“The scheduled Horde Command Pack release for Gears of War 3 is temporarily delayed due to a technical issue. We apologize to those of you who are anxiously waiting to play. We know this is disappointing news as we’ve seen a lot of posts today showing excitement for this content. We have folks working around the clock to resolve this issue ASAP so you can all play and enjoy the Command Pack.”
All things considered, you’ll probably see the DLC next week. One thing that makes this particular hiccup unique is the existence of the Gears 3 season pass, which provides all DLC for one cheaper price. Since players have already paid for this DLC, the delay is a slightly bigger deal than if it were just rolling out a bit late.
Were you waiting for the Horde Command Pack? I can’t find the time to play the games hitting shelves now, much less download new content for previous releases.

Ó

Now that we’ve all settled in for a Panda-themed expansion, it’s time to look at what’s actually going to change with World of Warcraft’s newest expansion.
The player community has only known about the upcoming WoW expansion, Mists of Pandaria, for about a week. But as with most things Blizzard, the official announcement marked the beginning of an incredible information surge, with previews, images, videos and all sorts of other stuff cropping up across the web. Last night, the Pandaria dev team hosted a live Q&A session packed with information about the expansion, but one recurring theme was the return of world PVP.
Fans of the original World of Warcraft (Vanilla WoW) will remember that world PVP was an integral part of the experience. From raids on Southshore, occupations at Gadgetzan and the enormous pain that was Blackrock Mountain, world PVP managed to crop up quite a bit in the old days. After the addition of a sanctuary city in Burning Crusade and another in Wrath, it became difficult to find a good, steady world fight.
Blizz seems to be aware that world PVP has fallen away and answered a few questions on the topic in the Q&A:
Q: At Blizzcon Tom Chilton mentioned possible incentives for raiding enemy towns to encourage world PVP in mists, can Greg or Cory elaborate on this at all?
A: In regards to extra rewards for world pvp, we are contemplating the idea of increasing players conquest point caps by an extra 10-15%.
Q: Hey there. Will Pandaria have a new Dalaran like city or will we be using the ones already existing ingame?
A: We will have separate player hubs for both the Horde and Alliance on Pandaria. Separate hubs means we do not have to make them sanctuary and will encourage world PVP. These hubs will have access to an AH, Bank and general vendors. Valor, conquest, profession and faction vendors will be scattered around the world to encourage travel.
Q: One of the current issues discouraging World pvp is the presence of highly overpowered guards around cities and hubs, 1-shotting anyone who engages in PvP. How will this be in MoP?
A: We know this is an issue in the current game and we plan to address it in Mists. We want to encourage world PVP, not make it a one-shot game for NPC guards. This is one of the main reasons we decided to make two separate player hubs instead of a shared sanctuary.
Q: I don't like PvP, I play on a PvP server, because my friends on a PvP server and most people from my country is playing on that particular server. I have to face world PvP every time I am doing my business in the new hubs in Pandaria? I love the new zone, but I don't want to be backstabbed by a rogue while I am selling my stuff, or buying equipment. Can non-interested players avoid the world PvP
A: Yes, we certainly don't want you to always be back-stabbed while you are setting up your auctions. However, if a group of the opposing faction wants to form a raid and attack your city, we want them to have a chance to be successful. So yes and no. =)
Q: With the world PvP that is being talked about, are there any plans to add any Quest Hubs in Mists of Pandaria which functions like a smaller scale of Baradin Hold/Wintergrasp that will change faction when it is assaulted? Maybe even ones with actual leveling quests instead of just more dailies to add a dynamic questing experience like the ones that were talked about at Blizzcon?
A: Yes, this is exactly the kind of thing we are thinking about. We will share more info on our ideas for this soon. The idea is that we want to give players more options and not just always have one place to go or one thing to do.
As a former WoW player and fan of flash raids and other world PVP content, I’d hope to see much more of it in future World of Warcraft builds. In the old days, before cross-realm battlegrounds and instant-queue, teleporting dungeons, it was possible to build up a rivalry on your realm. It had less structure and more excitement.
Perhaps these new changes in Mists of Pandaria will rekindle those flames?
If you’re a WoW fan or player, you should read the entire Q&A posted at MMO Champion.

mfworldpvp1Now that we’ve all settled in for a Panda-themed expansion, it’s time to look at what’s actually going to change with World of Warcraft’s upcoming content update.

The company that’s usually pretty careful about its public image is in hot water over an interview played during the Blizzcon closing concert, one that contains homophobic slurs and profanity galore.
If you made it out to Blizzcon and were lucky enough to catch the closing concert, you may remember a brief video clip played during the performance of Level 90 Elite Tauren Chieftan. The video featured Corpsegrinder, the lead singer of Cannibal Corpse, and generally revolved around his passion for World of Warcraft and insane hatred of the Alliance faction.
You can check the video out here, but be warned that it contains graphic language:
The video, which is packed to the gills with curse words and homophobic slurs like “faggot” and “queer,” was somehow vetted by Blizzard officials and shown to the Blizzcon audience. Naturally, the gay gamer community is fairly upset over the remarks, but more so over Blizzard’s insensitivity to the subject matter. It’s worth noting that the content was censored in the video that played for the audience, meaning most of the words had to be inferred.
All gamers deal with profanity now and again, and homophobic remarks often seem to come with the territory, but there’s a big difference between someone calling you a “fag” in general chat and the game company broadcasting those terms out to the world. Knowing Blizzards in-game chat policy for WoW, it’s surprising they would make public any video that violates their own rules, but perhaps it was just an error in judgment.
The forums are blowing up regarding the video, with numerous threads of complaints and a few weak “it was a joke” apologies from Blizzard staff. The most recent update involved locking all previous posts and providing this snippet to forum members:
“Thank you everyone for your feedback regarding the closing night performance at BlizzCon. While we had some other messaging worked up we were going to post, the members of band wanted to instead address it themselves:
Hey guys, we read and heard all the feedback from BlizzCon this year. The Corpsegrinder bit was never intended to be taken seriously. We are sorry that we offended anyone; everything at our shows is just meant in fun. Thank you all for speaking up. We’ll definitely keep this in mind for future shows.
Our humblest apologies,
Level 90 Elite Tauren Chieftain”
The drama is still ongoing, so we’ll see what ends up happening. There’s not much Blizz can do besides apologize, but some players are definitely upset.
What do you think is the appropriate response?

The wait will just be for a teeny bit more. Dark Souls has been confirmed to be delayed for Japan by developer From Software.
Due to "various reasons", the game will not be making its September 15th launch date in the land of the rising sun. It's not going to be too much of a delay, though, as it's been pushed back only by a week. The new release date will then now be on September 22nd.
They did not make mention on anything about the North American launch, however, but hopefully, it will not be affected by this Japanese delay.
Dark Souls comes out for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, published by Namco Bandai. Back in June, the Dark Souls team opened up a contest for the game wherein fans were encouraged to design their own shield and get the opportunity to win Dark Souls goods. There are also a bevy of bonus contents lined up for all awaiting fans.
